It's going to be a big holiday season for 4K, Baker suggested.
"Simon Baker, vice president of industry analysis for the NPD Group recently predicted that 4K "will exceed everyone's expectations this year," pointing out that more than nine times as many 4K sets have been sold in 2014 as in 2013 and that more than 70 percent of those sets were either 55- or 65-inch displays. It's going to be a big holiday season for 4K, Baker suggested. And that means it's going to be a big post-holiday season for those delivering content to those screens."

4K/UHD Leads TV Growth Heading into the Holidays, Reports NPD
Increased awareness, consumer focus on quality, and promotions will continue to energize category
Port Washington, NY, November 6, 2014 –
The 4K/UHD format is the driver of growth within the flat panel television category, with U.S. sales reaching $668 million so far this year, now accounting for more than 7 percent of overall revenue through October 25, 2014, according to The NPD Group’s Weekly Tracking Service.
“This has been a year of increased awareness and an evolution in pricing for 4K/UHD TVs,” said Stephen Baker, vice president of industry analysis, The NPD Group, Inc. “4K/UHD was still very new to the market during the 2013 holiday shopping season, but we believe it will exceed everyone’s expectations this year as consumers have had a full year to learn about the benefits 4K/UHD brings to the market.”
Almost nine times the number of 4K/UHD televisions that were sold in 2013 have already been purchased this year. This growth occurred despite an average selling price (ASP) of $2,400, significantly more than the $450 average for flat panel TV options overall, highlighting the industry’s opportunity to benefit from the growth in 4K/UHD this holiday season.
The growth occurring in larger screen 4K/UHD TVs is a testament to the quality that this technology is delivering to consumers. More than 70 percent of the 4K/UHD TVs sold year-to-date in 2014 were either 55” or 65” displays. This segment isn’t just driving growth in TV sales, it is also driving growth in sales of larger screen sizes.
“Samsung claimed the 4K/UHD market leader spot with a variety of competitively priced options, concentrating on the hottest screen size segments,” added Baker. “As holiday promotions get underway, this year will be the critical point for 4K/UHD to begin to claim its position as the ‘must have’ premium TV experience. The right pricing combined with increased awareness will be essential for success this holiday. Prices have fallen 10 percent over the last four weeks, since Vizio entered the 4K/UHD market, showing that awareness and brand won’t be the only factors in delivering 4K/UHD volumes over the holiday.”
SAMSUNG Exclusives: DirecTV, M-GO, now ULTRAFLIX My Take: The move by Samsung to provide access to more 4K content is definitely welcomed, but on the other hand, I hope that both the DirecTV and M-GO "exclusive" agreements with Samsung don't last too long as although they serve to boost Samsung's 4K market penetration, they don't serve to expand 4K offerings across the board to all 4K Ultra HD TV owners.
edit: "exclusive" until SONY, VIZIO catches up at least. NUVOLA NP-1 owners have had ULTRAFLIX for a while now.
Quote below from "Samsung Joins Forces With DirecTV and M-GO To Provide 4K Programming"
To get things off the ground, I see the need for some exclusive partnerships that can test the waters, iron out any bugs, and get customer feedback. However, in order to get consumers to really embrace 4K, at a reasonable point content services need to be TV-brand agnostic, and TV brands need to be content service agnostic. If not, consumer confusion will result with regards to what brand 4K Ultra HD TVs match up with the VOD and Online Services they desire.

I wonder if the arrival of Ultraflix on Samsung and soon to be other manufacturer UHD TV's will precipitate the arrival of media campaigns involving Ultraflix?
Samsung Adds 4K Content Offering to SmartTV Firmware
UltraFlix 4K streaming channel will be launched on all 2014 Samsung Ultra High-Definition TVs.
SAN JOSE, Calif. — NanoTech Entertainment announced that it has signed an agreement with Samsung Electronics America to provide the UltraFlix 4K streaming channel on all 2014 Samsung Ultra High-Definition TVs. The transactional video-on-demand 4K network will be available starting Tuesday, November 25, on Samsung UHD TVs as a featured 4K App. With UltraFlix, Samsung UHD TV customers will have one-click access to more than 500 hours of 4K Ultra HD pay-per-view movies, concerts, TV shows and special events, including 100 hours of free content.
UltraFlix and Samsung UHD TVs will deliver 4K content with a resolution of 3840 x 2160, which is four times that of full HD TVs. Designed for HEVC compression, NanoTech’s streaming 4K UHD software achieves up to 50 percent better compression than the H.264 standard. This enables 4K delivery over easily available Internet delivery speeds.

I would imagine that this will motivate Sony and Vizio to get moving on releasing their Ultraflix apps in light of this news. Samsung already has some nice exclusive streaming deals announced, this places them at the head of the pack in terms of sheer uhd content.
iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus A8 capable of 4K playback
It's been discovered that the A8 chip running the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus is capable of playing 4K video.
Apple boasted about many features when it launched the iPhone 6 and the iPhone Plus, but 4K playback wasn't one of them.
Of course, that's because such a feature would be pretty pointless. The iPhone 6 has a 1334 x 750 display, while the iPhone 6 Plus has a 1920 x 1080 - neither of which comes close to being able to output 4K (3840 x 2160) video as it was intended to be seen.
Still, the developers of free Mac-to-iPhone file conversion app WALTR have discovered that the A8 chip running within the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus is at least capable of handling 4K video. In testing its app, Softorino was found that such UHD video loaded up seamlessly on Apple's latest smartphones.
While this doesn't have any immediate applications for the reasons mentioned above, it does make us think that Apple is well prepared should a new Apple TV model be launched in 2015. Should Apple slip an A8 chip into such a device (which it likely would), we now know that it would be ready to pump 4K content to your UHD TV without issue.
Combined with the recent launch of the iMac with Retina 5K Display, it's clear that Apple is eyeing an Ultra High Definition future.

CNBC: "Surprise holiday hit: The Ultra High-Def 4K TV" Unit shipments of Ultra HD displays are expected to reach 800,000 in 2014, earning $1.9 billion in revenue, a 517 percent increase over the 2013 total. The next big thing in home entertainment this holiday shopping season is likely to be the ultra high-definition 4K television. Or maybe not.
IMO, this is a well written fair assessment of 4K TV adoption. Espelian said, "I consider myself a 4K realist, and some of the things you hear out there are just cheerleading," he told CNBC. "It's all a bit overblown, but there is also a lot of skepticism; the truth is somewhere in the middle."
...and it's this that one can be excited about:
http://www.cnbc.com/id/102195740?trknav=homestack:topnews:5#.
The consumer electronics industry, which has touted the system with images four times sharper than current flat-screen HD pictures, forecasts a surge in revenue this year, driven partly by 4K. Prices are down also, which could be enough to entice viewers to take the plunge and replace the HD set they bought before the recession.
In just two years, prices for the 4K declined by more than 85 percent worldwide, falling from $7,851 in 2012 to $1,120 in 2014, according to market research firm NPD. In North America the price decline was even bigger, dropping 89 percent, from $18,668 to $1,986, during the same period.

But some industry experts liken 4K to the last big breakthrough, 3-D TV, which has not caught on, and warn that it might take a few more years before there is enough 4K content to make it worth shelling out a lot of money for. Some high-end Smart TV models that have massive screens and added features, like Wi-Fi and Web browsers, have price tags over $25,000.

"4K TVs will exceed everyone's expectations for sales results," Stephen Baker, vice president of industry analysis at NPD, boldly forecasted. "I'm not saying that by the end of the season, after the Super Bowl, that a certain percentage of Americans will have 4K, but from the industry perspective, it will help drive revenues."
But Joel Espelien, a senior adviser for The Diffusion Group (TDG), a Texas-based research firm that studies the consumer TV and video field, is not so sure Americans are willing to go all out for 4K boob tubes, at least not this Christmas.

"I consider myself a 4K realist, and some of the things you hear out there are just cheerleading," he told CNBC. "It's all a bit overblown, but there is also a lot of skepticism; the truth is somewhere in the middle."
In fact, a TDG survey earlier this year found only 6 percent of broadband homes are "moderately" or "highly likely" to buy a 4K TV, and 83 percent of consumers are completely unfamiliar with the term Ultra HD.
(For techies, Ultra HD has a resolution of 3840 pixels × 2160 lines. It has twice the horizontal and vertical resolution of the 1080p HDTV format, with four times as many pixels overall.)
Samsung now sells several 4K models for less than $2,000, with one as low as $899, but it also has an 85-inch screen job that retails at $38,990. Sony, LG, Panasonic and Toshiba are also in the marketplace with 4K televisions, and you can pick up a 50-inch Sekei for just $800.
The Consumer Electronics Association is expecting big things from 4K as fewer TVs are being sold around the world. "Ultra HD TV and 3-D printers are generating tremendous consumer excitement and cementing their place as the next generation of 'must have' products," Gary Shapiro, the association's president and CEO, said recently.
Black Friday 'deals' not so hot after all: Study
"The continued market growth of Ultra HD TV is performing better than initially projected in 2014," the CEA said when it updated its forecast for this year. Unit shipments of Ultra HD displays are expected to reach 800,000 in 2014, earning $1.9 billion in revenue, a 517 percent increase over the 2013 total. And it expects revenue from 4K sets to exceed $5 billion in 2015, up from virtually nothing in 2012.
The CEA says TV sales remain critical to the industry's overall bottom line, with total TV sets and displays projected to reach $18.4 billion in 2014, down 5 percent from 2013. LCD TVs will account for 94 percent of all digital display sets sold this year, with 36.7 million units expected to ship in 2014. That total will produce $17.3 billion in revenue, in line with 2013 levels as the third-highest revenue driver to the industry.
The new U.S. Consumer Electronics Sales and Forecasts report projects that total industry revenue, including televisions, will reach a record $211.3 billion in 2014; a steady 2 percent increase from $207 billion in sales in 2013. Looking ahead to 2015, the CEA expects total industry sales to grow by 1.2 percent, with industry revenues reaching another all-time high of $214 billion.
This is what gives NPD's Baker optimism about 4K television's future. "I have not heard a lot of naysayers about 4K, in contrast to 3-D, which everyone knew was a gimmick," he told CNBC.com.
"No. 1, it's a great picture—everything looks better—that's what sets 4K apart. It appeals to the higher end, probably an older demographic, with money to spend."
Here's what shoppers will spend on this holiday
To that, TDG's Espelien replies: "This is going to be a very niche market. It's really a status symbol, something to show off to your friends."
But he does see 4K TV growing as more content and streaming becomes available. At the moment, he noted, there is no 4K pay TV or Blu-Ray discs. Only a few shows on Netflix for a few people with the very fast bandwidth the system requires.
"By the end of next year, we may actually have 4K Blu-Ray, so by Christmas 2015, it may be worth it, but not this year," said Espelien. He noted that the average life span of a television set is seven to 10 years, which begs the question: Why would consumers invest in a product that is not yet complete?
"All I can say is, in seven or 10 years, is I am certain there will be 4K content," Epselien said.
"But marketing a device with sex-appeal for the future generally does not work with consumer products," he said. "The jury's still out."

Global Head of Distribution & Corporate Vice President of the Sony Corporation, Discovery Communications and IMAX Corporation joint venture, Rod Riegel, of NanoTech's Content Advisory Board added, "The proprietary post-production film processing technology we use produces visually stunning, razor-sharp UHD results with an astonishing level of detail. IMAX features are typically top-grossing films and have received numerous Academy Award® nominations. We're excited to offer this kind of marquee entertainment at an unmatched level of 4K quality to consumers."

Can you prove this please? Thanks.
But just imagine if the otcmarkets.com didn't update their system until tonight?! You could have had a hay day for 12 hours! #tear
lol, no
lol, my brokerage firm shows a previous close of $401.
Once again the current sales places you in the minority. Watch and learn.
If I could afford one (a private jet) I'd buy one. At Vizio's price point, anyone who can afford a decent HD TV can afford a Vizio P Series TV. Hence the reason for their success.
You must fall in the other 27%:
"No, 4k really doesn't benefit anyone. Who sits close to their tv? I sit almost 20 feet away from my tv. 4k wouldn't do a thing for me"
Three-fourths (73 percent) of online U.S. adults who saw Ultra High-Definition TV (Ultra HDTV) technology in a retail store are interested in owning the technology at some point in the future, while only 34 percent of people who did not see the technology are interested in ownership, according to research released today by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)®.
That really is the bottom line. All of the neg. stuff published about P series panels, will go right over the heads of many consumers and are things only videophiles would notice. The stuff the average bloke would notice, will hypothetically be addressed in their promised firmware update tba. With their general overall very good picture quality and incredible value, these Vizio panels are flying off shelves. Ultraflix will only enhance VIZIO sales. NTEK will profit from subscriptions. If they haven't already, I'll bet Vizio easily surpasses SONY and/or any other prem. price UHD TV's in units sold due to their price point.
There was some door buster sale for members according to some Vizio chat boards. People were camped out at 5am in 20* weather. Not I, lol. So, yes, I would believe there was a line, they were chatting about it online a few days ago while they were in line. It was a black friday like atmosphere.
FORBES mentions ULTRAFLIX (again)
"4K TVs: 9 Reasons You Should Buy One -- And 9 More Why You Shouldn't"
"8. Not all 4K TVs currently support 4K video streams from Netflix and others
With native 4K sources being pretty much limited at the time of writing to video streaming services like Netflix, Ultraflix and, at some point soon, Amazon Prime Instant Video, you’d think every 4K TV would at least be able to handle these sources. But they don’t."
Well, we know SONY and VIZIO will feature Ultraflix & um, Nuvola NP-1 - Universal compatibility..
http://www.forbes.com/sites/johnarcher/2014/11/17/4k-tvs-9-reasons-you-should-buy-one-and-9-more-why-you-shouldnt/2/
Won't matter. Vizio will achieve mass market penetration at their price point as well as the release of their reference series. If they end up fixing their current issues with the p series with their promised firmware update then expect more rapid success.
Amazon already has their infrastructure in place where NTEK is starting from scratch. To get their growing library online, streaming in this short amount of time is nothing short of remarkable. Once they officially release ultralix on other manufacturer televisions the industry will sit up and take note. They kind of already have which is why the ported app is going to be huge. Market is starving for content.
Yes, sometimes it takes time to implement new technology and services. Amazon is now giving themselves until January to get their uHd offerings "on line".

I say for first time, I spoke with Magnolia reps last night and both heard of Ultraflix, aware of corporate.bestbuy.com initiatives and said without my prompting, "if SONY wants Ultraflix - that's pretty big". Stay tuned.
Magnolia reps or TV dept. reps?
"It's still COMING SOON........load up da cheapies....... "
precisely, Ultraflix will be here on most 4K tv's, audit will happen
Excellent time to load and..
..nobody is touching my long positions but a nice lil bounce and sell play is in order I believe. Of course load and hold also another great play with all that's about to happen.
Amazon Prime 4K was originally said to launch in October (http://www.pocket-lint.com/news/130567-amazon-prime-instant-video-to-stream-in-4k-from-october)
...now, it's by January (http://time.com/3581899/amazon-4k-streaming-prime-instant-video/).
All that to say, no one doubts that Prime 4K will be happening and no one is freaking out that it's launch date keeps getting pushed back. Nobody freaking out because Amazon hasn't issued the reasons why, etc. etc.
Ultrafix 4K will be happening on VIZIO and SONY UHD TV's. Both VIZIO and SONY has confirmed Ultraflix publicly. No reason to doubt either of them.
No need to panic but, if you are going to dump, I'm waiting for your shares in the .03's. Sell away.
