The woman entered the room, and with a knowing smile
teasing her full lips, she sank into the comfort of the
plush chair in the corner. The handsome stranger turned,
having sensed her approach. Locking his steely gray
eyes on hers, he moved slowly toward her, his experienced
gaze measuring her, hypnotizing her with his soft murmurs
of assurance. He sank to his knees before her and without a
word, smoothly released her from her constraining attire.
With a sigh of surrender, she allowed his foreign hands to
unleash her bare flesh. He expertly guided her through
this tender, new territory, boldly taking her to heights she
had never dared to dream of, his movements deliberate,
confident in his ability to satisfy her every need.
Her senses swam. She was overcome with an aching desire
that had gone unfulfilled for so long. And, just as it seemed
that ecstasy was within her grasp, he paused, and for
one heart-stopping moment, she thought, "It's too big! -it will never fit!"
Then, with a sudden rush, it slid into place as if it had been
made only for her. As pleasure and contentment washed
over her, she met his steady gaze, tears of gratitude shining in her eyes.
And he knew it wouldn't be long before she returned.
Oh, yes, this woman would want more.
She would want to do it again and again and again............

JNJ; AMGN: Johnson & Johnson reports rise in blood disorders among Eprex users (JNJ) 50.10: Reuters reports that the number of kidney patients treated with anaemia drug who have developed a rare but serious blood disorder is continuing to rise. In a letter to European doctors, J&J said it was now aware of 141 reports of suspected pure red-blood cell aplasia (including one death) in patients treated with Eprex. This represents an increase of 17 cases since the end of April. Most of the adverse reactions have been in patients given skin injections. Amgen (AMGN), which markets the drug in the U.S. under the brand name Epogen for kidney dialysis patients, said on Monday that there had been only two reports of aplasia in patients. [Briefing.Com]

Company won't provide 2003 capex guidance, but does mention hopes to improve capital efficiency, which could be interpreted as evidence that capex will be flat or down, though the company was careful not to even hint at specific dollar guidance. Intel licenses RMBS Raser technology
Big win on Ethernet technology
By INQUIRER staff: Tuesday 16 July 2002, 11:38
CHIP GIANT INTEL said it had licensed Rambus' serial link Raser technology to use in Ethernet network products.
Raser 1-3.125 Gbps technology allows for physical layer interface cells which can be inclued in integrated network controller chips.
Rambus claims it already has licensed Raser technology for Gigiabit Ethernet, Infiniband technology, network equipment and other products.
The news sent Rambus' share price up yesterday to close at $.57.
In addition to this deal, Intel and Rambus have a complex cross licensing agreement for technology, much of which remains secret. µ

Intel pushing out tool deliveries in 300-mm fab, report says
Semiconductor Business News
(07/15/02 18:29 p.m. EST)
SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- In what could cast a shadow at the Semicon West trade show this week and next, Intel Corp. has reportedly pushed out the chip-equipment deliveries for its high-volume, 300-mm wafer fab in New Mexico, according to a report from Deutsche Banc Alex Brown in San Francisco today.
The microprocessor giant could also cut its 2002 capital spending plans by up to 20%, according to the report. Given that Intel is the world's largest buyer of semiconductor equipment, the reported cut in capital spending could be bad news for tool makers heading into Semicon West. The event runs July 17-19 in San Jose and July 22-25 in San Francisco.
A spokesman for Intel declined to comment on the report, saying the company is in the "quiet period." The company, which is expected to announce its results on Tuesday, recently lowered its second-quarter forecast due to sluggish PC sales.
The ongoing PC slowdown may impact its fab expansion plans, according to analysts. While other 300-mm wafer fabs remain on track for Intel, the report from Alex Brown suggests that the Santa Clara-based company has pushed out the equipment deliveries at Fab 11x in Rio Rancho.
Originally announced about two years ago, the fab is Intel's initial, "high-volume" 300-mm plant. The Fab 11x plant is expected to ramp up in the second half of this year. It will make microprocessors and other products, according to analysts.
“Regarding recent sentiment that Intel may be pushing out some equipment, we talked to some contacts late last week and confirmed there has been a slight slippage in [Intel's] 300-mm plans,” the report said.
“We believe [Intel] has pushed out some equipment deliveries for Fab 11x in New Mexico--particularly lithography tools (Nikon and others), but also other non-litho process tools,” the report said.
There is more bad news for chip-equipment makers. “As a result of such pushouts, suppliers are suggesting that actual 2002 capex for Intel may be $4.5-to-$5 billion vs. current $5.5 billion plan,” the report said.
“While other [Intel] 300-mm fabs (D1D in Oregon, and Fab 24 in Ireland) remain on track, this means that virtually every chip maker with 300-mm production fabs underway has pushed out to some degree during the past 3-6 months,” it added
AMGN [Briefing.Com] 5:38PM Amgen slips as Immunex removed from NDX (AMGN) 31.07 -3.23: AMGN and Immunex (IMNX 16.99 -2.56) both fell sharply just before the close; trading floor talk is that IMNX was hit by selling as it is being removed from the Nasdaq 100 index tonight ahead of its merger with AMGN. Arbitrage selling resulted in the IMNX weakness dragging down AMGN as well. SIAL will replace IMNX in the NDX tomorrow.

Zeev, could you explain the dynamics of this "Arbitrage selling", and why this should affect AMGN's price except as a temporary knee-jerk reaction? Thanks. AK

Comprehending Engineers in five easy lessons:
Comprehending Engineers - Take One
********************************
Two engineering students were walking across campus when one said, "Where did you get such a great bike?"
The second engineer replied, "Well, I was walking along yesterday minding my own business when a beautiful woman rode up on this bike. She threw the bike to the ground, took off all her clothes and said, "Take what you want."
The first engineer nodded approvingly, "Good choice; the clothes probably wouldn't have fit."
Comprehending Engineers - Take Two

An architect, an artist and an engineer were discussing whether it was better to spend time with the wife or a mistress.
The architect said he enjoyed time with his wife, building a solid foundation for an enduring relationship.
The artist said he enjoyed time with his mistress, because of the passion and mystery he found there.
The engineer said, "I like both."
"Both?"
Engineer: "Yeah. If you have a wife and a mistress, they will each assume you are spending time with the other woman, and you can go to the office and get some work done."
Comprehending Engineers - Take Three
***********************************
What is the difference between Mechanical Engineers and Civil Engineers?
Mechanical Engineers build weapons, Civil Engineers build targets.
Comprehending Engineers - Take Four

The graduate with a Science degree asks, "Why does it work?"
The graduate with an Engineering degree asks, "How does it work?"
The graduate with an Accounting degree asks, "How much will it cost?"
The graduate with an Arts degree asks, "Do you want fries with that?"
Comprehending Engineers - Take Five

To the optimist, the glass is half full.
To the pessimist, the glass is half empty.
To the engineer, the glass is twice as big as it needs to be.

Castaway
An ambitious software engineer finally decided to take a vacation. He booked himself on a Caribbean cruise and proceeded to have the time of his life. At least for a while. A hurricane came up unexpectedly. The ship went down and was lost instantly. The man found himself swept up on the shores of an island with no other people, no supplies, nothing. Only bananas and coconuts. Used to four-star hotels, this guy had no idea what to do. So for the next four months he ate bananas, drank coconut juice, longed for his old life, and fixed his gaze on the sea, hoping to spot a rescue ship.
One day, as he was lying on the beach, he spotted movement out of the corner of his eye. It was a rowboat, and in it was the most gorgeous woman he had ever seen. She rowed up to him. In disbelief, he asked her, "Where did you come from, and how did you get here?"
"I rowed from the other side of the island," she said. "I landed here when my cruise ship sank."
"Amazing," the software engineer said, "I didn't know anyone else had survived. How many of you are there? You were really lucky to have a rowboat wash up with you."
"It's only me," she said, "and the rowboat didn't wash up. Nothing did."
He was confused, "Then how did you get the rowboat?"
"Oh, simple," replied the woman. "I made it out of raw material that I found on the island. The oars were whittled from gum-tree branches, I wove the bottom from palm branches, and the sides and stern came from a eucalyptus tree."
"But, but, that's impossible," stuttered the man. "You had no tools or hardware - how did you manage?"
"Oh, that was no problem," the woman said. "On the south side of the island, there is a very unusual strata of exposed alluvial rock. I found that if I fired it to a certain temperature, it melted into forgeable ductile iron. I used that to make tools, and used the tools to make the hardware. But enough of that. Where do you live?"
Sheepishly, the man confessed that he had been sleeping on the beach the whole time.
"Well, let's row over to my place then," she said.
After a few minutes of rowing, she docked the boat at a small wharf. As the man looked onto shore, he nearly fell out of the boat. Before him was a stone walk leading to an exquisite bungalow painted in blue and white.
While the woman tied up the rowboat with an expertly woven hemp rope, the man could only stare ahead, dumbstruck. As they walked into the house, she said casually, "It's not much, but I call it home. Sit down, please. Would you like to have a drink?"
"No, no, thank you," he said, still dazed. "I couldn't drink another drop of coconut juice."
"It's not coconut juice," the woman replied. "I have made a still. How about a Piña Colada?"
Trying to hide his continued amazement, the software engineer accepted, and they sat down on her couch to talk. After they had exchanged their stories, the woman announced, "I'm going to slip into something more comfortable. Would you like to have a shower and a shave? There is a razor upstairs in the cabinet in the bathroom."
No longer questioning anything, the man went into the bathroom. There in the cabinet was a razor made from a bone handle. Two shells honed to a hollow-ground edge were fastened to its tip, inside a swivel mechanism. "This woman is absolutely amazing," he mused.
When he returned, the woman greeted him wearing nothing but vines strategically positioned -- and smelling faintly of gardenias. She beckoned for him to sit down next to her. "Tell me," she began suggestively, slithering closer to him, "We've both been out here for a very long time. You've been lonely. There's something I'm sure you really feel like doing right now, something you've been longing to do for all of these months."
She stared into his eyes.
He couldn't believe what he was hearing -- this was like all of his dreams coming true in one day.
"You mean...," he replied, "I can check my e-mail from here?
Zeev, you mean compression? For myself, it's tension! <g>
VECO Upgrade [Well-known firm? <g>]
Hoefer & Arnett Upgrades Rating on Veeco Instruments
July 12, 2002 2:38:00 PM ET
SAN FRANCISCO, July 12 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Hoefer and Arnett technology analyst, Mark Miller, upgraded Veeco Instruments VECO from a hold to a buy. Veeco's merger with FEI Company clearly gets the firm back on track for solid growth. The complementary nature of each firm's metrology technology is a plus. Besides making Veeco a major player in semiconductor metrology it also positions the firm as a clear leader in the nanotechnology revolution. Veeco also benefits from FEI's higher historical margins and boarder, more stable customer base. We also believe this merger could spark additional consolidation in the semiconductor equipment space.
Hoefer & Arnett Incorporated is a member of the National Association of Securities Dealers, CRD number 10883.

Canadian Shaman Threatens Stock Market Collapse Unless Pot Is Legalized
MITCHELL, S.D. (Wireless Flash) -- It might not be any of his business but a marijuana-loving Canadian shaman is taking credit for the kooky way the stock market has been acting lately.
Doug Pederson claims that the current stock volatility is directly related to a curse he put on participating countries of the United Nations back in January, 2000, after they refused to legalize pot.
Pothead Pederson made the curse with the help of four sacred stones that he claims are the America's equivalent to the Holy Grail.
He claims the stones caused an elevator in the Empire State Building to collapse and now they'll do the same for the stock market, unless pot is legalized.
In fact, he's scheduling the crash for around two months from now -- which he says leaves plenty of time for the U.N. to change its weed rules
