Justice-elect Janet Protasiewicz to be sworn in Tuesday as next Wisconsin Supreme Court justice
Investiture will take place at state Capitol

MADISON, Wis. —
Justice-elect Judge Janet Protasiewicz will be sworn in Tuesday as Wisconsin's next state Supreme Court justice, a move that will shift the balance of the state's high court from a majority of conservative justices to liberal.
Protasiewicz, a Milwaukee County Circuit Court judge, beat former Justice Daniel Kelly in April.
Several high-profile cases are now expected before the state's high court, including Wisconsin's 1849 abortion ban, the state's legislative maps and election laws and results.
"We truly do have Democracy at issue here," Justice Rebecca Dallet told WISN 12 News in April, a member of the court's liberal block. "I expect that the 2024 election will come before the Wisconsin Supreme Court, just like the 2020 election did, and it's scary to think of just how slim a margin we upheld people's ballots in 2020."
Justice Brian Hagedorn, a member of the court's conservative block but a swing vote on several high-profile decisions, appeared Sunday on UPFRONT.
"I get there's a lot of political noise, and a lot of people want what they want out of the court, but I think it's incumbent on us to show we are going to act like a court and not just do whatever the political chatters want on either side," Hagedorn said.
Leprosy cases surging in Central Florida: CDC
BY OLAFIMIHAN OSHIN - 07/31/23 3:02 PM ET

Correction: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shared information about the surge of leprosy cases in Central Florida in a research letter. A previous version of this article contained incorrect information.
Health officials say that cases of leprosy, also known as Hansen’s disease, are surging in Central Florida.
In a research letter, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said that Central Florida has accounted for 81 percent of reported cases in the state and almost one-fifth of reported cases nationwide.
“Leprosy has been historically uncommon in the United States; incidence peaked around 1983, and a drastic reduction in the annual number of documented cases occurred from the 1980s through 2000,” the letter reads. “However, since then, reports demonstrate a gradual increase in the incidence of leprosy in the United States. The number of reported cases has more than doubled in the southeastern states over the last decade.”
Authorities said that several cases in Central Florida have demonstrated no clear evidence of zoonotic exposure or traditionally known risk factors. They also noted that they have reported a case of lepromatous leprosy in the area in a male resident without risk factors for known transmission routes.
Leprosy is a chronic infectious disease primarily affecting a patient’s skin and peripheral nervous system. It spreads through extended close contact with a patient who is untreated.
The known symptoms of leprosy include discolored skin patches, thick and dry skin, skin growths, the loss of eyebrows and eyelashes, muscle weakness or paralysis and enlarged nerves, according to CBS News. Serious symptoms, if the disease is not treated, can develop into blindness, ulcers on the bottom of the patient’s feet and paralysis and crippling of hands and feet.
According to the World Health Organization, medical officials report more than 200,000 cases of leprosy every year in more than 120 countries. The CDC states that about 150 people get infected with the disease in the U.S. annually.

Beverly Grimmett thought the kids magazines she saw stacked on a coworker’s desk this spring were perfectly innocent, until she picked one up.
“My stomach turned,” Grimmett said.
The guides were decorated in bright colors and cheerful cartoons, with titles like “The Kids Guide to Socialism,” “The Kids Guide to Our One Nation Under God,” and, finally, “The Kids Guide to the Truth About Climate Change.”
Grimmett, who works in construction project management at a six-person office in Norfolk, Virginia, had happened upon one of former Gov. Mike Huckabee’s educational ventures, a series called The Kids Guide from Ever Bright Media, the children’s publishing company he founded. The company launched its children’s guide to climate change this spring, and has spent thousands of dollars on TV and social media advertising that prominently features Huckabee himself. The guide argues that the climate crisis is not as dire as mainstream media would have you believe, but it does not list its authors or what their credentials might be. And though its title claims to present the “truth,” science educators and climate researchers have found the guide to be full of factual inaccuracies.
“It’s propaganda,” said Glenn Branch, deputy director of the National Center for Science Education (NCSE), a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting fact-based science education, including about evolution and climate change. “It’s highly slanted with a clear ideological message, and it’s very unreliable as a guide to climate change for kids.”

Turkey: The solution to unlocking the "grain corridor" may be found against Russia's wishes. It is reported that against the night of July 30, 3 civilian ships Ams1, Sahin 2 and Yilmaz Kaptan, having passed through the Turkish straits. Origin of these vessels: Israel, Greece and Turkey/Georgia. The destination via AIS was determined as Ukraine.
And already today, Ams1, spitting on Russian threats, enters the Ukrainian branch of the Danube. It is the first ship to break through the Russian blockade of the Black Sea since the bombing of Reni on July 25. Starting his journey from Ashdod, Israel, he openly advertised his destination as Ukraine and crossed the Black Sea on a direct course.
Ams1 is followed by four more vessels (plus Sealock and Afer) which have either anchored or will anchor in the Danube in the near future. American P8 anti-ship aircraft provide security. It is refueled directly in the sky of Romania. Additional information is provided by the Forte12 RQ-4 reconnaissance drone. Brave sailors. It seems that someone has figured out how to give Russians a lick. Congratulations!

Rep. Goldman (D-NY) recalls Devon Archer testimony about Joe Biden talking to Hunter Biden business associates:

Another Embarrassing Day for House Republicans in the Hunter Saga
Their much-hyped star witness Devon Archer testified that Joe never discussed business with Hunter.
Ron Filipkowski14 minutes ago
https://www.meidastouch.com/news/hunter-archer-goldman-biden
Rep. Dan Goldman left the deposition of House Oversight's star witness Devon Archer saying that at no time did he hear Hunter ever discuss any business dealings with his father.
The testimony of Archer was hyped by James Comer and Republicans on the House Oversight Committee for months. Finally, this was the "smoking gun" witness who supposedly was going to implicate Joe Biden in his son's business dealings overseas. Devon Archer was the man "in the room" with Hunter on a least 20 occasions where he spoke to his father on speaker phone. This was their moment when all the dots would be connected and Joe Biden would be impeached.
Except it was a total disaster for them.
Again.
Goldman said Archer testified that when Hunter would get Joe on the phone, they had "casual conversations" and never discussed business. "The witness was very consistent that none of those conversations had anything to do with any business dealings or transactions," Goldman said.
Of course, House Republicans will continue to lie and exaggerate Archer's testimony. New conspiracies will be born, as they are of every event in this never-ending saga. The American people will have a choice to make in the 2024 congressional elections, and will have to decide whether they want a majority that will spend the bulk of it's time, energy and resources on Hunter Biden, or the needs of the American people.
You've got that right. My daughter has over 20 yrs starting as a teller, now head of an auditing dept for a major financial institution, my wife same with over 30 yrs now leader in her division, experience in multiple departments, including auditing and compliance for one of another major financial institution.

The GOP just play on the ignorance, so they put it out there for dramatic look knowing full well that the SAR's alone don't mean diddly, but they can dangle the keys in front of the maga hats for effect of keeping the sheep heading into the slaughterhouse.
I'm all for comparing the SAR's from the traitor trump crime family. Of course the GOP will never do that willingly, it would reveal too much of their bs. For that matter, how about those maga GOPs in congress, lets get those revealed too.

Don't report and they will penalize you for every report not reported when they conduct audits.
And if you think you can structure deposits to be under $10K on a daily basis you'd be wrong since banks need the software to track them as well.

Leaders of the First Baptist Academy in Baytown ruled that Kristi Maris, a teacher at the school for 19 years, had breached a condition of employment requiring her to “act in a godly and moral fashion at work, on Facebook and in my community”.
Maris told ABC13 of Houston she agreed to the condition, but did not realize it prevented her attending a drag show, or sharing photographs or videos of it. In a Facebook post, she said the entertainment was “a blast”.
A co-worker who joined her at the show, hosted at Hamburger Mary’s, a popular drag venue and bar in downtown Houston, was also fired.
“I feel like we were treated like criminals,” Maris told the TV station.
“They’re entertainers. We were in disbelief. We still are. We were heartbroken. We had relationships with parents and the kids, and I didn’t even get to say goodbye to a lot of the kids.”
Maris said she was a devoted Christian and taught her students that God loved them all equally. “We should love everybody, and that’s what we’ve been teaching, but they’re expecting us not to do that,” she said.

Funny thing was said which I guess is somewhat true depending how one thinks about it, that if we were to go on the market history, that streak was followed by a 120 yr bull market with a few hiccups along the way. lol Personally I think there's a lot of irrational exuberance and over hyped expensive stock at this point that tends to create a harder correction. But what do I know, maybe 50-60 times earnings is going to be the new normal of cheap and undervalued. All depends on what your time strategy is I guess. For me and my age, I'm happy with most of my money in income and low risk and I'll just keep playing it by ear and having fun beating the market on just the volatility with the smaller portion.

INVESTIGATIONS
Corruption
Trump made at least $9.6 million from the Middle East while president
https://www.citizensforethics.org/reports-investigations/crew-investigations/trump-made-9-6-million-middle-east-income-while-president/
by Rebecca Jacobs

Donald Trump made at least $9.6 million from countries in the Middle East during his presidency, according to years of reporting and a CREW analysis of his tax returns. That means Trump pulled in at least six times his official presidential salary in side income from the Middle East alone during his time in office. The total is likely much higher, but public reporting only sheds light on the most high profile instances of profiteering, and he is only required to report certain types of income on his tax returns.
After Trump was elected president, he made the unprecedented decision not to divest from his business interests, and remained very much involved in the Trump Organization, creating an endless number of conflicts of interest by blurring the lines between the government and his businesses. The profiteering paid off, and Trump raked in tens of millions from international business interests during his time in office.
Trump and his allies in Congress frequently visited and held events at his clubs, hotels and golf courses, advertising to those looking to influence the government that Trump properties were open for business. Foreign governments and officials in particular took advantage of the open opportunity to ingratiate themselves with the president. At an event for foreign diplomats at the Trump International Hotel in D.C., held shortly after Trump was elected, one diplomat told the Washington Post, “Why wouldn’t I stay at his hotel blocks from the White House, so I can tell the new president, ‘I love your new hotel!’” Multiple other diplomats echoed this sentiment.
Officials from the Middle East in particular took this advice, with officials from countries including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Turkey taking conspicuous measures to curry favor with the president.
Saudi Arabia
From December 2016 through February of 2017, Saudi government lobbyists reserved blocks of rooms at Trump’s D.C. hotel, “paying for an estimated 500 nights at the luxury hotel in just three months,” and spending at least $270,000 at the property in total. Trump continued to benefit from Saudi business in office. When the Saudi Crown Prince visited New York in 2018, several members of his entourage stayed at the Trump International Hotel in Manhattan. Earnings from the room rentals caused revenue to spike 13 percent, putting the hotel “back in the black” after two years of decline. Weeks before the murder of Washington Post contributing columnist Jamal Khashoggi by agents of the Saudi government, Trump’s business partner in Indonesia signed an agreement for a Saudi-backed company to work on a development with Trump-branded elements. Asked about the deal, “an official with the Saudi-tied firm also said they expect to be involved in the development of a different Trump-branded project in the future.” Trump returned the favor, shielding Saudi leaders from criticism after Khashoggi’s murder and going so far as to allege Khashoggi was tied to terrorist groups.
Qatar
After several Middle Eastern countries cut diplomatic ties with Qatar for allegedly backing terrorists, Qatar spent hundreds of thousands on lobbying to put itself back into Trump and the U.S.’s good graces. They purchased a $6.5 million condo in Trump World Tower, and started renting space in the “most valuable asset” in Trump’s portfolio, a San Francisco building he co-owns, directing $125,000 per year in rent to the president. After Qatar finished renovations in February 2018, the office sat completely vacant. In April 2018 he welcomed the Emir of Qatar to the Oval Office and praised the country for fighting against extremism.
United Arab Emirates
Trump raked in money from the United Arab Emirates through his Dubai golf course amid concerns about corruption and human rights abuses in the country. Before taking office, Trump was paid as much as $10 million in royalties from the golf course and other projects in Dubai. On top of that, the U.A.E. spent up to $10 thousand per night for rooms at Trump’s D.C. hotel from late 2017 to mid 2018. Trump acted favorably to the U.A.E. in many ways during this time, from his administration’s “maximum pressure” agenda against U.A.E. adversary Iran to supporting a $23 billion arms deal with Abu Dhabi in 2020.
Turkey
In 2017 and 2019 groups with ties to the Turkish government held four events at Trump properties and Turkish officials made 15 visits to the Trump Hotel in D.C., where they spent up to $10,000 per night on rooms. Around the same time, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan pressured Trump to shut down an investigation into sanctions violations by a state-owned Turkish bank. DOJ officials attempted to quash the investigation on the orders of Trump, though it ultimately proceeded.
Kuwait
The Embassy of Kuwait hosted three independence day parties at the D.C. hotel. In turn, Trump bestowed a “top U.S. honor” to Kuwait’s ruling emir.
“It's big time and it's big-time money. It's unlimited money. They love golf and the Saudis have done a fantastic job.”
Trump has been anything but shy about how much he appreciates the business. As Trump bragged about his ties with the Saudis, “They buy apartments from me. They spend $40 million, $50 million… Am I supposed to dislike them? I like them very much.” That’s held true after Trump’s presidency: During a Saudi-backed LIV golf league tournament last year at Trump’s Doral golf club in Miami, Trump said of LIV, “It’s big time and it’s big-time money. It’s unlimited money. They love golf and the Saudis have done a fantastic job.” LIV golf recently announced its $50 million championship would move from Jeddah to Trump’s Doral golf club in Miami.
The $9.6 million that we know Trump made from Middle Eastern countries during his presidency is likely just the tip of the iceberg. CREW tracked conflicts of interest involving multiple countries that are not even present on his tax returns. For example, officials from Iraq, Oman and Yemen made visits to Trump properties while he was president. Because we don’t know the total cost for these visits, we did not include them in the tally.
What we do know is that becoming president was Trump’s best business decision, and his tax returns show how great the office was for his bottom line. As the 2024 election creeps closer, foreign interests including those in the Middle East are already buying access to Trump and pouring money into his pockets.
They are just trying to time it to pair it with another trump indictment they know is coming. Barrel scrapings is all they've got, so they're playing it the best they can. Projection and disinformation wars is the only game they know and all one can expect. They don't need much to keep their insurrectionists and extremist base mind's occupied.
Seems like a distinct possibility that we will learn today that the Trump defense team has presented appeal to DOJ re the 1/6 charges; and then upon the rejection of that appeal, Jack Smith will seek the indictment tomorrow or Thursday at the latest in DC. https://t.co/WpiLF8gXG7

Geez, it's rated PG-13, you know, the two words almost forgotten or what they mean, Parental Guidance. The rating itself states that it's not meant for younger children. Parents Need to Know
Even the shortest of descriptions on different sites like, "Barbie suffers a crisis that leads her to question her world and her existence", tells a parent that it just might be beyond the years of a younger child's comprehension. Of course that's probably over the heads of the trumpian maga hats too, so I guess that might be where a lot of the problem lies.
Here's one of the better summaries, definitely not describing "Finding Nemo" or taking adventures with "Winni the Pooh". Doesn't even come close to "Frozen" which was also rated PG without the 13 added, but became a hit with the kiddies and was even top rated for taking toddlers. It was very relatable to even the very young.
Parents need to know that writer-director Greta Gerwig's all-star take on Barbie has a sophisticated message about feminism and the patriarchy (and, consequently, a screenplay that will likely go over younger kids' heads). The movie follows "Stereotypical Barbie" (Margot Robbie) and her handsome but insecure (boy)friend, Ken (Ryan Gosling), as they venture into the human world and discover the shocking-to-them truth that Barbie dolls didn't actually solve the problems of sexism and patriarchal control. While there's no sex in the movie (the Barbies and Kens are frank about not having genitals), Kens are shown shirtless, Barbies get catcalled, and there are suggestive references to the dolls' bodies -- including Ken's "nude bulge" -- and how a male-dominated society expects women to be ornamental and helpful. There's a bleeped use of "motherf--" (plus "crap," "shut up," "oh my God," etc.), a couple of big brawls with silly weapons, slapstick chases, beer drinking, and near-constant mentions of Barbie-maker Mattel. Characters demonstrate empathy and perseverance, and Barbieland is populated by a diverse group of Barbies and Kens from a range of body sizes, disability, gender, and racial and ethnic backgrounds.
So the bible thumpers and maga hats better get out their crosses, blindfolds, fake rage, and holy water. There's a new Barbie in town and she's wide awake. Definitely not coming for the children though.
Fully agree that honor actually means something to Garland and Smith, and state AJs like Willis for that matter. I don't think Barr cares so much about redemption, more about relevance.
Some of my point, the abundance of caution and intent of not doing things anywhere near nefarious or politically favorable to any party (blind justice) and for DOJ to remain truly independent fighting the crimes alone, creates a favor for the criminal side that has to be overcome. Evil and criminal nature has always used the honor, compassion, values of what's right and wrong, and such in the good as a weakness in the good and attack using that perceived weakness against them.
We've seen this throughout history, in Putin and his wars, traitor trump, cyber warfare, the grifters, the frauds, criminals, on and on. Now we're seeing the GOP as with the forementioned doing the same with their constant attacks using the fact that the other side won't use any of the criminality, terror, and nefarious mayhem that the GOP uses. Just making as much difficulty as they can against what will expose their nefarious means.
Still doesn't take away the fact of cooperation between the fed AJ and state AJs. That's probably been there forever, but this level of just plain evil for power that the GOP party uses has come about with trump. Never going to end well for us if they continue to gain or win.
Technically maybe true, but if you think that there isn't communications and agreements between all prosecutors state, fed, county and DOJ specifically with the political arena, and Garland doesn't have his say or notifications, I've got some rolling hills estates in Cali to sell you real cheap.
What the average public knows or believes is quite far from the reality of it. Traitor trump and the GOP have really intensified the whole mess between fed and state laws, red lines in the laws have been trampled on so much or ignored they've turned a dull grey or completely non existent. Witnesses, evidence, victims, resources, the judges, and the political environment are so intersecting now it's impossible to have any complete separations.
Also I know for a fact that those memos and/or discussions of both Barr's and Garlands made their way all the way down the line. Not going to give links or anything, some of which has been publicized in not so direct terms over the years, but common sense and the overall view of the environment that we are in now can give one a general confirmation.
Don't even want to get into how much "say" and involvement Barr had in state and other things he had no business or technical legal control over, but yet he did.
The GOP harps on about the DOJ intentional attacks on them and traitor trump, but in reality Garland's been on the extreme other side of the pendulum in attempting to show independence and some resemblance of the DOJ's morality and true job. Quite the opposite from the previous US AJ and Garland's intent and efforts are something the GOP is well aware of and uses that fact to create as many hurdles as they can for Garland. Many in the lower justice systems feel favor is given to the GOP side governed by trump, some of which has been valid concerns. Definitely the caution and intent have not favored our side short term anyway, hopefully our democracy as we know it will be favored in the very long term. Time is Traitor trumps main, and other than the GOP defense dream team, only weapon and defense. Time he has been abundantly given and keeps being given (although it seems it have been diminished somewhat).
Not that Garland doesn't have the hardest and most involved job in our history imo, fighting the most powerful political criminal forces, massive number of insurrectionists and political enemies, right wing extremists interloping in gov and law enforcement, and the GOP's misinformation wars, to name a few. With many cases, both state and federal, depends on politically corrupt judges preferred interpretations of the "law" all the way into our GOP packed US Supreme Court. This is on top of all the normal everyday happenings that go on every day in our legal system.
Given the extraordinary amount of time and resources that it is taking for Garland to get through all this crime and trying to give caution (and time) to the political appearance of the whole thing, he's a damn super hero. Right now I'm glad he wasn't confirmed in the Supreme Court, might be the only person that can and will do the job he has now. Why the GOP wants to eliminate those resources by defunding and taking the DOJ's time (and ours) on just bs. Garland is trying to gather up the criminal trash to take out. So many of the GOP is wallowing in that trash heap, they are scared that they might end up out on the curb. So they project and protest and attack the garbage collector and disable the truck. It's also why the DOJ is connected to everything against trump or other political figures, AJ has to be.
This is a very dangerous and high level game that being played out. There's a modern day civil war going on right now within our political leadership, our justice system, and within the American people that's above the extreme maga gun nuts and culture wars we see (they and that scene are just tools and weapons that's being used by the GOP to keep our attention on).
Strategy, timing, plans, shared resources, and procedures have to be coordinated and agreed upon, however one might interpret any laws or divisions between fed and state. Without it, it's just dead man walking.
Believe or not, he does have a say, just the language may be a little different, for this is the way.
Standing policy of the DOJ is that all investigations into or cases involving any political figures must be communicated, approved and cleared by Garland first. That was continuance of Barr's rules before the Biden administration. Garland just doubled down on it with some official memos last year if I remember right. So I'm sure discussions of what, when, and where take place on a regular basis between the DOJ and prosecutors/AJs.

Funny stuff;
Moskowitz: When are you coming to take my gas stove? Will I get a four hour window like when Comcast comes to my house? I just want to be home when it happens because I have a dog and I don’t want him to be let out by accident pic.twitter.com/Xoey986M28

This is the definition of compound, concurrent heat extremes! What you're looking at is the pressure pattern & wind flow at the 500mb level (5600 m, 18K ft). This is why Death Valley hit 129, the Med may hit 118, Iran heat index 152F and China hit an all-time heat record of 126. pic.twitter.com/qlXnoaAMmq

A little added discussion on the workers vs bosses on hybrid work schedules out of the WSJ yesterday. The hours that bookend the traditional close of business have become a dead zone at many companies, but employees aren’t just blowing off work to relax for the rest of the day. Workers say the 4-6 p.m. flex time they use to take a turn in the kids’ carpool, hit the gym or beat traffic often requires a third shift at night to finish the day’s tasks. They resent it when leaders assume they aren’t putting in eight or more hours of work, and they’re loath to relinquish the freedom to set their own schedules.

Despite the return of teeth-grinding commutes and overpriced lunches, lots of workers are sticking with the Covid-era habit of clocking out early and making it up later.
Some interesting figures. Seems like back to the office work is leveling off, probably never getting back to before Covid. Times they are a changing.

I'm not getting what that question is for. It's all about the percentage, it's the main number that one has to pay attention to. Doesn't matter what price the widget goes for, it's about how much percent over cost, not the dollar gain. Everyone works with a different financial trading or investing worth with different risk tolerances of how much percentage of their total they want to risk for any particular bet. The percentage over or under of whatever dollar amount spent is what you need to look at.
What was your dollar return on those puts?

Looks like John Quincy Adams name comes up again, well his vice president did anyway. Somebody go tell Josh Hawley, there's got to be a quote somewhere.

Harris matches record for tiebreaking Senate votes as vice president

Vice President Kamala Harris Wednesday matched the record for casting the most tiebreaking votes of any vice president in Senate history.
Harris broke a 50-50 tie on a vote to advance the nomination of Kalpana Kotagal to serve as a member of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, bringing her total of tiebreaking votes cast as vice president to 31.
That matches the record set by Sen. John C. Calhoun, a Democratic-Republican and an avowed proponent of states’ rights and slavery, who served as vice president to John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson from 1825 to 1832.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) hailed Harris’s accomplishment on the floor Wednesday evening.
“I want to note that this is a history-making moment for the United States Senate,” he said. “When it’s mattered most, Vice President Harris has provided the decisive vote on some of the most historic bills of modern times, from the American Rescue Plan to the Inflation Reduction Act, to so many federal judges who now preside and provide balance on the federal bench.
“She’s carried out her duties with supreme excellence,” he added.
As vice president, Harris also serves as president of the Senate, giving her the authority to break deadlocks on the Senate floor.
She voted on June 21 to break a 50-50 tie on advancing Natasha Merle’s nomination to serve as a judge for the Eastern District of New York and a 48-48 tie on confirming Araceli Martinez-Olguin to serve as a judge for the North District of California.
Having one heck of a Xmas party. ....the purpose of each payment is listed as either “Christmas party”, “Thomas Christmas Party”, “CT Christmas Party” or “CT Xmas party”, in an apparent reference to the justice’s initials. Patrick Strawbridge, a partner at Consovoy McCarthy who recently successfully argued that affirmative action violated the US constitution; Kate Todd, who served as White House deputy counsel under Donald Trump at the time of the payment and is now a managing party of Ellis George Cipollone’s law office; Elbert Lin, the former solicitor general of West Virginia who played a key role in a supreme court case that limited the Environmental Protection Agency’s ability to regulate greenhouse gas emissions; and Brian Schmalzbach, a partner at McGuire Woods who has argued multiple cases before the supreme court.

Florida is not free.
Florida has become the U.S. inflation hotspot, with more than 2.5 million residents of the Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach area living with a 9 percent inflation rate for the 12 months ending in April. Labor shortages are so severe in Florida the state is now hiring people without any teaching credentials to be teachers.
Florida reportedly lost millions of dollars of federal energy funding, as Governor Ron DeSantis quietly rejected the assistance.
What Happened: The funding, a majority of which was earmarked for energy-efficiency rebates, DeSantis rejected amounted to $377 million, Bloomberg reported, citing blogsite Capitolist, which has ties with state utility Florida Power & Light Co.
Some of the funding was also meant for electrification as part of the Inflation Reduction Act and money from the bipartisan infrastructure legislation that became law in 2021, the report said.
Florida's Department of Agriculture and Consumer Service's Office of Energy reportedly noted that Energy Department that it was “respectfully” withdrawing applications for the funds. This followed DeSantis issuing a one-line veto, rejecting a $5 million grant for the state to set up programs to distribute the rebates.
