That scam telemarketer may be a Chinese kidnap_victim held in Burma
"On January 3, 2025, Wang Xing (stage name "Xingxing"), a Chinese actor, was deceived into a scam center in Myanmar by a fraud group under the pretext of "going to Thailand for filming work". After Wang Xing lost contact, his girlfriend Jiajia posted a message for help through social media and actively contacted relevant authorities. This incident attracted the attention of the Chinese film industry. Many actors posted about this matter, prompting the Chinese Embassy in Thailand, the Chinese Consulate General in Chiang Mai and the Thai police to intervene in the investigation and search and rescue.
Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra confirmed in an interview with the media at the Prime Minister's Office in Bangkok at 11:40 a.m. on January 7 that Wang Xing, who had lost contact at the Thai-Myanmar border, had been found."

"Thailand “stopped the electricity supply to Myanmar in five locations based on the decision of the National Security Council,” he told reporters.
“The electricity supply is not being stopped because the companies violated the contract, but because the electricity is being misused for scams, drugs and call centers,” he said."

"Power cut to site of global, billion-dollar scam industry. But will it halt the swindling?
"Thailand cut electricity supplies on Wednesday to several areas in neighboring Myanmar that are home to sites at the center of a global, billion-dollar online scam industry.
As of Wednesday afternoon, at least one of the scam compounds was still operating, according to a local NGO in contact with workers inside one location. However, it’s unclear whether the cuts impacted other scam site operations in the area."
Online scam factories – many run by Chinese crime syndicates – have proliferated in Myanmar, which has been riven by a bloody civil war since the military seized power in 2021."

More REIT dividend BS: "because these companies [reits] are required to pay at least 90% of its taxable income back to shareholders."
Of course, if there is no Taxable Income (which is often the situation) then nothing needs be paid.
I have a long-time friend, an economics professor, who always favored open trade. Out of the blue he become a Trump fan a few years ago.
I've never heard Taleb say ANYTHING that wasn't obvious to me. I don't own NVIDIA or much that would be considered extreme cutting edge.

I vividly remember calling out a university English teacher (not a professor) in 1963 or perhaps 1964 when he used Irregardless. I thought his use of it was was shocking then and he eventually corrected himself. Point is, you use it in a job application and you may well jeopardise your chance of getting the job.
Reminds me of the dictionaries that included "ain't" as an word years ago.
BTW, I had a good friend, an honors Yale English grad who loved peppering his Straight A+ papers with bilge like that.
.
1MBand: "Wonder how many people bought WBA shares after seeing that juicy 10% yield and thinking it was a steal." Plenty, I'm sure. but some never learn.
Never, never, never, buy a stock mainly for a gigantic dividend. But many IHubbers retirees do just that repeatedly. I've often posted about ultra high dividend scams where a ludicrously high payout is flashed... and then quickly cut. Beware especially REITs where an unsustainable fat dividend is a return of capital or financed with debt.
Borderline scams that prey on the elderly.
Seems nothing you've posted is going to happen. WBA stock plummets and dividend ends. Store traffic dwindles. But pump on, guy.

Two months ago, I tried buying something from Walgreens.com and couldn't. Was told that portion of their site was nonfunctional. That should have been a sign to dump WBA stock which is in my kids' accounts. Held, but certainly not buying more.
Both kids own WBA and UPS, but fortunately tons of SPY and QQQ.
Was reading again about the 1999 Atlanta stock trading shootings. You know how I think diversification is important. Apparently daytrader Mark Barton did too in killing his 13 victims.

Some things about the William Tyler Allen case were noteworthy. He had a finance degree from Miami of Ohio, a fine school, and was age 27 with a fair amount of experience. Like I often say, the motivations of some players puzzle me. I know some medicines have been associated with increased investing risk taking.
Hadn't read about his suicide before. Apparently he was from a very good family. His twin brother had died recently. He could have gone to 10 to 15 museum shows with that $700,000
"Family of Trader, 27, who lost $700,000 claim he became 'impulsive' after suffering brain injury as they sue broker for allowing risky investments"
* William Tyler Allen died by suicide in September 2021 after becoming 'distraught' over the loss
* His family say a brain injury he sustained in 2013 means he should not have been able to deal in risky stock deals
* They are suing online platforms Fidelity and Interactive Brokers over his death "

"A Wall Street trader who took his own life after losing $700,000 had a brain injury which left him 'impulsive' and should never have been allowed to make risky investments, his family claim.
William Tyler Allen, 27, died by suicide in September 2021 after becoming 'distraught' over sustaining the massive financial loss.
The Connecticut trader had been dealing in risky stock transactions using trading platforms Fidelity and Interactive Brokers prior to his death.
"Now his family is suing the platforms for allowing Allen to open self-directed investment funds with a 'substantial margin' despite his reduced capacity.
They argue brokers have a duty of care towards clients, especially those considered vulnerable." October 2023

LOLOLOL. Hardly. Borrows are often fully backed with cheap Reg S conv stock that can be dumped into the market quickly. You may be a dumb penny player, but the lenders aren't.
"Apparently there is a lender convinced they will survive."
I warn people about stock-driven suicides or even stock-driven murders which occur occasionally. Usually contain the same elements: 1) lack of intelligent diversification; 2) repeated averaging down and 3) often, borrowing to "play stocks."
"You’re just asking for more of the same." Actually it can get MUCH worse.

The world's first short, Isaac le Maire circa 1608. His target: Dutch East India Company stock.
"Many of these [shorter firms] inspired strong reactions from the public, and even scrutiny from regulators. Activist or not, one portfolio manager at a prominent firm based outside the U.S. described being a short seller as like being a member of a dysfunctional family. Some firms share ideas, but there is also plenty of acrimony and backbiting.
"It's not even a secret. It's not a happy family. We don't like each other," he said. ?????????????????????????????????????? THOUGHTS?

Where do you keep your phone? Mine's often up on the bar for charging, several feet off the floor. This is a important subject for discussion.

Else Nutrition Amends Convertible Security Financing
07:35 AM EST, 01/24/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Else Nutrition (BABY.TO), trading near its 52-week low, overnight Thursday said it signed a non-binding term sheet with Lind Global Fund II, pursuant to which both parties expect to amended a convertible security funding agreement for US$1.2 million in proceeds.
The company and Lind expect the proposed new funding to be completed in four tranches with the initial US$300,000 to be funded by Lind upon closing, followed by three additional tranches on April 1, July 1, and Oct. 1. The company will also issue detached warrants to Lind to buy shares related to the new funding and will be exercisable for 48 months from the date of issuance with an exercise price equal to 100% of the 5-day VWAP immediately prior to the closing date.
Else Nutrition expects to use the proceeds for general working capital.

Are you referring to those TV commercials by some woman who hawks her UTI products or some method to reduce/prevent UTIs? Does she seem legit to you? I've only seen the ads 3 or 4 times. When my wife was in the hospital, they used the PureWick system, if you're aware of that. Heard a commercial that mentioned that PureWick is now available for men and home versions too. Great news for those who have to flip stocks nonstop. But needs a slobber-guard.
Women especially should watch out for UTIs, which seem to be the fad ailment of recent years. They can mimic many problems including dementia. UTIs are rare with men.

Wifey ended up briefly in a nursing home some months ago. I was surprised that most residents had cell phones with them. She was there to rehab for about two weeks. The place was one of those one-star dives, but it was only a few miles from our house which was nice. Free with our Humana insurance.
You can't be choosy as room openings can be rare. A really nice five-star nursing home would have have cost about $12,000 a month no mater how short her stay would be and we knew little about her problem when she was first taken ill. I'm sure she could have used a laptop if she wanted to. Food was terrible but I and my kids would bring her Care Packages from the fast food places down the road. The nursing home was clean from what I could tell. Wife improved rapidly and is back home now.
BTW, I tried to tip an aide who was especially helpful. She said that wasn't permitted and declined.
Correction: "I don't own an itty bitty biomeds. Most are rubbish."
s/b I don't own ANY itty bitty biomeds. Most are rubbish.
Janice, have you ever known of anyone trading stocks from a nursing home?

True, I'm glad to see some sanity in this casino. I remember the negative reactions I got when I told friends/relatives about index funds in the 1980s/1990s. Brother In Law used to say "But You're Accepting Mediocrity,"
I got a curious letter from Morgan Stanley recently warning "About concentrated stock positions." By that they're surely talking about all the money I have in cap weighted index funds. Of course they only know about the contents of my Morgan Stanley account. I only have that concentration because I've held those assets for decades in some cases and didn't trade. Very unfortunate for MS! They must hate Buy/Hold S&P 500 index funds.
They don't know what I own in two brokerage accounts elsewhere... about 20 individual blue chip stocks and bonds and bank CDs plus I get about the maximum Social Security it's possible to get.... far more than wifey and I spend. Where was Morgan Stanley 35+ years ago when I started buying/holding index funds???????????
