And what is the iPhone line for? The same as the Harry Potter line. A little magic, a new installment in a familiar story, the hope of being surprised. Perhaps a few of the people queuing on the street or online for this new device really do need a new cellphone or digital music player. But mostly what they need — what we all need — is the new itself, and the intensity of that need is not to be denied.
Absurd as it is, there’s a strange communal pleasure in how public the anticipation has been. For a moment or two, there is the possibility that this device will turn out to be that alien object we all long to hold, that completely transforms our sense of the world around us. All it will take to bring us back to earth is a wrong number or a dropped call.

Most of the early adopters — the ones who will have iPhones in their hands today — are used to devouring new technologies, and that is no empty metaphor. The real test of each new apparatus is how easily it is ingested and how quickly it becomes part of the user’s metabolism. All you have to do is watch a 9-year-old teaching her mother how to text to understand the truth of this. The difference between getting the newest new device and going on using your old one is the difference between eating a wonderful meal and merely having a metabolism. Whether it works, whether it sells, whether it lives up to its promises, it has been a while since there was a morsel as edible as the iPhone.

I got to 5th Ave New York store about ten minutes before 6. Major groups of media, large supply of New York's finest cops, iPhone seekers wrapped around the block. It was almost as much fun for me as buying an iPhone. I hope this collage gives a flavor of what it felt like in the scrum. A press pass would have helped. :º)

I'm not taking as much solace as others from ATT getting bad reviews on its service. If it winds up losing a lot of iPhone sales, I won't feel a whole lot better if the lion's share of blame goes to ATT.
Yes, Rev B might be sooner in coming, and be on 3G, but the huge PR bonanza with which we've been graced will be squandered, and Rev B will have a tougher hill to climb to redeem iPhone.
I just hope Edge is not as bad as I suspect it is, based on reports so far, and if it is that bad, that Apple isn't stuck with it for five years. Schadenfreude on ATT ain't worth spit to me!

Why is that petition by Act for Change to Steve Jobs re "unlocking" the iPhone signed by you when you feel it's stupid?

but why not some minimal cellphone service from objective industry standards on the part of ATT in the contract? Customers who have shelled out $500-$600 for the phone and probably >$100/month for a data package would demand that ATT perform above some level. I should think that putting some teeth into what "best efforts" means in this context from Apple's pov would be part of the deal. So much is riding on it.

The Cisco/Apple agreement re the use of the "iPhone" name comes to mind. More and larger WiFi areas may produce much innovation between the two "iPhones" as well.

I agree that there will be other suitors for the iPhone, but it may be "game over" if getting at the "T-urkey" carcass is a 5 year wait. Of course, for the sake of all, let's hope ATT rises to the occasion and performs in a way to make Ma Bell proud.
my worst fear re iPhone
If Apple gets it wrong on any feature, battery life, button pushing...you name it, it might cost a lot in bad reviews and a hammered stock price, but virtually all can be rectified in Rev B.
BUT IF ATT sucks in implementation, service i.e., so that making a call, excessive dropped calls...you name it, turns out to be hell, is Apple locked in to the T for turkey for five years (in the US)?
I wonder what are the escape clauses in the contract for Apple if ATT is killing the iPhone, and otherwise, the thing is "insanely great".

No, no, I understand that the 4GB iPhone will be priced at $499 and the 8GB model will run $599. What I’d like to know is how much it will cost me, each month, to operate it. And, on this point, both AT&T and Apple have maintained a tomb-like silence. Given that we’re less than three weeks away, I think it’s about time they spoke up. And when they do, I’d like to hear this:
One (reasonable) price fits all.
I understand that, from the perspective of the mobile phone industry, this sounds insane. Seemingly, these companies create entire divisions to concoct voice and data plans that would confuse all but the sharpest Rhodes scholars. But that’s the norm—pick a voice plan, pick a data plan, add a little protection this, some nights-and-weekends that, and bang, your customers are paying something over a C-note per month to use their phones to their greatest potential.

2 year contract on ATT iPhone service or not?
When Apple posted the first of the iPhone ads on Sunday night, a small blurb was included at the end of each ad indicating that a 2 year contract is required for service.
As noted by TUAW, when Apple added the latest iPhone ad to their website, they replaced all the ads with new ones that have removed that line altogether.
Clearly, Apple made a conscious decision to remove the line from all the advertisements, but the quesiton is why? Will there be pre-paid options, or other flexible ways to sign up for an iPhone?

KCMW, re Burst suit
That's just pre-trial skirmishing. Apple looks like it was about to lose its motion for summary judgment (defining various infringement technical words etc), and is attempting IMO a tactical retreat. The "without prejudice" just means that if accepted by the court, no decision on the merits of Apple's motion will be rendered. I would guess after scanning the original Markman opinion by the court that Apple will not be able to withdraw its motion without prejudice. It might just be a pro forma (formal procedure), knowing they will lose it, but not wanting to lose any rights they may have.
By no means does it mean that the case has been lost. Even if Burst establishes some liability for infringement on Apple's part, what the measure of damages is a huge issue in itself.
Tex might have more insight as to the flow, or process, in a case like this.
BTW I took your Google map advice on how to go to France from NYC, and decided not to go. My crawl isn't that good, and floating in rough water causes me to swallow too much water. It is bizarre reading about 30 or so specific directions only to reach the big pond....

selective early notification of the iPhone's arrival could have been considered passing insider info and IMO Apple thought it wise not to do it. It was a clumsy marketing idea that wiser heads overrode.
