Look! Look! Look!
I was looking for extra virgin cold pressed olive oil on sale in the same store, but none was visible. All I could see was a ton of balsamic vinegar where the oil was supposed to be. I thought I was going nuts or there simply was none left. Then I noticed that the boxes where the vinegar was sitting said Olive Oil. I tore one open and sure enough there it was ... by which time I proceeded to scurf up half a dozen bottles as a future investment for my cooking.
Ask! Ask! Ask!
I was looking for rice cakes that were half price at Food basics, but none were left. I asked the manager if he had any in the back. He said, "No, what you see on the shelf is what we have left".
My look of discouragement inspired him to add -- " but we get a new shipment every Monday night.
Thanks Mariner!

The power of shopping powerful.
I started with an eye exam and an optometrist trying to sell me glasses for just under $700. Then two other estimates got me down to $450 and $350. I thought Costco would come to the rescue with a real low-ball number but they hovered around $444.
Of all places, Sears was able to meet all my needs for under $300 with a year end sale 50% off lenses and frames.

Yes, I was just wondering about that as I read about Ike's arrival in oil country. I may have to switch to long from short ever so briefly.
Great graphics btw!

Remnants of Hanna expected to deliver wet punch to Maritime provinces
By The Canadian Press
ADVERTISEMENT
HALIFAX - Tropical storm Hanna was racing up the east coast of the United States on Saturday, making its way toward the Maritimes and threatening to drench a region already saturated from a summer of heavy rain.
The storm, which left 137 people dead in Haiti, came ashore Saturday near the boundary between North and South Carolina and was losing steam as it began churning toward New England.
The Canadian Hurricane Centre in Dartmouth, N.S., said "very wet remnants" of the storm are expected to deluge the Maritimes on Sunday.
Prince Edward Island, northern Nova Scotia and southern New Brunswick will be hit the hardest, with between 60 and 80 millimetres of rain predicted.
"With Hanna, there's quite likely going to be some local, heavier amounts," said meteorologist Mike Campbell.
"We're even talking about possible local amounts...up to 100 millimetres."
Another system that expected to bring up to 15 millimetres of rain kick-started the stormy weather Saturday in some areas of the Maritimes.
Campbell said rain associated with Hanna would mostly be "an inconvenience" to residents in southern New Brunswick and western P.E.I., while it could cause major headaches for other regions in the Maritimes.
"The big concern would be places like eastern P.E.I., and up into Cape Breton (because) the ground is fairly saturated; they've had about two to three times the normal rainfall for August," he said.
"This additional amount could cause a fair bit of overflowing on road systems and so forth."
Transportation Department officials in Nova Scotia are still surveying the damage after several roads were washed out by flash floods last weekend.
During that storm, heavy rains flooded ditches and culverts in Pictou County, while rising waters in New Glasgow overwhelmed the town's sewer system and flooded the basements of several downtown businesses.
Prince Edward Island, meanwhile, officially recorded its wettest month ever in August, after a total of 238.8 millimetres of rain fell on the province.
Normal rainfall for August is about 87 millimetres.
Campbell said rain on Sunday could fall for about six consecutive hours, making driving treacherous, especially along busy highways or areas that are known to flood.
"It's a matter of avoiding travel more than anything else, especially areas that are prone to being waterlogged," he said.
While the storm will mostly be a rain event, winds gusting up to 70 kilometres an hour are expected in parts of Nova Scotia.
Hanna is expected to move out of the Maritimes on Sunday night before arriving in southeastern Newfoundland in a weakened state.
There were no weather warnings issued for Newfoundland on Saturday.
Meanwhile, forecasters were keeping a close eye on hurricane Ike.
The powerful storm was downgraded Saturday to a Category 2 storm, but it was expected to intensify again as it approaches Cuba and southern Florida by Monday.
Campbell said it was unlikely that Ike would impact the Maritimes.
"It will definitely will be an American issue, but it's not going to affect Canadian territory at all," he said.

Angel on the Right (2002)
March 29, 2003
FILM FESTIVAL REVIEW; A Man in Trouble and Without Love, Even for His Child
By STEPHEN HOLDEN
Published: March 29, 2003
Jamshed Usmonov's film ''Angel on the Right'' is set today in a crumbling village in Tajikistan, which is so bleak and impoverished that a corrupt kind of tribal law holds things together. Business transactions are conducted through crude ritualistic bartering that involves muscular arm-dipping handshakes between the haggling parties. Justice is administered by a mayor whose sweeping authority includes the power to decide when someone will die. He keeps a schedule of death dates in a log in his desk. Late in the movie, an old woman is allowed to exchange her designated day of departure with someone else's in return for certain favors.
This surreal twist reflects the Tajik filmmaker's fascination with the story of Attar, a 13th-century poet who, after encountering a dervish who reminded him that material possessions can't be taken into the next world, thereupon lay down and died. The film's title reflects an Islamic legend that imagines each person going through life with two invisible angels, one perched on each shoulder. The one on the right records good deeds and thoughts, while the one on the left records bad ones. On Judgment Day the scales are weighed to determine if a person's destination will be heaven or hell.
The two myths lend a cosmic dimension to a film that has a grim neo-realist look and tone. The story follows its antihero, Hamro (Maruf Pulodzoda), a sullen, mustached career criminal who returns to his hometown from a Russian prison to pay his final respects to his dying mother. While in Russia Hamro had worked for the Russian Mafia, and he is dangerously in debt to his mob boss.
But Hamro's mother, Halima (Uktamoi Miyasarova), who he is told won't live beyond three days, isn't really dying, although she puts on a convincing show when her son arrives. The movie's opening scene finds the gnarled old woman going about her daily chores, but when Hamro appears she seems to be gasping her final breaths. Halima, it develops, is in cahoots with the mayor (Mardonqui Oulbobo) in a scheme to lure her son back home to pay debts he owes all over the village.
A sullen predator with the taut, wiry body of a street fighter, Hamro has always been in trouble. Just before fleeing to Russia, he sired a little boy, Yatim (Kova Tilavpur), now 10, without even knowing it. No sooner has he returned than a group of townspeople present him with the child, whose paternity he refuses to acknowledge.
The more poignant parts of the movie, which is showing today at Alice Tully Hall at 1 p.m. and tomorrow at the Gramercy Theater at 6 as part of the New Directors/New Films series, show Yatim wistfully trailing around after his hard-hearted father, silently begging for attention. But Hamro views him only as an inconvenience.

Michael Moore to release new film online for free
By JAKE COYLE, AP Entertainment Writer
Thursday, September 4, 2008
(09-04) 13:38 PDT New York (AP) --
Inspired by Neil Young and Radiohead, Michael Moore will release his new film online and for free.
The film, "Slacker Uprising," follows Moore's 62-city tour during the 2004 election to rally young voters. It will be available for three weeks as a free download to North American residents, beginning Sept. 23. An official announcement of the film is planned for Friday.
Moore said he considered releasing "Slacker Uprising" theatrically as "Michael Moore's big election year movie" as he did with 2004's "Fahrenheit 9/11," which was highly critical of President Bush.
Instead, Moore opted for a symbol of gratitude to his fans as he approaches the 20th anniversary of his first film, 1989's "Roger & Me."
"I thought it'd be a nice way to celebrate my 20th year of doing this," Moore said. "And also help get out the vote for November. I've been thinking about what I want to do to help with the election this year."
The 97-minute long "Slacker Uprising" will be the first major film to be released in such a way. Last December, "Jackass 2.5" was streamed online and for free, but that was only a collection of left over material from "Jackass 2." Companies like ClickStar, which Morgan Freeman co-founded, have made films still in theaters — such as 2006's "10 Items or Less" — digitally available for purchase or rental.
Experimentation in distribution has been more common in the music industry, where the Internet has significantly damaged traditional business models. Moore took notice when Radiohead last year released their seventh album, "In Rainbows," online with optional pricing. In 2006, Neil Young streamed his anti-war album "Living With War" for free before its standard release — now a more common practice.
If history is any measure, "Slacker Uprising" could have made a decent sum in theaters. His last two films, "Sicko" ($24 million) and "Fahrenheit 9/11" ($119 million) are two of the three highest grossing documentaries ever.
Moore said that "Slacker Uprising" cost about $2 million to make and that he will end up paying about $1 million out of his pocket. Neither he nor the distributor, Brave New Films, plan to profit from the release.
The director's last film, "Sicko," leaked online and was downloaded illegally in large numbers. He says this download, offered by BlipTV, will be high-resolution and far better than "YouTube quality."
To receive the download, people can sign up at SlackerUprising.com. A "Night of a Thousand House Parties" is planned for Oct. 4, when local neighborhood screenings are hoped to be scheduled. A DVD will be released Oct. 7.
Moore last week released a paperback book, "Mike's Election Guide 2008" and is currently working on a movie for theatrical release next year. That film is expected to examine America as an empire, but the director declined to discuss any details about it.
For now, Moore hopes "Slacker Uprising" will help spur young people to vote this November. After more than 20 million 18 to 29-year-olds cast ballots in 2004 (an 11 percent increase from 2000), he's hoping even greater numbers of "slackers" vote this year.
Moore readily acknowleges this a film for Democrats.
"This film, really isn't for anybody other than the choir," said Moore. "But that's because I believe the choir needs a song to sing every now and then."

BMO buying up SYZ for the CEO for cancellation.
Sylogist arranges share buyback, CEO increases holdings
2008-08-27 15:57 ET - News Release
Mr. Jim Wilson reports
SYLOGIST LTD. ANNOUNCES NORMAL COURSE ISSUER BID AND INSIDER PURCHASES
Sylogist Ltd. is making a normal course issuer bid (NCIB). The TSX Venture Exchange has accepted Sylogist's notice of intention to have a NCIB in place. The purchases pursuant to the NCIB will be for cancellation. Sylogist believes that from time to time the market price of the Sylogist common shares may not reflect their underlying value and that, at such times, the purchase of common shares for cancellation will increase the proportionate interest of, and be advantageous to, all remaining holders of common shares. Any purchases made by Sylogist will also afford increased liquidity to those holders of common shares of Sylogist who may wish to dispose of their common shares.
On Aug. 27, 2008, there were 17,995,239 common shares outstanding and the public float was 12,396,738 common shares. Under the NCIB, Sylogist may purchase up to 1,239,674 common shares, which is 10 per cent of the public float. Sylogist, through its broker at BMO Nesbitt Burns, will purchase the common shares on the open market through the facilities of the TSX-V. The price which Sylogist will pay for any common shares purchased will be the prevailing market price of such common shares on the TSX-V at the time of purchase. Decisions regarding purchases of common shares pursuant to the NCIB will be made by Sylogist.
The NCIB will commence on Sept. 3, 2008, and will terminate on Sept. 12, 2009, or at such earlier times as the NCIB is completed or terminated at the option of Sylogist.
In addition, Jim Wilson, its president, chief executive officer and a director of the company, has, through a series of transactions since May of this year, acquired ownership of 447,125 common shares of Sylogist, representing approximately 2.5 per cent of the issued and outstanding common shares of the company. These purchases, combined with the previous acquisitions and dispositions since October of 2004, amount to, in total, 4.9 per cent of the issued and outstanding common shares of the company. Mr. Wilson now beneficially owns and controls 4,833,175 common shares of Sylogist, which represents 26.8 per cent of the issued and outstanding common shares of the company. Mr. Wilson's acquisitions were made on the open market through the facilities of the TSX-V and in some cases by private agreement, and all were made at the then market price of the common shares. All of the purchases were for investment purposes.

Enablence shareholders pass all resolutions at AGM
2008-08-26 17:54 ET - News Release
Mr. Arvind Chhatbar reports
SUCCESSFUL DEMONSTRATION OF FULLY INTEGRATED FIBER-TO-THE-HOME SOLUTION AT AGM
Enablence Technologies Inc.'s annual general meeting was held at the Brookstreet Hotel in Ottawa, Ont., Canada, on Aug. 26, 2008, and was attended with representation from more than 54 per cent of the total shares outstanding at the meeting. All resolutions put before the shareholders passed at the AGM.
Enablence also successfully demonstrated a fully integrated fibre-to-the-home system relying solely on its broad complement of access products, including the optical line terminal, splitters and the optical network terminal built through its North American facilities.
In addition, Enablence had, on display, more than 50 products aimed at the metro and long-haul markets, which showcased its world-leading planar lightwave circuit (PLC) capability. The corporation also announced the creation of two committees -- the audit committee, with Steve Bower as chair and Nishith Goel and John Ryan as members, as well as the creation of the compensation committee, with Stephan Guerin as chair and with Mr. Goel as member, making it a committee composed of independent board members.
Arvind Chhatbar, chief executive officer, provided a corporate update after the formal portion of the AGM and added: "Enablence has never been stronger. Our breadth of products and expertise in PLC-based technology coupled with the delivery of FTTH solutions means that we are ready to deliver on the promise of improved bandwidth as carriers prepare for increased customer demand."
The audio recording of the Enablence Technologies annual general meeting will shortly be made available on the Enablence Technologies website.
Recently, I was diagnosed with A.A.A.D.D. -
Age Activated Attention Deficit Disorder.
This is how it manifests:
I decide to water my garden.
As I turn on the hose in the driveway,
I look over at my car and decide it needs washing.
As I start toward the garage,
I notice mail on the porch table that
I brought up from the mail box earlier.
I decide to go through the mail before I wash the car.
I lay my car keys on the table,
Put the junk mail in the garbage can under the table,
And notice that the can is full.
So, I decide to put the bills back
On the table and take out the garbage first.
But then I think,
Since I'm going to be near the mailbox
When I take out the garbage anyway,
I may as well pay the bills first.
I take my cheque book off the table,
And see that there is only one cheque left.
My extra cheques are in my desk in the study,
So I go inside the house to my desk where
I find the can of Coke I'd been drinking.
I'm going to look for my cheques,
But first I need to push the Coke aside
So that I don't accidentally knock it over.
The Coke is getting warm,
And I decide to put it in the refrigerator to keep it cold.
As I head toward the kitchen with the Coke,
A vase of flowers on the counter
Catches my eye--they need water.
I put the Coke on the counter and
Discover my reading glasses that
I've been searching for all morning.
I decide I better put them back on my desk,
But first I'm going to water the flowers.
I set the glasses back down on the counter,
Fill a container with water and suddenly spot the TV remote.
Someone left it on the kitchen table.
I realize that tonight when we go to watch TV,
I'll be looking for the remote,
But I won't remember that it's on the kitchen table,
So I decide to put it back in the den where it belongs,
But first I'll water the flowers.
I pour some water in the flowers,
But quite a bit of it spills on the floor.
So, I set the remote back on the table,
Get some towels and wipe up the spill.
Then, I head down the hall trying to
Remember what I was planning to do.
At the end of the day:
The car isn't washed
The bills aren't paid
There is a warm can of Coke sitting on the counter
The flowers don't have enough water,
There is still only 1 cheque in my cheque book,
I can't find the remote,
I can't find my glasses,
And I don't remember what I did with the car keys.
Then, when I try to figure out why nothing got done today,
I'm really baffled because I know I was busy all damn day,
And I'm really tired.
I realize this is a serious problem,
And I'll try to get some help for it,
But first I'll check my e-mail....
Do me a favor.
Forward this message to everyone you know,
Because I don't remember who I've sent it to.
Don't laugh -- if this isn't you yet, your day is coming!!

Jags’ Collier shot, has life-threatening injuries
By RON WORD and MARK LONG, Associated Press Writers
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP)—Jacksonville Jaguars offensive tackle Richard Collier was shot and critically wounded outside an apartment building early Tuesday as he and a former Jacksonville teammate waited for two women they had met at a nightclub, police said.
Collier, 26, and former Jaguars defensive end Kenneth Pettway were waiting in a Cadillac Escalade when a gunman fired into the vehicle, said Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office spokesman Ken Jefferson. Collier was shot several times, but it wasn’t clear where he was hit.
Collier was in critical condition at Shands Jacksonville Medical Center, a nursing supervisor said early Tuesday. Later, spokesman Chris Turner said the hospital was no longer giving updates on Collier’s condition. There are a variety of reasons that can happen, such as a request by relatives.
Wayne Weaver, owner of the Jaguars, said in a statement released by the team: “We’re shocked and deeply saddened by this morning’s news about Richard Collier. We have been informed that Richard has had surgery and he’s in critical but stable condition. The entire Jaguars family is praying for Richard and his family at this time.”
The motive behind the attack was unknown, and the sheriff’s office was investigating. Pettway, who was released in final cuts Saturday, was not injured.
The shooting happened around 2:45 a.m. in a middle- to upper middle-class neighborhood just west of downtown Jacksonville and blocks from the St. Johns River. The players had gone to the apartment complex so the women could drop off their car, authorities said.
The women, who appeared to be in their 20s, were wearing nightclub dresses when they were escorted by police back to the complex midmorning Tuesday, but they declined comment. Jaguars spokesman Dan Edwards declined comment at the hospital. The team planned to release a statement later in the day.
Collier is the third NFL player to be shot in the past 18 months. Washington Redskins star Sean Taylor was fatally shot during what police said was a botched burglary attempt at his Miami-area home in November. Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams was killed when his rented limousine was sprayed with bullets minutes after leaving a New Year’s party at a downtown Denver club in 2007.
Entering his third year after making the team as an undrafted rookie free agent, Collier competed for the starting job at left tackle but was beaten out by Khalif Barnes in the preseason.
Still, the Jaguars believe Collier could be a future starter. They signed him to a contract extension earlier this year despite an arrest last season.
The 6-foot-7, 345-pound linemen was arrested Nov. 3 after officers found him asleep behind the wheel at a McDonald’s drive-thru window. Collier failed field sobriety tests and had a blood-alcohol level of .096, according to police. In Florida, it is illegal to drive with a blood-alcohol level of .08 or higher.
Collier was suspended two games and fined by coach Jack Del Rio.
Collier’s attorney disputed the police report and recommended that his client go to trial, but Collier didn’t want the team to have to deal with the negative attention it would have generated. So he pleaded no contest and accepted six months of probation.
He publicly vowed to stay out of trouble, not wanting to blow his chance of becoming an every-down starter in the NFL.
Coming out of high school in Shreveport, La., Collier didn’t have the grades or test scores to attend most colleges, so he stayed home with his mother and got a job in the produce department at Wal-Mart.

He worked there for two years before deciding to give football another chance. He enrolled at Tyler Junior College in Texas, about 90 miles west of Shreveport. He showed up weighing 390 pounds, having not lifted a weight since high school.
Collier quickly got his grades—and body—in shape and worked his way into the starting lineup. He transferred to Valdosta State in 2004 and helped the Blazers win the Division II national championship that season. He earned All-America honors as a senior in 2005.
But he failed to impress many NFL scouts.
The Jaguars were the only team to bring Collier in for a workout before the draft, so signing with Jacksonville as an undrafted rookie was an easy decision. His only other choice, he thought, was to go back to the produce section.
“It took me to lose everything to recognize how much I had,” Collier said during his rookie season. “It was a blessing, really. I found out how it would be if I didn’t work hard and apply myself.”

Google offers free Web browser to challenge Microsoft
Crayton Harrison, Bloomberg Published: Tuesday, September 02, 2008
Google Inc., owner of the most popular Internet search engine, plans to introduce a Web browser Tuesday to challenge Microsoft Corp.'s decade-long dominance of the market.
The program, known as Chrome, will isolate flawed Web pages so users can close them without shutting down the entire browser, and will make it easier to run other applications without downloading them to a computer, Google (GOOG/Nasdaq) said.
The software opens a new front in Google's fight with Microsoft, whose Internet Explorer controls more than 70% of the browser market. Google is trying to parlay its success over Microsoft in online searches into an effort to court users who want e-mail, calendars and word processing through a browser instead of products such as Microsoft's Word and Excel.
"They're protecting the flank to make sure Microsoft can't encroach on search," said Roger Kay, president of research firm Endpoint Technologies Associates in Wayland, Mass. "This is another branding opportunity for them."
Google climbed the most in more than four months in Nasdaq Stock Market trading. The stock added US$16.41 to US$479.70 at 9:42 a.m. and earlier rose as much as 4.1%, the most since April. The shares had declined 33% this year before today. Microsoft rose 41 cents, or 1.5%, to US$27.70.
A test version of Chrome will be available for download in more than 100 countries, Mountain View, Calif.-based Google said Monday in a blog post.
The market for Web-based software may reach US$160-billion by 2011, including revenue from advertising, Merrill Lynch & Co. said in a May report.
"We realized that the Web had evolved from mainly simple text pages to rich, interactive applications and that we needed to completely rethink the browser," Sundar Pichai, vice-president of product management, and Linus Upson, engineering director, said in the blog post.
Google began offering an online mail program in 2004, following with calendars, word processing, spreadsheets and presentation software. For Chrome, Google developed its own version of a programming engine designed to support applications that aren't possible with other browsers, the blog post said.
Representatives for Microsoft didn't immediately return phone messages today.
Microsoft's Internet Explorer has about 72% of the Web browsing market, followed by Mozilla Corp.'s Firefox with 20% and Apple Inc.'s Safari with 6.4%, according to research firm Net Applications of Aliso Viejo, Calif.
Microsoft, the world's biggest software maker, has led the browser market since 1999, when it passed Netscape Communications Corp.'s Navigator. Microsoft had about 95% of the market in 2004, when it began losing share to Firefox.
Google fielded 62% of U.S. Internet searches in July, about twice as many as Microsoft and Yahoo! Inc. combined, according to researcher ComScore Inc.
Microsoft, based in Redmond, Wash., released a new version of Internet Explorer last week for testing. The software lets users control whether it saves the sites they've visited.
Mozilla, also based in Mountain View, said last week it extended an agreement through 2011 to keep Google as its default search engine. The company is owned by the non-profit Mozilla Foundation.
Like Firefox, Google plans to release Chrome as open-source software, meaning programmers can edit the code and add their own features.
Google jumped US$14.66, or 3%, to US$477.95 in morning trading on Nasdaq Stock Market.
