CALGARY (CP) - Breakaways in overtime are rare but Calgary Flames left-winger Rob Niedermayer got one Saturday night and made the most of it.
Niedermayer's fourth goal of the season at 2:42 of the extra period gave Calgary a 2-1 win over the Los Angeles Kings as the Flames snapped a five-game winless skid. "A win like this really boosts our confidence and hopefully it's something we can build on and move forward with," Niedermayer said.
Niedermayer outskated Ziggy Palffy and Jason Allison for a loose puck at centre and with them both in pursuit, he raced in on Kings goalie Felix Potvin and fired a shot past him on the blocker side from 20 feet out.
"I was getting chased from behind and I just wanted to get a good shot away quick," Niedermayer said.
The sequence had begun deep in the Flames' zone but as Allison circled the net and tried to centre the puck, it glanced off Flames defenceman Toni Lydman and past the Kings defence pairing of Mattias Norstrom and Dmitri Yushkevish.
"It's the honesty of the game," said Flames coach Darryl Sutter. "He (Niedermayer) has played really well for us since he came back from his injury. He's being rewarded on the scoresheet for the jobs he's doing in the tough areas of the game."
Craig Conroy also scored for Calgary (15-22-7-3). Tied with Nashville for last place in the Western Conference, the Flames have a tie and a win in their first two games of a five-game homestand.
"Darryl said right from the start that we had a big homestand here and he wanted us to do well and get some points which is what we need to do if we're going to jump back into the playoff picture," said Niedermayer.
Palffy had the lone goal for Los Angeles (18-21-4-3).
"It was a tough way to lose," said Kings coach Andy Murray. "We certainly had the early chance on a three-on-two rush and just missed. We were pressing and they got the winning goal."
The Kings have lost nine of their past 11.
"We played a better hockey game but still, we're not going to win if we only score one goal," said Palffy. "It's a tough loss for us, we're battling for that eighth spot in the conference and we know Calgary's behind us."
Calgary took the lead 1:04 into the game.
Dave Lowry's shot from the slot was stopped by Potvin but the rebound came straight out to Conroy who made a neat move in tight and tucked in his 12th of the season.
The lead lasted just over five minutes before Palffy tied it with a short-handed goal at 6:27.
Chris Drury's dangerous pass at his own blue-line deflected in air off Steven Heinze and was gloved down by Palffy who burst in on goaltender Roman Turek and scored his team-leading 14th goal.
Palffy's first short-handed goal of the year marked the league-leading ninth time Calgary has given up a goal while on a man advantage.
The goal turned out to be a sign of things to come for the Flames struggling 26th ranked power-play as they ended up squandering six power-play's on the game.
Potvin was busiest in the third period as he was forced to make 14 saves after facing just 12 shots through the first 40 minutes.
Turek finished the night with 18 stops.
Alexander Frolov nearly put Los Angeles into the lead seven minutes into the third period when he neatly spun around Gauthier on his way to the net but his close-in shot hit the goalpost.
Los Angeles entered the game with seven players hurt and it didn't take long for that number to increase to eight.
Defenceman Lubomir Visnovsky was helped off the ice six minutes into the first period after suffering a sprained left knee. The injury occurred when Heinze fell awkwardly onto Visnovsky's leg on a harmless looking incident in the Kings' end.
The Flames also suffered a self-inflicted casualty with Oleg Saprykin leaving in the second period after banging knees with teammate Jarome Iginla. Saprykin's injury was also diagnosed as a sprained knee.
Notes: Calgary C Steve Begin has been cleared to play after recovering from a concussion. His return leaves the Flames completely healthy. . . . Conroy's goal was the 100th of his NHL career. . . . The Flames announced that rookie defenceman Jordan Leopold will play in the NHL Young Stars Game that is played during the all-star break.

MONTREAL (CP) - The Toronto Maple Leafs won in overtime, but Claude Julien felt like a winner after his debut as coach of the Montreal Canadiens.
Nik Antropov scored 56 seconds into overtime as the Leafs beat Montreal 3-2 before a capacity crowd of 21,273 Saturday night in the first game since Julien moved up from Hamilton of the AHL on Friday to replace the fired Michel Therrien.
"The only negative thing was the loss," said Julien, whose team fired a season-high 39 shots at a pair of Leaf goaltenders and played with energy not seen in weeks by a Montreal team. "There were a lot of positives.
"They were committed on defence and we also came back to get a point (for the overtime loss). If the guys keep playing like that at both ends of the ice, we'll be OK."
Mariusz Czerkawski, who had been in Therrien's doghouse, tied the game when he banked a shot in off defenceman Tomas Kaberle's knee at 12:54 of the third period. It was just his third goal of the season and first since Oct. 29, 2002.
In overtime, Antropov moved into the slot on a rush and saw his wrist shot go under goaltender Jose Theodore's right arm and trickle into the net.
"It's a great ending," said Leafs captain Mats Sundin. "We knew Montreal would be fired up with their new coach.
"They're a good team and they probably haven't been playing up to their potential. We're happy with the two points. It probably wasn't our best effort, but Montreal played really well. Our goaltender saved the day for us."
Actually, it was two goaltenders. With No. 1 Ed Belfour missing a second straight game with a sore back, Trevor Kidd started the game, but had to leave due to a groin injury 5:30 into the third period.
Third-stringer Mikael Tellqvist finished the game and made nine saves for his first NHL win.
"My pulse went up over 200, that's for sure," Tellqvist said.
Travis Green and Robert Reichel scored in the first period for Toronto, 25-17-4-1, while Yanic Perreault scored in the second for Montreal, 18-19-5-5.
Julien, 42, looked comfortable in his new job, despite playing before a full house and a national TV audience.
"I felt very at ease," he said. "I have no idea why I'm not more nervous than I am.
"The first period went really fast for me. But from the second period on, I felt pretty normal."
The boost of energy from having a new boss behind the bench saw the Canadiens build a 6-1 shots advantage early, but Toronto turned the tables and got two goals.
Usually slow-footed Shayne Corson made like Pavel Bure as he blew past defenceman Patrick Traverse and centred the puck for Green to slide past Theodore at 9:03.
Reichel's pass from behind the net went off the skates of Traverse and Perreault and into the net at 14:24 after a long spell of pressure in the Montreal zone.
The Leafs killed four consecutive minor penalties in the middle period, but Montreal kept the pressure on after the last one and Perreault got a chance to backhand in his 20th goal of the season from the side of the net at 19:53.
"I thought most of the players worked hard," said Perreault. "It was close.
"We tried pretty hard. It's too bad we didn't get the bounces, but that's the kind of effort we need."
The win was Toronto's third in a row.
It was the second time in recent years that a Canadiens coach made his debut against the Leafs on a Saturday night. In 1995, Mario Tremblay won his first game as a coach 4-3 over Toronto on a goal with one second left in regulation time by Pierre Turgeon.
Notes - Since the NHL was born in 1917, Montreal is 312-257-88-1 against Toronto . . . Defenceman Jyrki Lumme sat out with what Toronto called an upper body injury. Anders Eriksson was called up from St. John's to take his spot . . . The Leafs were also missing Alexander Mogilny (sore foot) and Tom Fitzgerald (shoulder) . . . Montreal was without Doug Gilmour (back spasms) and Chad Kilger (knee), while Donald Audette and Karl Dykhuis were scratched.
Despite overtime loss, Habs new coach Julien optimistic after debut

MONTREAL (CP) - Instead of riding the bus to Rochester in the minor leagues, Claude Julien took a charter flight to Florida on Sunday after his first game as coach of the Montreal Canadiens.
Toronto spoiled Julien's debut on Saturday night when Nik Antropov scored 56 seconds into overtime in a 3-2 Maple Leafs victory.
Julien, a rookie NHL coach who was called in from Hamilton of the AHL on Friday to replace the fired Michel Therrien, remained optimistic.
The Canadiens played with energy not seen in weeks and, for one of the rare times this season, outshot an opponent, this time by 39-27.
"The guys played with a lot of energy," said Julien, whose next tests come Monday night against the Panthers in Sunrise, Fla., and Wednesday night at Tampa Bay.
"They looked a little nervous at first but they really followed the game plan."
The consolation was one point for the overtime loss, but it was a game the Canadiens could have won.
The Leafs, who won their third in a row, were without their top scorer, Alexander Mogilny, who was resting a sore foot, and their No. 1 goaltender Ed Belfour, who sat out a second game with back spasms.
Toronto was also playing a second game in as many nights after a victory in Washington on Friday.
But Leafs goaltender Trevor Kidd held off the Habs until he left the game at 5:30 of the third period with a pulled groin. Kidd was replaced by Mikael Tellqvist, who stopped nine of 10 shots for the win.
At the other end, soft defensive play by the Patrice Brisebois-Patrick Traverse duo, which was subsequently split up, led to Toronto goals by Travis Green and Robert Reichel in the first period.
In overtime, goaltender Jose Theodore muffed Antropov's high wrist shot for the game-winner.
"He caught me moving," said Theodore, last season's Vezina and Hart Trophy winner. "It was one-on-one in the middle, he took a quick shot and he beat me.
"You always want to get a new coach the win in his first game, but if you look at the way we played, it's something we can build on. If we keep playing like that, we'll have success."
For Julien, it was a night for experiments. He tried new line combinations and defence pairings, tried using top scorers Saku Koivu and Richard Zednik to kill penalties and briefly matched his top line against Toronto's No. 1 line.
Some of his moves worked.
Yanic Perreault, with new linemate Jan Bulis on his wing, ended a 10-game scoring drought in the second period.
And Mariusz Czerkawski, who a week ago was playing for Julien in Hamilton, scored only his third NHL goal of the season and his first since Oct. 29.
He tied the game at 12:54 of the third to force overtime.
"I see it as a fresh start," Czerkawski said of the coaching change. "Now, I'm looking forward to the next games and that's what it's all about - to enjoy the game and work hard.
"You can look at it as I've scored three goals in 47 games, but I like to look at it as first game, first goal. I want to keep it positive."
The Leafs, still four points ahead of Boston in second place in the Northeast Division, went home to face Philadelphia on Tuesday night.
that's funny. I am going to Boston next week, maybe if I have time I'll stop in and have a cold one there.
Australian Immigrant
A man and his wife, both living in Britain, had been wanting to move to Australia for a long time as this is where the husbands family live and where he grew up, nowadays imigration to Australia, as it is with many countries is quite strict and so they had a long wait for there interview with the imigration office.
Finally they got there interview and both very nervous after many questions were asked there came the "do you have a criminal record?"
to which the husband relpied "I didn't realise you still needed one?!"
Missed Final
At Duke University, there were four sophomores taking Organic Chemistry.
They were doing so well on all the quizzes, midterms and labs, etc., that each had an A so far for the semester. These four friends were so confident that the weekend before finals, they decided to go up to the University of Virginia and party with some friends there. They had a great time, but after all the hearty partying, they slept all day Sunday and didn't make it back to Duke until early Monday morning.
Rather than taking the final then, they decided to find their professor after the final and explain to him why they missed it. They explained that they had gone to UVA for the weekend with the plan to come back in time to study, but, unfortunately, they had a flat tire on the way back, didn't have a spare, and couldn't get help for a long time. As a result, they missed the final.
The professor thought it over and then agreed they could make up the final the following day. The guys were elated and relieved. They studied that night and went in the next day at the time the professor had told them. He placed them in separate rooms and handed each of them a test booklet, and told them to begin.
They looked at the first problem, worth five points. It was something simple about free radical formation. Cool, they thought! All at the same time, each one in his separate room, thought, this is going to be easy. Each finished the lengthy problem and then turned the page. On the second page was written:
For 95 points: Which tire?

Sheesh... people who don't understand humour shouldn't read these jokes are out fishing and are having great luck. They're catching fish so fast that they're forced to go back early. "This is so great," says the first guy. "We should mark the spot so we can come here again."
"You're right," says the other guy, who then dives over the side and scrapes a big X on the bottom of the boat.
They head back to shore and just as they're about to dock, the first guy looks at the second guy and says, "What if we don't get the same boat next time?"
25th Anniversary
A man and his wife go to the site of their honeymoon for their 25th anniversary. As the couple is reflecting on that magical evening 25 years ago, the wife asks the husband, "When you first saw my naked body in front of you, what was going through your mind?"
The husband replies, "All I wanted to do was screw your brains out and suck your breasts dry."
"What are you thinking now?" the wife asks as she undresses.
The husband quickly replies: "It looks like I did a pretty good job."
Cleaning
Zeke and Clem are sittin' on the front porch, 'bout sundown, just takin' it easy when Zeke notices Clem's old coonhound taking a mighty selective bath. The old dog had spent 'bout five minutes just lickin' on his balls. Zeke turns to Clem and says "Damn, I wish I could do that!"
Clem looks Zeke right in the eye and says "That dog would bite you....."
Haircut
A guy sticks his head into a barber shop and asks, "How long before I can get a haircut?"
The barber looks around the shop and says, "About 2 hours." The guy leaves.
A few days later the same guy sticks his head in the door and asks, "How long before I can get a haircut?"
The barber looks around at the shop full of customers and says, "About 3 hours." The guy leaves.
A week later the same guy sticks his head in the shop and asks, "How long before I can get a haircut?"
The barber looks around the shop and says, "About an hour and half." The guy leaves. The barber looks over at a friend in the shop and says, "Hey Bill, follow that guy and see where he goes. He keeps asking how long he has to wait for a haircut, but then doesn't come back."
A little while later, Bill comes back into the shop, laughing hysterically.
The barber asks, "Bill, where did he go when he left here?"
Bill looks up, tears in his eyes and says, "Your house!
Well I never did get to the casino last night, but I am going this afternoon to watch the horseraces and will play between races.

Rangers welcome Flyers to Broadway
New York, NY (Sports Network) - The New York Rangers hope to stretch their winning streak to a season-high four games this evening they welcome the Philadelphia Flyers to Madison Square Garden.
On Wednesday, Joel Bouchard scored at 1:58 of overtime to lift New York to a 2-1 victory over the Washington Capitals. Tom Poti also scored for the Rangers, who have won four of their last five (4-1-0) to move within three games of .500 for the first time in a month.
Mike Dunham, who will start for the 15th time in the 16 games since December 16, made 24 saves between the pipes for New York to claim his fourth straight victory.
Dunham is 5-1-1 in his last seven starts with a 1.55 goals- against-average and .947 save percentage over that span. In fact, Rangers goaltenders have allowed two goals or less in six of their last eight games.
The Rangers could get an added boost on the blue line tonight with the return of rugged defenseman Dale Purinton, who has missed the last 15 games with a broken left foot. Purinton went full-out in practice on Saturday, but head coach Trottier said he will be a game-time decision.
Rangers' captain Mark Messier celebrated his 42nd birthday on Saturday.
New York, which will play 13 of its next 18 away from home, is 6-3-1 in its last 10 overall and has posted a 11-12-3 mark at MSG on the season.
Philadelphia, meanwhile, comes into Sunday's tilt on the heels of a 3-2 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday.
Michal Handzus scored late in the third period to lift Philadelphia to the win. Kim Johnsson and Mark Recchi each had a goal and an assist for the Flyers, who are just one point behind the first place New Jersey Devils in the Atlantic Division.
Robert Esche needed to make just 12 saves for the Flyers, who have won seven of their last eight overall.
Philadelphia, which will close a brief two-game road swing in Toronto on Tuesday, has won four straight games on the road and are 13-6-3 on opposition ice this season.
The Flyers have taken three straight from the Rangers and are 8-4-1 in their last 13 at MSG.
In the lone meeting of the season between these two teams back on December 5, the Flyers claimed a 3-2 overtime victory, thanks to a questionable penalty shot being awarded to Handzus with just 37 seconds to play. After being hauled down by Poti, Handzus made the most of the penalty shot and beat young Dan Blackburn just over the goaltender's left arm.
De LA Hoya Has 2nd Great Debut
Los Angeles Daily News - January 18, 2003
As he made his way down to ringside, Oscar De La Hoya took a look around the Grand Olympic Auditorium, his eyes taking in the sight of the near-capacity crowd. De La Hoya's multimillion-dollar smile then beamed across his face.
He had reason to be happy. Just as he did as a fighter taking his first major step, he now was taking his first major step as a promoter, and it was turning into a huge success.
An announced crowd of 5,182 attended the fight card Thursday night at the Olympic, where De La Hoya's promotional firm, Golden Boy Promotions, put on the event.
According to Olympic Auditorium officials, it was the biggest crowd in the history of the venue since it reopened in 1994, outdrawing the 4,600 who came for a card headlined by De La Hoya that same year.
In the main event Thursday, WBC super bantamweight belt holder Oscar Larios (47-3-1, with 33 knockouts) pounded out a unanimous decision over Marcos Licona (19-3-1, eight KOs) in a 10-round nontitle bout. In the co-feature, 2000 U.S. Olmypian and Los Angeles native Jose Navarro (14-0, six KOs) scored a second-round knockout of Carlos Madrigal (20-4, 15 KOs) in a super flyweight bout.
"I'm continuing the history here," De La Hoya said of the Olympic, which in its nearly 80 years has hosted fights featuring boxing greats such as Joe Louis, Joe Frazier, Archie Moore and Julio Cesar Chavez. "My goal is to make sure the history never dies down."
Tszyu Retains Super Lightweight Titles
Associated Press - January 19, 2003
Kostya Tszyu retained his undisputed super lightweight title Sunday when "Jesse" James Leija was unable to start the seventh round because of an injured right ear drum.
Tszyu, the IBF, WBC and WBA champion, improved to 30-1-1.
The Russian-born Australian fought for the first time in Australia since stopping Calvin Grove in May 1998 in Newcastle. In Tszyu's previous fight, he successfully defended his titles by outpointing Ben Tackie in Las Vegas.
Leija, from San Antonio, dropped to 43-6-2.
He said he hurt his ear in the fourth or fifth round and that it hurt his balance.
"I am sure it is busted but to what extent I don't know, I'm not a doctor," Leija said. "He hit me one or two good shots but he never hurt me."
Tszyu said he outpunched the Texan.
"I believe I did hurt him a couple of times," Tszyu said "... off-balance is not from injury problem but from hitting."

One of only three undisputed world champions in boxing, Kostya Tszyu, will make the first start in his adopted homeland of Australia in nearly five years when he defends his World Boxing Council/World Boxing Association/International Boxing Federation (WBC/WBA/IBF) 140-pound titles against former WBC super featherweight titleholder and WBC No. 4 contender "Jesse" James Leija live on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, at 10 p.m. ET/PT. In a second 12-round fight at the Telestra Dome in Melbourne, Australia, undefeated contender and 2000 Uzbekistan Olympic Gold Medallist, Muhammad Abdullaev, faces former IBF lightweight titleholder Philip Holiday for the World Boxing Organization (WBO) Intercontinental 140-pound title.
KOSTYA TSZYU (29-1-1, 23 KOs):
"I would like to thank Showtime and everyone involved for making this happen. I am pleased to be fighting back where my career began 11 years ago. When I came to Australia, it was for a visit. I could not speak the language and needed an interpreter. Now, it is my home and I would never want to be any place else. Not many believed an event like this could happen again here. But it is going to happen, and it is very important to me. More than 30,000 fans will be here and the atmosphere will be great. The excitement in the stadium is going to be tremendous.
"I am proud of what I have done in my career. Leija is 36, but I am going to be 34 this year. I have fought the best, first in the amateurs and then as a pro. Like Jesse, I cannot wait to jump in the ring for this fight. I am not going to make a prediction. We are both humans and anything can happen. But one promise I can make is that this fight is going to be very entertaining and one that fans remember for a long time.
"In America, boxers like to talk trash at a press conference. But not here, not for this show. Jesse has always been a class act and a credit to the game. We will do our business in the ring. I still feel I am improving. I am always experimenting and trying to improve my power, stamina, technique and defense. When a boxer stops improving it is time to quit. I have been planning to retire the last 3-4 years. But after each fight, I want to come back for more."
JESSE JAMES LEIJA (43-5-2, 1 NC, 17 KOs):
"If I did not think I could win, I would not be here. I thank Showtime for sticking with me. In 1992, they gave me the opportunity to fight Azumah Nelson in San Antonio. Then, they televised the rematch when I won the world title. I thank everybody on my team who has been with me all these years. And, Kostya Tszyu, I also thank, for this opportunity. It is strange for a guy my age to get this kind of chance, but I have beat four world-ranked guys in a row. The last time I was on Showtime, I beat Juan Lazcano and lost the decision, but everybody knows who won.
"I have had a long career, but it is not over yet. I have put in a lot of hard work for this fight. I have trained 18 weeks. Kostya Tszyu has a great right hand and is a great boxer. He is a true champion in and out of the ring. This is going to be a tough test for me, but I am not going to leave here without a fight.''
MUHAMMAD ABDULLAEV (10-0, 8 KOs)
"I am very excited and confident. Holiday is a physical guy that likes to get inside, but in a way that is perfect for me. He is a former world champion with a lot of experience, but I had a lot of experience too, but in the amateurs. As a pro I am gaining experience quickly. I feel I am progressing every time out. I do not expect an easy fight. Holiday has fought the best and has never been stopped except for out cuts. And I know he will be coming to win.
"I feel I am continuing to get the respect of the fans and media. This is another step up for me, but one I am looking forward to. I am willing to fight anybody out there. I beat Ricardo Williams (twice) and Miguel Cotto in the amateurs, but they have already said they do not want to fight me. In a way, I cannot blame them either. I thank Showtime for giving me another opportunity to fight on their network again. I am anxious to show what I can do and putting on a good show.''
PHILIP HOLIDAY (38-5-1, 22 KOs):
"It is great to be on a fight card like this with an opportunity to back in the ranking for a shot at the world title, which is what I want to do. Abdullaev is a strong guy and I am not going to say he is making a mistake fighting me because this is obviously what his camp feels he has to do. I just know that I have been working very hard and understand that this is a great chance for me to reestablish myself.''
Camacho Returns to Ring, Stops Villareal
Associated Press - January 19, 2003
HOLLYWOOD, Fla. (AP) - Hector ``Macho'' Camacho returned from an 18-month absence to stop Ecuador's Otilio Villareal after the eighth round of a super middleweight bout Saturday night.
Camacho, a 40-year-old former three-time world champion from Puerto Rico, outpunched and wore down Villareal, who did not come out for the ninth round of the scheduled 10-round fight.
Camacho improved to 76-4-2 with his 37th knockout. The former junior lightweight and junior welterweight champion had not fought since outpointing Roberto Duran in July 2001.
Camacho set the pace in the first round, scoring with a lead right and follow-up left to Villareal's head. In the second, Camacho used his left as the lead shot and repeatedly landed punches to his opponent's head.
A plodding Villareal (15-16-1) tried to frustrate Camacho with a lead right, but Camacho outpointed him with his combinations. Camacho pinned Villareal on the ropes in the third and connected with combinations to the body.
Villareal continued to absorb shots in the middle rounds as Camacho led with straight lefts or right jabs to the head. Camacho's punches had Villareal bleeding from the nose.
Villareal was on the retreat for most of the seventh round and seemed unwilling to counter Camacho's shots. Villareal was busier in the eighth and scored a short combination early in the round. But Camacho pressed the action for most of the eighth by landing repeated lefts to the head.

I'm going to play the SEGA pretty soon. Going to make $500 if I have to take an axe to it, ha ha ha.

OTTAWA (CP) - The Ottawa Senators keep winning games, and their fans keep packing the Corel Centre.
The Senators defeated the Washington Capitals 5-2 in front of a sellout crowd of 18,500 Saturday night for their fifth consecutive win and NHL leading 30th of the season. The Senators filed for bankruptcy protection last week.
Shortly after, majority owner Rod Bryden challenged fans to show their commitment to keeping the team in Ottawa by filling the arena.
And they have responded, making the Corel Centre a busy place this week.
In the three games since Ottawa returned from a road trip, the Senators have not drawn fewer than 18,000 fans and Saturday was their second sellout in five days.
"The atmosphere in the city is very exciting," said Ottawa native and Senators forward Todd White. "I care a lot about this team, the organization and this city. I'm from here and there's nothing I'd like more than for the team to be successful on the ice and at the box office."
Daniel Alfredsson and Radek Bonk had two goals each for the Senators.
However, Ottawa goaltender Patrick Lalime's shutout streak of 180 minutes grew only moderately to 184 minutes six seconds before Michael Nylander scored to give Washington a 1-0 lead.
While on a power play, Nylander was left alone at the side of the goal and put a backhand over Lalime's shoulder at 4:06.
The Senators had been applying strong pressure up to that point and had at least three good scoring chances but were unable to beat the seldom-used Sebastien Charpentier in the Washington net.
But Ottawa finally got to Charpentier as Bonk scored a power-play goal on a shot from a sharp angle that deflected off Brenden Witt, who was trying to contain Martin Havlat at the side of the goal.
Alfredsson fired a shot over Charpentier's shoulder with about a minute remaining in the first to give the Senators the 2-1 lead.
Washington's Robert Lang had the only goal of the second. Lang never actually got a shot away as he broke in on Lalime. The puck rolled off his stick and between the legs of Lalime, who seemed to be fooled on the play.
Havlat scored the winning goal early in the third. Bonk fed a perfect pass to Havlat, who redirected the puck passed Charpentier at 6:09.
The Senators dominated from that point, with Alfredsson providing some insurance with his second goal of the game at 10:29. Bonk rounded out the scoring with an empty-net goal at 18:59.
"In the third we took control. We had good chances, we made big plays and we didn't give them anything," Lalime said. "We came out in the third period really wanting to win and it showed."
With sniper Peter Bondra not feeling well and superstar Jaromir Jagr missing the entire third period with an aggravated groin, the Capitals didn't have much of a chance. They also played Friday and lost 4-1 to Toronto.
"I don't know if we ran out of gas or if (Ottawa) stepped on the gas," said Washington coach Bruce Cassidy. "We're playing a hell of a lot better than we were six weeks ago, but this was disappointing."
Notes - Senators rookie defenceman Anton Volchenkov was named Saturday to the Eastern Conference team that will participate in the YoungStars team at this year's all-star weekend in Sunrise, Fla. Volchenkov, a healthy scratch against Washington, has two goals and nine points in 35 games this season. Ottawa assistant coaches Perry Pearn, Roger Neilson and Don Jackson will coach the Eastern Conference squad.
Im still digging info right now, but in light of recent activity there may be an opportunity to buy a nice block of this at a good price. If Miller buys in for 100K, I'll be in the same day.
It is very interesting to see a peer to peer/investor to investor system being suggested. As you can imagine that is exactly how the stockmarket probalby began.
I am a partner in a business that is attempting to make a profit. Others desire to share in the profit and so they purchase a portion of my interest in the company. This continues as the portions of the company and the shared profit get smaller and smaller.
At some point there are so many interested individuals and so many small portions of the business that we must created a central place for record keeping and to facilitate liquidity in the transfer, exchange, and sale of these small pieces.
KabooM!!!
Now we have more people involved in the dividing up, selling, transferring, recording, trading, exchanging, and marketing of these small pieces of businesses then there actually are owners of these pieces. Not only that, but the system has taken on a life of its own. The many new small partners are no longer getting involved with the hope of sharing a small piece of the businesses profit, but now for the sheer speculation that there will be more individuals interested in buying their small piece of the business. Much like a MultiLevelMarketing scheme. Profits of the business are no longer the primary valuator of the pieces of the business. In fact, many of the business are so far from profitable they will most certianly never ever earn a single cent of income, yet still there are individuals who are eager to give up their money to become a minute partner in the entity.
What is the point of this system? Why would anyone want to buy part of a business that produces no profit for them to share? Investing is putting your money and efforts into something which will bring you a positive reward. Is that what is happening here? Gambling is placing you money and efforts into something of a speculative nature that offers varied levels of reward or possible loss. Probably a more honest description of these markets. Are we investors or are we gamblers? Are we hoping to share in the profits of our investments or merely hoping to sell them to the 'greater fool'?
Wow, I am negative. ha ha ha
I don't doubt the sincerity of the author, but there are a few incorrect assumptions in his work as well as a few conclusions he draws which I do not believe to be entirely accurate. For example:
-"fraud on the Pink Sheets occurs in two key phases in the process of becoming a publicly traded entity: the initial sale of the stock to the public and the actual trading/quotation on the Pink Sheets." - IMO Fraud occurs at many levels, the greatest of which is through the selling of nonexistent shares by third parties, sometimes financers of the very stock being traded. (ie short selling)
-" you require those wishing to trade Pink Sheet entities to set up an account in which they must place their own funds and holdings in order to trade." -Who would be responsible for these accounts? Would they be federally guarnateed? Who would you trust with your money or your share certificates? Couldn't that institution/depository be a source of fraud itself?
-"The public does not want more restrictions and requirements on these OTCBB companies such as the ones the BBX is proposing." -I strongly disagree with this comment. The only people who would be satisfied with less requirements would be those operating the companies or those perpetrating a scam.
I could go on, but suffice to say that I think the ideas proposed are very idealistic and not realistic. Change in the marketplace has taken many years and there is very little support or effort from Government and regulatory bodies to do anything as drastic as is being proposed. Even with recent major flaws being discovered at the highest levels of the capitalist stock market system, there has been little reform suggested or made. At the lower level like the OTC, BBX, and Pinkies, there will never be much effort expended, simply because the players involved in the game are small fish with little money and political clout. It is a game stacked against the investor/gambler much like a Vegas casino. Try walking into Vegas and telling them you would like to amend the system to give the player an improved advantage.
The reality is you either accept that the game is rigged and you are playing at a disadvantage or you walk away from the game.
But that is just my 2 bits worth, and I am an admitted gambler. :)
It is a fair and good question. I have confirmed for a fact via third party Memphis locals that there is a trucking office at the available address in Memphis and that the office is open daily and doing business. That office will thus have to have the forementioned certificate registered in some name or the other.
Let's find out the name printed on it and then we will be closer to your answer. Veltex/multimodal/AllCoast etc, lets get to the bottom of it as best we can without fighting over the semantics and the issue of exactly how relevant it is. Bottomline, maybe only 1 shareholder wants to know, but that should be enough to make it important.
thanks for keeping this board to a better level than the other.
Well I have been working feverishly to try to view every post made on each board in the past month. I hope it helps. ha ha ha.
Flyers earn Lightning victory
Michal Handzus scored with 7:23 remaining in the third period.
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Michal Handzus scored late in the third period to lift the Philadelphia Flyers to a 3-2 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning at the First Union Center. Kim Johnsson and Mark Recchi each had a goal and an assist for the Flyers, who improved to 8-1 in their last nine contests.
Robert Esche needed to make just 12 saves, as Philadelphia remained unbeaten in its last eight meetings with the Lightning (6-0-2). The Flyers haven't lost at home to Tampa Bay since a 3-1 setback on January 9, 1997.
Vaclav Prospal and Vincent Lecavalier scored for the Lightning, who had their winless streak stretched to five games (0-3-1). Nikolai Khabibulin turned aside 21 shots in the loss.
Handzus scored with 7:23 remaining in the third period to give Philadelphia a 3-2 edge. Donald Brashear wristed a shot from the top of the right circle and Khabibulin made the save, but allowed a rebound. Handzus raced to the loose puck at the bottom of the right circle and was able to send a shot between the goaltender's pads.
Esche stopped all six shots in the final 20 minutes to help the Flyers hold the one-goal lead.
Prospal scored at 6:17 of the first period to give the Lightning a 1-0 lead. Dan Boyle skated through the left circle and fed a pass into the slot for Prospal, who was able to deflect the puck past Esche.

Tough job, but what else are those guys going to do for a living, ha ha ha.
Which Klitschko brother is going to knock Lewis's block off?
Also, keep in ming that I had to buy my membership with canadian dollars, so it almost cost me a weeks income, ha ha ha. Damned exchange rate.
Ah, I was not aware of that regarding the filter. I signed up for the premium not long after starting to post here. It was worth it to be able to use the private message function alone. There really are some great people here on some of the other boards and I would say that I have got my money worth already in other ways.
They do have a happy hour every friday that allows free members to use the premium services for a period of time to see if they find them worth the expense.
I'm a really cheap Ba***rd and so I never thought I would ever pay to join any internet site. I'm one of those guys who 'borrows' software and music as often as possible, not to mention my satellite signal, ha ha ha. Gee, I am more unethical than I realized. Anyhow, I have found that buying the membership has been worthwhile. This website is much better than raginbull or siliconinvestor and I can see that they are actively improving it weekly with suggestions from us users. Something that ragingbull never did.
There is an ignore function here, it is under tools and is called filters. It is currently being upgraded this weekend and will include the ability to filter not only a poster, but also replies to that poster and boards started by that poster. A valuable feature for some.
King, you may wish to go back and edit that post. Name calling is not allowed on these boards and it may result in your post being edited or removed.
It's okay that we all don't agree on this stock, that is what makes our society great. Let's refrain from getting personal as we are all here to simply try to makek a few dollars and have a little fun.

Thanks excel and Phil.
