Sleep easy, the iPhone's still a quad-band worldphone

Some of the FCC documents confirm a few features of the phone, including that it will have Bluetooth and Wi-Fi and operate in the 1900MHz, 1800MHz, 900MHz, and 850MHz frequency bands.
Eager potential users who hoped for a faster data connection will be disappointed that the approval is only for EDGE. Many operators, including AT&T, have upgraded their networks to deliver download speeds of about 500K bits per second or more, more than twice as fast as EDGE.
The FCC also released correspondence regarding Apple’s requests that the agency keep some documents private. Apple asked the FCC not to release documents that include photos of the phone or the phone’s user manual for 45 days after certification. Apple asked that other documents such as diagrams, a schematic of the radio, the radio bill of materials and operational descriptions remain private indefinitely. The FCC agreed to the requests.
AT&T, which will exclusively sell the phone initially, began last week giving permission to employees who are testing the phones to take the phones outside of their offices for the first time, according to an AT&T employee who asked not to be named. Features on the phones are being activated individually and so far testers can’t play music, watch videos or use the visual voicemail features, the employee said.
Apple requires approval from the FCC to sell devices like the iPhone that operate on the public airwaves.
Updated 5/17, 10:22 pm ET to clarify the frequencies supported by the iPhone and the fact that the phone uses EDGE.
Apple iPhone gets FCC approval

The regulatory green light, a standard certification process that any cellular phone must receive before hitting the U.S. market, means the iPhone's launch can now proceed as planned, Apple spokeswoman Natalie Kerris said.
"We're on track to release it in late June," agreed Mark Siegel, a spokesman for AT&T Inc.'s Cingular, the cellular carrier with an exclusive contract to distribute the highly anticipated product. "Nothing has changed."
The iPhone combines a cell phone with Apple's market-leading iPod media player and sports a touch-screen display. It has been the talk of the industry since Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs unveiled it in January and gave a preview of its features.
Many analysts predict the sleek gizmo will be another hit product for the Cupertino-based iPod and Macintosh maker. Its pending arrival has helped drive Apple's stock to record highs in recent weeks.
The FCC approval comes a day after a false rumor of a product delay briefly frightened investors, plunging Apple shares by more than 4 percent in a matter of minutes. The rumor—reported Wednesday on Engadget.com, a gadget fan Web site—was quickly squashed by Apple, and the stock largely recovered by the end of the day.
On Thursday, Apple shares rose $2.10, or 2 percent, to $109.44 after a Bear Stearns analyst said the iPhone launch was on track and reiterated an "outperform" rating on the stock following a meeting with the company's management.
Engadget's report of the delay of the iPhone as well as of Apple's upcoming operating system upgrade called Leopard cited what appeared to be an e-mail it had received from someone within Apple. But Apple said the e-mail was fake.
"It didn't come from Apple," Kerris said.
The source of the hoax remains unknown, and Kerris would not comment on whether Apple is trying to track it down.
Accurate post Rambos_10, nice job !! The bar for Q2 is low providing a catalyst for the stock in July 07 after Nas compliance in June.
2H07 gonna be awsome w/ iPhone, BB9K, ITM, Blu+FM stereo+Wifi for NOK, 11n ramp, video, DAVE, HSDPA baseband+App Up ramp, HDD favorable seasonality for Window Vista/Santa Rosa...
You are guaranteed to make money if buying below $17.
cbs13, you miss the boat big time re: Xscale. I was the lone voice drumbeating it in the last 5 mos. I felt compelled to throw you a bone. HSDPA baseband + app processor single chip is in BB9K the hottest product on the planet to be shipped in Q4 for this year Xmas. It's left as HW for you to figure out what these acronyms mean. Otherwise, it's too easy for you. The BB9K wil rival the iPhone in volume. There are a lot of design win momentum for Xscale that make you weep and beg me to cough up some more.
A lot of chip suppliers would kill to get BB9K, much like the iPhone.
Chip vendors are under NDA not to talk about the iPhone's content. I hope you understand that. People can only post what is public info.
2H07 gonna be great for MRVL due to seasonal rebound of HDD.
Xscale will contribute significantly to rev 2H07 and way beyond. I envision Xscale, Xscale+3G baseband alone will contribute 30% of total rev in 08. How significant is that ?
It smooths out HDD seasonality. Don't forget about ITM, 11n, GiGE, 10GiGE, video, Wifi+APP PROCESSOR+read channel SoC (DAVE) for Seagate,...
This stock will be in the high 20's in 2H07 easily. We have seen the low this year already. I expect MRVL to be in the high 18's next week during NW&InterOp, Vegas.
Tate Michael Truett's - Acting CFO - option. Why stock may run up after E.R.
Except for RSU ($0 strike price), all his options granted in '05 and after are under water. The most significant batch he can exercise on 9/11/07 is $15K shrs at $19.79. He has a good incentive to boost the stock over this price.
Note that he had no options granted in '07 due to option investigation.
The timing of this Form 3 (5/16/07 on the eve of E.R.) is interesting. MRVL must have anticipated that the stock would do
well immediatly after CC. Therefore, the co. urged Truett to file this form to show that his options were not awarded before the stock run-up at all (timing the grant date that got the co. into trouble in the first place).

APPL has made all vendors sign NDA prohibiting them from disclosing design wins until APPL allows them, or a third party teardown report divulges the vendors.
Any violating vendor will likely be kicked out in the next product cycle. Even some non-vendor violators were sued.
That's why APPL has made an art out of product launch in the veil of secrecy, "By the way, there is just one more thing..."
Other top-tier cell phone cos did the same thing. In the latest BRCM CC, the CEO said that too.

I think you should assume that in 2007 our goal is to win designs. In 2008 you should start to seeing products come out and 2009 has to be all about gaining market share. So, that's how I would suggest you look for milestones. Right now, we have announced some of the products by which we will gain those design wins. You'll see some other products come out later in the year. I can't say too much about them.
But those are the products that we believe will sway the major players to look attractively at Broadcom and hopefully design products based on those. Probably, we won't be able to announce those design wins as they happen, which is I assure you is frustrating for you as it is for us. But that's the nature of that business.
2008 you'll see a lot of those products start to come out and then it is easier. Once the product comes out somebody will tear it down and we can talk about it. And then 2009 again, we are proud of that million unit milestones and that's great. But, some our competitors ship that in a couple of days. So, just to put things in perceptive year.
So, important for us to really get those designs with large players. We do focus on the top-tier players. Those are guys that have the big volume to drive. And if you want to get that kind of market share you have to play with the larger players and that's our strategy.

CrackBerry is hugely popular and addictive in the corporate world and has fat margin. It's like the defacto device for corporate push email. RIMM has had HWs colocate at Central Office to push email. They have incredible mindshare and traction in the corporations and very high entry barrier biz model. You can ask any friends/relatives using the RIMM device provided by their corps. They can corroborate CrackBerry popularity. It's so popular that it has a nick name.
CrackBerry is sure to have Wifi. All engines line up for a rocket launch. MRVL should have drummed beat more on CrackBerry in the CC. Bluetooth for NOK is huge in 2H07 too.

MOBILE VIDEO
The Nokia N800 tablet measures 5.67×2.95×0.51 in. and has a crisp, 800×480-pixel display that spans nearly the entire front of the unit. We all know by now about Apple's iPhone. The latest generation of Pocket PCs also touts VGA LCDs, albeit not wide screen, and both cell phones and portable media players, such as Microsoft's Zune, are also inevitably going the high-resolution route. Yet, especially in large portions of the United States and other areas of the world lacking widespread mass transit, the fundamental usage model is unclear to me. Unlike with a dedicated audio player, you can't use one of these devices while you're multitasking—walking or exercising, for example, and most definitely not while driving. And the small screens, no matter how crisp, seem incompatible with aging populations' dimming eyesight. What's your take on the potential for mobile-video success, and is it to some degree geography-specific? In Asia, for example, mass transit is pervasive, and various cultural factors also encourage isolated multimedia-content consumption.
I agree that the popularity of mobile video is very strongly connected to geography and culture. Almost all of us who work in urban areas have 'lost time' that is spent commuting. Clearly this lost time can't be used to watch video in a region like Silicon Valley where you have one person per car. On the other hand, it is an interesting option for people using mass transit in dense-population areas like Tokyo.
However, I think the real story with mobile video is the portability of your personal video library. As you know, the iPod and other MP3 players opened the door for consumers to carry their entire audio libraries with them so that they could listen to their preferred content anytime and anywhere. The introduction of a variety of audio docks created a rich and complete audio ecosystem, enabling the consumer to listen to favorite music at home through a high-performance AV system, in a bedroom or dorm room through a small speaker system, or anywhere on the road through headphones.
Hard drives continue to increase in density and decrease in cost. One can already buy PMPs [portable media players] that have 80 to 160 Gbytes of storage. If you assume your content is in SD resolution (640×480 pixels) encoded in H.264 at 1.5 Mbps, as is typical of iTunes movie content, you can store 100 hours on an 80-Gbyte video iPod and 200 hours on a 160-Gbyte PMP. In the likely case of a mix of QVGA and VGA content, one could store even more than that. The implication of so much storage in such a convenient form factor at such a low cost is that a consumer could carry his video library with him at all times, just as he does today with his audio library. Why would he do so? Certainly not just to watch video on a tiny screen on the road. He might, however, if there were an easy way of watching the content anywhere, including on a TV in his home, in a hotel room, or at a friend's house. To do this, he needs a new class of dock: an HD-video version of the traditional audio-PMP dock.
This [type of dock] is exactly what we demonstrated at CES with our lead partner, Meridian, a very-high-end audio-video company. Click here for a picture of this dock. At CES in January, we launched the 88DE2710 adaptive digital-video-format converter that can upconvert all types of video and graphics content from QVGA to 1080p. As mentioned earlier, one of the key focus areas for us is to make low-resolution video look good on a large, high-resolution display. At the same show, Meridian demonstrated a prototype of an iPod HD dock that used our 88DE2710 to upconvert iTunes video content from the iPod to 1080p displayed on a Sharp 46-inch 1080p LCD TV. This concept and demo were very favorably received, and we have been working closely with a number of manufacturers that want to bring this device to market this year.
To summarize, I think a device like the HD dock, makes 'mobile video' into a much bigger and all-encompassing category, with mobile consumption or viewing only being a small piece.
WHAT'S NEXT?
Marvell had a diverse product line when it launched its new video-processing IC family at CES. For example, the company offered wireless networking, storage ICs, and the ARM-based CPU line it acquired from Intel and recently expanded. Is it to much of a stretch to assume that Marvell's future plans encompass combining your imaging expertise with other building blocks in the company's portfolio to create new devices for particular markets and applications? What can you share about Marvell's integration vision?
Marvell's diverse technology and product portfolio enables our platform approach for these new product categories, which can encompass a variety of Marvell silicon. A great example is the Seagate DAVE [digital-audio-video-experience] microdrive targeted at the cell-phone market. DAVE has both a Marvell applications processor and Marvell Wi-Fi.
From the video perspective, as a company, we are working on the entire visual pipeline: from image acquisition to preprocessing, compression and decompression, storage, transfer between wired or wireless devices, postprocessing, and display. As you know, various CE devices require some or all pieces of this pipeline. The fully featured cell phone is one example of a CE platform that could use this entire pipeline.

Intel will be introducing Santa Rosa this week
Excerpts from Goldman Sachs.
Intel will be introducing its mobile Santa Rosa (based on the Merom dual-core processor) platform sometime this week. We believe that one of the more interesting features of Santa Rosa will be the optional Turbo memory capability (i.e. Intel's Robson module) or
the option to have a NAND component on the motherboard, which should help enable faster boot up time and faster application access time. Regarding performance, Santa Rosa is expected to offer a 35% to 70% performance improvement versus the previous
generation Dothan mobile processor, a ~23% to 30% performance improvement versus the previous generation Yonah mobile processor, and is expected to have greater than five hours of battery life.

GS: CEO staying a positive, tgt $23
Excerpts by Goldman Sachs, 5/7/07
Internal options investigation completed; CEO staying a positive
What"s changed
Marvell announced completion of an internal review of historical stock option practices, including finding of instances in which grant dates were chosen with the benefit of hindsight as to the stock price and failure of internal controls related to stock option process. The committee recommended Sehat Sutardja remain as CEO and member of the board but step down as chairman. Also, Marvell announced the resignation of CFO George Hervey and a change in responsibilities for Weili Dai to a nonmanagement role
(from COO and director). Marvell will restate financials with preliminary cumulative, pretax, noncash charge estimated at $325-$350 mn; Marvell expects to file delayed
10-Qs/Ks as soon as practicable and is implementing other remedial measures.
Implications
We believe the options review has been an overhang, including uncertainty about the impact to management, in particular related to CEO Sehat Sutardja, who investors view as Marvell's visionary. Hence, we expect completed review and CEO retention will be
viewed as a positive. We believe investors generally expected some management changes and expect Mr. Hervey?s resignation, Ms. Dai?s change in responsibilities, as well as the previous
termination of its general counsel will be viewed as understandable as Marvell works to put the options review behind it. We are updating FY08/FY09 EPS: no change to 1QFY08 (April) but lowering 2QFY08 (July) given continued weakness related to the HDD market.
[INTC OEMs MRVL ITM Robson flash cache controller (Hybrid HDD & Flash cache. HDD drive demand is still healthy to store video content. WDC can corroborate this w/ its good earning 2 wks ago. Valuation

Lehman Brothers
NEW YORK, May 4 (newratings.com) - Analyst Romit J Shah of Lehman Brothers initiates coverage of Marvell Technology Group Ltd (MRVL.NAS) with an "overweight" rating. The target price is set to $20.
In a research note published yesterday, the analyst mentions that the companys new flash controller product is likely to be introduced this week, with the launch of Santa Rosa and Robson Technology at INTC's analyst day. The flash controller, designed by Marvell Technology, would be branded by INTC, the analyst says. The controller is likely to enable Marvell Technology to increase its footprint in the handset, MP3 player, USB drive and digital camera markets going forward, Lehman Brothers adds.
NPD data for NA 1Q 11n units increases > 70%
According to NPD data for North America 11n units purchased in the first quarter increased by over 70% compared with Q4, demonstrating consumers increasing rate of adoption of 11n technology which we believe will continue throughout 2007.

Lehman Brothers reiterate the stock with an "overweight" rating
For a stock with such questionable technicals, there certainly is a lot of optimism surrounding it. Twelve of the 18 analysts following MRVL have it rated a "buy" or better. In fact, just today Lehman Brothers felt the need to reiterate the stock with an "overweight" rating.

CSR sees double-digit sales hike
http://eetimes.com/news/latest/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=199203120
MUNICH, Germany — Bluetooth and wireless chip specialist CSR plc raised sales in its first quarter of the year by 19 percent and significantly increased its R&D budget. In addition, the company booked several wins at major handset manufacturers.
Revenues at the Cambridge, UK, based company were $160 million, while gross margin declined somewhat to 45.1 percent, 1.3 percent points lower than in the same quarter 2006. The company increased its R&D investments by almost 50 percent over Q1 2006 to $33.2 million.
The company achieved product wins in Nokia's N95, 6300 and Samsung's SGH-U600 handsets. Besides these GSM wins, CSR also was selected for four CDMA designs based on Qualcomm chipsets. In addition, the company booked wins in the Bluetooth market segment. Legal changes which impose tougher penalties to drives who at the same time use a mobile phone have led to increased design wins in the Bluetooth segment , the company said.
For the time ahead, CSR expects Bluetooth attach rates in mobile handsets to increase to 40 to 50 percent in the current year from 35 percent in 2006 . For the second quarter, the company now expects revenues of $195 million to $220 million.

Although recent industry rumors stated that Asustek plans to give up developing on the Marvell platform for its 3G handsets, executives at Asustek denied the rumors and stated the company will continue using Marvell solutions in its 3G handset lineup.
The company also stated that several of its own brand and OEM/ODM 3G handsets are now powered by Marvell processors, with the products being quite cost competitive in the market. In the future, the company will adopt Marvell and Ericsson Mobile Platform (EMP) solutions for its 3G handset lineup, Asustek pointed out.
Asustek currently is the only 3G handset maker to use the Marvell mobile platform, the sources noted. Asustek started shipping 3G handsets to Vodafone at the end of 2006 and the company shipped O2 Xda Zinc PDA phones and the O2 Graphite smartphones to O2 Asia Pacific in the first quarter of 2007. Asustek's first own-brand 3G handset, P735, also hit market in March.
However, the sources claimed that Asustek was not able to pass O2's network validation for its 3G handset (Xda Zinc) in Britain, and rumors began surfacing that the company would adjust its roadmap.

SNDK, JNPR had bucked the trend during their sell-off moments last year, and in Feb 07 respectively. They traded highly opposite to Nas, DJ, and SP500 during their sell-off and recovery. I agree that after the capitulation there are very few sellers left. The stock is in strong hands now. Even shorties became long. All trading books incl. Cramer said the same thing. This is time to BUY at bottom. An ER announcement is probably worth a solid point up as investors can see the light at the end of the tunnel.
