sorry, couldn't resist, Heywood, hehe
Sad night...RIP, Steve
I was at the Apple Store on 5th Ave, NYC, and as far as I could see, there was nothing that acknowledged Steve's passing in the store. Nothing but excited people playing with and buying the products as usual. I'm glad to read that the Apple campus did have a flag at half-mast and I hope all the stores will have a moment of silence or something commemorating Steve, if not tonight, tomorrow....
In front of the store, there was CNN, and several other people with video cameras doing interviews. I was interviewed by thedaily.com, which I was told, should be up in the next day or so.

Apple's the gift that keeps on giving
A few of us here have been on the train since '98 and have seen a lot of naysayers come and go.
I remember the days when you took a lot of crap from Wintel salesmen when you wanted to see the mac section, usually in the back of the store. Rarely was there anyone who knew squat about macs UNTIL Apple defied the conventional wisdom and opened its own stores. And of course, Mikey Dell and the Gates crowd always made fun of the "unserious" mac machines.
Owning the stock has been a rollercoaster ride a lot of the time even recently. I've swallowed hard many times refusing the conventional wisdom to sell some stock when the position became crazily overweighted.
But I still believe in Apple's longterm future and its great creativity and execution. Of course, playing with "house money" has reduced the anxiety a lot.
Any thoughts on Apple suing Samsung?
On the merits, infringement, the suit makes some sense, Samsung copying the "look and feel" of the iPhone and iPad with the Samsung's Galaxy series. But Apple and Samsung have a multi-layered relationship with Samsung supplying many different parts for Apple's products.
Can the suit go forward without poisoning the relationship? Apparently Apple is sanguine with that. What am I missing here?
Apple sues Samsung
PS What a turnaround on AAPL today! Woo, what do ya know, it's earnings season again, and the rollercoaster is leaving the dock one more time.
corrected url, sorry
I hope you're right, "Protect"

Lisa, this MacDailyNews url has the alleged pics of a frail looking- maybe Steve- man.
It's pathetic if this is a phony story designed to manipulate the stock, and should be prosecuted. It's deeply sad if it's the real thing.
God bless you, Steve.

Good news in China
The iPhone to come officially this Saturday

Apple now has $45.8 Billion in cash !
conference call now on... http://www.apple.com/quicktime/qtv/earningsq310/
The full reports are at the WSJ, and Market Watch, the urls for articles are on yahoo now. Bartiromo gave the news a few minutes earlier, which is what I heard
$3.51/share revenue $2.01/share earnings
Bartiromo reports blowout quarter!
Folks, get your tickets here, the rollercoaster is just about to roll ! Hold on tight!
After following AAPL for the last 12 years,
any correlation between price and earnings, just before and after the earnings announcement, doesn't exist. It's always been a rollercoaster ride and requires a strong stomach. :0º)
And right you are too, Bootz
I posted this on that other board today:
Tom's leadership for us in all things Apple will be missed, as will his wit, warmth and lighthanded graciousness on the board. I remember one time his answer to a quibble of mine about nothing at all, with "sosumi". That was Tom's way and I loved it.
why only ATT on iPad?
That was the only shadow on the presentation for me. The prices shown seem to be ATT only.
Is the new chip only GSM? Do you think the other big US carriers are still negotiating with Apple?
you guys, you bot it

Blue, me in the same boat...waiting
My wait is much easier tho, with an old Elements,(about $60) and Office 2004. Both pre-Intel apps and Panther 3.9 system run fine.
Is CSI required for your work? Do you own Office 2004? I know Elements doesn't cut it next to CSI, but other than for professional editing tasks, it does make waiting for new systems, hardware etc bearable.

Bootz, the Seeking Alpha article
yesterday was uncanny in view of Steve's announcement today:
"Someday, after the world has hounded him enough, he will explain that he has been left with pancreatic insufficiency following his abdominal surgery. He now cannot easily absorb nutrients through his alimentary tract and has been left thin as a result. He is cancer free but is left with the unpleasant after affects of his surgery."

This fellow can't read or write, says he has learning difficulties but talks beautifully and is so gifted. Makes you wonder how many other wonderful people fall between the cracks of a "cookie cutter" educational system that mostly rewards conventional intelligence.

Apple's iPhone: So Far, the Best Phone Ever?
http://www.pcworld.com/article/153666/apples_iphone_so_far_the_best_phone_ever.html
Monopoly power, KC
Take a look at the Findings of Fact in DOJ vs MS. http://www.usdoj.gov/atr/cases/f3800/msjudgex.htm
It's not required for a showing of monopoly power that the alleged monopolist have unlimited ability to raise prices.
"33. Microsoft enjoys so much power in the market for Intel-compatible PC operating systems that if it wished to exercise this power solely in terms of price, it could charge a price for Windows substantially above that which could be charged in a competitive market."
Although Judge Jackson was reversed by the appeals court on his remedy of breaking up Mr. Softee, his Findings were left intact. They are long and arduous to read, but I gleaned a few other interesting paragraphs from a fast scan: 34, 53, and 60
Monopoly power has to do with a lack of realistic alternatives for consumers, not they have no alternatives. Also with regard to the oil industry, if they chose to keep $4+ gas prices with oil prices more than halved, they might have had a bit of a political as well as a PR problem, don't you think?
"Money Really Is Fungible"
This NY Times editorial discusses the denial by bank executives that any payments, bonuses, etc. to themselves won’t be paid with the same dollars they got from taxpayers.
"What we want to know is will they be marking the bills so they can be sure which is which?"

OT- my feelings too, Annie
Can you remember when the Dixie Chicks almost lost their career for daring to express those sentiments publicly? Now even Republicans are waiting for Bush to go. What a world!
PS Half hour line voting in midtown NYC just before noon today
Nice pick-off, Brad
It's safer to take your money off the table...BUT
earlier today, AAPL's selloff might be the fruit store capitulation that market's like to see to discover a bottom.
In AH, the stock keeps rising...
tomorrow will be interesting.
OT-Taleb........
I think Greenspan deserves a lot of blame, Bernanke not so much.
Did Greenspan really believe that the Masters of the Universe and their quant models had made risk a thing of the past? Whether he really believed the risk of catastrophe was once in a hundred years,(as he now says) or more than that, the stakes were too high to allow it.
IMO, letting interest rates stay so low while the bubbles built was irresponsible.
Kinda-OT- WLD, do you disagree with Taleb? em
thanks, tomm, that's consoling
Apparently Kashkari is Paulson's placeholder until the election. He will be on a very short leash. After all, how big are the odds of a "Katrina-like" event in the financial world between now and then?
His background in engineering reminds me of "Heck-of-a job Brownie's" background in horses. You can't make this stuff up with this administration.
