Perhaps clearing mechanisms don't degrade until later in life. Combine that with a slow build up of deposits and it shows up in older people.

Falconer,

Sorry for the delay in responding; I am not reading the AVXL board as regularly as previously. I really respect your posts and knowledge so I do want to have a real conversation with you about Dr. Michael Greger.

I read his book, "How not to die" after I had a heart attack in 2016. I have followed his work since then. There is no one like him in the world so far as I can tell. He is extremely smart and has a team of 20 researchers that read virtually every new report on trials in the world. His accumulated information and perspective is almost unmatched by anyone.

He speaks in a slightly wierd accent, which he has improved over the years, but what he has to say is among the best you will ever find anywhere. So, my advice is to give him a try and listen to his ideas. They are always completely documented by research you can look up and read yourself. From what I know about you, I believe you would really benefit from and enjoy his book, "How not to die" and so would everyone else reading this post.

I looked at the video images of the blood vessels he provided to support his claims on this item I posted to I-hub. They are very convinicing that AD is caused, at least in part, by the degeneration of blood vessels that accompanies old age. When you see the comparative images he provides of people with AD versus those without AD, you will understand immediately his argument. A picture is worth a 1000 words. It has long been understood that there is a vascular component to AD.

I have read several sources that I respect which suggest that AD is not caused by just one thing. It results from defferent things in different proportions in different people. Some have a stronger genetic component to their illness; while others cause it by a reckless lifestyle. There are many other influences, which I believe are important in the evaluation of AD, but it has a great deal in common with heart and cardiovascular problems.

The reason that oxidized cholesterol is not hitting 30 year olds as hard as 70 to 80 year olds is simple. The degradation of blood flow is a gradual, life long developement. It is an essential component of "aging" as an illness, and one of its pillers.

Even if it were true that "The diets of 30-year olds are not significantly different from 70-year olds?, as you have hypothesized (which may actually be wrong, but lets assume you are right), does not tell us much. Colestoral begins to show up in the blood vessels of 12 year olds, and builds over a lifetime until it causes a host of problems.

Anything that reduces the brains ability to feed its micahchondria will reduce their ability to provide the brain with the nutrients needed to geneterate the energy that the brain requires for optimum maintance and repair. I suspect that damage leading to AD includes vessel leisions and other problems of blood flow declines and deficiencies, leading to deficiencies in micahchondria activities to generate necessary brain energy. It is a huge subject, but one part of it appears to be how blood flow is blocked by cholesterol deposits and how those blockages cause chronic inflamation.

Accordingly, I suggest that Dr. Greger's information about "oxidzed" cholesterol should be given the upmost of respect and is well worth study and just blindly following his advice, for those that don't have the time or inclination to study this. Trust me on this. Dr. Greger is one of the best sources you will ever find on the internet to learn stuff about diet. He is however biased strongly toward the benefits of the vegan diet, for good reason. So, it many not apply to everyone as some can benefit from low carb diets in special cases.
