It's been discovered that the A8 chip running the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus is capable of playing 4K video.
Apple boasted about many features when it launched the iPhone 6 and the iPhone Plus, but 4K playback wasn't one of them.
Of course, that's because such a feature would be pretty pointless. The iPhone 6 has a 1334 x 750 display, while the iPhone 6 Plus has a 1920 x 1080 - neither of which comes close to being able to output 4K (3840 x 2160) video as it was intended to be seen.
Still, the developers of free Mac-to-iPhone file conversion app WALTR have discovered that the A8 chip running within the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus is at least capable of handling 4K video. In testing its app, Softorino was found that such UHD video loaded up seamlessly on Apple's latest smartphones.
While this doesn't have any immediate applications for the reasons mentioned above, it does make us think that Apple is well prepared should a new Apple TV model be launched in 2015. Should Apple slip an A8 chip into such a device (which it likely would), we now know that it would be ready to pump 4K content to your UHD TV without issue.
Combined with the recent launch of the iMac with Retina 5K Display, it's clear that Apple is eyeing an Ultra High Definition future.
