GameStop Reports Record Holiday Sales
Thursday January 10, 8:29 am ET
Total Sales Increase 35% Over Previous Year
Holiday Same Store Sales Increase 20%
Fiscal 2007 Earnings Guidance Raised by $0.13 per share
GRAPEVINE, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--GameStop Corp. (NYSE: GME - News), the world’s largest video game and entertainment software retailer, today reported sales results for the nine-week holiday period ending January 5, 2008.
Total sales for the 2007 holiday period were $2,334.4 million, a 34.7% increase from the prior year holiday period of $1,732.8 million. Comparable store sales for the holiday period increased 20.0%.
R. Richard Fontaine, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, commented, “Driven by robust domestic and international sales, GameStop achieved the most successful holiday season results ever. Video game software sales grew by 45%, while the next generation installed base is now triple last year’s base and a very positive leading indicator for future sales growth.”
The top five video games sold during the holiday period were Activision’s GUITAR HERO III and CALL OF DUTY 4: MODERN WARFARE, ASSASSIN’S CREED by Ubisoft, Electronic Art’s ROCK BAND and Nintendo’s SUPER MARIO GALAXY.
Fontaine also stated that he “was particularly pleased with record holiday handheld sell-outs of the Nintendo DS and the Sony PSP. The Nintendo Wii, even in the face of on-going seasonal shortages, Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Sony’s PlayStation 3, proved to be on many holiday wishlists as new console sales were very strong.
“Video gaming is redefining itself and attracting more players than ever as demonstrated by the growing number of Wii parties and Guitar Hero fests held not only at home, but also on college campuses, cruise ships and any place people are having fun.”
Updated Guidance
Based on sales trends to date, GameStop is increasing its fourth quarter 2007 comparable store sales guidance from a range of 7.0% to 9.0%, to be in a range of 15.5% to 16.5%. Full year comparable store sales are now expected to be in a range of 23.5% to 24.5%.
In addition, GameStop is also increasing its fourth quarter diluted earnings per share guidance to be in a range of $1.09 to $1.10. Full year earnings per diluted share guidance is now forecast to be in a range of $1.75 to $1.76, which is $0.13 per share higher than guidance issued on November 20, 2007.

November Video Game Sales Soar
Thursday December 13, 6:44 pm ET
Video Game Sales Soar in November, Led by Nintendo, Activision
NEW YORK (AP) -- U.S. video game sales soared 52 percent to hit $2.63 billion in November, according to market researcher NPD Group, as shoppers snapped up millions of consoles and video games in the busy holiday season.
Hardware sales jumped 41 percent to $1.1 billion from $772 million a year earlier, and software sales rose 62 percent to $1.3 billion from $804 million.
Nintendo was the clear winner among console makers, with its portable DS selling 1.53 million units. The Wii, which has been plagued by shortages, still sold 981,000 units.
Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360 sold 770,000 units in November, and Sony Corp.'s PlayStation 3, 466,000. It was still outsold by its predecessor, the PS2, at 496,000 units.
Activision Inc.'s "Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare" for the Xbox 360 was the month's top-selling game with 1.57 million units, followed by "Super Mario Galaxy" for the Wii, from Nintendo, with 1.12 million. Ubisoft's "Assasin's Creed" for the Xbox 360 followed with 980,000 units sold.
November and December are the video game industry's most crucial months, as companies make most of their money during the holidays.
But the picture has changed dramatically. MCZ is a new company and much bigger now. Margins are growing while the stocks valuation is simply to low.
Corning Inc.'s (GLW, $24.92, $0.52, 2.13%) board approved a five-year, $795 million capital-expenditure plan to find a Japanese glass manufacturing plant and to enable the company to be the primary TFT-grade Gen 10 substrate supplier to Sharp Corp. (SHCAY). The specialty glass and ceramics company expects total 2008 capital expenditures of $1.5 billion to $1.7 billion, including the Gen 10 facility. The Gen 10 investment will begin with an initial capital expenditure of $400 million in 2008, the company said. Corning plans to begin mass producing liquid crystal display panels for large televisions at the plant by March 2010.
Finisar Corp.'s (FNSR, $1.60, -$0.03, -1.84%) fiscal second-quarter loss narrowed to $9.77 million, or 3 cents a share, from $30.3 million, or 10 cents a share, a year earlier. The data communications equipment company said revenue fell 6.9% to $100.7 million from $108.2 million a year ago. Analysts expected revenue of $104 million.
Standard & Poor's said video-game retailer GameStop Corp. (GME, $57.90, $0.69, 1.21%) will replace Dow Jones & Co. (DJ, $59.89, $0.06, 0.10%) in the S&P 500 Index. S&P is making the change with the pending final approval of Dow Jones' acquisition by News Corp. (NWS, $21.19, $0.09, 0.43%). Dow Jones is the parent company of MarketWatch, The Wall Street Journal, Barron's and Dow Jones Newswires.
G-III Apparel Group Ltd.'s (GIII, $14.86, $1.02, 7.37%) third-quarter earnings rose to $23.8 million from $23.3 million a year ago. On a per share basis, earnings fell to $1.41 from $1.59 with more shares outstanding than in the prior-year period. For the quarter ended Oct. 31, sales rose 11% to $271.2 million from $244.7 million a year earlier. Analysts expected earnings of $1.39 a share on revenue of $279 million. The outerwear and sportswear maker said it expects fiscal 2008 earnings of 98 cents to $1.03 a share on sales of $510 million. Wall Street, on average, expects fiscal 2008 earnings of $1.03 a share on revenue of $511 million.
General Dynamics Corp. (GD, $92.43, $2.57, 2.86%) said it has authorized the repurchase of up to 10 million, or 2.5%, of the company's 402 million shares outstanding, with purchases to be made "at management's discretion."
Greif Inc. (GEF, $56.27, $1.20, 2.18%) said its fourth-quarter profit rose to $55 million from $41.7 million in the year-ago period. The company said earnings for the company's Class A stock rose to 93 cents a share from 71 cents a share last year. Using the company's Class B shares, per-share net income rose to $1.42 from $1.08. Analysts had estimated a profit of 97 cents a share. Revenue rose to $882.3 million from $735.6 million from last year. The company forecast fiscal 2008 earnings of $3.80 to $4 a share for the Class A common stock.
Hot Topic Inc. (HOTT, $6.17, $0.03, 0.49%) said November sales at stores open at least one year fell 8.3% from a year earlier. Analysts estimated same-store sales to drop 6.7%. Sales in November totaled $56.2 million, up 1.3% from a year earlier, said the specialty retailer.
NovaStar Financial (NFI, $2.48, $0.40, 19.23%) said it got another waiver on financing from Wachovia Corp. until Dec. 7. The bank agreed on Nov. 30 not to enforce a covenant that requires NovaStar to maintain a certain adjusted tangible net worth. NovaStar had breached that covenant as of Sept. 30, but got a waiver from Wachovia until Nov. 30. The new agreement, disclosed in a regulatory filing late Wednesday, extends that waiver until Friday.
I'm in no hurry Connie. The next earnings report will be a blow out and so will the following quarters. MCZ valuation is flashing a screaming buy. Insider buying also.
Buy the dips because $2 will be here before you know it.
Thanks, holding strong.
