I would think one of two reasons:

1) He saw that his batting average was at like .185 and figured the guy couldn't hit

or

2) He saw the C on his chest and mistook him for Varitek and figured he couldn't hit.

The bullpen is really worn down with all these 5-6 inning efforts by our starters, they really need to start going at least 7 innings or the team is toast for this year.
