Red Sox win sixth in seven tries,
5-3. Who got the last out? Yep, Wily Mo Pena.
Congrats Susie,
Wily Mo Pena came in for Trot Nixon (slightly strained groin) and had a ball hit off the top of his glove into the bullpen to give up a two run homer.
Red Sox still up 5-3, bottom of the eighth.
PS-he did catch two more balls to him in the inning to get a big razzberry cheer.
Thanks to Jeter, Mo
will probably be in after all.
Susie,
You are one of my favorit cartoon characters. I think you are cute!
As far as the Yankees, I also enjoy Blue Jay problems and Oriole problems. They just don't have any posters. LOL
Bull,
Between Yankee Bats and their middle relief "enter sandman" may not be heard this year in the bronx. They may just have to concede the song to Wagner after all.
Suprise Slugger of the Year
Bronson Arroyo, Reds pitcher. Two games, two homer HIT!
Today,
would be a good day to give Giambi a blood test. Just sayin.
It would be if it weren't the Orioles. LOL
Susie,
Playing someone other than playoff potential teams would help too.
Susie,
They actually remind me of old Red Sox teams. Having aging, big name guys while having a mediocre pitching staff.
Some days you win big, some days you make big comebacks, but you don't win consistantly enough to take the cheese.
I find it encouraging to see the Red Sox win two road games this week by a 2-1 score.
That is nothing like the old Red Sox teams.
Lang,
Exactly. The fun of baseball is the arguments over statistics, which is exactly why the steroid controvery is so bad. Baseball is something you can compare players of differing eras and argue who was the best, even with the minor things like pitching mound changes, spitballs, etc.
I guess that is gone now or at least the 1985-2005 era.
Right,
Big Papi. :o)
He is 0-4 tonight and grounded into 2 double plays though. :(
Ron,
Come join us at our new folding board at Atomic Bob's!
The announcer was Gary Thorne. He is primarily a hockey announcer so he probably feels pretty safe in blasting baseball. He tends to be outspoken and is one of my favorite announcers.
Bill,
Maybe they just screwed up?!??
Bill,
The scorer must of revised his decision. They are right, you don't assume the double play, therefore no error.
Questions???????
Shilling:
117 pitches, 85 strikes, two runs check
Lowell:
Home Run check
A-Gon:
two hits check
Nixon verses lefties:
one for one check
Crisp:
Spectacular catch, 2 runs scored check
Foulke:
not so good, was hit hard ??????
Sox win 7-3
sskillz,
I am a Red Sox fan. I think the Mets have a shot, but like the Sox vs the Yankees, they have to beat the Braves out before they can be considered the favorite.
I wish you and your team the best and wouldn't mind facing Pedro in the World Series. ;0)
Both Eastern Divisions should be wide open.
Wily Mo Pena
An interesting critique of his possibilities:
http://baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=4913
sskillz,
I would worry a lot about Pedro. Even if his toe heals I would be concerned about what adjustments he is makeing will do to his Labrum.
I don't see him finishing out his contract, at all.
I do think Delgado, Wright and Beltran should all have great years though.
I could see them anywhere from first to fourth.
RE: George Mitchell
While I hated him as a Senator, I don't see his position with the Red Sox as being his biggest drawback. I am more concerned with his position with Disney. ABC/ESPN is pumping big dollars into baseball and his position with Disney is definately a conflict of interest.
I will see what he does before passing judgement, but they certainly could of picked someone totally outside of the game and it's financial supporters.
Thank you. EOM
Jarsh,
Steroids have been banned in MLB since 1991 (by Vincent) the bash brothers were cranking in the late 80's so Junior had plenty of time if he was on them.
Also, Steroids cause a lot of injuries, they don't always heal them.
BTW, Griffey doesn't look small to me. He isn't ripped like some of the muscle builders.
The pitching injuries, all the hammies, tendon damage, rotator cuffs, ligiment damage...they all smell of steroids to me. Pitchers can't go anywhere near the distance they used to and don't throw any faster. I think a lot of guys bought into fool's gold.
It doesn't suprise me that Kirby Puckett died so young either, I think a lot of others will do the same unfortunately.
Red Sox claim Hee Sop Choy on waivers,
the Red Sox keep getting younger this off-season. I'm kinda suprised the Reds or Orioles didn't claim him.
Win,
Thanks, I am optimistic about the team. Most of my observations have come from a scant few TV games and the statistics on the spring.
The pitching most likely will be fine, it is just hard to judge at this point in time. Any rough innings will really bloat the ERA in such a small sample. It is also tough to judge the hitting for basically the same reason.
I think as the starters all begin to play together the team will do better. I believe the sum is a lot better than the individual parts we have seen displayed to this point.
One good thing is that no one in the division has had a very good spring either.
Jarsh,
That is one of the reasons I suspect Bonds, Griffey and Boone. They have a lot to live up to and I would think that could drive them over the edge to try to cheat.
re: Bonds
He will if Bonds testifies in this "hearing" and disputes any of his grand jury testimony.
I think he will stay far away, he is just trying to override first amendment rights of the publisher and scare the local media with his threats.
Sheffiels arrogance "it is what it is" and Giambi's thinking that he is off the hook for the "unknown apology" is pretty funny too.
Susie,
He had a very good year in 2004 and led the team in quality starts last year, but he did get lit up a few times when dominated by southpaw lineups.
I liked him and would of preferred to see Wells go, but Arroyo's contract for performance ratio was just to attractive to smaller market teams.
I wish him well. He will have more opportunity in Cincinnati.
Bonds to provide more entertainment
This could really get juicy, I think he is stupid to stir this mess further.

My take on Boston's Spring training:
The good:
If Loretta and Crisp can continue to hit the way they have this spring, Papi and Manny will each have 160 rbi's. They have really been getting on base.
Hansen has pitched great when given the opportunity, not giving up an earned run. He will go to Pawtucket to start the season though.
Stern, who did a great job for Canada in the WBC has done the same for Boston, if the Red Sox hadn't traded for WMP they would have a tough decision on whether to keep him around or send him to Pawtucket once he completes his rule V time.
Manny Delcarmen, Lenny Dinardo and Cla Merideth have all done well and will see time with the parent club from time to time. Very encouraging to see all the young arms in the farm system.
Pawtucket would be a AAAA team this year if there was such a thing. They will be loaded and a good omen for the parent team over the next few years.
Adding all the young position guys, Crisp and Pena specifically which should make for a good young core with all the young pitchers and Dustin Pedroia.
The Bad:
Lowell has started to come around, but other than Loretta the infield offense has been disappointing so far. I expected Gonzo to not hit, but his average is so low I might be able to match it and I haven't played baseball for 37 years! Youks has been poor, Snow has been ok but they need to pick it up if we are to make a season of it.
Disappointment a bit in Papelbon and especially Lester's spring. Maybe they are trying to hard, but Lester isn't quite as ready for the majors as the hype has made him. Papelbon hasn't thrown a lot of innings so it might be unfair, but he hasn't quite met expectations yet either and will start in the bullpen, taking Arroyo's long reliever spot unless Foulke can't go, in which case he may be the closer.
The relief corp hasn't done much. Seanez and Riske have been knocked around. Edgar Martinez, another Pawsox star in the making has done well.
Still unknown:
The starters. They have pitched very little against major leaguers as Nipper has kept them mostly pitching in minor league games. Wells did ok for three innings in his first start but tired and got bombed in the fourth.
Beckett and Schilling haven't impressed yet, but we will see how they respond when we go to Texas. Clement couldn't get a clean inning today against the Twins.
Wily Mo Pena, will he be Dave Kingman or Willy Mays? He is a raw product but did show a lot of improvement in his pitch selection during winter ball in the Dominican. He has done well in his two games so far and even made a nice catch at the wall. He should make a good platoon partner with Trot and spell Coco and Manny at times. Let's see if he can learn from Manny, Papi and Papa Jack on how to pick his game up. We are already calling him "Little Papi".
Conclusion,
The team has performed below expectations as their sorry won-loss record indicates. The infielders need to start hitting and the pitching needs to be much better. Overall a disappointment to this point. They are going to need to step it up. Hopefully they have been saving the wins for when it counts.
Susie,
No that is a media conflaguration. Arroyo wanted to stay in Boston and signed through his arbitration years gaining some job security. Unfortunately, it also set his price which actually makes it easier to trade him.
It is hard to know if he made the correct decision financially. His numbers dropped a bit last year and he was destined for Bostons bullpen, so he probably would of made LESS as a bullpen guy next year in arbitration.
If he was a starter for the three years and improved, he might of made a couple million more over the three years, but it certainly wasn't guaranteed.
I agree with those players
who feel that spring training for those who will be playing begin in February. Here in Florida it is usually plenty warm enough to start training then.
Weather in Florida in February is at least equal to or better than April in most parts of the country, especially South Florida.
So?
Kick Sheffield and Giambi out too. Maybe the Yankees would turn a profit.
Myst,
I haven't seen a link to correct the what if, does that mean you are back to the drawing board or that you haven't had a chance to post it yet?
Thanks!
Red Sox trade Arroyo for Wily Mo Pena,
Creates a great platoon (or replacement for Nixon).
Red Sox Sign Juan Gone to ML contract,
looking for a platoon partner for Trot Nixon.

PegnVa,
The Yankees did not lose the World Series in 2004. The Cards did to the RED SOX.
My son says that steroids in high schools today are rampant
and unfortunately he know the drug trade. :(
Mexico wins 2-1,
Japan gets the nod, which they should of had all along. The officiating has been horrible and sends a terrible message to the other countries. I certainly hope they have international umpires in the next classic or it will lose credibility.
Agreed,
I have my own suspicions about Junior.
Birds of a feather.....
