This is HUGE. Do a search for "chromebooks" on Google News and you will see a string of school districts piloting or considering this device. Glassware fills the feature gap by making available any "legacy" application on any platform on a Chromebook.

Nice work for those that picked up some shares today. I had mine filled this morning but didn't expect it to dip down lower for the added fire sale discount :) This could be the start of the next leg up thanks to the shorts.
OK maybe not a small loss... I don't know their cost basis. But what I do know is that ANY is trading closer to the price range for when they were last shorting substantially, which was in the April timeframe: $8 - $6.90.

I suspect the shorts are covering at the moment for a small loss from what I see on the Level 2 for ANY.
I am also buying at these levels with ANY.
For backups/disaster recovery
ANY is trading. I had a low ball bid order filled this morning.
Anyone know if an up-list from TSX-Venture to the TSX will force naked shorters to close out their positions?
It happens when no one is willing to pay for shares above a threshold price, but will gladly pay for any shares made available below the threshold price.
Sometimes manipulation is involved when that same person puts in one or more large ask orders in with the intention of keeping a lid on upward price movement (shows up as a huge ask wall on the Level 2). That same person would have a bunch of bid orders in to scoop up cheaper shares.
Yeah that's an interesting tid bit. Would love to see this evolve.
Azure and AppStream are different cloud services for a different problem.
Sorry, I don't understand your question. Missing what?
Offline mode is something that none of the competitors have nailed. For example, VMWare Horizons View includes functionality that would allow an end user to "check out" their virtual desktop. However, it was then mentioned that if network connectivity is restored, an end user may not choose to "check in" the image back to the cloud out of habit. You then essentially lose all the benefits of having a desktop being hosted in the cloud by not doing so.
Peter also mentioned that use cases involving offline mode are difficult to address. There isn't a "silver bullet" solution figured out by anyone at this time. He then hinted by saying "Stay tuned. Today, Glassware doesn't have an answer for that" ... my interpretation reading between the lines is that it is currently being worked on, but they are not ready to disclose what this could be at this time.
Would like to know as well... is he considered a subject matter expert among his peers with clout? If so, this could be very good publicity.

Sphere 3D Closes $10.0 Million Underwritten Financing
MISSISSAUGA, Ontario, June 5, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Sphere 3D Corporation (ANY.V) (SPIHF) ("Sphere 3D" or the "Company"), developer of Glassware 2.0(TM) foundational thin client technology, announced today that it has closed its previously announced underwritten private placement financing for gross proceeds of $10,000,250 (the "Offering").
As described in the Company's press release dated May 15, 2014, the Offering consisted of an aggregate of 1,176,500 special warrants of the Company (each a "Special Warrant") at a purchase price of $8.50 per Special Warrant. The Offering was led by Cormark Securities Inc. and the underwriting syndicate included Jacob Securities Inc. and Paradigm Capital Inc. (collectively, the "Underwriters").
Each Special Warrant, upon exercise or deemed exercise, will convert into one unit of the Company (a "Unit") with each Unit being comprised of one common share of the Company (a "Common Share") and one-half of a Common Share purchase warrant of the Company (a "Warrant"). Each whole Warrant is exercisable at an exercise price of $11.50 per share for a period of two years from the closing date.
The Underwriters received a cash commission equal to 6% of the gross proceeds of the Offering. The Company has also reimbursed the Underwriters for reasonable fees and expenses incurred in connection with the Offering.
All securities issued in connection with the Offering are subject to a four-month hold period from the issuance date in accordance with the policies of the TSX Venture Exchange (the "TSXV") and applicable Canadian securities laws. Sphere 3D intends to file a short form prospectus (the "Final Prospectus") in each of the Provinces of British Columbia, Alberta and Ontario (collectively, the "Offering Jurisdictions") qualifying the Units issuable upon exercise or deemed exercise of the Special Warrants by July 31, 2014, failing which the holder would be entitled to receive 1.05 Units upon exercise or deemed exercise of the Special Warrants. Any unexercised Special Warrants will be deemed to be automatically exercised on the earlier of: (i) the third business day following the day on which a final receipt is issued in the Offering Jurisdictions for the Final Prospectus qualifying the distribution of the Units; and (ii) October 6, 2014.
The offered securities pursuant to the Offering are not registered under the U.S. Securities Act of 1933 (the "Securities Act") and may not be offered or sold within the United States or to, or for the account or benefit of, U.S. persons except in certain transactions exempt from the registration requirements of the Securities Act.

struftepete1, It's really difficult to speculate how this would work since I have not seen Glassware in person nor do not know how it works behind the covers except at a very high level made available in marketing material. What I do know is that local mode access is a big deal (think of loss of productivity if network connectivity fails) and that Sphere 3D's competitors already have some sort of solution in place for this at both the VDI (VMWare Horizons with View and Citrix Zenapp) and app virtualization tiers (VMWare ThinApp and Citrix XenApp).
There needs to be a software or hardware component to have local mode to work. All of the solutions in place by Sphere 3D's competitors that I know of use a software-based solution.
A:
I don't think it would be likely to integrate into something like the Intel XMM 7260 chipset. This is because the local hardware should already be capable of connecting back to the cloud using the device's connection to the network (whether it is LTE, wifi, or a wired connection). Offline time usually is a symptom of connection quality to the provider's network coverage. The 7260 chipset is also specific to LTE network connectivity (which would require the end user having a data plan with their device).
If we do see an integration of some sort with the Intel XMM 7260, I would suspect the motive behind it probably has more to do with introducing efficiencies in a mobile or tablet form factor device (ie. power consumption/resource usage).
B:
I suspect an integrated chipset to be used within the device is more likely than a dongle or peripheral device with the chipset in it. Though again, I'm just speculating .... there are too many unknowns to make a concrete guess.

Detour Gold Reports High Grade Gold Intersections in the Lower Detour Area of Its Detour Lake Property
Marketwired Detour Gold Corporation
TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Jun 2, 2014) - Detour Gold Corporation (DGC.TO) ("Detour Gold" or the "Company") reports assay results from its 2014 exploration drilling program in the Lower Detour Lake area located approximately 6 kilometres south of the Detour Lake gold mine on its 100% owned Detour Lake property. The Company extended its initial 8,000 metre drilling program to nearly 15,000 metres as a result of encouraging results and a longer winter drilling season. The Company completed 14,874 metres in 40 holes and has received assay results for all significant intersections of the program.
The Company has identified a significant mineralized system to the north of Zone 75 in following up a high-grade intercept of 17.3 g/t over 4.4 metres (DLD-13-075, last hole of the 2013 drilling program). This east-west mineralized zone (referred to as Zone 58N) was tested over a length of 450 metres by 28 holes totaling 10,888 metres. The mineralized system has a maximum width of 120 metres and narrows to less than 15 metres to the west and east. It has been tested from surface to a depth of approximately 300 metres and it remains open to the west and down dip. The gold mineralization is mainly found within the southern portion of a strongly sheared and altered feldspar porphyry intrusive containing quartz and/or quartz-tourmaline veins with up to 10% pyrite and multiple occurrences of visible gold. The results suggest that the grade and continuity of the gold mineralization may improve at depth.
"Confirming high-grade potential within trucking distance of the processing plant only after our second exploration drilling program and with minimal expenditures demonstrates the tremendous potential of our large land package," said Paul Martin, President and CEO of Detour Gold. "Our team is excited about the prospects for success over the coming years. In the coming months, the Company will complete a detailed geological and structural interpretation exercise of the Lower Detour area in preparation for the next winter drilling campaign."
Highlights from Zone 58N include (uncut assays reported) (from west to east):
9.69 g/t over 30.3 metres (hole DLD-14-105)
11.82 g/t over 32.4 metres (hole DLD-14-103)
12.74 g/t over 28.0 metres (hole DLD-14-110, 80 metres up dip from DLD-14-103)
5.67 g/t over 23.0 metres and 5.04 g/t over 16.0 metres (hole DLD-14-112)
9.20 g/t over 22.0 metres (hole DLD-14-116)
2.55 g/t over 31.1 metres (hole DLD-14-120)
Gold mineralization was also encountered in Zone 75 (20 to 50 metres south of Zone 58N described above). This mineralized zone is characterized by strongly sheared and altered mafic volcanics and feldspar porphyry dykes containing quartz veins and up to 25% sulphides.
Highlights from Zone 75 include:
4.31 g/t over 7.3 metres (hole DLD-14-111)
10.82 g/t over 7.0 metres (hole DLD-14-088)
7.41 g/t over 5.1 metres (hole DLD-14-100)
The Company has also completed 3,985 metres in 12 holes testing mainly geophysical (IP) anomalies over a strike length of 5 kilometres in the Lower Detour area. With only partial assays available, only minor pyrite and/or pyrrhotite with no significant gold mineralization were encountered in the holes.
All drill hole data, including drill hole location map and cross sections are posted on the Company's website under Projects/Detour Lake Exploration: Regional.
Detour Gold's drilling program is being managed by its Exploration Manager, Guy MacGillivray, P.Geo., a Qualified Person within the meaning of National Instrument 43-101. Mr. MacGillivray has verified and approved the data disclosed in this release, including the sampling, analytical and test data underlying the information. The true width of the reported intercepts is estimated to be 65 to 75% of the drilled length. No significant gold mineralization was intersected in the other drill holes. Samples are prepared at ALS Laboratories in Timmins and Sudbury and assayed at their Vancouver, B.C. laboratory. Analysis for gold is done on sawn half core samples (size NQ) using 50 grams fire assay (AA finish). Samples with higher grade gold (>3 g/t) or with visible gold are re-assayed using the pulp and metallics procedures. The Company's quality control checks include the insertion of standard reference materials and blank samples to monitor the accuracy of the assay data.
About Detour Gold
Detour Gold is an emerging mid-tier gold producer in Canada. In 2014, the Company is completing the ramp-up of its 100% owned Detour Lake mine to a long life, large scale open pit operation.
Interesting theory. Would explain why price movement seems capped at the moment.
Wish I could read the newsletter (not a subscriber). But based on my own DD, I also see huge upside potential in Sphere 3D.
The need for local access occurs when the end user tries to access data at a location with intermittent or no internet connectivity. With traditional methods of virtualization, the process occurs on local hardware through a software hypervisor. See how the competition does it right now:
Citrix Zendesktop Local Mode:
http://www.citrix.com/tv/videos/9487
Vmware View Client:
http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2032741
Two things that we already know about Glassware:
Glassware does not use a hypervisor. So if there is no hypervisor, how do you make local mode work for Glassware?
Silverline mentioned in his post from the AGM: "They showed us a new device they have developed that is about 1/2" thick and the size of a large credit card that they have just applied for a patent on, that does the SAME thing. Better yet, they are now working on a single chip that will do it all. This chip could then be installed in any device, so that device can become whatever you want it to be."
I think this chip will be used for local mode virtualization folks. The chip would do what a software hypervisor functioning on local hardware would do, except it will do it faster and more efficiently.
There are several critical issues that a local OS addresses that a cloud-based OS does not. As such, I don't see local OS's going the way of the dinosaur any time soon.
* Connectivity. You have to be always be connected to the cloud to access your data. What if you're working from a location with no internet connectivity?
* Security. You're trusting that your data is stored securely on the cloud.
* Latency. Glassware's solution is more elegant than the competition, but what Glassware doesn't have control over is the network connection of the end point/end user. How is the end user connected to the internet? What ISP? Are they wired in or using Wi-fi at a location with alot of wireless interference? All this can impact the end user's experience with Glassware.
In fact, technology evolved away from what was called a "dumb terminal" back in the 1980's because of these very issues outlined above. Today, we see a hybrid between local processing on local hardware such as a laptop, tablet, mobile device, or desktop computer and cloud-based processing.
Some app developers are now using cross-platform tools to publish their apps across multiple platforms. They would develop in one environment (iOS, Android, .NET/Microsoft, etc), and then use one of the many cross-platform tools available to publish across to other platforms automatically without having to re-work/re-code.
Thanks slyestjester. I discovered Sphere 3D by coincidence. It started with a random search of high volume breakout momentum stocks on the TSX-V a few months ago. After some DD, I then discovered ihub through the SH forum circus. I'm so glad there are so many knowledgeable people on this forum!
When a vulnerability is discovered after support ends, they don't get patched up in the traditional sense of issuing a patch/hotfix. This is because Windows XP is still Microsoft IP and to patch security holes, you need access to the source code.
Correct me if I'm wrong but with an app virtualization solution such as Glassware, the app is somehow de-coupled from the OS. Because of this, the vulnerabilities that exist on the OS tier are removed. How it does this, I don't know and probably never will in any great detail: referring to Morelli's comment on "sorry, can't tell you any more than that, from this point on it is proprietary IP".
Glassware's competitive advantage is that Glassware doesn't require alot of hardware to run. Ie. does not have a hypervisor.
Competitors:
VMWare ThinApp
http://www.vmware.com/products/thinapp/
Citrix XenApp
http://www.citrix.com/products/xenapp/overview.html
One other question that I have had is does Sphere 3D offer a solution which allows users to work on the app in local or offline mode? Do you have to be always connected to the cloud? What happens if there is a poor connection to the cloud?
Justfactsmam - Can you be more specific with the Windows XP example? Just trying to get my head wrapped around this.
Did he mention virtualization of the app or the host OS (Windows XP)?
If virtualizing the app, how does it work in scenarios of heavy integration or customization outside of application boundaries (ie. third party DLLs, leveraging OS-level features/config, registry keys, etc)?
Or if virtualization occurs on the OS level, does Overland/Sphere3D take on the support contract as third party support?
If true, that's very irresponsible to the clients of the hedge fund if they are shorting to spite someone else.
slyestjester - interested in knowing about this too
Shorting done through "Anonymous"
These are the trades by shorters trading through "Anonymous" from May 16 - May 28 on the TSX Venture. Notice the activity on May 20 (Overland Sphere 3D merger announcement). I believe an additional ~80,000 shares have been shorted on this day. The shorters scared by large buys from individual(s) trading through BMO.
