Painting the close to give a false market price is illegal....yet it happens. The VWAP goes a long way to show it when it does occur. It is therefore understandable that the companies benefiting from that manipulation would want to deny the validity of anything that shows the real price, specially the daily VWAP.

And they do it doggedly sometimes.

Imagine having $20K invested and somebody paints up the price 20% (Which happens here a lot). That "add" to their holdings would allow somebody to say 'Whew, that is one more day I don't have to tell my wife I have lost the kid's college fund.'
