Legacy airlines don't have much choice. Advanced IFE, VOD deployments are becoming standard even for non-international flights. If they want to stay at the table, they'll have to ante up.
"I'd be surprised if they bought them for their shorter flights though"
That's what I thought at first, but according to Ryanair's CEO recent comments on their trial with the digE, even on short haul flights they had pretty high rental rates, enough to justify the expense of deployment. Given the stereotypical view of American addiction to video entertainment and short attention span versus Europeans, I'd expect similar if not better results in the N. American market.
Maybe no gambling, but...
"''We have entertained quite a few other ideas"
"As we explore different options we will
update our website to
show the different possibilities. It is a fun product
with a lot of
exciting opportunities"
....its sounds like there maybe other iterations of the digE with features we haven't even speculated on yet.
"those who are seling will be buying back"
and vice-versa LOL
Did I say UN, sorry I meant to say League of Nations LOL
Not me, U2 has usually been for bringing about change from within through legitimate channels (Bono works with the UN, the White House, etc. to try to get aid for his charities). IMO, same philosophy here, he knows Apple has been the one providing a legitimate compromise that unleashes the power of digital media to the masses.
Putting the most positive spin on their losses - EDIG has accrued the mother of all tax write-offs against future profits.
Yes, but they have Howard Stern! Then again, we've got (had) JoJo, FF, and RP. Shock & awe, LOL
LOL - that's rich, the head of MSFT lecturing on ethics.
OH MY GOD, NOWHERE DOES IT SAY THAT AMR IS PAYING IMS TO TEST THEIR SYSTEM, IN FACT THE OPPOSITE THEY ARE GIVING IT TO THEM FOR FREE. I BET THAT THEY ARE ONLY PAYING THEM A ONE TIME ENGINEERING FEE, NOTHING IN THE PR SAYS OTHERWISE SO IT MUST BE TRUE. YOU IMS HYPES HAVEN'T SHOWN ANY EVIDENCE TO THE CONTRARY.
Sounds familiar? That's how you usually spin an EDIG PR.
Agreed with AMR, as a major they could deploy both systems as needed.
Not so sure about Virgin, the low cost model is all about simplicity and part of that is product uniformity from planes to IFE. I don't see any of the new model airlines opting for more than one system.
CD, you are guilty of netiquette faux pas #1
Sharp eye! Remember to ask the boss for the yearly bonus!
Hilarious, someone trying to compare a tech. startup to a Fortune 100 company. ROFLMAO, it's not EDIG I'm laughing at!!!!
Here's a real screamer, try taking that P/S ratio and boost EDIG's annual rev.s to 10 million, wash and rinse and compare. How do you like them apples?
Agreed, WAEA has shown that things are bleak and looking bleaker. Keep up the the good work.
No I don't consider them the manufacturer. There are very few N. American manufacturers left in electronics. Everything is outsourced to Asia. They are however the designer and integrator which is the role and strength of most N. American tech firms and which is why they keep the lion's share of the profits.
That I can agree to, let's just not go to the extreme (as Cass and others do) of implying that because they don't manufacture or brand, they aren't making any money off of IFE deals that APS is closing.
No, it says APS. Does that mean all those OEM/ODM manufacturers don't make any money because they remain anonymous? Wow, if so, there sure seem to be a lot of Mercedes/BMWs in Taiwan, Hong Kong, etc. Where is the money coming from? Inquiring minds want to know!
CD, I suggest that you...FOLLOW THE MONEY it leads straight from APS to EDIG. At such time that it does not travel from A to B, we can talk again.
No spin, if you want to pick nits. Just saying that EDIG gets paid right now to set up the manufacturing and its EDIG that gets the check from APS for selling the units. Thats the point that Cass and others seem to have so much trouble interpreting.
Canned response from those 2: "sure these orders are manufactured by EDIG, but it doesn't say that APS can't go to other manufactureres." Agreed... just keep telling yourselves that.
And I already know that they will start saying that nowhere is it stated that EDIG owns the rights to this installed next gen system and that EDIG was probably only payed engineering fees for it.
Sadly predictable.
Anyway, its okay APS can keep paying EDIG these 'recurring' million dollar fees.
More great news. Its good to see APS is establishing complementary relationships (inflight Dublin) that supplement the abilities of the digE platform (in this case with additional, customized content) and give it access to more markets.
I think you're a bit TOO close to this investment! LOL
Thanks med.rare.
I see a picture of the digeplayer booth (6th from the bottom)and that looks like FF's back. I don't recognize the other guy.
I'm guessing the top 2 pictures are the IMS PEA system (maybe not now that I look closer at the 2nd shot, it seems more like a standard notebook) and the next two are portable IFE systems based on a creative PVP.
Did I miss anything?
Nice to see EDIG put out a PR over the Ryanair deal.
This caught my eye:
"We are very pleased to be working with APS in offering innovative video-on-demand (VOD) systems to the transportation and leisure industries"
Hopefully it means that they continue to actively pursue markets outside of the airlines as well. I can imagine that the content providers are foaming at the mouth to help them, since it expands their markets (and revenue) into areas they previously were excluded from (hotels, trains, etc.), and our solid customer base in the airline industry means that they will trust us first to deliver in other markets. I do think EDIG or APS would do well to sign up partners with expertise in these markets though, as I fear APS may already be overwhelmed just from the airline part of the business.
$2k a pop. This must be for the higher capacity players. I wonder if this includes any of the next gen. features (wireless, charging cart,etc.). If not those could get prices north of $2k.
"Can you verify your supposedly factual statement that all digeplayers (including those recently announced and all in the future) will be purchased "from" e.Digital?"
Can you verify otherwise?
"why would APS and Wencor continue to order digeplayers through e.Digital instead of paying a small licensing fee? "
oh, I don't know, maybe because APS is contractually obligated to get them this way? and maybe because EDIG could refuse to license THEIR design if they didn't.
Sorry Cass, I know all these orders must really be eating at your spleen, but you'll have to try harder!
Yes, you're right, I didn't dig deep enough into the YES variants. Looking at it that way YES solo and the IMS are about the same weight as the digE.
" the content will "self-destruct"
I find IMS' 'mission impossible' marketing pretty funny.
Just looking at the weights of the dige vs. the upcoming competition in that article. It seems that our unit is quite a bit heavier, any ideas why, seems like most of the innards should be similar.
I'd say there's more evidence to support the idea that they are getting paid on a continuing basis for digE sales than (as you seem to say with no evidence) that they aren't.
"common sense should tell you something is wrong!"
It sure is, mostly with your reasoning.
"latest technology licensed from e.Digital"
You know what the digEplayer is, then I'm sure you know the meaning of the word license. That usually implies payment.
Well credit to you and Jeau (and you and you and you - damn sound of music implanted in my head)
Great find mil. Obviously they are not announcing every new customer that comes on board.
From my best recollection we have Alaska, jetsgo, Hawaiian, and KLM as CONFIRMED customers (those that are actually deploying and not just testing). That means we have 4 others that haven't been publicly announced (perhaps at WAEA)
And this part about the embedded system is brand new. It will be interesting to see the details. Is it for IFE retrofit (doubtful for preinstalled systems), just a digE with some mounting hardware? I would like to see if they will be introducing anything on the game/net access front (from the wireless company displaying in their booth it sounds like they will have something to say). All in all, good stuff.
You know things have gotten bad when we start referring nostalgically to the music of the 80s, LOL.
Falco, anyone?
Cisco?...Al Gore?
"The group attributed the decline mainly to CD burning and illegal downloading, competition for consumer spending from DVDs and cellphones and economic uncertainty, particularly in Latin America and Asia"
I attribute it mostly to recycled garbage (another remake anyone?) being pushed on consumers, and radio stations who manage to rotate <200 songs in a week.
"Pace launches world's first mobile PVR for payTV"
Launch has a vague definition (even Pace's product is not available immediately), but this would seem incorrect, shouldn't Fusion's product lay claim to this title? And I doubt that Pace is unaware of that. Not much journalism going on.
Pretty sneaky, sis.
OT: Remember that big legal battle between the Apple itunes music store and Apple corps (the Beatles record label)?
Looks like its about to be resolved:
