KANSAS CITY — The Upcycled Food Association launched its Upcycled Certification mark last June. By May of this year, the mark was on the labels of over 200 products being sold in the United States, preventing 840 million lbs of food waste every year, said Turner Wyatt, chief executive officer and co-founder of the UFA.
“Historically speaking, looking back, it’ll totally make sense why upcycled foods are having such a moment right now and why it’s taking off,” he said.

The numbers should increase.
“There is something like 350 or 400 products that are (in the process of) being certified right now,” Mr. Wyatt said. “They are in the pipeline. It’s definitely growing very fast.”
Globally, about $1 trillion per year of food is wasted or lost, according to the association, which was founded in 2019. Food waste refers to consumers, retail stores or foodservice locations throwing away food. Manufacturers are responsible for food loss, which happens between the harvest and the retail stores or foodservice locations.
The association, a third-party certification program based in Greenwood Village, Colo., focuses on attracting investments to the upcycled industry, improving the upcycled business network, improving the upcycled supply chain and increasing consumer demand for upcycled products.
Before launching Upcycled Certified, the association first needed a definition for upcycled. A team of experts from Harvard Law School, Drexel University, the World Wildlife Fund, the Natural Resources Defense Council, ReFED and others defined upcycled food in 2020 for use in policy, research and other areas: Upcycled foods use ingredients that otherwise would not have gone to human consumption, are procured and produced using verifiable supply chains, and have a positive impact on the environment.
The baking industry has a presence in Upcycled Certified. The Kroger Co., Cincinnati, released a line of Upcycled Certified baking mixes under its Simple Truth brand. ReGrained, San Francisco, uses “spent” grain from brewing to create baking mixes. EverGrain Ingredients, St. Louis, takes “spent” grain from AB InBev to make EverPro barley isolates, which may be used in snacks, spreads, shakes, smoothies, plant-based milk alternatives, coffee and tea, and EverVita barley ingredients, which may be used in bread, cakes, muffins, cookies, biscuits, pizza crusts, pastas, noodles, bars and snacks.
Puris, Minneapolis, originally offered pea protein ingredients. Pea is 58% starch and 23% protein.
“This meant there was a valuable carbohydrate stream coming through our plant that we did not know how to capture,” said Anna Gustafson, nutrition and application scientist, in a May 12 webinar.
Puris developed a way to isolate the starch from the protein and now offers Upcycled Certified pea starch for use in applications such as pasta and gluten-free baked foods as well as gummies, confectionery items, batters, breadings, beverages, sauces, spreads and dips.
“People have been upcycling things for millennia,” she said. “If they were hunting, they would often use the hide for clothing and the fur for insulation in their clothes. It’s not a new concept at all. However, the upcycled certification actually puts quality measures in place.”
The UFA is hitting the trade show circuit this year to make industry aware of its effort to reduce food waste. The association had a booth at Natural Products Expo West held in Anaheim, Calif., in March.
“Expo West was a big deal for us because we got to show (retailers) for the first time, ‘Look, we have all these great products that you could be carrying and could be helping you accomplish your own sustainability goals,’” Mr. Wyatt said.
The UFA also plans to have a presence at events such as the Institute of Food Technologists’ annual meeting and exposition in Chicago in July and SupplySide West in Las Vegas in October.
Less than 10% of consumers know what upcycled products are.
“Right now, there’s a huge gap in the consumer education itself,” Mr. Wyatt said. “So we have a ton of education to do.”
Consumers generally are favorable when they find out what upcycling means.
I think food waste is one of those special places where everyone agrees,” Mr. Wyatt said.

Another major gainer on June 30th is RIBT stock. At EOD, shares of RIBT had shot up by more than 29% and over 3% in after hours respectively. This sizable gain brings RIBT stock to over $0.69 which adds to its six month gain of over 75%.
So, why are shares of RIBT stock shooting up right now? The most recent news from the company came on June 15th. On June 15th, it announced that it would pursue UFA up cycled certification to help its commitment to sustainable practices. This is a big deal and one that investors are excited about right now.
“Upcycle certification is an important step for RiceBran to gain traction with impact-focused consumers, demonstrating that not only is our stabilized rice bran a healthy, hypoallergenic, non-GMO alternative, but an ingredient that materially reduces food waste. Without our proprietary processes, rice bran would be little more than animal feed, with a significant portion wasted.”

$RIBT RiceBran Technologies Pursues UFA Upcycled Certification, Reinforcing Commitment to Sustainable Manufacturing Practices and Positively Impacting the Environment
https://finance.yahoo.com/news/ricebran-technologies-pursues-ufa-upcycled-120000340.html
RiceBran Technologies (NASDAQ:RIBT) a global leader in the development and manufacture of nutritional and functional ingredients derived from rice and other small and ancient grains for human food, nutraceutical, pet care and equine feed applications, today announced that the Company is pursuing upcycle certification from the Upcycled Food Association.
The UFA Upcycled Certified™ Program is the world's first third-party certification program for upcycled food ingredients and products. The flagship of the Program is the on-package mark, which helps retailers feature upcycled products on shelf, and indicates to consumers which products are Upcycled Certified™, providing the opportunity to prevent food waste with every purchase. The mark highlights upcycled ingredients and products procured and produced with surplus food or food by-products from manufacturing, that use verifiable supply chains and have a positive impact on the environment.
RiceBran's Stabilized Rice Bran (SRB) has always been an upcycled product. RiceBran's proprietary processes preserve the nutritive value of rice bran in a stabilized format by giving it a sufficient shelf-life to make it a compelling ingredient to replace soy, corn, and wheat alternatives across a wide range of applications for human and animal consumption. Before RiceBran Technologies' stabilization processes rice bran could only be used as a low-value animal feed and was often discarded.
"Upcycle certification is an important step for RiceBran to gain traction with impact-focused consumers, demonstrating that not only is our stabilized rice bran a healthy, hypoallergenic, non-GMO alternative, but an ingredient that materially reduces food waste," said RiceBran Chairman Peter Bradley. "Without our proprietary processes, rice bran would be little more than animal feed, with a significant portion wasted. By taking this waste and turning it into wellness, we provide significant added value to the entire supply chain, from farmers to retailers, creating a regionally sourced, healthy option where one did not previously exist."
"This certification will create additional incentives to farmers to adopt sustainable practices, critical to a healthy environment and a healthy economy," said Sherry Rhoads, Vice President Compliance, Regulatory and External Affairs at RiceBran Technologies. "When we achieve UFA certification, it will help food manufacturers to communicate the important concept of food waste mitigation to customers. Increasingly, consumers are looking for sustainable, natural, and healthy foods, and RiceBran Technologies is uniquely poised to meet this demand."
Upcycled Food Association debuts Upcycled Certified seal
(actually a year old) RIBT just applied for it.
https://www.foodbeverageinsider.com/sustainability/upcycled-food-association-debuts-upcycled-certified-seal
The first mark certifying upcycled food in products, which will appear on upcycled products as early as August 2021, gives consumers a crucial tool to address urgent climate and environmental crises through purchasing power.
The Upcycled Food Association (UFA) introduced a new certification mark, providing consumers for the first time with clear guidance about the presence of upcycled food ingredients in food, beverages, cosmetics, pet food, personal care products, household cleaners and dietary supplements.
UFA is a non-profit focused on reducing food waste by growing the upcycled food economy. It was created in 2019 by upcycled food companies themselves, who recognized the power of collaboration in growing a successful food category and environmental movement.
According to Project Drawdown, eliminating food waste is the single-most effective act people can take to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the seal offers simple and concrete steps toward mitigating climate change.
“The upcycled certification seal is transformative for centralizing the messaging around upcycled food. We want consumers to see the mark and immediately understand not only what upcycled food is, but more importantly, the impact upcycled food has from a climate perspective,” said Caroline Cotto, UFA board president. “Purchasing upcycled food puts the power back into the hands of consumers to make a tangible reduction in global food loss.”
Research shows that consumers already are keen to reduce food waste. A 2021 study published in the journal Food and Nutrition Sciences shows that 80% of consumers, once educated about upcycled foods, say they would seek upcycled food purchases. Unfortunately, only 10% of consumers are familiar with upcycled food products. One goal of the seal is to dramatically expand awareness about upcycled food—what it is, and why its presence in products matters for the environment and climate.
“Food waste accounts for 6% of all human-caused greenhouse gases. Mitigating it counts as the single-most productive thing people can do to dial-back climate change,” said UFA co-founder and CEO Turner Wyatt. “In addition, businesses around the world lose $1 trillion a year to food waste. This seal and the certification program backing it will simultaneously help solve the food-waste problem while saving businesses money. It also nurtures the creation of new businesses revolving around upcycled foods. Everybody wins.”
The upcycled food industry has enormous economic potential. In 2019 Future Market Insights estimated the current value of the upcycled food industry at $46 billion, with a predicted 5% compound annual growth rate. With a broad consumer education campaign about the seal and food waste, the UFA hopes to quickly double the industry’s growth rate. Doing so could prevent more than 8.8 billion pounds of food waste and 28 billion pounds of carbon emissions by 2030, according to the UFA.
The UFA turned to mission-aligned branding agency Modern Species for the crafting of the seal. Both the UFA and Modern Species are members of 1% for the Planet; Modern Species used its annual contribution to the fund to donate its seal-crafting services to the UFA.
Brands can choose from a horizontal or vertical mark based on what fits best on a given product's package.
Additionally, Drexel University and food and beverage design and development firm Mattson contributed robust consumer research to the creation of the seal. Drexel’s consumer research tested the various mark designs that led to the final seal. Mattson’s research showed more than 50% of consumers had increased intent to buy Upcycled Certified foods when the mark was on packaging, already ranking better than other product certifications on the market.
The seal follows more than ome year of intense collaboration between multiple stakeholders to develop the Upcycled Certification Standard. The Standard offers a rigorous set of rules establishing definitions for upcycled ingredients and products, protocols for incorporating them into products, and the ability for certified companies to use the new consumer-facing upcycled food seal on products.
The Upcycled Certification Program is the world’s only third-party certification program for upcycled food ingredients and products. The Program’s intentions are strengthened by the credibility of the Upcycled Certification Standard and the expertise of the third-party certifier, Where Food Comes From. Open enrollment to apply for certification is slated to begin in June 2021.
“If the UFA is the landmark of the upcycled food movement, we intend this new logo to be our flag,” said Dan Kurzrock, co-founder and executive board officer of UFA and the Upcycled Food Association. “We can’t wait for certified products and ingredients around the world to fly it at full mast soon.”

Kellogg Plans to Split Into 3 Companies.
https://www.foxbusiness.com/markets/kellogg-split-three-companies
Kellogg Company announced Tuesday that it will separate its North American cereal and plant-based foods businesses into three independent public companies.
The three companies, which are being separated via tax-free spin-offs – include "Global Snacking Co.," "North America Cereal Co." and "Plant Co." The names of the companies will be determined at a later date.
Global Snacking Co. will be a "leading company in global snacking, international cereal and noodles and North America frozen breakfast," with estimated 2021 net sales of $11.4 billion.
Nearly 60% of its net sales come from global snacks, less than a quarter come from cereal in international markets, approximately 10% come from noodles in Africa and less than 10% from frozen breakfast and the Eggo brand.
Kellogg said the business would expand profit margins and is expected to be a higher-growth company than the current company, still under the leadership of CEO Steve Cahillane.
"Kellogg has been on a successful journey of transformation to enhance performance and increase long-term shareowner value. This has included re-shaping our portfolio, and today's announcement is the next step in that transformation," Cahillane said in a statement. "These businesses all have significant standalone potential, and an enhanced focus will enable them to better direct their resources toward their distinct strategic priorities. In turn, each business is expected to create more value for all stakeholders, and each is well positioned to build a new era of innovation and growth."
It will be focused on the restoration of inventory, profit margins and share position following 2021 supply disruptions.
Kellogg said it would generate stable net sales over time and is comprised of brands like Kellogg's, Frosted Flakes, Froot Loops, Mini-Wheats, Special K, Raisin Bran, Rice Krispies, Corn Flakes, Kashi and Bear Naked.
Plant Co. recorded $340 million in sales in 2021, and Kellogg said it would explore strategic alternatives with the company, including a possible sale.
hotos)
The independent business is expected to accelerate net sales growth over time and is anchored by the MoringStar Farms brand.
North America Cereal Co. and Plant Co. will both remain headquartered in Battle Creek, Michigan. Global Snacking Co. will maintain dual campuses in Battle Creek and Chicago, Illinois, with its corporate headquarters located in Chicago.
Kellogg said it believes now is the right time to split the businesses in order for them to pursue particular strategic priorities.
Independently, it said the three companies would be better positioned to execute with "increased agility and operation flexibility," "realize improved outlooks for profitable growth" and "shape distinctive corporate cultures."

Sad to say, IMO the PGA is doomed and will be forced into a "One World League". Same trend as in everything else going on in the world right now.
Got to be the closest 4 in a while, Congrats Hawkeye. Anybody ask for a recount yet,
Thanks gfp. I was researching how "filled gaps" do after they fill the gap. Based on the close candle, not the tail it had not filled the 11/21 gap and that $4.99 resistance in several places in 2021 and now a bull flag with that $4.99 upper resistance.
I would say buy on a close above $4.99, but watch it do that then 2 days later crash, lol.
SURG is the only stock outside of RIBT I have posted on in months, and you saw it. And I should have posted it there, sorry about that. You are a good guy and deserve my respect.

RIBT has a gap to fill at $2.08 back from 11/19. So I am checking to see percentages of what happens after it fills. Recent gaps, like 4 months or less, no clear help. And gaps over 4 months that fill are too few so far in my search to make any determination.
I want to see how spikes do after day 1,2,3 or such. Hoping RIBT gets a spike to like $3,$4 , lol. Check out the other 3 stocks charts on this guys list below, HUSA, NINE, IMPP--- Yes, I am a dreamer.>>>

$RIBT has another Golden Cross, the 100 day MA went above the 200.

$RIBT If we draw new channel lines for the May and June only, the BOTTOM of the channel is at $1.10 at the end of July, top at about $1.40. It will be fun if this new parallel channel holds as it would be a newly formed STEEPER channel.

World Grain RIBT story 6/17
Not new news as this was in a previous RIBT PR, but nice publicity.

TOMBALL, TEXAS, US — RiceBran Technologies earlier this month began a capacity expansion project at its core stabilized rice bran (SRB) facility in Mermentau, Louisiana, US. According to the company, the added capacity will allow RiceBran to meet growing demand for North American-sourced ingredients for the companion animal market.
As part of the expansion, RiceBran said it will add a fifth extruder at the Mermentau facility. The company said it is repurposing equipment from one of its other facilities, which is helping to keep costs down.

In addition, RiceBran has completed remediation of its warehouse and distribution facility in Lake Charles, Louisiana, US. The Lake Charles facility had been damaged by Hurricane Laura in August 2020. The remediation of the Lake Charles facility was funded entirely by insurance proceeds, RiceBran said.
“These upgrades provide important redundancy and will allow our rice bran stabilizing facility in Mermentau to match the full capacity of our supply partner, who in turn has made investments over the past two years to minimize historical seasonal downtime,” said Garry Primeaux, core-SRB business lead at RiceBran. “Together, with the remediation and enhancement of Lake Charles, these factors add significant overall capacity to our Louisiana operations, ensuring that we will be able to meet the rapidly growing demands of new and existing customers the companion animal market, with only a modest capital investment.”
Peter Bradley, chairman of RiceBran, added, “The companion animal market is experiencing tremendous growth due to the high volume of people that acquired animal companions during the COVID epidemic. This growth has been further accelerated by the popularity of companion animals in higher-demographic households, and these new owners’ desire to feed their pets healthy and natural products. Combined, these factors are driving a structural shift in the industry toward stabilized rice bran ingredients, and we are able to respond. This relatively modest investment at Mermentau, along with the remediation and enhancement of our Lake Charles facility, provides RiceBran with a unique opportunity to capitalize on the current macro-environment.”
