Slate, Micro....remember
the issue with external FDEs is NOT solved YET. As an external drive the FDE would act like a normal drive despite the onthefly encryption. Even ETDM has no capabilities for USB devices yet.

KeV....without Waves Preboot authentication the drive acts like a normal drive. The OS starts and you get your OS Login. Sure the data on the disc (PW for OS) is encrypted but everyone has access to the encrypted data and can try to decrypt. It doesn´t make sense to use the drive without a preboot authentication (ETDM at least)
Further it makes no sense to use the drive without the key management in ETS, since your data is lost, if you forget the password.

SEAGATE, TAROX, WAVE SYSTEMS AND ICT ECONOMIC IMPACT PRESENTED
COMPLETE SOLUTIONS FOR NOTEBOOK SECURITY
MANAGEMENT REGAINS CONTROL OF NOTEBOOKS
http://www.ict-economic-impact.com/layer2/CeBIT_2007_Announcement.pdf
Tarox Lightpad series with latest hardware and software security concept
Perfect power-off protection for notebooks thanks to Seagate hard disks with
integrated encryption
Complete power-on protection via built-in security hardware and the Wave
Systems Embassy Trust Suite
Wave Systems Embassy servers provide a complete security infrastructure
straight out of the box
Frankfurt, March 26, 2007: Seagate Technology (NYSE:STX) presented a revolutionary
complete solution for notebook security with Tarox, Wave Systems Corp.
(NASDAQ:WAVX) and ICT Economic Impact at CeBIT 2007. Tarox, a leading supplier of
complete systems, has integrated Seagate's new 2.5-inch Momentus 5400 FDE.2
security hard drive into its new notebook series. Thanks to perpendicular recording
technology, the Momentus 5400 FDE.2 is available in capacities of up to 160 gigabytes
and is equipped with a fast serial ATA 3.0 Gbit/s interface. This series is the first of its
kind to comprehensively and economically meet the security needs of both the public and
private sectors. All security functions are completely integrated into the hardware.
The Embassy Trust Suite from Wave Systems controls all the
security functions of the PC client from initialization of the platform, backing up all keys
and passwords, restoring the platforms in the event of damage, and implementing
centralized security guidelines through to making entries in the log-files to preserve
evidence. With Wave Systems Embassy servers, notebooks and desktops are managed
uniformly from a central location. This makes it possible to set up a security
infrastructure for PC clients straight out of the box.

Seagate's Momentus 5400 FDE.2, the first fully encrypted notebook hard drive, provides
a simple and cost-effective way to prevent unauthorized access to computer data at rest
— even if the system or hard drive is lost, stolen, retired, or sold. The 2.5-inch hard
drive, which spins at 5400 rpm and comes equipped with hardware-based full disk
encryption, provides significantly better protection than conventional encryption
approaches since all cryptographic operations and access controls are carried out within
the hard drive. What's more, the security of the system can't be compromised by user
error.
The Seagate Momentus 5400 FDE.2 utilizes Seagate's DriveTrust technology. With
DriveTrust, security features are integrated directly in the hard drive. This makes the
technology as simple and cost-effective to use as the hard drive itself. DriveTrust
provides a foundation for the hard drive to carry out security tasks such as
authenticating platforms, allocating secure partitions, processing electronic signatures,
and more.
Wave Systems Embassy Trust Suite handles the administration of the DriveTrust drive.
The Wave Systems Embassy Security Center’s Trusted Drive Manager software provides
user-friendly setup and configuration wizards for the Momentus 5400 FDE.2. The Trusted
Drive Manager allows administrators or users to easily generate and backup passwords,
monitor hard drives, and implement uncompromisable security policies. For access to the
data stored on the drive, users authenticate themselves with a password, certificate,
smartcard, or the Tarox Lightpad's integrated fingerprint reader.
No time-consuming initialization or configuration of the encrypted hard drive is required.
If necessary, administrators are able to make it impossible to access all data in just
seconds by deleting the key. This allows hard rives to be immediately repurposed or
retired without any costs being incurred for time-consuming deletion of physical data.
At CeBIT, Seagate Technology, Tarox, Wave Systems and ICT Economic Impact have
presented the complete system on March 15th, 2007 between 12 and 5 PM in the CeBIT
Convention Center.

Orda...excuse me to step in, but OS has NOTHING to do with the fact whether the TPM is turned on in the BIOS or not. And THATS the main problem.
Most OEMs have the driver installation routine preinstalled, in the case the TPM is activated in the BIOS the driver will install automatically, no matter what MS OS.

Alea.....Thanx!
And thats the point where it becomes really interesting! Using the internal FDE.2 without a TPM present could be managed through preboot authentication to fullfill the needs for the TRUSTED infrastructure.
External devices (USB FDEs) could only be managed WITH a TPM, as root of trust! You can´t trust the OS when the FDEs is connected while the OS is running! Same for all other external devices, since they can´t be verified in the preboot environment.

Bluzboy, Alea......if I may step in here re: NAND Flash
While I agree that NAND Flash will replace HDDs in an (for me) unknown timeframe, it wouldn´t change anything about the usage of trusted devices and Waves role in this picture. It´s not about the storage technique it´s about HOW is the device connected (fix for boot or USB) and WHAT is it for (bootable device or data device).
The preboot functionality can also be used with NAND Flash devices IF they have a build in controller chip, so nothing would have changed.
The issue is about external, via USB or Firewire attached devices. These devices have to be authenticated while the OS is running, so you have no chance to unlock the drive in the preboot environment. Thats the same with external FDE.2 HDDs connencted via USB.
SKS spoke at Cebit about USB devices and that they are working on this issue.
It doesn´t matter WHAT device, it only matters HOW (pre or within the OS) it will be authenticated.

GoKite, NICK.....THE FDE drive.
The FDE drive encrypts and decrypts data onthefly. But WITHOUT our ETDM it acts like a NORMAL drive and can be accessed by ANYBODY through the windows login! The preboot authentication is the KEY, I was told this by SKS AND the SECUDE tech.
BR
ISPRO
Just arrived from Cebit2007. First I´ve to say I haven´t read the boards nor have I listened to the conference call, so forgive me if I write something you already know.
Well, where should I start…..
We had the chance to talk with Steven, Bruno and Alexander, the most time we listened to SKS. He introduced us in the features of the ETDM plugin and ERAS. And here comes the first interesting point:
ETDM and ESC are running on machines WITH and WITHOUT TPM installed! The authentication takes place in a COOL preboot tool, that I´ve never seen before. That gives us the ability to ship our software to ALL Seagate customers whether they have ordered machines with or without a TPM!
I´ve visited Secudes booth before the Wave session and talked to a tech guy of Secude. Let me say here now that Secude is NO competition to Wave, since they only have a preboot authentication for the FDE.2 drive. They have NOTHING in conjunction with TPM and don´t plan to have in the near future. Their FDE software is NOT ready yet, since “we cannot programm anything until the FDE drive is released!”LOL
Secude has NO server sided solution and they are betting ONLY on SmartCards and NOT on TPMs. Their software based encryption tool uses a LINUX based partition on the disk (normal, NO FDE) to store passwords. The FDE solution (LOL) uses as our solution the chip on the drive for preboot authentication but NEVER uses a TPM for further functionalities. So I think it wasn´t even worth the time….
Unfortunately HP and Infineon were NOT presenting at Cebit!
SKS and Bruno were VERY excited about the Seagate deal since they get customer interest calls each day now. The pipeline is expanding very fast. The WAVE/SEAGATE relation will force MANY other OEMs to use Waves solution but there are no deals yet. EVERY OEM HAS TO use ETDM SINCE there is NO other solution available yet and the only potential competitor is…..Bruno talked about 20-30k potential seats for ETSpro in Europes pipeline which are all in the decision phase.
There was a huge interest of the press!
Obviously Dell and other OEMs will follow soon. Similar to USA the German government NOW makes the CEO of companies responsible for the loss of customer data, so Alexander means this will be a huge driver for these solutions.
I tested the Tarox notebooks and was very pleased since there is no performance penalty. You can erase the whole content of the drive within a nanosecond and never recover. The Tarox machine uses an IFX TPM1.2 and IFX TSS. You can administrated the TPM and the FDE via ERAS and set rights for different users. Using the FDE without a TPM present you can ONLY generate 4 User profiles, with the TPM as much profiles as you want.
NTT makes progress in Asia but they haven´t signed any contracts yet
I asked SKS about HP and he told me that it was very important that Wave demonstrated ETS working on HP since the demand will be there through the FDEs. He thinks that the IFX SW will run on BRCM TPMs but he isn´t sure since I wondered why HP doesn´t support their BRCM machines at all.

IdentiPHI Acquires SAFsolution and SAFmodule Software
Acquisition broadens IdentiPHI's product base to provide enterprise-grade security to its customers.
http://sev.prnewswire.com/computer-electronics/20070313/AQTU03613032007-1.html
AUSTIN, Texas, March 13 /PRNewswire/ -- IdentiPHI LLC, announces the purchase of SAFsolution and SAFmodule software from Saflink(R) Corporation and received certain rights under Saflink's patent portfolio. The terms of the agreement were composed of an up-front cash investment as well as ongoing royalties for three years. As part of this agreement, IdentiPHI will assume responsibility for all SAFsolution and SAFmodule customers and resellers.
SAFsolution and SAFmodule are market-leading biometric authentication products that provide enterprise-level security solutions for corporate and government users. Strong authentication methods such as smart cards and fingerprints as well as other biometric methods such as facial recognition, iris, and retina pattern may be used to authenticate users to corporate resources. SAFsolution integrates Microsoft(R) Windows(R) Active Directory to boost network and workstation authentication security and simplify or eliminate password management. SAFmodule brings biometric authentication to Novell(R) eDirectory(TM) networks.
IdentiPHI has been in the authentication and identity management market as an OEM provider of integrated third party products for many years. This acquisition allows IdentiPHI to manage and develop its own intellectual property. IdentiPHI will continue to maintain and grow the existing partnership with Bio-Key International to provide the biometric middleware which will allow IdentiPHI to maintain a hardware-agnostic approach to support biometric hardware.
IdentiPHI will be releasing a major update of the SAFsolution code in summer 2007 to support Microsoft Vista as well as 64-bit versions of Server 2003 and Longhorn. Subsequent releases in late 2007 will incorporate additional security features such as Trusted Platform Module support for key management applications and file / folder encryption. IdentiPHI will further expand on the software offerings of other partners to enhance biometric support to our IdentiPHI Single Sign-On product which is an OEM from ActivIdentity.
"The acquisition of an industry leading brand combined with our existing market experience will clearly place IdentiPHI at the top position in this marketplace. The biometric market has been expanding recently as more and more computer manufacturers are imbedding sensors into their notebook platforms. This is the sign that biometrics have made the mainstream and we see exponential growth from here." says Peter Gilbert, CEO of IdentiPHI.
In addition to the software products acquired, IdentiPHI received a royalty-free, non-exclusive license right of use for Saflink's Patent No. 6,618,806, or 806 Patent, issued September 9, 2003. The terms of the agreement include provisions for IdentiPHI to jointly enforce and seek remedies from infringers of this patent with Saflink. Many existing biometric solution providers use a matching process similar to the one outlined in the 806 patent. The 806 Patent is a process for controlling access to a computer network using biometric authentication. The patent primarily addresses a critical step in biometric authentication -- the policy system. The invention provides the flexibility administrators need to tailor biometric security for users within their organization. This patent describes how to control access in a computer network environment with a policy-based biometric authentication solution. For instance, it applies to systems that obtain a user's ID, determines which biometric to use for authentication (using either a user-specific policy or a system default policy), captures the user's biometric, compares the live sample to a record on file, and allows the user to log on if matched.
