A miner’s work pants with a five-button fly, recovered from the 1857 sinking of the S.S. Central America, that may have been made by or for Levi Strauss during the California Gold Rush-era. They sold for $114,000 in an auction conducted by Holabird Western Americana Collections in Reno, Nev., on December 3, 2022.
Pulled from a sunken trunk in an 1857 shipwreck off the coast of North Carolina, work pants that auction officials describe as the oldest known pair of jeans in the world have sold for $114,000.
The white, heavy-duty miner’s pants with a five-button fly were among 270 Gold Rush-era artifacts that sold for a total of nearly $1 million in Reno last weekend, according to Holabird Western American Collections.
There’s disagreement about whether the pricey pants have any ties to the father of modern-day blue jeans, Levi Strauss, as they predate by 16 years the first pair officially manufactured by his San Francisco-based Levi Strauss & Co. in 1873.
Some say historical evidence suggests there are links to Strauss, who was a wealthy wholesaler of dry goods at the time, and the pants could be a very early version of what would become the iconic jeans. But the company’s historian and archive director, Tracey Panek, says any claims about their origin are “speculation.”
“The pants are not Levi’s nor do I believe they are miner’s work pants,” she wrote in an email to The Associated Press.
Regardless of their origin, there’s no denying the pants were made before the S.S. Central America sank in a hurricane on Sept. 12, 1857, packed with passengers who began their journey in San Francisco and were on their way to New York via Panama. And there’s no indication older work pants dating to the Gold Rush-era exist.
“Those miner’s jeans are like the first flag on the moon, a historic moment in history,” said Dwight Manley, managing partner of the California Gold Marketing Group, which owns the artifacts and put them up for auction.
Other auction items that had been entombed for more than a century in the ship’s wreckage 7,200 feet (2,195 meters) below the surface of the Atlantic Ocean included the purser’s keys to the treasure room where tons of Gold Rush coins and assayers ingots were stored. It sold for $103,200.
Tens of millions of dollars worth of gold has been sold since shipwreck recovery began in 1988. But last Saturday marked the first time any artifacts hit the auction block. Another auction is planned in February.
“There has never been anything like the scope of these recovered artifacts, which represented a time capsule of daily life during the Gold Rush,” said Fred Holabird, president of the auction company.
Sonora — and sailed to Panama, where they crossed the isthmus by train before boarding the doomed ship. Of those on board when the S.S. Central America went down, 425 died and 153 were saved.
The unique mix of artifacts from high society San Franciscans to blue-collar workers piqued the interest of historians and collectors alike. The pants came from the trunk of an Oregon man, John Dement, who served in the Mexican-American War.
“At the end of the day, nobody can say these are or are not Levi’s with 100% certainty,” Manley said. But “these are the only known Gold Rush jean … not present in any collection in the world.”
“At the end of the day, nobody can say these are or are not Levi’s with 100% certainty,” Manley said. But “these are the only known Gold Rush jean … not present in any collection in the world.”
Holabird, considered a Gold Rush-era expert in his over 50 years as a scientist and historian, agreed: “So far, no museum has come forward with another.”
Panek said Levi Strauss & Co. and Jacob Davis, a Reno tailor, received a U.S. Patent in May 1873 for “An Improvement in Fastening Pocket-Openings.” Months later, she said, the company began manufacturing the famous riveted pants — “Levi’s 501 jeans, the first modern blue jean.”
She said before the auction that the shipwreck pants have no company branding — no “patches, buttons or even rivets, the innovation patented in 1873.”
Panek added in emails to AP this week that the pants “are not typical of miner’s work pants in our archives.” She cited the color, “unusual fly design with extra side buttonholes” and the non-denim fabric that’s lighter weight “than cloth used for its earliest riveted clothing.”
Holabird said he told Panek while she examined the pants in Reno last week there was no way to compare them historically or scientifically to those made in 1873.
Everything had changed — the materials, product availability, manufacturing techniques and market distribution — between 1857 and the time Strauss came out with a rivet-enforced pocket, Holabird said. He said Panek didn’t disagree with him.
Levi Strauss & Co. has long maintained that up until 1873, the company was strictly a wholesaler and did no manufacturing of clothing.
Holabird believes the pants were made by a subcontractor for Strauss. He decided to “follow the money — follow the gold” and discovered Strauss’ had a market reach and sales “on a level never seen before.”
“Strauss was the largest single merchant to ship gold out of California in the 1857-1858 period,” Holabird said.
The list of the $1.6 million cargo that left San Francisco on the S.S. Sonora in August 1857 for Panama was topped by Wells Fargo’s $260,300 in gold. Five other big banks were next, followed by Levi Strauss with $76,441. Levi Strauss had at least 14 similar shipments averaging $91,033 each from 1856-58, Holabird said.
“Strauss is selling to every decent-sized dry goods store in the California gold regions, probably hundreds of them — from Shasta to Sonora and beyond,” Holabird said. “This guy was an absolute marketing genius, unforeseen.”
“In short, his huge sales create a cause to be manufactured. He would have to contract with producers for an entire production run.”

This Little-known but spot-on economic indicator says recession and lower stock prices are all but certain

The divergence between two consumer sentiment measures is a strong predictor
An obscure and arcane economic indicator suggests that Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell was wrong when he said at his Nov. 30 news conference that “There is a path to a soft, a softish landing” for the U.S. economy.
This indicator traces to the large divergence between consumers’ views about the economy in general and their immediate personal financial circumstances in particular. A recession has occurred each time over the past four decades in which this divergence even approached its current level.
To measure this divergence, this indicator focuses on the Conference Board’s Consumer Confidence Index (CCI) and the University of Michigan’s Consumer Sentiment Survey (UMI). While there is some overlap between what these two indices measure, there is a significant difference in emphasis, according to James Stack of InvesTech Research, from whom I first heard about this indicator. The CCI more heavily reflects consumers’ attitudes towards the overall economy, according to Stack, while the UMI is more heavily weighted towards their immediate personal circumstances.
Perhaps not surprisingly, the CCI currently is higher than the UMI. Even as American consumers’ attitudes towards their immediate financial situations continue to sour, due to everything from inflation to higher mortgage rates to a softening housing market, the overall economy has proven to be remarkably resilient. Yet more evidence of this resilience was the Dec. 2 jobs report, in which the Labor Department reported the creation of a much-higher-than-expected number of new jobs.
What is more surprising is the magnitude of the current divergence. According to the latest data releases from the Conference Board and the University of Michigan in late November, the CCI is 43.4 percentage points higher than the UMI. That’s close to a record; the latest reading stands at the 98th percentile of all monthly readings of the past four decades.
Furthermore, as you can see from the chart above, a recession was in the economy’s not-too-distant future (shadowed bars) the past four times this difference rose to even 25 percentage points.
Consumer sentiment and the stock market
Stark as this chart’s correlations are, it’s difficult for a sample with just four observations to be statistically significant. To test this indicator’s potential, I next measured its ability to predict the S&P 500’s SPX, -0.73% inflation-adjusted total return over the subsequent one- and five-year periods. The table below reflects data since 1979, which is when monthly data for both of these consumer indices first began to be reported.
When divergence between CCI and UMI was… S&P 500’s average total real return over subsequent 12 months S&P 500’s average total real return over subsequent 5 years (annualized)
In the highest 10% of monthly readings since 1979 -0.4% -3.1%
In the lowest 10% of monthly readings since 1979 +14.3% +14.8%
The differences shown in this table are statistically significant at the 95% confidence level that statisticians often use when determining if a pattern is genuine.
The bottom line? It’s not good news, for the economy in general or the U.S. stock market in particular, that consumers are so much more upbeat about the overall economy than they are about their immediate financial circumstances.

Mish<>Nearly the Entire Yield Curve is Inverted From 6 months to 30 Years
Chart Notes and Synopsis
On the horizontal axis, F stands for Effective Fed Funds Rate (EFFR).
The 3 and 6 represent months. I extrapolated rates between years equally.
A few days ago the 10-year and 30-year bonds inverted and remain inverted.
The EFFR is 3.83 percent. It is inverted with every bond of 5-years duration and longer.
The Fed will likely hike rates next week by 50 basis points. That would put the EFFR at 4.33% and invert the EFFR with every bond of 2 years duration and longer.
The 20-year bond trades little and is an anomaly best ignored, effectively making nearly the entire chart inverted.
Treasury Yields May 24 to December 9 2022
Treasury Yields May 24 to December 9 2022
Significant Inversions
The highly watched 2-10 inversion is (3.57-4.33) 76 basis points.
The 1-year note is inverted with the 10-year note by (3.57-4.72) 115 basis points.
Yellow highlights represent a period that the treasury did not issue 30-year bonds.

North Carolina vs. Indiana score, takeaways: Undefeated Hoosiers stay hot as Tar Heels' slide continues
Hoosiers forward Trayce Jackson-Davis notched a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds.
Indiana secured its fourth win over a ranked team under coach Mike Woodson and one its most important momentum-building moments Wednesday as the No. 10 Hoosiers downed No. 18 North Carolina 77-65 in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge finale. Indiana led for more than 37 minutes of play in the impressive showing, stifling UNC on defense and sending it packing to extend the preseason No. 1 Tar Heels' losing streak to three.
Defense was the catalyst that keyed Indiana to its biggest win of the young season. Against a UNC team that came in ranked 11th nationally in adjusted offensive efficiency, IU held the Tar Heels to 20 of 59 (34%) shooting from the floor and converted 17 points off 10 forced turnovers in the game to lift it past the finish line.
Senior star Trayce Jackson-Davis was big as per usual for Indiana, turning in a game-high 21 points, 10 rebounds and ndiana secured its fourth win over a ranked team under coach Mike Woodson and one its most important momentum-building moments Wednesday as the No. 10 Hoosiers downed No. 18 North Carolina 77-65 in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge finale. Senior backcourt partner Xavier Johnson added 20 points and 8 rebounds as Woodson went nine-deep into his bench to get nearly everyone involved in the action.
Wednesday night was the continuation of two quite opposite trajectories for both Indiana and for North Carolina, the latter of which has suffered three consecutive defeats dating back to its participation last week in the PK85. On the other hand, Indiana has now won its opening seven games, marking the first 7-0 start for the program since 2019-20.
Here are three takeaways from the game.
1. North Carolina has lost its swagger
It's hard to imagine, but less than eight months ago, the nucleus of this Carolina team -- missing only Brady Manek from its starting lineup for this year -- was playing Kansas in the NCAA championship having put together a magical March run. This team, as you might expect, garnered plenty of preseason buzz because of how it finished the season and who it brought back. This team, though, just has not clicked in the way it did to end last season. Its shot selection, particularly at the guard spots, has not been great; its shooting overall has been well below average, likely related to selection; and its stars have not been up to the task. It's not one thing that has derailed UNC's start to the season, but rather an accumulation of small things that have added up to make this team feel ... off. It was preseason No. 1 for a reason, and it has the goods to get back on track at some point, but its swagger has been stunted.
2. Indiana validating preseason hype
In what looked to be a wide-open Big Ten this season, Indiana earned love as the conference's preseason favorite in the media poll. And so far that seems like it was either spot on or really darn close to being spot on -- depending on what you think of Purdue or Illinois so far. A win over this version of North Carolina by no means signals Indiana has arrived, but it won in impressive fashion against a team that, while struggling, is still borderline top-25 caliber. This Hoosiers team is top-heavy and deep in a way that makes it on paper one of the true contenders in the Big Ten and beyond.
3. Jalen Hood-Schifino is a budding star
Trayce Jackson-Davis is a superstar who can carry Indiana regardless of the talent around him. You know senior Xavier Johnson is going to be steady. But Jalen Hood-Schifino's sudden arrival, if this is indeed prescriptive, can signal a different and more dangerous Indiana team may be bubbling. Hood-Schifino was a top-30 recruit coming out of high school, and he's already looking the part of a potential one-and-done with his length and smooth scoring ability. If his breakout against UNC is a sign of things to come, then he's a high-end luxury for a team that already had top-10 potential.

HIGH Stakes-For HOOSIERS, it's time to shine~
ESPN 9:20 PM
Bloomington IU vs NC
Welcome to Wednesday night's nationally televised Indiana basketball showcase, where ultra-hyped fans are asked to wear white, the chance to make a national statement remains in play, and No. 10/8 Indiana (6-0) hosts No. 18/15 North Carolina (5-2) in what reportedly will be the last Big Ten-ACC Challenge.
Jackson-Davis, IU's All-America senior forward, can't wait.
When the stage is higher, it makes me want to shine brighter," he says. "I live for big-time moments. This is huge for me and my teammates."
The Hoosiers have cracked the top-10 for the first time since the start of the 2016-17 season. The Tar Heels, last season's national runner-up, just lost their No. 1 ranking.
"We play with a chip on our shoulders," Jackson-Davis says. "We know we're one of the best teams in the country. We have to play like that or teams will bring it to us."
IU coach Mike Woodson is well aware of the stakes.
"North Carolina is a big-time team," he says, "this a big-time game, and we'll see what we're made of."
Losing a pair of tough, physical games to Iowa State and Alabama as part of last week's Phil Knight Invitational in Oregon dropped North Carolina in the AP and coaches' polls, but not in Woodson's appreciation for Tar Heel quality.
"They're battle tested," Woodson says. "They were in the (national) championship game last season. They know what it's like to have their backs to the wall. We're not taking this team lightly. They're well coached. They have a lot of talent. We have to commit ourselves for 40 minutes."
IU has done that so far, mostly impressively in the Nov. 18 victory at Xavier. It limits opponents to 59.3 points and 36.8% shooting. It's held four teams to less than 60 points. Offensively, it averages 88.8 points and shoots 55.9% from the field, 38.3% from beyond the arc.
"I like what we've done in these six games," Woodson says. "You do the best you can. You always learn something about your team. Wednesday is another challenge to see where we are."
North Carolina's defeats came after a series of less-than-dominant performances. The Tar Heels trailed Portland and Charleston deep into the second half, and struggled to put away Gardner-Webb and UNC Wilmington.
In Oregon, North Carolina lost in four overtimes to Alabama, and lost a late lead against Iowa State.
Still, the Tar Heels are formidable, from the quality of the current team to the rich tradition that includes six national championships.
"To be considered one of the best teams," Jackson-Davis says, "you have to beat the best teams.
"They were in the national championship game last year. They've dropped two games, but I know they'll be hungry. They will battle. We'll have to battle, too. We have to bring it. It will be electric."
Defense, 3-point shooting and allowing offensive rebounding have been Tar Heel problems, but given they have double-double threat Armando Bacot inside, standout guards Caleb Love and RJ Davis outside, and do-it-all-forward Pete Nance where needed, solutions should come sooner rather than later.
Bacot averages 16.7 points and 11.3 rebounds. He's also blocked 11 shots. Love averages a team-leading 20.0 points and 4.9 rebounds, plus has a team-high 24 assists. However, he only shoots 24.5% from 3-point range. Davis averages 15.7 points and 4.9 rebounds. He shoots 27.8% from beyond the arc. Nance, a Northwestern transfer, averages 11.9 points and 5.0 rebounds while shooting a team-leading 41.7% on 3-pointers. He has 10 blocks.
As a team, the Tar Heels shoot 30.8% from 3-point range. Opponents have 84 offensive rebounds to North Carolina's 76.
IU has an imposing frontcourt with Jackson-Davis (18.8 points, 8.0 rebounds), veteran forward Race Thompson (8.2, 5.2) and freshman forward Malik Reneau (10.7, 4.7).
"They have a big dinosaur coming down in Armando," guard Xavier Johnson says. "We have two or three big dinosaurs as well that are ready to compete at a high level."
Jackson-Davis and guard Trey Galloway are battling minor injuries that have sidelined them recently. They used the five-day break between games to rest.
"If they can't play, it's next man up," Woodson says. "That's the kind of team I've always wanted to have. Injuries occur. Everybody probably won't make it through the season. When guys get hurt, there's not a lot you can do. You can't wait on them. You have to push the guys who are ready."
Jackson-Davis says he's not "100%," but he's playing.
"Adrenaline will be flowing," he says. "I'll be fine. I'll play my hardest. They'll have to take me out on a stretcher."
Depth and fatigue could be factors. North Carolina coach Hubert Davis basically plays an eight-man rotation. Plus, jet lag could be in play given the Tar Heels flew from Oregon to Bloomington, arriving on Monday. The Hoosiers go 10 deep, and can play more if needed.
"We have two starting 5s," Jackson-Davis says. "We platoon. It will wear and tear on them. We can throw different bodies on different people. As that game goes along, that will be a huge part of it."
Adds Woodson: "They have five to six guys who play the bulk of the minutes. They are legit. They pose a threat. This is a solid team."
Sophomore guard Tamar Bates is a catalyst for IU's second unit, averaging 8.5 points off the bench with 12 assists against five turnovers.
"We understand that we're just as important as the first five," he says. "We come in with the mentality of executing whatever the game calls for. We understand the whole team is as strong as the bench, so us being on the scout and guys having to really worry about who comes in down to the ninth man, we just know that that just makes us even scarier."
If this is the last Big Ten-ACC Challenge (IU is 8-13 in the event, 5-4 at home), Woodson says he'll look for another quality non-conference opponent moving forward.
"My thing is, I'm always looking for competition. We've got enough of it this season to see where our team is."
As for possible future opponents, he adds, "We hope we get Kentucky. It doesn't get much bigger than that.
"We'll figure it out as we go along. I try to make our schedule as competitive as I can. We've done that, and if we can keep it going, that would be great. We'll find another big-time team and get a game scheduled."
That's for later. For now, for the Hoosiers, it comes down to this Jackson-Davis message, to Reneau, to freshman guard Jalen Hood-Schifino, and to all the Hoosiers:
"Play as hard as you can. If you do, I promise good things will happen."
Thanks got it! YES, and go IU again!
Will get back again soon, I don't know much yet

Disinflation stations>
A look at the day ahead in U.S. and global markets from Mike Dolan.
As scrambling relief rallies go, that was a whopper. Now the hard thinking sets it.
A year ago, the prospect of a 7.7% annual inflation rate 12 months on would
have been shocking.

AMEN- Preaching to the choir
Mark Hulbert; Curb your enthusiasm — Thursday’s explosive rally in stocks likely means the bear market is alive and well
Despite Thursday’s explosive rally in stocks, it’s likely we’re still mired in a bear market.
In fact, the magnitude of the surge itself suggests the bear is still alive and well.
Consider all trading days since the Nasdaq Composite Index COMP, +31.35% was created in 1971 in which it gained — as it did Thursday — more than 6%. Twenty of 26 of those days prior to Thursday occurred during a bear market, or 77% of the time, according to Ned Davis Research.
So big daily rallies occur at nearly three times the frequency you’d expect if they were to be randomly distributed across both bull and bear markets.
To be sure, you should never base an investment decision on just one indicator. But these statistics definitely throw cold water on the enthusiasm that is otherwise so much in evidence on Wall Street.
It shouldn’t surprise you that explosive rallies occur more frequently during bear markets than otherwise. Bear markets typically don’t come to an end until investors throw in the towel in despair and swear off equities — sometimes referred to as capitulation.
Until then, hope springs eternal, and beleaguered investors eagerly jump back into the market when there’s even a sliver of good news. They got that sliver Thursday morning before the market opened with an inflation report that showed slowing price growth

Ohio State breaks scoring record for consecutive 20-point games despite defensive battle vs. Northwestern
The 70-game streak dates back to the early days of Ryan Day's time as an assistant for the Buckeyes
The win in week 10 wasn't a thing of beauty, but the Buckeyes nevertheless set a Football Bowl Championship record by eclipsing 20 points in a game for a 70th consecutive time dating back to 2017. Oklahoma previously held the Division I FBS record at 69 straight games with at least 20 points.
The last time Ohio State failed to score 20 points in a game was the famous "Flag Plant" game against Oklahoma when the Buckeyes lost 31-16 to Baker Mayfield's Sooners. Quarterback J.T. Barrett threw for just 183 yards and an interception in the loss, which came during the early days of coach Ryan Day's stint as co-offensive coordinator. The Buckeyes beat Army 38-7 one week later, starting the current streak.
Since that infamous game, the Buckeyes have recruited and developed one of the best passing games in college football year in and year out. Since Day's first season on campus, Ohio State has produced a pair of first-round quarterbacks and first-round receivers, with Stroud and receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba poised to join the list in 2023. The offense has also hit another level since Day was promoted to head coach, averaging 45.2 points per game in 44 games.
