That is likely not the number of shareholders. Virtually all shareholders hold their shares in street name (one of the brokerage houses) and the brokerage houses count as 1. So, if Scottrade has 10 clients who own shares of VLDI, it only shows up as one shareholder. That said, there are no doubt few actual shareholders realistically who own VLDI.

I think the lack numbered investors is due to not knowing what's out there. Also, I'm sure there are many who are afraid of penny scams and Ponzi schemes. Fortunately these cases are investigated and prosecuted these days.
