Slain DNC Staffer’s Family Orders Blabbing Detective to ‘Cease and Desist’
Seth Rich, the DNC Staffer who was murdered in July of 2016.
Metropolitan Police Department
by Alex Seitz-Wald
May 19 2017, 3:11 pm ET
The family of slain Democratic staffer Seth Rich [ http://www.nbcnews.com/politics/white-house/dnc-staffer-s-murder-draws-fresh-conspiracy-theories-n760186 ] is threatening legal action against a private investigator after his "outrageous behavior" has given fuel to right-wing conspiracy theories about the unsolved murder of their son.
An attorney representing the family of Rich, who was 27 when he was killed last July, sent a cease and desist letter Friday to Rod Wheeler, a Fox News contributor and former Washington, D.C., homicide detective who was employed by the family and earlier this week told a Fox affiliate that he believed police were covering up details about the crime.
"Your statements and actions have caused, and continue to cause, the Family severe mental anguish and emotional distress. Your behavior appears to have been deliberate, intentional, outrageous, and in patent disregard of the Agreement and the obvious damage and suffering it would cause the Family," wrote Joseph Ingrisano of the law firm Katuk Rock, according to a copy of the letter shared exclusively with NBC News.
"Your improper and unauthorized statements, many of which are false and have no basis in fact, have also injured the memory and reputation of Seth Rich and have defamed and injured the reputation and standing of the members of the Family," Ingrisano continued.
The letter demands Wheeler "immediately and permanently" cease and desist from making any comments about Seth Rich or his death and suggests he could face further legal action either way.
Wheeler could not be reached Friday since the voicemail was full on both his cell phone and office line.
Wheeler's contract with the Rich family prohibited him from speaking to the press without prior approval from the family, a clause he apparently violated when he spoke to Fox 5 D.C. Monday for a story that quickly went viral on the right.
Rich's family also has demanded a retraction and apology from Fox 5 D.C. for the story, but has so far not received one.
Wheeler has since completely recanted his story, both in the press and in a private message to Rich's family.
The private investigator told other outlets the Fox reporter essentially put words in his mouth by giving him information that he then repeated in an on-camera interview. "That story on Fox 5 last night was inaccurate," he told BuzzFeed [ https://www.buzzfeed.com/claudiakoerner/the-private-detective-who-ignited-a-clinton-conspiracy ].
Rich, who was a data analyst at the DNC, was killed while walking home early one Sunday morning last summer in what police suspect was a robbery gone wrong.
However, some have speculated — without any evidence — that Rich was the source of internal DNC emails published by Wikileaks and murdered for the act. The DNC, the FBI, every U.S. intelligence agency, and the cyber security firm hired by the DNC to investigate the breach say those emails were stolen by Russian hackers. But Rich's death has become a useful red herring for those interesting in undercutting the Russian hacking narrative.
That includes allies of President Donald Trump and the Russian government. On Friday, the official account of the Russian Embassy in London tweeted [ https://twitter.com/RussianEmbassy/status/865571158862811136 ]: "#WikiLeaks informer Seth Rich murdered in US but MSM was so busy accusing Russian hackers to take notice."
Wheeler has since admitted he had no first-hand evidence linking Rich to Wikileaks, and subsequent reporting by NBC News and other outlets confirmed [ http://www.newsweek.com/seth-rich-dnc-staffer-wikileaks-leaked-emails-fbi-610383 ] Rich was not communicating with the group.
"It never contained any e-mails related to WikiLeaks," a former law enforcement official with first-hand knowledge of Rich's laptop [ http://www.nbcnews.com/politics/white-house/dnc-staffer-s-murder-draws-fresh-conspiracy-theories-n760186 ] told NBC News.
Rich's family only hired Wheeler on the urging of a conservative Dallas financial adviser and Fox News regular named Ed Butowsky, who offered to cover Wheeler's fees, as NBC News first reported.

Who Is Registered to Vote in Two States? Some in Trump’s Inner Circle
President Trump congratulated a senior advisor, Steve Bannon, during a swearing-in ceremony in the East Room of the White House on Sunday.
JAN. 27, 2017
Donald J. Trump [ http://www.nytimes.com/topic/person/donald-trump ] spent his first week in office repeating the lie [ https://www.nytimes.com/2017/01/24/us/politics/unauthorized-immigrant-voting-trump-lie.html ] that between three million and five million people had voted illegally [ https://www.nytimes.com/2017/01/23/us/politics/donald-trump-congress-democrats.html ] in the November election, first to members of Congress, then on Twitter, then in an ABC News interview [ http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/transcript-abc-news-anchor-david-muir-interviews-president/story?id=45047602 ], then again on Twitter on Friday, citing an unsubstantiated claim popular in conspiracy circles [ https://www.nytimes.com/2017/01/27/us/politics/donald-trump-voter-fraud.html ].
On Wednesday, Mr. Trump had announced in a pair of tweets that he would be asking for a “major investigation” into voter fraud, “including those registered to vote in two states.”

[ https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/824227824903090176 (with {over 45,000} comments)]
Since then, a variety of news organizations have found that several members of Mr. Trump’s inner circle were registered in more than one state during the election. Several still are. There is no evidence that any of them voted twice.
Registered in two states
• Steve Bannon, Mr. Trump’s strategist, was registered to vote in Florida and New York, the Sarasota Herald-Tribune found [ http://www.heraldtribune.com/news/20170124/column-does-stephen-bannon-live-in-sarasota-county-because-hes-registered-to-vote-here ].
• Tiffany Trump, Mr. Trump’s youngest daughter, was registered in Pennsylvania and New York, NBC News reported [ http://www.today.com/news/kellyanne-conway-donald-trump-s-daughter-tiffany-isn-t-registered-t107422 ].
• Sean Spicer, his press secretary, was registered in both Virginia and Rhode Island, according to The Washington Post [ https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/post-politics/wp/2017/01/26/it-turns-out-trump-son-in-law-jared-kushner-is-also-registered-to-vote-in-two-states/?utm_term=.8bfbe5cfb2d5&wpisrc=nl_headlines&wpmm=1 ].
• Jared Kushner, his son-in-law and close adviser, was registered in New York and New Jersey, according to The Washington Post [id.].
• Steven Mnuchin, who is nominated to lead the Treasury Department, was registered in New York and California, CNN found [ http://www.cnn.com/2017/01/25/politics/kfile-mnuchin-voter-registration/index.html ].
So is this illegal?
Not really.
Have you ever moved to a new state? And did you call up the people in charge of voting in your old state to tell them to go ahead and take you off their list? Probably not. Neither, apparently, did some members of the Trump family and his White House.
“There is nothing illegal about that,” Fred Voigt, the deputy election commissioner for Philadelphia, told Heat Street [ http://heatst.com/politics/exclusive-tiffany-trump-is-currently-registered-to-vote-in-two-states/?mod=sm_tw_post ], the News Corp.-owned conservative and libertarian site, which reported Ms. Trump’s double registration. “The illegality only occurs if one votes in two places, not if you’re registered in both.”
State authorities regularly purge their voter rolls of people who move or die.
Mr. Bannon’s case is a little different. A Guardian report last summer [ https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2016/aug/26/steve-bannon-florida-registered-vote-donald-trump ] found that Mr. Bannon was registered at a vacant home he had previously rented for his ex-wife, but that he had never lived there himself.
Shortly after that report, the Guardian said, Mr. Bannon changed his registered address [ https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2016/aug/26/steve-bannon-florida-voter-registration-home-breitbart-writer ] to the home of a Breitbart writer, also in Florida.
When he voted in November’s election, he did so by absentee ballot in New York, a spokesman for the state Board of Elections confirmed. On Wednesday, after widespread news reports of his double registration, Sarasota County removed Mr. Bannon [ http://www.heraldtribune.com/news/20170125/bannon-removed-from-voting-rolls-in-sarasota-county ] from the rolls, The Herald Tribune reported.

NATO Frantically Tries to Trump-Proof President’s First Visit
A ‘freaked-out’ NATO braces for Donald Trump’s first meeting of the transatlantic alliance.
May 15, 2017
NATO is scrambling to tailor its upcoming meeting to avoid taxing President Donald Trump’s notoriously short attention span. The alliance is telling heads of state to limit talks to two to four minutes at a time during the discussion, several sources inside NATO and former senior U.S. officials tell Foreign Policy. And the alliance scrapped plans to publish the traditional full post-meeting statement meant to crystallize NATO’s latest strategic stance.
On May 25, NATO will host the heads of state of all 28 member countries in what will be Trump’s first face-to-face summit with an alliance he bashed repeatedly while running for president. NATO traditionally organizes a meeting within the first few months of a new U.S. president’s term, but Trump has the alliance more on edge than any previous newcomer, forcing organizers to look for ways to make the staid affair more engaging.
“It’s kind of ridiculous how they are preparing to deal with Trump,” said one source briefed extensively on the meeting’s preparations. “It’s like they’re preparing to deal with a child — someone with a short attention span and mood who has no knowledge of NATO, no interest in in-depth policy issues, nothing,” said the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity. “They’re freaking out.”

What Does Barack Obama Really Think of Donald Trump? ‘He’s Nothing But a Bullsh–ter’
By Sandra Sobieraj Westfall
Posted on May 17, 2017 at 8:00am EDT
Cool, even-keeled, no-drama Barack Obama [ http://people.com/tag/barack-obama/ ] is one of the few people in the country who hasn’t publicly opined on the tweets and turmoil wrought by President Trump. And so a persistent question to those close to the former president is: What does Obama really think of the man now occupying the Oval Office?
“He’s nothing but a bullsh–ter,” Obama told two friends early last November, describing an election night phone call with Trump, in which the businessman suddenly professed his “respect” and “admiration” for Obama—after years of hectoring [ http://www.politico.com/story/2016/11/9-ways-trump-insulted-obama-231184 ].
Speaking to PEOPLE for its new cover story on Obama and his wife Michelle [ http://people.com/tag/michelle-obama/ ] adjusting to life outside the White House, the two friends quoted Obama’s blunt assessment of President-elect Trump. And how has Obama’s opinion changed since Trump been in office? “Well,” said one of the sources, “it hasn’t gotten any better.”

Human ancestry correlates with language and reveals that race is not an objective genomic classifier
Scientific Reports 7, Article number: 1572 (2017)
doi:10.1038/s41598-017-01837-7
Published online:08 May 2017
Abstract
Genetic and archaeological studies have established a sub-Saharan African origin for anatomically modern humans with subsequent migrations out of Africa. Using the largest multi-locus data set known to date, we investigated genetic differentiation of early modern humans, human admixture and migration events, and relationships among ancestries and language groups. We compiled publicly available genome-wide genotype data on 5,966 individuals from 282 global samples, representing 30 primary language families. The best evidence supports 21 ancestries that delineate genetic structure of present-day human populations. Independent of self-identified ethno-linguistic labels, the vast majority (97.3%) of individuals have mixed ancestry, with evidence of multiple ancestries in 96.8% of samples and on all continents. The data indicate that continents, ethno-linguistic groups, races, ethnicities, and individuals all show substantial ancestral heterogeneity. We estimated correlation coefficients ranging from 0.522 to 0.962 between ancestries and language families or branches. Ancestry data support the grouping of Kwadi-Khoe, Kx’a, and Tuu languages, support the exclusion of Omotic languages from the Afroasiatic language family, and do not support the proposed Dené-Yeniseian language family as a genetically valid grouping. Ancestry data yield insight into a deeper past than linguistic data can, while linguistic data provide clarity to ancestry data.

Tyrannosaurus Rex's Bite Force Measured 8,000 Pounds, Scientists Say
Tyrannosaurus rex jaws generated 8,000-pound bite forces and let the creature eat everything from duck-billed dinosaurs to triceratops.
A Triceratops pelvis bearing nearly 80 T. rex bite marks. The bracket shows a region where the carnivore repeatedly removed sections of bone.
Morning Edition
May 17, 2017
The teeth of Tyrannosaurus rex have been called "killer bananas," and a new study in the journal Scientific Reports [full text https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-017-02161-w ] shows just how hard those fearsome chompers could clamp down.
"What we came up with were bite forces of around 8,000 pounds," says Gregory Erickson [ http://www.bio.fsu.edu/faculty-erickson.php ] of Florida State University. "That's like setting three small cars on top of the jaws of a T. rex — that's basically what was pushing down."
Erickson and his colleague Paul Gignac [ http://www.healthsciences.okstate.edu/college/biomedical/anatomy/paleontology/gignac.php ], of Oklahoma State University, initially looked at the bite forces produced by different crocodile species.
"Crocodiles are close relatives of dinosaurs," says Erickson. "It's probably our best model for looking at dinosaurs."
Their work involved lassoing, say, a 17-foot crocodile and getting it to bite on a glorified bathroom scale. "This is quite a spectacle, I call it 'bull-riding' for scientists," Erickson told NPR.
The researchers then took what they knew about crocodile jaw muscles and bite forces, and used that information to create detailed 3-D computer models that could reveal T. rex's chomping potential.
"T. rex was basically eclipsing the highest forces known for any living animal today," says Erickson.
He notes that the biggest living crocodiles currently hold the world record for measured bite forces, which his team found were about 3,700 pounds. Human bites come in at a paltry 200 pounds or so.
Unlike modern reptiles, T. rex could chew up enormous bones, to get the precious marrow within. That's thanks to the right combination of biting power plus blunt teeth that were serrated like steak knives, says Erickson. "It basically could slice through just about anything in its realm."
And it did — devouring everything from duck-billed dinosaurs to triceratops.
The researchers found that the tip of the dinosaur's teeth could exert pressures of 431,000 pounds per square inch.
[...]
If you wanted to rank the world's best biters in history, says Gignac, "T. rex would rank near the top but not at the top."
That honor would probably go to the largest crocodiles that ever existed, extinct beasts that were 35 or 40 feet long, he says. The researchers believe those could have had bite forces up around 18,000 pounds, over twice as high as what T. rex could do.

In free societies, monuments to tyranny have no place
The statue of Confederate President Jefferson Davis is prepared for removal in New Orleans on May 11.
May 17, 2017
Amid threats of violence and white-supremacist protests, the city of New Orleans has begun removing four Confederate monuments [ http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/torch-wielding-group-protests-confederate-statue-removal-47405488 ], among them statues of Robert E. Lee and Jefferson Davis, the supreme military and political leaders of the Southern rebellion against the United States.
The Confederate monuments are memorials to the vilest cause in American history. The South went to war for one reason above all [ http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2015/06/what-this-cruel-war-was-over/396482/ ]: to perpetuate the enslavement of black Americans. The dismantling of the statues is a long-overdue act of moral hygiene; it is appalling that they were ever erected in the first place. What other nation tolerates grand public memorials to its traitors?
Despite decades of blather about Southern “heritage,” the core message of the Confederate monuments — especially those erected after the collapse of Reconstruction — was never hard to decoct. They stood for bigotry and racial backlash, and for the willingness to take up arms in defense of human bondage. Naturally, Ku Klux Klan supporters like David Duke [ https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/post-nation/wp/2017/05/06/the-battle-of-new-orleans-david-duke-expects-confederate-statue-defenders-to-mass-on-sunday/ ] are among those protesting the statues’ removal.

New Orleans begins takedown of 3rd Confederate-era monument
May 17, 2017
Piece by piece, New Orleans' landscape is changing as city workers take down massive works of bronze and stone that once seemed immoveable in a region where some still cling to a Confederate legacy.
The city announced late Tuesday that it had begun the process of removing a statue of Confederate Gen. P.G.T. Beauregard — the third of four monuments city officials plan to take down. The news release came as police cordoned off the site and what appeared to be a large crane was moved into position.

Democrats divide on Bernie’s 2020 plans
Many are furious that Sanders appears to be running for president again, or planning to drag out his decision on whether to run.
05/16/17
Many top Democrats are furious that Bernie Sanders appears to be running for president again, or at least planning to drag out his decision long enough to freeze the race around him.
He’s frustrating alumni of his 2016 campaign, some of whom would like him to run again, by showing no interest in raising early money or locking down lower level staff — moves they say would indicate he recognizes the need for a different kind of campaign operation in 2020. Outside of his tighter-than-ever inner circle, friends and staffers who’d be happy to back him again say they rarely, if ever, speak to Sanders these days.
Sanders hasn’t made any decision, and he tends to dismiss the discussion about 2020 as dumb. He hasn't even fully committed to running for re-election to the Senate next year.
Weighing on him throughout it all and clouding his outlook, people close to him say, is the toll on his family from the ongoing FBI investigation into potential bank fraud at the small Vermont college where his wife was the president.
But the senator, who’ll be 79 the next time the New Hampshire primary rolls around, is continuing to put himself at the center of the conversation. He’s introduced a Medicare-for-all bill this week that he hopes will force others to sign on. He’s joining Ohio Gov. John Kasich for a CNN town hall tonight that’s being held on the evening of the Center for American Progress forward-looking Ideas Conference — an event Sanders wasn’t invited to. Some of his moves, like collecting names and email addresses via RSVPs to his “unity tour” with new Democratic National Committee chair Tom Perez for his Friends of Bernie Sanders group — a mailing list the DNC itself won’t have any access to — have alienated his allies on the left.
“The fact that Tom Perez has given Sanders a platform without Sanders genuinely agreeing to work toward ‘unity’ has made a mockery of the whole process and literally divided the party more than it was before the tour began. It has been a disaster,” said Markos Moulitsas, the founder of the influential liberal Daily Kos site. “Yes, Perez and company are clearly afraid of Sanders and his followers, but letting Sanders make a mockery of the party doesn’t exactly help it build in the long haul.”
"He's a constant reminder. He allows the healing that needs to take place to not take place,” said one longtime senior party official, who like others, remains too worried about appearing to oppose Sanders to speak on the record.
Former DNC chair Donna Brazile warned party leaders against relying on Sanders, unless they’re willing to give in on opening the party to more independents like he wants.
"He's not someone who we should go to, to build or rebuild or expand our party unless he's willing," she said.

fuagf -- yet Bernie, single-handedly and thoroughly dishonestly responsible for Trump in the White House, and always too 'good' to ever deign to actually be a Democrat, still thinks he is the one to tell us actual Democrats who we should be and what we should do
fuck you and that lying sack-of-shit slob of a wife you rode in on, Bernie, you cheap whore to your own ludicrous ego -- your final and complete fall from whatever may be left of your utterly undeserved 'grace' can't come a moment too soon
