I know how to install a second HD internally. I originally had two HDs in this case set in Raid0. When one HD failed I installed one huge HD and dumped the Raid configuration in the BIOS. I partitioned that HD into 3 separate drives (had two different OS's on it), one for the WinXP OS and various programs (C), one for the Linux OS just for the fun of it (E), and one for special programs and files I needed to protect like photos, docs I originate, etc. (D). When the OS on C got corrupted and I couldn't repair it I reformated E and reloaded WinXP and SP3 there. I can still access some of the programs on C, but some now say "access denied".
My intention is NOT to use the external enclosure to run the system, that will be on the new internal HD, but I want to be able to access all the info on the old HD. Because of the way WinXP distributes various aspects of files into different areas, without the original program setup disc, I cannot reload these programs onto the new HD. That is why I'm wondering if I can run those programs on the old HD which will be in the external enclosure connected to the computer through the USB cable (I don't want to fuss with setting up two internal HDs again although I'll go that route if I have to).
Newly
Good suggestion, thanks, but the problem is deeper than just not being able to download Adobe Reader. I also cannot access my monthly statements on my broker's website (immediately says timed out for inactivity as soon as I try to access it). My Firefox browser takes nearly one minute when it first loads. Various other nonsense. All this indicates to me the problem goes deeper, but despite everything I've tried I cannot discover where the issue lies.
This is a machine I built 9 or 10 years ago to Bruce Thompson's Terminator specs. It originally had 2 internal HDs set in Raid but when one died I switched over to one large HD. I already have an external HD enclosure with a USB connection in which I keep an old, smaller HD to backup files on, so all I'd need to do is take that smaller HD and put it inside the case, reformat, reload WinXP and SP3, and remove the old HD and put it in the enclosure. I wouldn't be using a new HD to improve the performance of the old one, I would be using the new HD for the OS and some programs, and the old HD as a source of other older programs and files. Probably will try it and see what happens. I can always switch them back.

Thanks, been there. I always seem to be swimming against the current, LOL. Not sure I want to drift with the current flow yet. Will wait to see what the future brings. The iOS is a very good choice, too, IMO, I just don't want to have to learn all over again with a new OS how to fix the glitches, though I hear there aren't so many with the iOS as with MSFT's OS's. I think I wouldn't hesitate to go to Apple except my trading platform will not run on anything but MSFT OS. Yes, you can run a dual OS on an iOS machine, so. . .
Newly
Lots of good ideas, thank you. I've had recurring problems on this old, old system for ages now so a Sys.Rest. is out of the question for fixing it.
My current thinking is this, though not sure it would work: remove the current HD and replace with a new one, reload WinXP and SP3 which I put on a CD the last time I had to reload WinXP in case it was no longer available in future -- the last time I had problems with the WinXP on C drive, and couldn't seem to fix it, I finally gave up and simply reloaded WinXP on E drive with SP3 and went on from there leaving the old corrupt version of WinXP on C along with a lot of files I cannot now access.
Anyway, what I'm wondering is this: if I put the old HD into an external enclosure, can I then run the programs on it I want to use without reloading them onto the new internal drive? I'm sure it would be impossible to get legacy versions of some of these programs and the newer versions will not work on my old XP OS, nor can I simply reinstall them on the new drive since I do not have the original downloads (in some cases I have the CDs, but others I simply got off the web). This would be a workaround of sorts since it is inevitable that in future I will need to get a new machine and go either Win10 or iOS, but I want to see how Win10 is evaluated after it has been around for a year or so before deciding.
Anyway, just some thoughts I'm kicking around. . .
Newly
PS I did not remove the old Adobe Reader program(s) before trying to download the newer one (and I realized that might be the problem) because if the new one would not work on my old OS, I couldn't go back to the older version if I uninstalled it.
PSS I already have a lot of files backed up on 32GB thumbs, but those files are useless without the programs to run them. I don't believe files backed up from WinXP would work on an iOS machine, but not sure. . .
I don't think the problem is with Adobe, I think it is something wrong in my system because this is not the only oddity on this machine recently. I cannot download my monthly reports from my brokerage online -- when I try it says it is "timed out due to inactivity". It is all very strange. I don't have any problems on my laptop which also runs XP, so I checked my Services settings against those on my laptop, compared add-ons and extensions in my browsers with those on the laptop, I can't put my finger on where the problem lies. Anyway, thanks for your help. I'm so tired (been at this all day now) if I carry on I will no doubt get fedup enough to just murder my computer and be done with it, so I had better quit now before I reach that point.
Thanks again!
Newly
Yes. Tried both IE and Firefox. Also tried the Direct Download Link. No go. I'm beginning to understand why some people take an ax to their computers, LOL.
Newly
Thanks for all the links, been there done that. Updated my Windows Installer, updated my Adobe Flash, tried various downloads, no go. Still can't find a solution. . . Appreciate your help, but still not working. Interestingly enough, seems many others have had similar problem but can't find a solution. Time for a new computer. I'm getting reallllllllly tired of grappling with all this nasty little glitches on WinXP, won't go to Win10, leaning towards Apple. . .
Newly
Firefox has blocked my old version of Adobe Reader and my computer will not allow me to update to a newer version compatible with WinXP. When I download the installer and click to run, I get the typical windows error window "Adobe Installer has encountered a problem and needs to close. . ." etc. Have tried downloading to a thumb on another computer, same result when I try to run it on this computer.
I have tried everything I can think of to get this to install, no go. Any ideas? TIA
Newly
Good one, Brian, LOL.
Newly
Bruce, I do hope you are able to get into the Shands Hospital research program. You sound so much better now than you have since your illness began. We all trust your future news will positive. Our prayers are with you. . .
Newly
Bruce, how great to hear from you. You sound much better than last time you posted. I sincerely hope you get into that research program right across the street, as I believe the Duke program had much success. This gives you a second shot at a total reversal of your prognosis. We are all pulling for you and miss you. Very best of luck. . .
Newly
De kan laerer a snakke Svensk, LOL.
Newly
PS That is Norwegian BTW--I can read Swedish (which is very similar to Norwegian) but I cannot write it.
Any suggestions?
I wish I knew the answers, but I don't! The Isralies have learned to live with terrorists. Perhaps that is our future as well, I fear to say. I do know suppression and oppression are NOT the answer. As with 9/11, everyone is angry (so am I) because we are frightened. This type of terrorism is not limited to other countries. IMO it is coming here as well (again!).
Contented people do not become terorists! The underlying social/economic conditions that cause the discontent need to be addressed. IMO, the internal problems in the countries where terrorists originate are domestic ones, and it appears to me they must be solved internally. Unfortunately, with the coming of the global economy, has come global terrorism.
We believe democracy offers the best chance for equality of opportunity to its citizens, but our attempts to impose that form of government on other countries has done nothing but cause greater discontent and unrest in those countries. The solutions to these internal problems have to evolve out of the citizenry and culture of those countries and cannot be imposed from the outside. In the interim, terrorism spreads worldwide. . .what to do? What to do!
Newly
Consensus of opinion seems to be that the Paris atrocities were orchestrated by home-grown terrorists in France. As civil unrest in Paris in recent years demonstrates, there are many unemployed and dissaffected youth of Arabic origin residing in France and many born there (keep in mind citizenship is merely a political concept, not a racial one).
Isis is the larger picture, a global rallying point for such youth in many different countries, but IMO this whole thing is merely class warfare on a global scale and combined with the influx of Serian refugees into Europe will become an even greater problem in future.
I don't believe wiping any group of people off the face of the earth solves anything, but rather escalates the situation to a critical level with explosive consequences.
Newly
Thanksfully I never owned any Bre-X but I remember the scam well. Thanks for the trip down memory lane -- not much has changed in the past 20 years, eh?!
Newly
Thanks for the update. I always thought he was murdered to shut him up. . .
In any event, Bre-X was a fabulous scam, LOL.
Newly
PS That's right, it was the geologist, not the accountant. I misspoke!
LOL. Of course, what happened to that poor accountant was anything but funny -- wonder if anyone was ever charged for that nefarious deed.
Newly
You and me both. I am not a patient person and spent last night considering whether to just wipe the HD and start over from scratch. Glad I didn't now!
Newly
Yes, I do, but since I'm still running XP, my I.E. is old and cannot be further updated. I used to have Chrome, too, but somewhere along the line it got deleted and when I went to download it again it said my system did not have enough resources to run Chromes. The biggest limitation this old Terminator I built to Bruce Thompson's specs is that it only has 2 gigs of RAM and the motherboard does not allow a further upgrade. Guess it must be getting time for a new computer.
Did solve my problem, however -- see my previous post to Koog, and thanks for your suggestion, it is a good one for everyone!
Newly
Thanks for your suggestion, sharpshorts, but I found the problem was due to two antivirus programs conflicting (see my last post).
Newly
Yes, AVAST seems to be hogging, however I believe I found the problem in Services. Turns out, one of the software programs I keep on the computer just for scanning purposes (not for real-time monitoring) was not closing down properly after scanning and the two antivirus programs were fighting for supremacy. I had had this problem of 100% CPU usage a few years ago but couldn't remember the solution. I suspected it might be some sort of conflict, and as soon as I went into Services I saw the problem. Disabled all antivirus programs except Avast, and problem solved! I seem to remember last time it was a problem of two JAVA updates fighting. . .
Anyway, issue resolved. Thanks for your help, Koog, but I should have waited until after I looked in Services before asking for assistance (BTW, this is a recurring issue with me, using my mouth instead of my eyes, LOL).
Newly
Yes, I am. Tried to download Avira, but couldn't with the CPU at 100%.
Newly
My computer has been running at 100% CPU yet again. I've physically cleaned out the dust, run numerous scans in safe mode, looked for conflicts with my antivirus software and cannot find anything to account for this. The hog appears to be Firefox, which I have upgraded to most current version, closed windows, etc. without any impact. Going to check Services yet again. Running out of ideas. May have to wipe the HD and start fresh. Anyone have any other ideas I could try?
Newly
PS Oddly enough, once I open Firefox the CPU goes to 100%, but when I then close Firefox, it stays at 100% instead of dropping back down. Don't understand this. . .
.there are still people left in Fort William?
Maybe, but there are lots of Americans living at Pt.Roberts, a tiny speck of America jutting into the sea and connected only to the Canadian mainland (just happens to dip below the 49th parallel, so it is OURS, LOL).
Newly
I am rarely right.
Oh, that's probably because you're Canadian (LOLOLOL).jk
Newly
I suspect you're projecting your own national inferiority complex onto us who live in the 'south'! I don't know anyone who doesn't understand where Canada is and how vast it is, and most of my acquaintance even know how many provinces it has, what Canada exports to the U.S., who has just been elected to office, what stocks trade on the Vancouver exchange, and even what the current CAD/USD exchange rate is, as well as the fact that Canadians are our very good neighbors to the North! 'Nuf said!

It's like everything else, isn't it. Someone comes up with a good idea, the grifters learn how to game the system, and the good idea becomes meaningless. Kinda reminds one of Social Security and Welfare, the denouement of which is yet to be realized. . .
Newly
iHub pages loading incredibly slow for me today. I'm on Web3. Anyone else having problems?
Newly
Tnx, Flo.
Newly
Ah, thanks, that's probably why I never installed it, because I don't use I.E.
Newly
I'm still running XP, too, and today I only had the one update, the monthly malicious software removal tool which I never, ever download as I suspect MS uses it to spy on me (or maybe I'm just paranoid when it comes to trusting MS, but with good reason I'd say!).
Newly
What is Silverlight, Flo, and what does it do? For some reason I downloaded it on one of my XP machines, but apparently never installed it and now I can't remember why I downloaded it (to resolve some problem I assume). TIA
Newly
Welcome aboard, Brian. Don't let the miscreants you have to run herd on here get you down. Just keep your sense of humor intact and you'll be fine (without it you're toast!). Good luck. . .
Newly
I vaguely recall having a similar problem with my OM copy of WinXP when I had to install a new harddrive on my computer and reinstall WinXP. IIRC, MS refused activation and I had to contact them and explain it was the same computer, just a new HD and then the activation was accepted.
Have you tried contacting MS in this regard? GLTY
Newly
Unfortunately doesn't work in XP, at least not in MY XP, but then, neither does anything else lately, LOL.
Newly
Maybe the Net downloads, but how could Avast block the restore function?
Newly
Yes, that's where all this trouble started. FF decided in its infinite wisdom to block several of my add-ons such as Adobe due to problems. When I went to download a newer version, my computer refused to download Adobe Reader, Adobe Flash and Java. Then I discovered it would not download anything else, either. Tried to download Chrome to circumvent the problem and that would not download, either. Then I tried a restore and discovered it would not restore, either.
Sooooooooooooooo, multiple scans with multiple programs later, I am left with no other possibility than to wipe the HD and reload everything, which BTW I used to do once a month on my old Win95 machine and it only took an hour or two and kept that machine nice and clean. This one is a bit more complicated, and I'm not looking forward to it, but see no alternative if I want to salvage this machine. Luckily, I set up my laptop with all the same things as on my desktop, and I regularly update those files to keep up-to-date with what's on this desktop, so I believe I'll be alright as far as whatever I've neglected to backup recently.
Newly
Thanks, but on second thought, Norton takes up a lot of real estate and that's what I'm short of, so I think I'll give it a miss.
Newly
OK. I have comcast also. How did you get Symantec, and do you like it?
Newly
I have done that multiple times, Flo, and each time it tells me Avast and Firefox are taking up all the CPU, but that should not be. There is no reason for either one to be doing that as far as I can see. I've been through services, event log, etc., done multiple scans with multiple programs, nothing. Perhaps this machine is just wearing out, I just don't know.
Anyway, back to my original question: what would you recommend for a good antivirus software to use on my fresh install? I'm looking for something free that will monitor, malwarebytes does not offer a free platform that monitors.
