One way to perform the gigabyte transfers on your home network is to connect your laptop with an ethernet cable to your router. Voila, a 100 Mbs connection.
That is what I do for large transfers on my Linksys home network with b wireless.
Either that or have a beer and watch the 49ers beat the Steelers on Monday night football while the transfer chugs away on "slow" b wireless. <g>
