Quote of the Week – Read in my October issue from Bulk Transporter, from Brent Bergevin, EVP at Love’s, talking electric heavy-duty trucks: “California already has rolling blackouts the way they operate. Now you put a heavy-duty truck charging system out there, and (by some estimates) truck stops of the future will need as much power as NFL stadiums. So there are lot of factors to overcome. A hydrogen or electric truck is $450,000 to $500,000 and you can buy a diesel truck for $140,000, so you’re buying three trucks against one – and diesel emissions are 98% less than they were 15 years ago.” “No one can afford to buy a $500,000 truck”.
Tesla Inc (NASDAQ: TSLA), Nio Inc (NYSE: NIO), XPeng Inc (NYSE: XPEV) and Li Auto (NASDAQ: LI) are all eating into one another’s margins as they slash costs on their EVs to tempt more consumers towards their brands in what is an increasingly saturated market.
Sustainability environmentalists are getting spanked. > Oil giants Exxon Mobil (NYSE:XOM) and Chevron (NYSE:CVX) have announced plans to significantly increase their oil and gas production, committing over $50 billion each to major acquisitions. This move defies the International Energy Agency's (IEA) forecast of fossil fuel demand peaking by 2030 due to the rise in electric vehicle sales and renewable energy uptake.
Chevron has proposed a $53 billion acquisition of Hess (NYSE:HES), marking a significant bet on Guyana's offshore production. The deal will place Chevron firmly in Guyana's emerging oil powerhouse through Hess' stakes in the Stabroek block and three other blocks. The Stabroek block is a vital offshore oil reservoir that has elevated Guyana's status in the global oil market. As part of the agreement, Chevron will also assume control over Hess' Bakken and Three Forks shale assets in North Dakota. The share exchange agreement stipulates 1.0250 Chevron shares for each Hess share, with the deal's completion set for 2024 when John Hess will join Chevron's board.
In a parallel move, Exxon Mobil has committed to a $60 billion deal to acquire Pioneer Natural Resources (NYSE:PXD), thus enhancing its presence in the Permian Basin. These deals are seen as low-cost production investments offering stability amidst uncertain future oil supplies from Russia and Venezuela.
Oil executives argue that these mergers will facilitate more investment into cleaner fuels such as carbon capture technology and hydrogen. Scott Sheffield, CEO of Pioneer Natural Resources, disputes the IEA's forecasts, insisting on lasting demand for fossil fuels.
Despite these assertions, environmentalists criticize these actions as attempts to sustain profits from the existing business model rather than transitioning toward sustainability. Fatih Birol of the IEA emphasized that the global transition to clean energy is unstoppable. Meanwhile, Daniel Yergin, an oil historian, believes that consolidation enhances companies' resilience to meet various priorities simultaneously.
Scott Sheffield suggests that large European oil companies like Shell (LON:SHEL) and BP (NYSE:BP) will soon need to consolidate for energy security. However, the Environmental Defense Fund criticizes big oil companies for missing an opportunity to reinvent themselves, viewing these mergers as attempts to squeeze the last light out of the existing business model rather than transitioning to a sustainable future.

Unstaffed charging stations create an opportunity for EV charger thievery. Much like catalytic converters, charging cables are full of valuable copper wire.
Thieves have a new target – electric vehicle (EV) charging cables. With prices ranging from $300 to over $1,000, these cables are costly and not easily replaceable.
This past June in Oakland, Fox affiliate KTVU News reported that nearly a dozen charging cables were stolen at a recharge station. The vandals cut clean through the wires.
“Reports across the country document thieves targeting the EV charging cables for copper,” the station reported.
This new trend creates a huge problem, especially for those who live in apartments. Residents living in such units often rely on public charging stations. House dwellers can install a charger in their garages or near driveways, while apartment dwellers rarely have those options.
Yet even home charging stations are not immune to the problem. A Los Angeles homeowner told his local station, NBC4, that his security camera recorded a man in a hoodie and mask walking up his driveway, unplugging the cable from his car and the other end from the outside wall socket, and taking off on a bike.

I wonder how much cobalt element is used by Tesla. Around 40,000 child slaves in Congo work in hazardous conditions in cobalt mines, with inadequate safety equipment and for very little money. The cobalt is used in many products - including electric car batteries.
Electric vehicles like Tesla's produce far lower volumes of CO2 emissions in the course of driving. Instead, their emissions from sources like cobalt come about deeper in their production and supply chains. Elon Musk previously told CultureBanx, “We use less than 3% cobalt in our batteries." EV sector struggling > The strike against Ford may be over, but the company's electric vehicle woes are far from solved. The entire auto industry, grappling with steadily softening EV demand over cost and existential infrastructure challenges, is beginning to pull back its efforts to grow the sector.
Tesla is dealing with falling sales figures and gross margins amid an ongoing price war whose aim is to entice customers to go electric. General Motors is still locked in the throes of the auto strike, canceled an earlier plan with Honda to develop an affordable EV, citing the results of "extensive studies."
GM additionally ditched a target it once had to make 400,000 EVs by mid-2024 and went on to push back the production of its coming EV lineup.

A man in his 40's bought a new Tesla Model S and was out for a nice evening drive. The top was down, the breeze was blowing through what was left of his hair, and he decided to open her up. As the needle jumped up to 90 mph, he suddenly saw flashing red and blue lights behind him. "There's no way they can catch a Tesla," he thought to himself and opened her up further. The needle hit 100, 120.... then the reality of the situation hit him. "What the hell am I doing?" he thought and pulled over. The cop came up to him, took his license without a word, and examined it and the car. "It's been a long day, this is the end of my shift. I don't feel like more paperwork, so if you can give me an excuse for your driving that I haven't heard before, you can go." The guy thinks for a second and says, "Last week my wife ran off with a cop. I was afraid you were trying to give her back." "Have a nice weekend," said the officer.
