Been having problems on my old XP rig for a while now (slow) -- been using 100% of CPU but can't seem to put my finger on the cause (conflicts??). Won't allow restore, won't download any programs or updates, wiped out my favorites in Firefox and now slowed to a snail's pace. I'm probably infected with something but none of my scans can find anything. Ran PCPitstop, nothing! I believe I shall have to wipe the HD this weekend and start all over. I am thoroughly disgusted but not ready to go buy a new rig just yet!
Flo, any suggestions as to best scanning software to use after my clean install, best antivirus program to monitor my system (using Avast)? Any other suggestions (no, I'm not going to Win10, LOL)?
TIA
Newly
Great, that is my issue, too. My trading platform only runs on Windows.
Newly
I'm waiting to see how Win10 is received before I make that decision, but I am leaning towards a MAC. The biggest hurdle for me is all the years I have spent learning how to deal with Windows problems working in the background. I don't want to have to start that all over with a MAC, but I understand MACs have far fewer problems than Windows so maybe my concern is misplaced.
Newly
I suppose some would want to run Windows on a MAC because there are some windows programs that cannot be run on MAC software (like my trading platform unless they have updated it recently). I know at one point Apple put out a system with a 'virtual' Windows OS on it as well as their own OS, but it was slow and not a tremendous success. It is my understanding one can easily set up a dual-boot system on a MAC and run both the native OS and Windows. That would allow people like me to buy and enjoy a MAC while still running some Windows programs. I suspect with the spy-like nature of Win10, I am not the only one currently considering a switch to a MAC, and would expect Apple to benefit from the increasing disenchantment with Windows.

Great minds think alike, LOL.

PS We've all been there, done that!
LOL. Nor does the trader have to admit they made a mistake, which IMO is, unfortunately, the stronger motivation for holding a losing position. Human nature is strange, isn't it -- we'd rather lose money than lose face!
Newly
Don't feel bad, George, we've all had to wrestle with that one. It is the single biggest hurdle to profitability for most traders! Bottomline, one either learns to overcome it eventually or one is doomed to failure as a trader.

So good to hear from you, Bruce. You sound just wonderful despite everything you've been through. We have all been sending our prayers your way and while we realize your battle is far from over, we are all pulling for your complete recovery. As to designing new computers, I think many, like me, are following your example and simply moving to laptops as our primary machines in conjunction with docking stations. I so enjoyed building my Linus to your specs, and it is still humming along though getting a bit long in the tooth, and maxed out as far as upgrades go.
You keep hanging tough, Bruce, and we will keep sending our prayers your way. We all miss ya.
Newly
Hey, thanks for the link. I didn't realize he was still around, it has been years. . .
Newly
Yes, I noticed that last time, too. Used to have to go in and manually delete the older version.
Newly
Yes, I'm constantly fooling with Services as well. Amazing how many things running in the background one can disable and take the load off the CPU without disrupting your computing. Years ago there was a guy named Black Viper that published a list of what you could disable and what was essential. Don't know if he is still around or not. I don't think I have much running on Auto anymore, mostly Disabled and Manual.
Newly
High CPU usage is often due to conflicts between various programs. Java is one I've experienced. Antivirus programs conflict with each other, thus only one can be run at a time. Flash Player is another program which I recently experienced problems with and deleted from my system.
Have you recently changed anything that would have resulted in resolving such a conflict and thus lowering your CPU usage?
Newly
I've often experienced a slowdown on my computer due to Java. One cannot run two different versions of Java without experiencing conflicts, so each time a new version is downloaded the older version(s) must be deleted from the system. This resolves the conflict that causes the additional CPU usage and slows down everything. Don't know if this answers your question as I'm not clear as to what you question actually is. . .

Can you possibly partition your HD and put Win7 on the other side of that partition?

Not many Forex traders on iHub! Glad to hear you're doing well. I'm still in California at the moment, but looking to move to Oregon in the spring if I can find the right place. I go up there twice a year hiking, and just love it, so. . .
Good to hear from you Plugger. Take care of Lee -- don't let HIM break anything, LOL.

Hey, Plugger, how the heck are you? Still trading? Keeping tabs on Lee? I don't post on his thread now but we touch base every now and then. Trust all is well with you and yours. . .
Newly
Yes, I have my doubts about Win10, too. Seems with XP Microsoft produced its best OS and it's been all downhill from there, IMO. Contemplating moving over to an Apple, but hate to have to learn the background stuff all over again for a very different OS, LOL.
Newly
Thanks for recapping Bruce's plight, ciciagt, and I wholeheartedly agree with your suggestion that everyone send a card. Bruce has many 'friends' here on iHub and right now he needs all the psychological support he can get! I've already sent mine. . .

Morning, Kitt. Option Education is a great board for beginning (as well as intermediate) option traders to read from the first message to the last. Extremely good practical information but not a current trading thread. Leemalone is very knowledgeable and IMO the best option trader on iHub, mostly doing spreads. A good trader to give a people mark and to follow.
Leemalone posts mainly on the most active board for options, Option Millionnaires, but the main traders there seem to reserve the good stuff for their private subscription site. I was the moderator of the old Option Traders Co-op board but resigned as Moderator and the board was closed down. The new OpTrCoop is mainly for a small group of super short-term traders who do post their trades, but often not in real-time so hard to follow or confirm.
There really isn't IMO a good general option traders board here for sharing trades and ideas. Why don't you start one?

PS I'm still running XP, but looking to buy a new computer with more than 2GB of RAM!
Yes, it is so sad, but, really, one never knows so sure what will happen, so I keep on believing things will get better despite all the odds.
Newly
For sure I can, but not at that fabulous price!
Newly
PS Check out the latest on Dream Machine -- copy of most recent news from Bruce's wife. . .
Oh, thanks for posting that, Will. This is just so sad to hear, but I still believe miracles do happen, and it is up to God to determine whether Bruce may experience one. We can only accept what is and hope for the best.
Newly
It's tempting, Lee, I mean how can you lose at that price. But unfortunately it only has 2GB of RAM, and that won't work for me because my trading platform alone requires that and more. My Terminator only has 2 GB RAM and that's why I'm looking for a new computer. 2GB isn't enough when the newer programs are so large and RAM intensive.
Newly
Is it this one? Just reduced to $199.99:

Newly
Wow! $249? Great price for an ASUS!
Newly
Glad to hear it, Lee. I guess you have become more hi-tech than heretofore, LOL.
I have been considering an ASUS laptop myself. Which model did you buy? What OS? I hear good things about ASUS. My Terminator has an ASUS motherboard, and seems to work well, no problems in 8 years (at least not with the MB, LOL).
Newly
Looks like an add-on app to me, in which case it is not necessary but may be useful. It is involved with security and protecting your mobile phone if it is misplaced or lost -- it can locate, lock or erase a lost phone and also does auto backups.
On a PC it is used to speed up boot time and surfing and helps prevent program crashes by analyzing your system.
Check out this link, which is pretty detailed on what the app does.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soluto
If it is RAM heavy, I personally wouldn't want it running on a laptop or mobile phone, but that's just me. If it's already on your machine why not stick with it a while and see if it is useful, and if not disable or delete the program.
Hope this helps.
Newly
Another new computer, Lee? You go through computers faster than anyone I've ever known. I'm still using the Terminator I built back in 2007, LOL!
I've heard good things about the ASUS. Is it a laptop? I have the same problem with low sound when playing movies. Don't know what OS your ASUS is running, but if there is a Control Panel or the equivalent you can adjust the sound there. There is also usually a small icon in the tray that you can open to adjust volume. I hesitate to tell you this because I know you are anything but hi-tech and likely won't be able to find either one, and I don't want you to screw up this new computer looking for them and then blame me, LOL. I suggest you call your closest teenager. . .
Newly
I'm still around, Lee, still trading (strictly options now). As a daytrader, not so much time for posting these days, not like the old days on Zeev's. Gosh, that seems so long ago and far away now, doesn't it? Well, time marches on, and if it didn't, if it just stopped in place, we'd all get bored pretty quickly I think, LOL.
Newly
Well, no disrespect meant, Lee, but I'm not sure I want to take advice from someone who screws up his computer so badly every few days he has to call a teenager to come and straighten it out. JK, LOL.
Newly
You know, early, we are all concerned about Bruce, but this must also be a terrible strain on his wife. They haven't been married long, and it must be just awful for her having this happen so soon after they started their life together. She probably already has her hands full caring for Bruce and I guess we shouldn't add to her workload by asking her to post here. We can follow along on FB and know what is happening even if most of us can't express to her our feelings since we aren't members.
Newly
Bon voyage, Shelly. Have a wonderful time.
Newly
Great! Let's see if we hear from her on iHub. If not, we can always keep checking the FB page and copy her posts here.

I'm glad I stumbled upon that link. At least now we have a news source and hopefully if we keep checking in future we will get more news.

I have a Samsung S4 running Android Lollipop. There is something called Backup Assistant Plus (that wasn't on it before it updated to Lollipop) that automatically backs up my phone whenever it feels like it, presumably to some cloud somewhere. I don't want to have my stuff backup up but I can't find anyway to disable this service. Anyone have any ideas?????
