Design Revealed for Doomsday Seed Vault
By Charles Q. Choi
LiveScience.com
(Feb. 8) - Designs for a doomsday vault for seeds of the world, to be carved deep into frozen rock on an island not far from the North Pole, were revealed today by the government of Norway.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Construction on the vault is set to start next month and finish in September. The official opening is planned for late 2008.
The Svalbard International Seed Vault, first annnounced last year, will act like a Noah's Ark for nearly every food crop of every country, to safeguard the agricultural heritage of humankind in the face of increasing global environmental changes. "The Norwegian government hopes to contribute to combating the loss of biological diversity, to reduce our vulnerability to climatic changes, and to enhance our ability to secure future food production," said Norway's minister of agriculture and food Terje Riis-Johansen.
Vast Diversity
A vast diversity in crops exists across the planet.
"There are, for instance, well over 100,000 distinct varieties of rice, compared to the 400 or so breeds of dog out there," Cary Fowler, executive director of the Global Crop Diversity Trust, told LiveScience. "These represent all the options that crops have for developing in the future, the raw material for plant evolution."
These distinct varieties may possess extraordinary and possibly unique traits in terms of taste, nutritional quality, pest and disease resistance, or adaptability to various environments. For example, some rice species can grow as much as 20 feet underwater, Fowler explained, or in semi-arid conditions.

Global Warming Wakes Groundhogs Earlier Global Warming Linked to Stronger Hurricanes Key Found to the Smell of the Sea Serious Climate Change: Winds Blew in Reverse... Pesticides Could Stunt Growth of Clams and... At the same time, "every day that passes, we lose crop biodiversity," Fowler said. For instance, of the 7,100 named varieties of apples grown in the United States in the 1800s, more than 6,800 no longer exist.
"Given the option of modern varieties of agricultural crops, which are often more productive, farmers often make a rational economic decision to grow those varieties, and older traditional varieties can literally just be eaten up in a bowl of porridge and go extinct," Fowler said.
The Global Crop Diversity Trust is helping to fund the vault's operations and pay for the preparation and transport of seeds to the Arctic isle of Svalbard. The island was chosen for the vault in part because its ground is perpetually frozen permafrost. This means it can provide natural backup refrigeration to help preserve seeds, should electricity fail.
Still, project architects also considered how to offset any potential impacts that worst-case scenarios of global warming might have on the island. For instance, the vault is located roughly 425 feet above sea level. This puts it well above a roughly 20-foot rise in sea level that would accompany the melting of Greenland's ice sheet, or even a 200-foot rise that would come with an unlikely total meltdown of Antarctica.
Cold Storage
Researchers also saw the deeper the vault was, the colder it would remain. To help keep the seeds safely refrigerated, the vault will be located nearly 400 feet into the side of a mountain, ensuring that rising outside air temperatures will not influence the surrounding permafrost. At the end of this tunnel, the project will build two chambers capable of holding a total of three million seed samples, making it the largest such seed bank in the world [Views of the entrance].
"Even climate change over the next 200 years will not significantly affect the permafrost temperature," said project manager Magnus Bredeli Tveiten, with the Norwegian government's directorate of public construction and property.
While scientists are not sure what the precise impacts of potential climate changes might be, "we certainly know it's going to have a major impact on certain growing areas and affect the diversity in the field," Fowler said. "So climate change will both pose a threat to the diversity we have, and make that diversity much more valuable."
The project's cornerstone was laid in June 2006. Construction is set to start in March 2007 and to finish in September 2007, with an official opening planned in late winter 2008.
Man frees grandson from anaconda death grip Fri Feb 9, 10:30 AM ET
SAO PAULO (Reuters) - A 66-year-old Brazilian man wrestled with a 15-foot (5-meter) anaconda for nearly half an hour to free his grandson from the snake's crushing death grip, a newspaper reported Friday.
Matheus Pereira de Araujo, 8, would likely be dead inside the belly of the 80 pound (35 kg) anaconda if his grandfather had not heard his screams for help, zoologists said.
Anacondas, the biggest snakes in the world, are nonvenomous and kill prey by asphyxiation.
Araujo was playing with friends near a creek on his grandfather's farm in Cosmorama, 310 miles west of Sao Paulo, Wednesday when the snake attacked him.
"It was very fast. I didn't have time to do anything," the Folha de S. Paulo newspaper quoted Araujo as saying by. "My grandfather is a hero -- I was so afraid of dying."
Joaquim Pereira was driving home when he heard his grandson screaming. He jumped into the ravine and grappled with the snake, which started coiling around him as well.
Pereira attacked it with stones and a machete and killed it.
"It was the most terrible scene that I've seen in my life," Pereira said. "It was totally coiled around him while he was screaming that he was dying."

Originally New York Inc Announces Name Change To United Ethanol Group, Inc
Friday February 2, 12:09 pm ET
John H. Rivera Appointed Chairman of The Board
CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--"Originally New York, Inc," the parent company of Diversified Ethanol, (OTCBB:ONYI - News) has announced that it is changing its name to "United Ethanol Group, Inc." The new name will more accurately represent its business, and considerately accommodate other companies wishing to be part of a consolidation movement in the ethanol industry, sharing technology and resources. Furthermore, the company announced it has named John H. Rivera Chairman of the Board of Directors effective immediately. Mr. Rivera is currently CEO and Chairman of the Board of Directors of U.S. Sustainable Energy Corp., (Other OTC:USSE - News).
Company CEO Taylor Moffitt commented, "We are very pleased with the progress we have made towards the previously announced integration of our company with U.S. Sustainable Energy Corp. ( USSE ) . Their blockbuster technology enables us to substantially reduce the costs of producing ethanol. We will make it available freely to all privileged members of the United Ethanol Group, a consolidation movement in the ethanol industry. The USSE boutique of unique green biofuels is dedicated to the elimination of the U.S. dependence on foreign oil. Together, we will reduce the cost of the U.S. and world energy markets. Our revolutionary fuels will reduce costs in transportation businesses spanning from trucking, railroads and shipping. We will actually become our own first customer in the transportation industry, as our feedstock and fuels will be shipped and delivered economically using our own breakthrough fuels to power the trains, trucks and barges that will service our plants."
Further updates on the culmination of our partnership with USSE will be made available to investors immediately as they are concluded.
Commenting further, Mr. Rivera stated, "Furthering our quest to dominate and become the leader of the global ethanol marketplace, we will be building plants to be supported by the excess energy generated by USSE and our subsidiary Sustainable Power Corp. (SPC). "Using Diversified Ethanol's ultrasonic low frequency technology, we will obtain up to 30% more sugars from the corn that will be processed," according to independent university research. In addition, according to industry experts, "We expect we will also save between 30-35% on our energy costs in producing ethanol and making our product the most cost competitive ASTM certified 200 proof ethanol anywhere in the world."
"In addition to our existing ethanol boutique, we now have the ability to produce ethanol using energy from cow, pig, and chicken waste as well as forestry products, giving us an insatiable supply of non-food wastes to be converted into fuel. We can turn these wastes into "green" gold - ethanol. While chemically identical to ethanol produced from other energy sources, this green ethanol production emits a lower net level of greenhouse gases, while cleaning up many problems otherwise caused these wastes. Recent technological developments are not only improving yields but also driving down production cost, bringing us closer to the day when ethanol will replace expensive, foreign "black gold" with a sustainable, domestically produced biofuel."

About the AnuCyte Cancer Detection System
The AnuCyte Cancer Detection System is an automated machine that can rapidly detect any form of cancer. The system accurately identifies cancer at any stage in its development and also identifies healthy cancer-free cells in the same test within the same sample. The system eliminates heretofore unreliable, subjective, and error-prone pathology detection of cancer and delivers an automated and objective measurement of the presence or absence of cancer. The AnuCyte system is the first and only system in the world that uses the measurement of advanced chromosomal imbalance as the primary or sole means of detecting cancer. System testing in collaboration with the Cleveland Clinic and Texas Southwestern University demonstrated AnuCyte to successfully detect cancerous and precancerous cells in hundreds of cervical samples and scores of fine needle aspirates from breast tumors. The company is not aware of any automated system in the world more accurate, or even close to AnuCyte's accuracy.
About AnuCyte's Inventors:
The inventor of the AnuCyte system, Dr. David Rasnick, PhD and his scientific research collaborator, Dr. Peter Duesberg, PhD, have been prominent names internationally for many years for their research and publications. On many occasions both have appeared internationally on television, in magazines, newspapers and scientific publications. Peter Duesberg is author of the widely available book: ``Inventing the AIDS Virus.'' Investors may wish to read a recent article in Newsweek concerning the cancer research of Peter Duesberg:

Ex-pro wrestler 'Bam Bam' Bigelow dies Mon Jan 22, 5:53 PM ET
HUDSON, Fla. - Scott "Bam Bam" Bigelow, the tattooed heavyweight professional TV wrestler, has died. He was 45.
He was found dead in his home on Friday, his brother Todd Bigelow said Monday.
Preliminary autopsy results did not show signs of foul play, but a cause of death will not be known until toxicology tests are completed in a few weeks, Pasco County sheriff's spokesman Doug Tobin said.
Bigelow had been struggling with a persistent infection and diabetes, his brother said.
Bigelow wrestled with Hulk Hogan and Andre the Giant during his two decades as a sports entertainer. Bigelow's flame-tattooed scalp and 6-foot-2, 400-pound frame made him recognizable in and out of the ring. He retired in 2004.
A service is planned for Friday in his hometown of Neptune, N.J.

Sponges and kitchen scrub brushes can be loaded with disease-causing viruses and bacteria.
So microwave them, scientists say.
Researchers soaked sponges and scrubbers in a disgusting brew of raw wastewater containing fecal bacteria, viruses, protozoan parasites and bacterial spores, including Bacillus cereus spores—known for being very hard to kill with heat, chemicals and even radiation.
Zapping at full power for two minutes killed or inactivated 99 percent of living pathogens. It took 4 minutes to destroy the B. cereus spores.
“People often put their sponges and scrubbers in the dishwasher, but if they really want to decontaminate them and not just clean them, they should use the microwave," said Gabriel Bitton, a professor of environmental engineering at the University of Florida.
The study was announced today and was detailed in the December issue of the Journal of Environmental Health.
Other studies have shown that sponges and dishcloths are common carriers of pathogens from uncooked eggs, meat and other food. Damp objects help them thrive.
The researchers suggest wetting the objects—water being heated by the microwave seems to play a role in the sterilization—before zapping them every other day or so.

Waters' suicide tied to brain damage Thu Jan 18, 6:04 PM ET
NEW YORK - Brain damage caused on the football field ultimately led to the suicide of former NFL defensive back Andre Waters, according to a forensic pathologist who studied Waters' brain tissue.
Bennet Omalu of the University of Pittsburgh told The New York Times that Waters' brain tissue resembled that of an 85-year-old man and that there were characteristics of early stage Alzheimer's. Omalu told the newspaper he believed the damage was related to multiple concussions Waters sustained during his 12-year NFL career with the Philadelphia Eagles and Arizona Cardinals.
Waters was 44 when he committed suicide last November.
Omalu said trauma was a significant factor in Waters' brain damage, "no matter how you look at it, distort it, bend it."
The pathologist also told the newspaper the signs of depression that family members described Waters as exhibiting in his final years likely was caused by the brain trauma. Had he lived, Omalu said, the former player would have been fully incapacitated within 10 years.
The Alzheimer's Association Web site reports "there appears to be a strong link between serious head injury and future risk of Alzheimer's." The statement did not distinguish between a single catastrophic trauma and lesser repetitive injuries.
"Whatever its cause, Andre Waters' suicide is a tragic incident and our hearts go out to his family," NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said Thursday.
"The subject of concussions is complex. We are devoting substantial resources to independent medical research of current and retired players, strict enforcement of enhanced player safety rules, development and testing of better equipment, and comprehensive medical management of this injury. This work over the past decade has contributed significantly to the understanding of concussions and the advancement of player safety."
Omalu began his research at the request of Chris Nowinski, a former Harvard football player and professional wrestler whose career was ended by multiple concussions. After hearing of Waters' suicide, Nowinski called Waters' sister, Sandra Pinkney, and asked permission to do further investigation on her brother's remains.
Pinkney agreed. In mid-December, Nowinski shipped four pieces of Waters' brain from Florida to Omalu in Pennsylvania.
Nowinski chose Omalu because he had examined the brains of two former Pittsburgh Steelers players who were discovered to have brain trauma after sustaining concussions — Mike Webster, who suffered brain damage and became homeless before dying of heart failure in 2002, and Terry Long, who killed himself in 2005.
Waters' family said they hope further research will change the way the NFL — and all athletic organizations — treat concussions.
"I just want there to be more teaching and for them to take the proper steps as far as treating them," Kwana Pittman, Waters' niece, told the newspaper. "Don't send them back out on those fields. They boost it up in their heads that, you know, 'You tough, you tough.'"

Commercial jet flies with anti-missile system
LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- An MD-10 cargo jet equipped with Northrop Grumman's Guardian anti-missile system took off from Los Angeles International Airport on a commercial flight Tuesday, the company said.
The FedEx flight marked the start of operational testing and evaluation of the laser system designed to defend against shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missiles during takeoffs and landings.
Adapted from military technology, Guardian is designed to detect a missile launch and then direct a laser to the seeker system on the head of the missile and disrupt its guidance signals. The laser is not visible and is eye-safe, the company said.
"For the first time, we will be able to collect valuable logistics data while operating Guardian on aircraft in routine commercial service," said Robert L. DelBoca, vice president and general manager of Northrop Grumman's Defensive Systems Division.
During the current test phase, which concludes in March 2008, nine MD-10s equipped with the Guardian system will be in commercial service. Katie Lamb-Heinz of Northrop Grumman Electronic Systems said all those aircraft will be freighters. The ultimate goal is to defend passenger airliners.
The testing is part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Counter-Man Portable Air Defense Systems program. BAE Systems has also been working for the government on a similar airliner defense system and has successfully tested it.
John Pike, a defense analyst at GlobalSecurity.org, an Alexandria, Virginia., think tank, suggested that development of the system was the lesser of issues for the airline industry.
"I think the problem is making the numbers work in the sense of figuring out who's going to pay for it," he said.
More than capital costs, airlines are likely to be most concerned about the costs of maintenance and aircraft downtime, he said.
"They've gotten these airliners now (so) that they are just remarkably maintenance-free. They've also gotten these airlines to the point that they've got razor thin margins," he said.
Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-California, viewed the plane Monday and said she was encouraged.
"This program is very promising because it's already met the operational testing. Now it's a question of how does it actually work in terms of stresses on the system while the airplane is in operation for several hours," said Boxer, a longtime proponent of equipping planes with anti-missile technology.
Boxer said her first priority is to equip the Civil Reserve Air Fleet, more than 1,000 commercial airplanes operated by airlines that contract with the Pentagon to make military flights during emergencies.
No passenger plane has ever been downed by a shoulder-fired missile outside of a combat zone. But terrorists linked with al Qaeda are believed to have fired two SA-7 missiles that narrowly missed an Israeli passenger jet after it took off from Mombasa, Kenya, in November 2002.
The first commercial flight with the Guardian system followed 16 months of tests on an MD-11, an MD-10 and a Boeing 747 using simulated launches of shoulder-fired missiles.
The Guardian system appears as a pod with eye-like features attached to the belly of the FedEx MD-10, a freight version of what was originally the three-engine widebody DC-10 airliner.
DHS gave Northrop Grumman and BAE Systems $45 million each in 2004 to adapt military defense systems to civilian airliners, requiring improvements because military systems need too much maintenance and mistakenly fire too often.
A government report obtained by The Associated Press last summer said that both the Northrop Grumman and BAE Systems prototypes still don't meet the reliability standards set by the DHS, and it could be 20 years before every U.S. passenger airplane has such a system.
Billions of dollars would have to be spent to protect all 6,800 commercial U.S. airliners.
The report said testing showed that the systems can be installed on commercial aircraft without impairing safety; at least one company can supply 1,000 systems at a cost of $1 million each; and operation and maintenance will cost $365 per flight, above the $300-per-flight goal.
Northrop Grumman said Tuesday that during the 16-month flight test program a ground-based "electronic missile surrogate" was used to simulate launches and each time Guardian functioned as designed, automatically detecting the simulated launch and mock missile.
"Had the threats been real, an invisible laser beam safe to humans would have disrupted the missile guidance system and protected the aircraft," the company statement said.
Iran president says Israel would not dare attack
MADRID (Reuters) - Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said neither Israel, nor the United States, would dare attack the Islamic Republic over its nuclear program, a Spanish newspaper quoted him as saying in an interview.
The Iranian president was responding to a question on a recent article by Britain's Sunday Times that Israel had secret plans to destroy Iran's uranium enrichment facilities with tactical nuclear weapons.
"They well know the power of the Iranian people. I don't think they would ever dare to attack us, neither them nor their masters. They won't do such a stupid thing," Ahmadinejad told El Mundo during a visit to Nicaragua, referring to Israel.
Conservative Iranian leaders, such as Ahmadinejad, see Israel as a stooge of the United States in the Middle East.
Iran does not recognize Israel and Ahmadinejad has previously called for Israel to be "wiped off the map."
"That regime wants to hurt the Iranian people. They have many dreams but they are not all powerful," said the Iranian leader.
Israel has refused to rule out pre-emptive military action against Iran along the lines of its 1981 air strike against an atomic reactor in Iraq, although many analysts think Iran's nuclear facilities are too much for Israel to destroy alone.
Asked about whether he wants to see Israel destroyed, Ahmadinejad avoided a direct answer, but seemed to refer to an earlier statement in which had said that Israel would be wiped out "just as the Soviet Union was wiped out."
"Where is the Soviet Union?" he told El Mundo, "It has disappeared."
The U.N. Security Council voted unamimously last month to impose sanctions on Iran to try to stop its uranium enrichment program, which Tehran insists is peaceful.
The United States, which suspects Iran wants nuclear weapons, says it wants a diplomatic solution to the deadlock but military force remains an option.
Israel has said it will not allow Iran to acquire nuclear weapons.
