Gulf MARINE Fuel Blended with Isobutanol from Gevo Inc. is Suitable and Safe for Racing Boats and Recreational Marine Engines
Gulf MARINE biofuel with isobutanol is one of the first fuels on the market to comply with biofuel recommendations issued last week by the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) and the American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC).
The new recommendations come after five years of extensive marine industry testing of fuel containing isobutanol, a renewable biofuel alternative provided by Gevo Inc. for recreational boating. Those testing the fuel included the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, Argonne National Laboratory, Volvo-Penta, Bombardier Recreational Products, Evinrude, Yamaha, Mercury Marine, Honda, Tohatsu, Indmar and the U.S. Coast Guard.
The testing was undertaken to confirm that recreational boaters could power their engines with gasoline blends that contain isobutanol as a replacement for ethanol, and experience fewer problems and better performance while still meeting government-mandated Renewable Fuel Standards.
Gulf MARINE fuel is made with Gevo-supplied isobutanol at a 12.5% ratio to gasoline. Gulf offers two octane choices: 93 and 100. Gulf also offers a 16.1% blend for racing applications only.
Gulf MARINE delivers on the primary benefits of isobutanol-blended gasoline, which include improved moisture and water resistance, higher energy content, and preventing phase separation in the fuel system and reducing engine corrosion.
Isobutanol is a registered fuel additive with blends of up to 12.5% allowed for on road gasoline. Gulf MARINE fuel is available at participating Gulf retailers and marinas in factory-sealed packages of 5 gallons and 55 gallons.
“Last year, we successfully launched our isobutanol-blended gasoline for recreational boating use, and the endorsement by the NMMA and ABYC will help more boaters know that isobutanol-blended gasoline is a safe and effective biofuel,” said Jess Hewitt, President of HYPERFUELS, the exclusive licensee of Gulf Racing Fuels.”
Pat Gruber, CEO of Gevo, Gulf Racing’s isobutanol supplier, said, “We have been working with Gulf Racing Fuels since 2013 to develop a commercially available gasoline using isobutanol. The endorsement from these boating organizations validates this work and will be a boon for isobutanol-blended fuels worldwide.”

Gevo Announces Sales of Isooctene to BCD Chemie, a Subsidiary of Brenntag
Commences Relationship to Begin the Marketing of Renewable Hydrocarbons Into Europe
ENGLEWOOD, Colo., Sept. 28, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Gevo, Inc. (NASDAQ:GEVO) announced it has begun selling renewable isooctene to BCD Chemie, a subsidiary of Brenntag. Initial orders in 2015 are expected to result in revenues to Gevo of over $1 million. The isooctene will be produced at Gevo's biorefinery in Silsbee, Texas, derived from isobutanol produced at Gevo's plant in Luverne, Minn. Gevo's biorefinery is operated in conjunction with South Hampton Resources.
BCD Chemie is targeting applications in Europe with Gevo's isooctene. This commences a relationship with BCD Chemie that may include the marketing of other hydrocarbon products, including isooctane and jet fuel, and builds on Gevo's existing partnership with Brenntag in Canada, which is currently selling Gevo's isobutanol as a solvent in Canada.
Isooctene and isooctane can be used as high-octane fuel blend components used in gasoline formulations. Higher octane ratings in fuel are important for high performance engines to minimize engine knock. The additional value of these products are reflected in the market price, which in Europe can range up to $7.00-$10.00 per gallon for petroleum-based isooctene and isooctane.
Renewable hydrocarbons such as isooctene can directly replace petroleum-based hydrocarbons without any compromise of performance. The use of these renewable hydrocarbons enables companies to meet regulatory requirements for renewable content in fuels while satisfying the performance requirements of their customers.
"BCD Chemie has begun purchasing continuously increasing quantities of renewable hydrocarbons from Gevo for distribution to selected customers. These customers are very excited to utilize renewable components in their products as they are green replacements for fossil hydrocarbons, which benefit the environment without any performance loss. EPA accuses VW of cheating on emission rules
http://money.cnn.com/2015/09/18/autos/epa-cheating-vw/index.html
CNNMoney (New York) September 18, 2015: 1:37 PM ET
Diesel cars from Volkswagen and Audi cheated on clean air rules by including software that made the cars' emissions look cleaner than they actually were, according to federal and California regulators.
The regulators say that the software on the cars turns on emission controls only when it detects that the car was being tested.
"The effectiveness of these vehicles' pollution emissions control devices is greatly reduced during all normal driving situations," said the Environmental Protection Agency's notice to the company. "This results in cars that meet emissions standards in the laboratory or testing station, but during normal operation, emit nitrogen oxides at up to 40 times the standard."
There are nearly 500,000 of these diesel cars on U.S. roads. The models include the VW Jetta, the Beetle and the Golf from model years 2009 through 2015, the Passat from 2014-2015 as well as the Audi A3, model years 2009-2015. The Audi luxury brand is owned by Volkswagen Group. (VLKPF)
clean air act violations Regulators say that Volkswagen and Audi cars were trying to evade emissions standards.
Owners of the affected cars do not face health risks, according to the EPA, and can to continue to drive or sell them. But the EPA has ordered VW to recall the cars and fix the violation. No recall has yet been announced.
VW said it is cooperating with the investigation.
The EPA did not say how much VW would ultimately be fined for this infraction.
Diesel cars generally get much better fuel economy than gasoline powered cars. For instance the Jetta diesel gets 36 miles per gallon in combined city and highway driving, according to EPA estimates, compared to 32 mpg in a gasoline-powered version. Controlling emissions from diesel engines has been a challenge for automakers, however. Emissions controls can add significantly to the cost of diesel-powered cars.
Representatives from EPA and the California Air Resources Board, which did the testing that uncovered the problem, would not say whether a change a software to correct the emissions violation would have a negative impact on the cars' performance or fuel economy.
The Volkswage Golf has won a number of awards, including Motor Trend Car of the Year, in part because of its wide range of available engine options including diesel and electric power.

HyperSolar Surpasses Critical Voltage Threshold to Split Water Molecules for Renewable Hydrogen Fuel Production
Company achieves major milestone of 1.55 volts in its quest to generate renewable hydrogen using any source of water and sunlight
SANTA BARBARA, CA – September 15, 2015 - HyperSolar, Inc. (OTCQB: HYSR), the developer of a breakthrough technology to produce renewable hydrogen using sunlight and any source of water, today announced that it had reached 1.55 volts (V), a significant milestone achievement in its effort to split water molecules for the production of renewable hydrogen fuel.
While the Company had previously met the challenge of exceeding 1.23 V, the theoretical minimum voltage needed to split water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen, a minimum of 1.5 V is needed to do so for commercially viable real world applications.
Examples of these commercial applications include hydrogen-charging stations for fuel-cell vehicles, or warehouse transportation for big box retailers. The 1.55 V breakthrough, in a low-cost single solar cell element, is representative of the tremendous progression of the technology, as the Company announced its 1.4 V breakthrough just one month ago.
The results were recorded at the University of Iowa campus research location where researchers are currently focused on further increasing the voltages and currents achievable from their inexpensive light driven hydrogen generation particles.
Following this breakthrough, the company will focus its efforts on increasing the hydrogen production efficiencies of these particles by bonding the ideal fuel production catalyst to the low-cost high-voltage solar cell.
In order to achieve this, the company is currently exploring two parallel approaches. The first is to identify materials that interface with well-known hydrogen production catalysts, such as the platinum on solar particles, to improve sunlight-to-hydrogen conversion efficiency. The second is to pursue methods that further increase photo voltages of solar particles to greater than 1.7 V that allow integration of cheaper earth abundant catalysts without significant loss in hydrogen production efficiency.
“This announcement represents one of the most important milestone achievements the Company has made to date,” said Tim Young, CEO of HyperSolar. “Both the University of Iowa and University of California, Santa Barbara teams have been instrumental in spurring the speed at which our technology has developed, resulting in this voltage breakthrough. We are focused on identifying the next steps for the technology that will make it possible for us to scale up to make a commercial technology that can produce hydrogen fuel at or near the point of distribution, using only water and sunlight.”
HyperSolar’s research is centered on developing a low-cost and submersible hydrogen production particle that can split water molecules under the sun, emulating the core functions of photosynthesis. Each particle is a complete hydrogen generator that contains a novel high voltage solar cell bonded to chemical catalysts by a proprietary encapsulation coating. A video of an early proof-of-concept prototype can be viewed at http://hypersolar.com/application.php.
About HyperSolar, Inc.
HyperSolar is developing a breakthrough, low cost technology to make renewable hydrogen using sunlight and any source of water, including seawater and wastewater. Unlike hydrocarbon fuels, such as oil, coal and natural gas, where carbon dioxide and other contaminants are released into the atmosphere when used, hydrogen fuel usage produces pure water as the only byproduct. By optimizing the science of water electrolysis at the nano-level, our low cost nanoparticles mimic photosynthesis to efficiently use sunlight to separate hydrogen from water, to produce environmentally friendly renewable hydrogen. Using our low cost method to produce renewable hydrogen, we intend to enable a world of distributed hydrogen production for renewable electricity and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. HyperSolar Releases Company Update
CEO Tim Young Addresses Development of Technology and Market Opportunities
SANTA BARBARA, CA--(Marketwired - July 21, 2015) - HyperSolar, Inc. (OTCQB: HYSR), the developer of a breakthrough technology to produce renewable hydrogen using sunlight and water, today provided a Company update from its CEO, Tim Young. Mr. Young detailed some of the accomplishments from the past six months:
•Technological Advancements. The first half of 2015 has yielded two significant announcements in regards to our technology. The first was that our team of scientists identified a low-cost, water-based manufacturing process, allowing our team to increase the voltage needed to produce renewable hydrogen using only sunlight. In order to do so, the team at University of Iowa developed an innovative and patent protected water-based process where solar cell materials are stacked on top of each other literally by "dipping" into low-cost beakers of solutions containing appropriate chemistries. This allows our process to rely on inexpensive earth abundant materials to produce the solar cell component, rather than rare earth materials. The second announcement surrounded voltage, as our research team achieved a breakthrough milestone of 1.4 volts (V), a giant step forward towards reaching the 1.5 V needed to effectively split water molecules in commercial systems. This announcement, coupled with the identification of the low-cost process, allows our research teams to focus efforts on developing a complete prototype of a self-contained solar-powered hydrogen production unit with photovoltage more than 1.5 V.
•Hydrogen Fuel Market Continues to Expand. 2014 saw a high volume of attention drawn to the hydrogen fuel space, which maintained momentum throughout this year. The automotive industry continues to dominate headlines, as manufacturers including BMW, Hyundai, Toyota, Honda, and others have either released hydrogen fuel cell vehicles now commercially available, or have plans to do so in the very near future. This has generated significant mainstream consumer interest, while there has been increased adoption and exploration of hydrogen fuel solutions in the industrial sector. Major brands including Wal-Mart Kroger, Proctor & Gamble, Home Depot, and others have established relationships with companies like PlugPower in order to power material handing fleets, such as forklifts, in their distribution warehouses. The market for these applications and others looks strong, as Research and Markets just released a report -- Global Fuel Cell market Forecast and Opportunities, 2020 -- projecting the fuel cell market to surpass $3 billion USD by 2020.
•Exposure. HyperSolar has also achieved a larger profile within media coverage of the hydrogen fuel cell industry. Much of this coverage is attributed to the Company's technological breakthroughs, an example being the GreenCarReports article chronicling the 1.4 V milestone achievements. This article garnered extensive attention from devoted readers, resulting in over 235 comments on the article, fostering discussion not only about the Company, but also hydrogen fuel production in general. HyperSolar leadership has also been tasked with commenting on the hydrogen sector, as The Guardian, one of the six largest newspapers in the world, sought our insight for a story on artificial photosynthesis as a means for turning CO2 into fuel for a car. For this piece, our lead researcher, Syed Mubeen Jawahar Hussaini, assistant professor of chemical and biochemical engineering at the University of Iowa, contributed his thoughts along with my own.
•Need For Renewable Hydrogen Solutions. As the media and financial analysts continue to explore the viability of a hydrogen future, the need for renewable hydrogen has emerged as a popular discussion topic. Most hydrogen today is "brown" hydrogen made from natural gas in a process that emits carbon dioxide during manufacturing. By comparison, "green" hydrogen, such as ours, is completely renewable, developed from sources such as wind or solar, resulting in a much cleaner process in which the only by-product is water. There are a number of global advancements being made in the renewable space. Recently, Air Products supplied a SmartFuel station to India, marking the first solar powered hydrogen fueling station in the country. However, the Air Products system uses conventional electrolyzers, an inherently expensive technology, to perform the water-splitting. Shortly following this announcement, several articles appeared stressing the importance of identifying renewable forms of hydrogen production, inferring that only then would hydrogen fuel be considered a true zero emission energy alternative. HyperSolar's process is completely renewable and designed to be cost-competitive with "brown" hydrogen; increasing its marketability as regulators seek to reduce the impact of fossil fuels in the hydrogen fuel production process.
Mr. Young stated, "We are pleased with the technology advancements made due to the collaboration between the University of Iowa and University of California, Santa Barbara, which has resulted in the major breakthroughs achieved this year. We believe that these announcements, coupled with the growing market appetite for consumer and industrial hydrogen fuel cell applications, represent a significant opportunity for us. We will continue to strive to develop a prototype capable of showcasing our technology's potential for real world systems, all while driving down cost. This strategy is what we believe will establish us as a major player in the hydrogen industry, ultimately realizing investor value."
HyperSolar's research is centered on developing a low-cost and submersible hydrogen production particle that can split water molecules under the sun, emulating the core functions of photosynthesis. Each particle is a complete hydrogen generator that contains a novel high voltage solar cell bonded to chemical catalysts by a proprietary encapsulation coating. HyperSolar Inc (OTCMKTS:HYSR) moved a step closer to producing commercially viable hydrogen fuel after making a breakthrough in the splitting of water molecules to produce renewable hydrogen fuel. A recent study was successful in attaining the $1.4 volts milestone moving the company closer to using artificial photosynthesis to split water into hydrogen and oxygen.
Low-Cost Process`
The 1.4 volts achievement is a big milestone, HyperSolar Inc (OTCMKTS:HYSR) research team having struggled to generate $1.25 volts from the process. Plans are already in place to exceed the 1.5 volts the amount of voltage normally needed to split water in commercial systems.
HyperSolar Inc (OTCMKTS:HYSR) Iowa research team has already identified a low-cost process that will replace the relatively expensive vapor deposition process used to make the solar cell component. The breakthrough process should overcome the critical cost challenge that should allow the research team to focus more on developing a complete prototype of a self-contained solar powered hydrogen production unit. The prototype is to be used to develop an economical large-scale manufacturing process.
CEO, Tim Young, remains confident that they are making strides in the right direction as they move closer to developing cost-effective real world systems for producing hydrogen. The idea is to develop systems that can produce hydrogen by using only water and the power of the sun.
Readily Available Market
HyperSolar Inc (OTCMKTS:HYSR) remains confident that as commercial adoption widens in consumer markets for fuel cell vehicles, there will always be a readily available market for its products currently in the pipeline. The latest development comes on the heels of the ongoing paradigm shift in the auto industry with respect to alternative fuels
BMW is on course to release its 5 Series Grand Turismo Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicle as Hyundai maintains that hydrogen powered vehicles could be the future of eco-friendly cars. The automotive industry is expected to provide the ready market for HyperSolar hydrogen fuel technology.
