SHORTS STARTED CRYING.....MEANS TIME HAS COME TO GO HIGH..
U , V or W turn ?In all sense NEOM going up again ...
NeoMedia currently works with both Sony Ericsson and Samsung Italy and many of our competitors have similar arrangements with handset manufacturers.
The good news is that multiple readers are available for download from many of the app stores such as Apple, Android and Ovi, but it would certainly make it easier for the consumer if universal barcode readers shipped with the handsets, eliminating the need for consumer download.

Please read the Q&A with Ms. Marriott,
Adoption of 2D bar codes is on the rise
Why should marketers take notice of mobile bar codes in 2011?
Bar codes are becoming increasingly prevalent in all media.
They activate traditional and digital media by providing an opportunity for the consumer to engage directly with the brand at time of viewing whenever and wherever they are in a very easy to use experience. Simply scan and be connected to the content that you want, when you want.
What is it about bar codes that make them stand out from other mobile media?
Ease of use. Simply launch the application, scan the code and be connected to the content that you want. No lengthy URLs or phone numbers to remember.
By embedding a mobile bar code on advertisements or product packaging, brands are able to include more information in a single visual code and much smaller real estate area than you would if you had to include the product information.
For example, product nutritional information would take far more real estate to include on pack than the 2D code.
The 2D code provides access to an unlimited amount of data or applications.
The data or applications can also be updated without impacting the marketing initiative, therefore lowering costs.
The analytics which are available to the brand through the bar code campaign will also enable them to measure statistics around the consumer’s interaction with the product or advertisement.
Statistics can include time of day, location, duration of interaction and so on.
Is the market trending toward usage of a particular type of bar code?
Yes, the symbology which has the most traction is the QR code and I do expect this to continue to be the symbology of choice in 2011.
The good news is that the majority of the market is adopting open standards, rather than proprietary solutions, which is great as consumers are able to scan QR codes with any universal reader.
Which categories have shown the quickest adoption of mobile bar codes?
We have seen uptake across multiple categories, but perhaps the most traction today is in the publishing and retail arenas.
And which brands have shown the most enthusiasm for bar codes?
Brands of all sizes are certainly adopting mobile bar codes.
However, we are seeing significant mobile initiatives leveraging mobile bar codes launched by players like eBay, Procter & Gamble, Calvin Klein, Best Buy and so on.
What’s the challenge that bar codes continue to face?
Reach is currently limited to those mobile devices with camera phone functionality.
Consumer education continues to be an issue and industry initiatives to educate consumers on how to download the bar code readers and then scan the codes to access the information or services are necessary.
However, with the big companies like Facebook and eBay, who are each beginning to launch mobile bar code initiatives, certainly helps to catapult the reach and, ultimately, the level of consumer understanding.
Bar code reader installation is also an issue given that the consumer is required to download a reader in order to be able to scan the code.
Awareness is another issue.
Even within the brands and agencies, mobile bar codes are a relatively new mobile strategy in their tool box.
Further evangelization of the power of the mobile bar code as well as publishing of applicable use cases will be key.
Why can’t handset makers install bar code readers in all phones?
Handset manufacturers are certainly able to install readers on mobile phones. However, many have not yet done so.
In the future, a bar code scanner integrated with the camera, removing the need to launch the bar code application, would be the ideal scenario.
Are bar codes more suited to mobile marketing or mobile commerce?
Both. We are seeing mobile bar codes used for mobile couponing, ticketing and loyalty applications, as well as advertising, comparative shopping and product information initiatives.
What strides did bar codes make in 2010?
Perhaps the most significant is that we saw bar codes getting significant traction in 2010.
Bar codes appeared in more than just trial initiatives and actually became a part of full-scale deployments for brands of all sizes.
What are you willing to bet on with mobile bar codes in 2011?
Mass integration into print and out of home.
Open standards will be deployed over proprietary solutions.
And, ideally, I would love to see the mobile bar code take the place of the URL in advertising initiatives, but this might be 2012.

Mobile barcode scanning has experienced quadruple digit growth amongst consumers worldwide within
the past twelve months1 and is becoming a key mobile media element for many brand owners. Mobile
barcodes have also become top of mind for many consumers, with nearly half of US consumers having seen a
mobile barcode and opting in via scan to engage2 - in particular to access a discount or coupon, learn more
about a product or service, or gather additional information about a news story3.
Major brands and agencies are also rapidly incorporating mobile barcodes into their marketing efforts with
roughly 20 percent of the Fortune 50 already utilizing this technology.4
If you have not already added mobile barcodes to your marketing initiatives, the time to engage is now.
How does a brand thoughtfully use this technology to ensure ongoing consumer participation, increase
sales, and gain a competitive advantage? NeoMedia’s Best Practices, initially published in December 2010,
provide a clear roadmap for brands and agencies to assist in the development and deployment of their
mobile barcode strategy.

NeoMedia cannot give PR if Patent is not upheld by USPTO. Soon it shall appear in the official gazzete of USPTO. NeoMedia knows how many lawsuits can go against them if that PR proved otherwise.
NeoMedia believes mobile bar codes will replace urls in marketing campaigns because they can offer more information that is of more value to the customer. The best 2D bar-code campaigns have a call to action and offer value to the end user. “It's an intense time of adoption.”
On Tuesdays USPTO Gazzate if Patent 6,199,048 is published under NEOMEDIA name then this stock would be $4 - $10 As they have many pending License fees that includes SCANBUY and SAMSUNG.

NeoMedia. Big Player in Mobile Communications? (U.S. Patent No. 6199048)
The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has ruled in favor of NeoMedia in the re-examination of its U.S. Patent No. 6,199,048 , System And Method For Automatic Access Of A Remote Computer Over A Network. The full story is here .
This patent was discussed in a previous post and it seems valuable because it covers such a broad range of useful mobile phone applications. From the EFF's description :
The idea behind the inventions claimed in this patent can be broken down into three steps:
some index must be read off of a data carrier;
that index is used to look up information; and
that information is used to form a connection with a remote computer.
For example, suppose a consumer walks into a supermarket and comes across a brand of soup he has heard about but never seen before. The consumer wants to get more information on this product, and he turns to his web-enabled cell phone to see if the company who produces the soup has a web site with more information about the product. Instead of running a search on any widely-known search engine, the consumer types the UPC number found on the can of soup into his phone. The phone then looks up a web site associated with the UPC number, and that website is loaded into his phone’s web browser.
Sure enough, most of the early useful Android applications work like this. With 4 billion mobile phones in the world , NeoMedia are looking interesting.
Mobile Tickets to Drive M-commerce Revenues, says Juniper
Juniper Research has released its report, Mobile Commerce Strategies: Prospects for Payments, Ticketing, Coupons & Banking 2010-2014.
The study offers segment-level assessments of each sector, and pinpoints the key market drivers and constraints, sizing all seven mobile commerce market segments through global five-year forecasts of gross transaction values.
The report forecasts that rapidly-increasing usage of mobile devices for tickets for all kinds of travel and entertainment, plus sports events, will be one of the main factors driving the growth of mobile commerce. Mobile ticketing transactions are forecast to exceed $100bn (£64bn), based on gross transaction value, as soon as 2012. This is more than double the market in 2010.
Juniper says the report provides a one-stop solution for all players within the mobile commerce ecosystem, pulling together each of the detailed reports within the mobile commerce stream: Mobile Payments for Digital and Physical goods, NFC Mobile Payments, Mobile Money Transfer & Remittances, Mobile Ticketing, Mobile Coupons and Mobile Banking.
The report demonstrates the spectacular growth that Juniper forecast across all segments of mobile commerce. For each sector, the report provides six-year forecasts for transaction values in eight key regions of the world, as well as an analysis of drivers and constraints, considering a number of business models issues, as well as a discussion on operator churn and ARPU. It reveals that four of the segments (Ticketing, Money Transfers, Physical Goods and NFC) will more than double in transaction value over the next two years, whilst Digital Goods, Banking and Coupons will still post very healthy growth of 30 – 50 per cent over the two years.
But although growth looks strong, one of the vital recommendations included within the report is that commerce providers need to keep users top of mind when developing their applications. If the initial user experience is poor for mobile payment methods – either based on cost, security, reliability or ease of use - then customers will reject them

The PTO’s decision, which marks the final chapter in a lengthy process following a successful first reexamination proceeding that ended in confirmation of the patent in 2009, provides tremendous opportunities for companies in the mobile marketing and advertising space, allowing them to quickly implement new applications and services.
“We are delighted the PTO has again confirmed the strength of the ‘048 patent in the face of another third-party challenge to its validity. This ruling allows us to realize the potential of our efforts and innovations, further strengthening our partnerships,” said Laura Marriott, Chief Executive Officer of NeoMedia Technologies, Inc.
NeoMedia with Patent back..has millions in License fees from Virgin, Ebay and others.............
NeoMedia got their patents back. Virgin along with dozens of other
infringing companys were not willing to pay money to a company that
for one had no money to enforce their patents and two may lose thier
patents all together. Well if Virgin was not willing to pay before why
will they now? Within the last two months NeoMedia has payed AirClic
got thier patents back and has $2 Million in credit!! I believe the
credit is nothing more then part of a strategie to get others to pay
for using NeoMedia's tech. Now it is cost effective to pay NeoMedia.
They are definately here to stay and have $2 Million with Virgin's
name on it!! I believe that NeoMedia and Virgin will settle this issue
out of court. NeoMedia will drop the lawsuit to move forward (just
like with AirClic) and Virgin will agree to be the first to step up
and pay for NeoMedia's patents (just like with Acacia).
If you still aren't convinced why don't you look back in 2000 when
NeoMedia made a deal with Digital Convergence. Why would a well known
company be willing to pay NeoMedia $100 Million if the patents
couldn't stand? Oh and to add to that this wasn't just a well known
company but a company whose management team included a roster of
industry veterans from Time Warner, AT&T, GE, ING Barings and Disney.
Neomedia's management is not new to the game either:
Charles W. Fritz: Founder and Chairman of the Board-
Prior to NeoMedia, Mr. Fritz was an Account Executive with IBM
Corporation from 1986 to 1988, Director of Marketing and Strategic
Alliances for the Information Consulting Group from 1988-1989, and a
Consultant for McKinsey & Company.
Charles T. Jensen: President, Chief Operating Officer and Acting Chief
Executive-
He brings to NeoMedia, over 27 years of audit, finance, and business
experience, including audit experience with Price Waterhouse & Co.
You may also want to make a note of the NeoMedia and Virgin both
having connections to Amazon and Symbol. Is it possible that they
could have already settled this issue and are timing the news release
to max out the press?
