Biz Beat: Hanford metal foundry looks to supply nuclear shielding material to Asian nations
By Seth Nidever
snidever@HanfordSentinel.com
Hanford is known for a lot of things: Dairies, a famous ice cream parlor, uniquely aromatic H20 and a small-town atmosphere.
What it isn't known for is a metal alloy company that wants to supply nuclear storage containers to Japan, Korea and China.
Thresher Industries, a metal foundry off 13th Avenue near Armona, has big aspirations.
It's probably the only publicly traded company with headquarters in Kings County, according to Jay Salyer, manager at Kings Economic Development Corporation.
Company founder and CEO Tom Flessner wants to supply nuclear shielding material to Asia and elsewhere.
The nuclear shielding involves composite metal plates embedded with a material that aids in the absorption of radiation from spent nuclear fuel rods.
The plates can be used for storage, but are best suited for transporting spent nuclear fuel.
That's the company's long term vision. Currently, however, it is pursuing applications for its unique aluminum alloy castings in the automotive industry, in agriculture and in a myriad of other uses.
Thresher has two patented alloys that provide less heat expansion, higher strength and greater wear resistance.
Since Thresher went public in 2006, it has acquired Talon Composites, a company with a metal matrix material designed for nuclear shielding.
But setbacks in a plan to build a joint production facility in South Korea have caused Thresher to reorient itself.
For now, the Talon Composites building next to Thresher is idle. Flessner said it will start up in a couple of months to produce non-nuclear metal matrix material, principally for aftermarket automotive components.
"(The nuclear side) has potential, but right now, we've switched focus to concentrate on what we do really well," Flessner said.
The Thresher Industries main foundry building, where its high quality aluminum castings are made, is operational.
The foundry supplies products to agribusiness, such as aluminum wheels for strawberry planters.
On Wednesday, the company announced a $1.3 million order from Plantel Nurseries, a Santa Maria firm that supplies vegetable seedlings to farmers who want to speed up their planting schedules.
The company is one of several U.S. foundries that have found ways to keep their production from going overseas.
Most metal casting is now done in China and India, Flessner said.
Flessner said his business doesn't compete with overseas foundries because they mass produce a much poorer quality product under conditions in which workers are exploited.
Thresher products made in Hanford are "low volume, high margin," said Jeff Tolle.
"We don't want to make millions of everything. We want to make thousands of things," Flessner said.
Flessner believes that the demand for aftermarket automobile parts, such as alloy brake components, will continue to increase despite a poor overall economy.
One automotive application is in engines that use nitrous oxide. Standard engines have trouble handling the intense combustion pressure that nitrous oxide produces. Thresher's alloys, with much higher strength, can tolerate it better, Flessner said.
The company also makes products for the defense industry, Flessner said.
Sales last year were around $300,000, Flessner said. He's hoping for $3 million to $4 million this year.
The company has 11 employees now. Flessner wants 20 by year's end.
"When you start from scratch, it's a really tough go. I'm hopeful for the company," Salyer said.
One of Thresher's current ventures is to set up a program where Cal Poly San Luis Obispo students can test some of its metal components in the lab, Flessner said.
Flessner, who relocated from Orange County to Lemoore, said it took him awhile to get used to Kings County.
The company has no plans to move its Hanford headquarters, Flessner said.
"(Kings County) gets under your skin and you start to like it," he said.

Expansion plans are moving along as planned and Thresher is hoping to have a presence in the eastern U.S. as early as May, most likely the Michigan area. Been out to the facility twice now and without a doubt they need to expand, she's bustling and full. Interested to see how the company business plans unfolds over the next 6-18 months, they have the product to revolutionize the automotive industry just need to take baby steps to get er' done.
Made it but it was a long road with bumps along the way. Forgot to set a stop loss a year ago and lost power, when it finally came back three hours later i was down about 67K. Took me a month to recoup the loss and get back on the right track. Another thing i learned is to never, ever, look your account balance or profit/loss during a trade, just trust your chart analysis and when it hits a top or bottom it's time to exit or enter. By looking at your account balances this allows emotion to get in the way. ALWAYS trade of the chart. Good luck when you get rollin' and remember it's only money, by keeping this in mind you'll learn to trust yourself and the game comes easy.
Wow quick and well done my friend. Took me alot longer but i only make a few trades a day and only had 5K to work with to begin. Amazing how the pile builds if you stay disiplined to your charts, hardest lesson to learn by many whom i've spoken with who have failed in the game.
Congrats Glance!! Took me 5 years to hit my first million and it's been a tough 2 years creeping up to 1.425 as of right now. What pairs to you primarily play? I strictly trade the EUR/USD and EUR/JPY. I studied the chart patterns and reactions of the two pairs for about a year and a half before playing the game. Once you learn a pair well and how it reacts it's a much easier game. To many people trade to many pairs and fail bad at this game but if you can stay focused on one or two success is very achievable. I don't post here much but do glance at your columns from time to time, never to old to learn a few new tricks. Once again congratulations on your accomplishments and good luck!
Visited the facility without a doubt it's a real company and in need for expansion as they definetly need more room. Eastern expansion will be great and help them utilize economies of scale. Right now shipping costs associated with the booming business out east is hampering the companies profits. This will soon change, we'll be receiving the expansion news in the next few months as well as additional non-dilutive financing which is complete. Accumulate here from other profits it will pay big over the next 2-3 years.
Alright had a old friend directed me to this bad boy can someone give me a quick snapshot of what to expect here, i'm just to damn lazy to DD like i used to :)
Received another email update from this pos company. Business is chugging along and although they don't PR for shi$ they have received additional contrats and stated that all is going well. If the ever decide to actually run a decent PR campaign this bad boy will roll up nice. Send them emails and light a fire under their azzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
**THRI** subber w/ financing and expansion news on the way. It's .0001 season and this dog is the next to hunt. ROOF ROOF
**THRI** subber with financing and expansion news on the way. It's .0001 season and this dog is the next to hunt.

I was just happy to see a nice clean facility with alot of activity. They're definetly not short on work, now it's time to make the balance sheet look good :)).
Ran out to Hanford yesterday afternoon to check out the facility and it looks like a very nice clean environment. Without question they need the eastern expansion project to occur soon, as the place was bustling with activity and actually a little small for what it appeared that they would need for the current rate of production. All in all a good experience and i expect some nice things out of the company in this coming year.
Pretty damn good buddy!!! Havn't played in penny land for a while as the option game has been great with the VIX going through the roof. I'll be checking in from time to time and looking to get back into this action for some fun shortly. Fishing has been good also so it's cut into my trading time a bit :))). I'll be around my friend and i like the board!
Beano dropping in to give a shout out to all the FCCN players. Good to still see a strong following here. Strong product IMO i'll be looking for another play here in the next few months. Keep it real and between the lines this weekend FELLAS!!!
Your my boy BLUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Good week buddy i've been checking the board from time to time and if i wasn't so busy piling in the money on the Q's per my 1/5 no brainer right now i'd be loading the boat with you :). I'll be back around here shortly once the VIX settles.
Fair Value for the company right now is around 7-8 million market cap IMO. This year this may drastically change as business has been good. Fair value right now tops around .0008 but by next year we could see a stock trading as high as .003-4
Doesn't mean much but this is a great lotto play will be hitting alot of radars once we break .0002. Then those who do some research here will be buyers. Have patience it will run.
Received an email back from Roger and a reverse split is not in the plans for the company. He did state however that they did have a 504 open for continuing operations in late November thus the influx of shares. As they've expanded the business and brought in additional machinery and materials for future usage i don't see this as a bad thing but a mode for expansion and profitability. With company executives owning preferred as well as free trading shares this shows me where they know that the company is headed. Patience will pay off here.
Yep last year was rough for the company but as with all companies expanding and growing some pain is to be expected. The corner has been turned and profitability will be achieved this year as well as expansion into the eastern U.S. with an additional facility. One of the best under the radar plays out there right now IMO.
Open Letter to Investors and Shareholders of Thresher Industries
Hanford, California January 9, 2008
State of the Corporation
Coming off a difficult but rewarding year, we have seen significant changes in
Thresher Industries, our customer base, our Talon Division and our management
team and have restructured the organization to take advantage of those changes.
Over the past six months our efforts have been rewarded; our current press release
regarding the contract with Plantel Nurseries is just one of several exciting new
programs we are undertaking as we prepare to increase production and grow
Thresher Industries significantly.
I am very proud to announce that Dr. Bill Harrigan, PHD Metallurgist has joined our
team as an advisor to help define direction for the composites group and to assist us
in development of advanced metal matrix composites for cast applications. Dr.
Harrigan is highly respected in the industry and is a leader in advanced materials.
We look forward to Dr. Harrigan’s guidance and influence for our composites
business.
To allow our company to adapt faster we have made Talon Composites a more
integral part of Thresher Industries, renaming this division Thresher Composites
Group. The Thresher Composites Group, under direction from Dr. Harrigan, will
develop unique market driven cast composite alloys for our customers. With this
change Dr. Harrigan will oversee a development and testing program a major
university’s materials engineering department. Details regarding this program will be
released at a later date. The Thresher Composites Group will begin manufacturing
material for our customers in Q1 of this year. This new direction in metal matrix
composites allows us greater opportunity than being just a provider of nuclear
shielding materials; automotive aftermarket applications as well as electronics,
aerospace and defense systems all become target customers for these new
materials. Our objective for Thresher Composites is increased revenue and strong
net profit for this division.
As part of our restructuring we have added an additional key individual to our
Thresher management team. Jeff Tolle has joined our team as Controller in the
financial group. Previously Jeff has worked closely with our team to obtain private
funding as well as new customers and market development. Jeff has an extensive
background in startup companies and in the investment community. Jeff has proven
his abilities in the past year in helping our board and management team clearly
define our company and its goals as well as securing diverse customers for the
foundry.
Stock Related Issues and Financial Concerns
Since October 2006, none of our officers - CEO, CFO, insiders or control persons -
have sold any Thresher stock either issued to them or that they have purchased in
the open market. The consensus is that the current price of Thresher stock is
outrageously low and undervalued. Once the company shows its true worth to the
investment community we believe a more realistic value will be achieved. I speak for
those close to the company that feel there is value in the shares they have acquired
and they will not sell their shares until value and liquidity have been restored to the
company.
Thresher Industries has been successful in raising capital through several sources
other than selling stock. We have been working with a local California Central Valley
manufacturing business that has provided significant funds, enabling us to
accomplish goals without the need for selling further stock. With the purchase order
mentioned in our current press release we anticipate bank financing by way of either
a line of credit or purchase order financing providing
additional capital to fill orders, upgrade equipment and increase our customer base,
providing us with greater revenues while improving net profitability.
Recently there have been misleading and false statements regarding Thresher
Industries. First, we are a real manufacturing company with sales and value; we have a
strong yet diverse customer base and unique technologies. The company has a clearly
defined business plan and we are on track for a profitable year in 2008. We have added
strong players to our team, new customers, new materials and a new dedication to
become a leader in our industry. I wish all of our investors and business partners a
profitable and prosperous New Year.
Looks up and running to me, i know they had talked about a website update a while back. Wonder if they are changing hosting providers.
Good to see the BLUE HORSE SHOW SALOON in full force!!!!!! I've just turned into an options flipper until the pennies heat up but i'll be around with you fellas looking for some diamonds in the ROUGH!!! YOUR MY BOY BLUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Subber just getting the news cranked up. 08' will be a big year here.

Only the start of the news here fellas the queue has alot of orders rolling in. 504 which is being used for working capital and the eastern expansion project is nearly exhausted and once this occurs we will roll up big here. As i stated a month ago 08' will be the turning point for Thresher with the Talon Composite acquisition showing some real nice #'s on the next few financial statements. Best subber in the SHOW!
Finally received a response back from the company today. Update is coming shortly, didn't elaborate on what to expect but they're ALIVE lol. Will be adding more 1's here.
Financials are released via pink sheets more news will be coming shortly on expansion details and additional contracts, etc.
Financials are nice but the upcoming completion of the new facility and additional gov. contracts as well as others spewing out of the queue will give this a big boost. Nice to hit ground floor on a big opportunity that's legit. They don't come around to often down here in the dumps :))
Nope 5BB authorized and 3.3BB outstanding. Shares were issued for upcoming expansion projects as well as to finish of the acquistion regarding Talon. Q4 of this year and Q1 of 08' will be the turning point for Thresher. I've spoken to Roger numerous times and after alot of bleed sweat and tears the business is finally rollin' in the right direction. Expecting big things and making a visit to the cali facility in april for a visit :)).

Stated that a R/S wasn't planned or needed. I guess we'll see what the future PR's bring. The way Thresher handled the Talon acquisition may be very good to investors as a clause in the acq. contract was breeched. Things may get real interesting here soon with this lotto play, stay tuned :))
