selective early notification of the iPhone's arrival could have been considered passing insider info and IMO Apple thought it wise not to do it. It was a clumsy marketing idea that wiser heads overrode.

Somewhat on point, this article deals with the subject of trading generally on inside info, not particularly on when the iPhone might arrive, but interesting.
