My condolances to the Lidle family,
and the Yankee organization. A most tragic event. I was shocked to learn the plane was being piloted by a Yankee player. I had seen the accident scene on CNBC while trading stocks.
My first thought after his child and wife was Thurman. Another tragic event in Yankee history.
Congratulations Peg,
and all other Yankee fans. You had the better team and I acknowlege that. I wish you the best in the postseason. The Yankees overcame a lot of adversity and despite the advantages that the team had I can not but congratulate the team for their efforts and for not giving up despite the trials they faced.
Hopefully the Red Sox will overtake them next year, but for this season the Yankees deserve their playoff position.
Hey we have something in common afterall,
GO Gators!
Let's go Mountaineers!
According to Boston stations,
Wells locker has been cleared and final offers are being formulated by the Padres and Dodgers for his services.
Good luck Boomer!
PS- Now I can officially concentrate on college football for the first time in three years for the whole season. West Virginia and Florida are my two favorites and are highly regarded in the preseason polls.
More horrible news:
It just keeps getting worse and worse. Not only are the Sox dealing with injuries, but life threatening situations. First there was the Papi news and now Jon Lester is being tested for cancer. What a horrible, horrible nightmare this season is becoming.

Red Sox fall for fifth straight game
2-1 to Oakland. The offense has become non-existant without Manny Ortiz.
DD,
I have been afraid ever since Wakefield went down. That one event really destroyed the pitching staff, IMHO. All of the other injuries have just been piling on.
Just when you think it can't get any worse, this happens:

I wish Papi and all of the "walking wounded" the best.
Red Sox take series @ LAA
Papelbon gets the save, Josh Beckett the win. David Ortiz hit another dinger to give Boston the 1-0 lead and Wily Mo Pena threw a runner out at the plate on a nice deak job by 'Belli to pull the Red Sox within five and a half games of the Yankees.
Loretta and Manny to sit again,
the injuries continue although an MRI on Manny's knee came back negative, it is diagnosed at Patella tendonitis. Loretta is nursing a sore quad.
Angels take first game against Bosox
Youk flies out to warning track with two on as Sox lose again, failing to take advantage of losses by Chicago and Minny.
Hammy keeps Manny out of BoSox-Angels opener
ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Boston Red Sox slugger Manny Ramirez was not in the starting lineup Tuesday night against the Los Angeles Angels because of a cramp in his right hamstring.
Ramirez, who took himself out of Monday's 2-1 loss to the Yankees in the fifth inning, is hitting .330 with 34 homers and 100 RBI. Willy Mo Pena started in place of the 10-time All-Star, who leads the AL with a .446 on-base percentage and was retired only once in 23 plate appearances during the Yankees series.
Still smarting from their five-game sweep at the hands of their archrivals at Fenway Park during the weekend, the Red Sox placed shortstop Alex Gonzalez on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained oblique muscle in his right side. The move is retroactive to Aug. 19.
Middle infielder Dustin Pedroia made his big league debut at shortstop after his contract was purchased from Triple-A Pawtucket. He was in Ottawa with the Paw Sox when he got the word of his promotion and made a connecting flight from Chicago to Anaheim in time for the opener of a nine-game road trip.
Left-handed reliever Javier Lopez was optioned to Pawtucket, switching places with right-hander Jason Gabbard.

Peg,
No, five games don't make a season. But, to have a chance at the playoffs trying to catch both Chicago and Minn./or the Yankees they will need a hot streak like they had late in 2004 or like they had earlier with the NL teams.
They are a dangerous team, but after what I have seen the past month I am not to sure they are playoff caliber either.
I guess we will see what happens when Tek and Wakefield come back, they are the key to the team right now.
Your welcome,
I can't PM, but I don't see any mystery here. They lost 5 of 6 to the Royals and Devil Rays and two of three to Detroit before this.
The injuries to Clement, Foulke and Wells were huge as it created the need to use all the kids who should of been in AAA (except Papelbon). They are not used to these type of innings and certainly are not used to this kind of pressure.
It will be interesting to see how they respond, if it sets them back or makes them better. This year was supposed to be a rebuilding year with stopgaps at short, third and second but they played well enough to have a great first half.
Unfortunately Lowell and A-Gon's bats have gone cold, Trot and Tek have been gone and Crisp was lost for half the year. Now Manny and Youks are questionable.
They are only 4-12 in their last sixteen with a trip to the west coast on tap. It is concievable, although unlikely, they could end up only being a .500 team by the time the season is over.
Hopefully they can step it up and overcome all the adversity.
Congrats on the five game sweep
whodathunkit?
Peg, RE:Theo
This is what he is saying, nothing like what you reported from the Yankees:

SSKILLZ,
The only good thing about this doubleheader is that they set a record for contributions to the Jimmy Fund Telethon.
Not only are the Sox in danger of getting swept in the double header but the pitching has been terrible for both teams.
I hate slugfests.
Red Sox take 3 of 5 would be my guess
Kazmir,
Was wild in the strike zone but effective. He seemed to throw a lot of pitches. I suspect he was on a strict pitch count given the fact that it was his second game back from the DL.
Unfortunately, the bullpen was ineffective as Toronto hammered the relievers for four home runs.
Molina missed the cycle by a double.
It was an interesting game to be at, a combination pitchers duel with a slugfest added on in the late innings. I will be going again on Saturday to see them play the Indians.
The trades have killed the Rays batting order. It seemed like everyone besides Crawford and Baldelli were hiting in the two teens for average.
I thought I did,
which is why I included the "linkage" comment. :)
Excel,
Sorry. But if you want linkage, Toronto is playing the D Rays. I am going to the game tomorrow night and another one on Saturday against the Indians.
Sox sign Carlos Pena
By Kelsie Smith, Globe Correspondent
Sources have confirmed that the Red Sox have signed first baseman Carlos Pena, who will report to Pawtucket tomorrow. Pena, a Haverhill native and Northeastern graduate, was the Texas Rangers No. 1 draft pick in 1998 and was Detroit's starting first baseman from 2003-2005.
Most recently Pena was playing for the Columbus Clippers, the Yankees Triple-A club. With Columbus, Pena was hitting .260 with 19 home runs and 66 RBI.
Red Sox acquire Blue Jay
The Red Sox have reportedly acquired Eric Hinske from the Blue Jays in exchange for a prospect.
The Blue Jays agreed to pay $2.8125 million, which is half of the $5.6 million due him next year. The Red Sox will take on the $1.4 million still owed Hinske for this season. According to the report, the Red Sox will play Hinske a couple of times per week in place of Kevin Youkilis and Mike Lowell. Some time in right field is also a possibility, but since he's not a very good defender, he shouldn't see much time there while Wily Mo Pena is hot. It's doubtful that the Red Sox will ever want to put Pena in center and Hinske in right. Aug. 16 - 11:45 pm et

Red Sox win final game of the series
6-4 behind their two "closers"
Pap-elbon and Pap-the-bomb. Ortiz gets his 42 homer. Papelbon looked a lot better after getting some rest.
Tigers 3 Red Sox 2
Detroit scores the go ahead run in the top of the ninth of a good game to win it. Papi tied it at two in the bottom of the eighth but it wasn't enough as Todd Jones gets his second save of the series.
Red Sox beat Orioles 9-7
Mike Lowell handles a hot shot with bases loaded and throws to Youk to get the final out. The O's scored two in the ninth to make it interesting. Red Sox pull within a game of the Yankees.
It would sure be a good time
for it to happen. Detroit seems to be starting to fall off a bit and it is always a good time to kick the Yankees butts. LOL
Manny hits walkoff, extends streak to 27
Man, the Red Sox would be about 50 games out if not for the Orioles and the NL.
Red Sox win, Yankees fall
Red Sox pull within two again as they stop a five game losing streak, their longest since 2004.
Wells made his third start giving up only one run in seven innings. The Sox sorely need those kind of innings to rest a bullpen that has looked haggard the past week or two.
Manny extends hitting streak to 26 games
with a line drive, RBI single off a line shot that Tejada had come out of his glove after jumping for it.
Flash:Mike Lowell just beaned in the head, fortunately he remains in the game.
Thanks Peg,
any idea of how long he or Giambi may be out?
I would think one of two reasons:
1) He saw that his batting average was at like .185 and figured the guy couldn't hit
or
2) He saw the C on his chest and mistook him for Varitek and figured he couldn't hit.
The bullpen is really worn down with all these 5-6 inning efforts by our starters, they really need to start going at least 7 innings or the team is toast for this year.
Red Sox lose fourth in a row,
Papelbon blows second straight save by giving up a leadoff triple and a sac fly and then goes on to lose.
Red Sox fall three behind New York and one behind Chicago in the Wild Card hunt.
Peg,
What happened to him? My wife will be crushed!
Manny extends hit streak to 24
with a first inning Home Run.
2-0 Boston.
Red Sox fall again, 6-4
in Kansas City. Ortiz hit a bomb to CF in the seventh to pull within one and walked in the ninth but Manny struck out and Youk ground out to third as the Sox continued to slide. They are 6-10 in there last 16 games and are one game under .500 since the all star game.
The Rays,
Have the "Ray Team", they could of done a lot better than they did with it.
mat,
nope, i have followed the Red Sox since 1963 when I was six years old.
Ortiz hit another home run today for 40, three straight years in a row. It wasn't enough as the Devil Rays came back and won the game.
It was a long drive back to Ocala. :(
Excel,
No the "punishment" is being unfairly restricted to the three posts per day. I have that whole bunch except for Steeler Fan on ignore to try to keep peace.
The situation that came up was at Atomic Bob's where HHL AKA 26 times... came to my baseball board posting as vicocalaisanidiot.
Now how would YOU handle these people?
Excel,
What is the problem now? Just because I gave everyone a heads up on what one of the Yankee posters is doing? I would consider someone who is stalking others to be a legit concern for everyone.
I see no reason why I am being punished when others came here looking to start a problem. Why Susie would be involved I have no idea. This is what I meant the other day when I stated that Yankee fans here are just into stifling discussion.
I haven't even hardly posted commentary lately, mostly just results and news. I really don't get what is going on here.
Ortiz has game winning home run,
and two in the game. I guess he is a lock for MVP. If not him, then it should be Papelbon. :)
