The speed we have been receiving is certainly not the fastest available in Boise... Beyond that, speed is not my only consideration in this type of selection...
I have had some recent inquiries regarding a post which I allegedly posted on July 2nd. I have not posted on this board for several weeks. In fact I was out on the road for most of June (24 days) trying to run my own business. I then took a well deserved break from Tuesday the 2nd until Monday (thankfully a couple of days from now, almost regretting reading my ihub mail just now)... I have not posted because I do not believe anything I say will offer any information of significance to the members of this board. The longs have reason to try to prop the stock up. The pundits have their reasons to be negative (just look at the fundamentals and the lack of any real service availability to the general public).
Yes I am still using internet services from BoiseWiFi. Yes it seems to be fairly reliable. We do keep redundant services from the local cable company because I am always suspect of any new tech offering.
Please understand that my current interest lies in a Google like offering for Gigabit service (see Provo, Utah and Kansas City), which will offer broadband at 20 - 100 times current available speeds for $40 - $60 per month. This is the broadband of the future. WiFi like city services will fill the void in open environments but for the most part, this is a commodity item whose value will quickly diminish on a per Mbps value plane. In the mean time, I will continue to dip in and out of this forum to have a chuckle at all of the prognosticators, many of whom have no real grasp of technology but are clinging on to a dream, and all of the pundits, who can't seem to get the SEC interested in this small of a "scam" (I mean really, most of those getting hurt have already been hurt...).
I wish you all well in your pursuits. I have better things to do with my time than pay attention to this board and the caustic nature of the prose herein.
If you find yourselves in Boise, please don't hesitate to look me up. God luck with your little penny (sub-penny) stock.
Paul
I am not soliciting business advice. I am simply reporting my experience in response to requests from posters...
In the interest of open reporting, I thought I'd update... We are back up and running at about 50 x 18. Back to cable speed down and much faster up. The project that I am working on for a much bigger building needs 100 x 100. I have fiber in the building already and can achieve those speeds with that. I am waiting for Val to verify and prove the ability for me to get those speeds, reliably before I commit to that project.
It is not WiFi that I am using from BoiseWiFi. It is Line of Sight Radio Technology...
We are getting around 20 Mbps down consistently... Much slower than the 50Mbps we get from cable... The uplink speed is faster (around 13Mbps) but like most internet users we are very concerned with downlink speed...
We have had issues with the speed of the service recently and have not been using it but rather have been relying on our cable connection. I have been avoiding posting so as to give the company (BoiseWiFi in this case) a chance to work out the kinks without all of the scrutiny. I only replied because this is the second query in the last few days.
33Mbps down by 11Mbps up.
Don't know how long it was down as we left the redundant link up until this morning. We have had some heavy winds over the last 3 days... might be the cause.
...actually about to contact Val. The link wend down yesterday while we were in the middle of a group broadcast from Seattle. Thankfully I was able to switch to the redundant back up. Speed is slow this morning but the link is back.
Just a quick update... We have not had any connectivity issues since the day after install. Just ran a speed test. It has been fairly consistent at 65Mbps Down and 16Mbps Up.
I will say that it is a bit disconcerting that I have been contacted via my business email and twitter account asking for a review of the service. I would assume that there is some sort of privacy act which protects me from having my information shared. I do know that there are several MDGC followers who have been given my details and it leaves a bad taste in my mouth. If you want a review, give me verifiable details of who you are and I will consider it...
CBM, I agree, I continue to run redundant connections. So far though the MDGC connection has met specified req's. I am away on business today and tomorrow but plan to hit the uploads hard next week as part of a new project so hope to have much to report then...
Gotta agree that it needs to be a level playing field... Unless there is an issue with 65 x 26... Granted those are fairly normal numbers for ptp wireless but better than anything else available in this market that isn't fiber. Seems to me that scaling is the issue... Along with the costs of build out. As far as my link, color me happy thus far.
65 Mbps by 26Mbps... not bad...
FYI, we switched back to our cable feed mid afternoon today because of a few small connectivity issues with The wireless link. To be fair, Val kept in touch and let me know that because if high winds (and they were indeed high here today) they didn't have the opportunity to adjust the transmitter that they intended to. He claims to have a new fiber feed to Table Rock which should increase speed along with proper tuning. He promised to update tomorrow...
That is my end of day report. More news as it breaks.
Just an FYI... Connection is up and down currently but it might be because of work being done. Speeds are at about 25Mbps Up x 10 Mbps down... I will update this afternoon.
Can't wait to see the posts driven by this... in the past several months i have challenged Val to show me that he has any modicum of service available and I promised to report my findings. Val approached me at a recent event I was sponsoring and agreed to prove to me that he had a viable, deliverable product. We spoke further last week and then met on the top floor of a garage downtown where how showed a semi-portable wireless receiver with a connection being sent from the Federal Way building where the company has its address listed.
We agreed on Friday that he would connect my office to a wireless link. He showed up today with premise equipment which he and an assistant installed on the roof of my building. It has line of sight to Table Rock and is providing medium high broadband speed (38 - 50 Mbps up x 30 Mbps down). While this is not the super fast pipe promised, Val promised to adjust the line of sight and boost service tomorrow morning.
This in my mind is a good first step to proving that there is a core in place to provide some type of Internet service to the Boise Valley. I have not seen evidence of next generation equipment or super fast connectivity yet but I do have a solution which holds promise for my needs. That said, we still have not had conversations about commercial agreements yet...
So yes, MDGC can provide wireless Internet services to Boise. How advanced is their offering? I will hold my final assessment until they have had a chance to tweak the connection and I have used the connection over a longer period. Either way, I still remain suspect about the financial viability of the company but I am not an investor, just a potential customer. Will I cut my high speed cable link? Not yet, but suffice to say the uplink speed I had tonight is significantly faster than my current connection ( although a bit slower than the speed I was quoted by a fiber provider)... And I have not had a chance to gauge reliability or customer service yet, so I will not comment until I have given it a couple of weeks...
Anyway, there you have it... Let the hype machine start its engines... I will sit on the sidelines and laugh at the comments for the next few days but will report my experience back when and where there is something to report. More news when it happens...
The breakout group that Val was part of was one of 2 teams (out of 4) to win a copy of a book that was the basis for my presentation. You can also buy the book on Amazon for about $15.
It humors me how out of proportion comments on this site get. No one won a Nobel Prize at my meeting... Val also got free pizza... But so did all in attendance.
None of the attendees were held in close and/or public scrutiny at this event. If you read the initial invite (or saw the slide presentation I gave) you would have seen that the group is "all inclusive". Anyone can attend or participate. This was not a vetting session and there were no endorsements or indictments arising from it. It was a launch meeting for a community effort. That is all.
I normally would not speak specifically about someone who attended an event which I put on as I think anonymity is critical in getting the type of collaboration and contribution that I am aiming for. That said, I believe Val would be okay with the following based on our conversation yesterday.
Val and an associate were in attendance. They were respectful and participated in and contributed to the group exercise with enthusiasm. Val did not make any form of presentation to the group, he simply was part of one of the 5 mini groups who participated in a brainstorming session.
I spent a few minutes speaking with Val toward the end of the event, and he again committed to showing me a solution for the project I have at hand. I mentioned that today was fairly booked but that I am available next week. He agreed to be in contact.
Did I read that right? Cash at end of period (2012) of $55? My high school aged son has more money than that in his sock drawer... I have a concern that if Val were to try to respond to my RFP he might run out of toner in his printer and have to hand write the rest... Still, I am happy to meet to go over the details in hopes that the company's bleeding edge technology outshines the company's economic status...
Say it ain't so...
Val is attending! He has registered for the startupboise.com event. I hope this means he will come prepared to discuss his business as all of the entrepreneurs I know will be happy to discuss their offerings in detail. Looks like he is interested in sponsoring the group as well... Can't wait to discuss further. Just left a message on his phone number below...
No concerns there!
They would however require FCC certification on any new hardware manufactured to provide this technically advanced offering. All hardware which emits radio frequency requires such FCC certification. Hard to discern what they really need to comply since this is all double handshake top secret stuff...
I am hoping to have Val take me up on the meeting so I can learn more about what protocols, frequencies and hardware their service utilizes. I have been on vacation so I have not kept up as much with the activities on this board since my offer. I do notice however that several posts were deleted. Has there been a response to my post?
On another note, I have not seen a registration by Val for the kickoff event. Since I don't have the pleasure of knowing Rockshox2's real name I can't tell if he has registered (nor do I know if he was serious)...
Gosh I hope I get to see the technology.
Putting on my D’Artagnan IV's for the dance...
Enough of the sand box fighting. Val and Rockshox2, please come to the Startupboise.com launch. As I am sure you already know, it is a group which I founded... But you already read about that in the Idaho Business Review. Was it the edition when I was on the cover or one of the two since then in which there were stories about one of my companies or the entrepreneur led initiatives I am leading in Boise... Or the Global Angel Group chapter I am president of? Yes, you know. Who I am. And you apparently can use LinkedIn... This is the first proof I have seen of your technical savvy! Funny, I am able to run multiple businesses and launch new bleeding edge technologies all without being stealth and secretive about my business offerings and locations...
Anyway, the project is not at my offices on 6th or 16th... It is another building entirely. As I said, approximately 40 residential units, 90,000 sq. feet of office (assume 15 - 25 businesses of 5 - 20 employees) with needs of 100 Mbps up and down with 5 9's SLA. I have extensive RFP documentation. If you want to meet with me to review. We can even go tour the site if you can offer even a scintilla of proof as to the technology you can provide...
For your purposes however, all I require is a single run to the main comms room which is pretty straight forward. I have plenty of roof space for on premise receivers. Lets set a meeting to review your technology. I am in Redmond Wa tonight but back late tomorrow and all next week for the Startupboise launch. We can meet at my 6th St. Offices since you appear to know the address or we can meet before or after the launch event at BSU but you need to register soon as the room accommodates 75 a 80 people and we already have that many registered but expect a few no shows... Just go to www.startupboise.com to register... And please use your real names so I can be sure to know you are coming.
Let's dance!
Pat
Offer proffered.... Then countered... Awaiting reply. That is how business is done. If he has a legit business I would expect a reply.
I am happy to drop an RFP in person at a location which can somehow substantiate the existence of MediaG3 and their offering. Any office or warehouse with their equipment and a technician or two will suffice.
I have already met with two telecom providers, 1 fiber provider and a security company, all on their turf, and had a walk through their warehouse and/or Network Operating Centers (NOC's). They were all happy to oblige. Any respectable, valid business would see this as standard protocol.
They all provided a breakdown of service offerings and an SLA template. They have also offered to provide references, which will be named in the response to RFP.
Ready to meet you Val. Just name the place.
What are all of these rumblings of which you speak? I have heard nothing but conjecture on this board...
Val texted me asking for details with which I am not willing to confirm until I have a bit more proof of his ability to provide a service. TO date I have met with two different providers, both of whom have sent representatives with actual product literature and an ability to discuss their offerings in full. In both cases, I was able to contact them via a phone number which is well advertised and well staffed.
I am open to attempting to get service from Val but not in a cloak and dagger fashion. My response to Val's text was:
"Val, as you know I am skeptical about your ability to deliver this service. The location is downtown and the top of the building has line of site to nearly anywhere you might put a radio dish. If you are sincere, I would need to know a lot more about the technology. We would require a minimum of 50 by 50 but could use 100 Mbps down (or more if available). I'm providing Internet, Voice and TV services to approximately 40 residential units and 90,000 sq ft of office space. I will give you more details once I have a full description of your technology."
So the ball is in his court. Let's meet somewhere that you can show me the technology Val. Send me some literature or have a sales rep call me (you have my number, it's the same one you texted).
I want some of whatever he is smoking...
Most playwrites dabble in fantasy... a subject well know to readers of MDGC PR's...
Wow, it must be slow around here when I am the subject of the board and I didn't even make a post yesterday. In fact, Monday I only mentioned in reply to a post that I am available to look at MDGC's technology after it was posted that I hadn't taken a poster up on their previous offer to provide proof of the technology or service.
Anyone who has read my posts knows that I am willing to objectively look at the offering. In fact I have an RFP which is about to go out to area businesses to provide amongst other things high speed internet to a combined apartment and office complex. The type of service which is promoted by MDGC is exactly what I am interested in. Its just that I can never seem to get any proof of the offering... I am happy to meet Val or any of his associates at an agreed upon location at an agreed upon time. Darla's Deli comes to mind... Or the Mayors office building...
Anyway, sorry I missed the deleted posts. It sounds like there was much ado about me. Not sure how comforting that is but I suppose that's what I get for being a critic... which I remain until proven unjustified...
Let's do it. When and where?
Nuf,
Can you point us to any real info which can help with the DD... Don't just say that they are paid up in Delaware and Idaho... Tell us where they have installed base and towers and what hardware they use and what protocols and how we can get the service or talk to a user or talk to management (shouldn't they want to help DD go well?)?
Any concrete DD would be nice. As an angel investor I lead DD teams in investment decisions. This company would never even be able to get simple angel money based on a lack of evidence that they even exist...
Show us the details!
