“It’s a scientific discipline, but how you make it can be an art form,” Bloom said. “Once you figure out how to produce it, it’s very re-produceable.”
He said he’s unfamiliar with Neah’s PowerChip, but looks forward to working on it.
“It presents an interesting challenge, no question about it,” Bloom said.
Neah Power will work with the laboratory near Chicago for a year. The laboratory time and expertise is valued at $300,000.
Neah Power was based in Bothell, but is relocating to Edmonds. The batteries are manfuctured in Beaverton, Oregon. The company is developing a high-density, rechargeable lithium metal battery called Neah PowerChip Battery for defense, commercial and consumer uses.
The unique architecture using lithium metal and porous silicon is making the battery five times more powerful than batteries in production today, D’Couto said.
Theoretical modeling of the battery shows that it should be producing even more energy storage and output than it already does, D’Couto said.
With assistance of the national laboratory, Neah Power hopes to identify the changes that need to be made so the practical application matches up with the theoretical modeling.
There’s long been a search to build a better battery that can store and produce more energy and “live forever and cost nothing,” said Ira Bloom, senior chemist and group leader at Argonne National Laboratory.
He pointed to the carbon zinc batteries at hardware stores, noting how they come in many shapes and sizes. He said changing the battery’s chemistery also changes everything.
“I hope everybody learns from this project.”
The PowerChip Battery is already generating interest.
Neah Power has a deal with Santa Rosa, California,-firm Liquid Image to produce 100 batteries for wearable police body cameras. Those batteries are expected to hold enough charge for 13 hours instead of four hours with current standard rechargeable batteries, D’Couto said.
If testing is successful, Liquid Image wants to buy 200,000 PowerChip Batteries.
This type of battery technology could also be used for the increasing number of electric vehicles, D’Couto said. And that could extend the range for electric cars by hundreds of miles.
The design uses the same manufacturing technologies that made television sets, cell phones and laptops more compact and capable, D’Couto said.
So it could be manufactured at existing semiconductor foundries around the world.
The laboratory time comes under the U.S. Department of Energy’s Small Business Vouchers Pilot Program, which is awarding $20 million in grants businesses across the nation developing clean energy technologies.

PROJECT INNOVATION + ADVANTAGES
In addition to utilizing existing manufacturing technology, the battery uses existing materials for the anode, cathode, the separator and the electrolytes. This reduces the risk of new materials adoption and testing. The technology also includes a unique approach using microchip geometry to control dendrite growth. The understanding acquired through the project will improve the manufacturing of the porous silicon, in particular the metallization process. This will help the company achieve target metrics on cost, and performance, and allow longer cycle lifetime for the battery.
a three-dimensional porous silicon based lithium-metal battery that has demonstrated 1,500 watts per liter of volume and 500 watts per kilogram. This battery uses older generation computer chip manufacturing technology that is widely available throughout the world, enabling a low cost, which the company targets at $150 per kilowatt hour in high volume production. Such a low price point would make the battery applicable across industries, from small devices such as cell phones to larger applications for stationary power, automotive and grid-scale back up. Such a foundry model allows a low capital-cost ramp up into high volume production, with very high quality control. Through the SBV Pilot, the company will utilize Argonne National Laboratory staff and expertise to determine the optimal metallization scheme for porous silicon as well as reliable and reproducible processes and insights into possible causes of degradation, capacity fade and dendrite growth.

According to Dr. Chris D'Couto, Neah Power's CEO and the featured guest in the interview below, a five kilowatt hour fuel cell running off a tank of liquid formic acid would be configured to trickle charge an electric vehicle's battery, allowing it, like the gasoline engine generator in the BMW i3 REx, to offer extended range capability. Unlike the i3 REx, the only tailpipe emission would be water vapor and CO2.

Daimler also announced new battery factories to support its electric vehicle production. They recently inaugurated a new plant in Germany and they announced a new $740 million battery factory in China for Mercedes-Benz’s EVs.
Since announcing its plan to build 2 to 3 million electric cars a year and to unveil 30 new models by 2025 – across all its brands (VW, Audi, Porsche, etc.), Volkswagen has been rumored to be planning to build one or more giant battery factory to support this plan.
But the German automaker has yet to confirm any plan to build one, though they now admitted seeing a need for 40 Gigafactory-size battery factories for electric vehicles by 2025.
Ulrich Eichhorn, head of r&d for VW, made the comment to reporters on June 30 during a presentation – via Auto News Europe.
The executive estimates that the Volkswagen group alone would need 200 GWh of battery cell production by 2025 and his reference to 40 Tesla Gigafactories was for the entire auto industry assuming that all other automakers are also targeting 25% of their production to be electric vehicles on average by then.

For when the sun don't shine....IKEA gold ....(see stickie notice the other one was removed LOL)
Ikea said it would start selling batteries for rooftop solar panels which could save consumers hundreds of pounds on their electricity bills.
Storage technologies which allow customers to use the electricity created by solar panels when the sun isn’t shining have been prohibitively expensive in the past, and are seen as one of the key obstacles for solar power to overcome.
The company said its new product could save each household up to £560 per year on its electricity bills, when compared to traditional supply. Using solar panels without storage can save up to £380 per year, Ikea said on Wednesday.
Ikea to create 1,300 UK jobs in post-Brexit boost for retail sector
There is a big up-front cost of £6,925 for the solar panel and battery kit, but the company estimates that customers will make their money back over 12 years.
The new solar system is being produced in partnership with UK panel provider Solar Century.
The Moixa Smart Battery is a wall-mounted device that is comprised of lithium-ion phosphate technology. It is AC-coupled and so can take advantage of smart tariffs by importing power from the grid when it is cheap. The battery has direct USB ports to enable phone and other device charging, and can support LED lighting. Moixa has so far installed 600 of these devices across the U.K., delivering 1.3 Mwh of combined storage capacity.
Solarcentury founding director and Moixa investor Jeremy Leggett said that the combination of solar and storage holds the key to decarbonizing the U.K.?s electricity system, which has already proved its worth in recent months by outperforming coal. "Solar plus storage? allows homes to provide back-up capacity that enables the grid to use more clean renewable power and reduces the need for coal, diesel and gas to meet peak demand," said Leggett.
The U.K.?s "smart power revolution" is a newly launched goal developed with the aim of greening the grid. Storage and demand flexibility are projected to play a leading role in this transition, and could lead to savings of more than £8 billion ($10.1 billion) between now and 2050, according to the National Infrastructure Commission?s Smart Power report.

...three weeks ago ... met with Daimler who has asked us to put together an MOU to develop and test the next generation of automobile batteries. Two weeks ago ... met with the venture arm of IKEA who will invest in XNRGI and would like a US co-investment at a pre- money valuation range of $105M to $120M....
From Bills email...
The IKEA investment if you read the email carefully is not in NEAH, it is in XNRGI ( if the email is real ) and they want to see a concurrent "other" investment
"met with the venture arm of IKEA who will invest in XNRGI and would like a US co-investment at a pre- money valuation range of $105M to $120M.... ".
Not something for nothing, they want someone else to invest before they put money in the pot.

Company Name: Neah Power Systems
Program Office: Advanced Manufacturing
Location: Bothell, WA
Website: neahpower.com
EMAIL: Dr. Chris D’Couto, President & CEO; cdcouto@neahpower.com
Award Amount: $300,000
Project Term: 12 months
Project Status: In Progress
Participating Lab(s): Argonne National Laboratory
PROJECT INNOVATION + ADVANTAGES
In addition to utilizing existing manufacturing technology, the battery uses existing materials for the anode, cathode, the separator and the electrolytes. This reduces the risk of new materials adoption and testing. The technology also includes a unique approach using microchip geometry to control dendrite growth. The understanding acquired through the project will improve the manufacturing of the porous silicon, in particular the metallization process. This will help the company achieve target metrics on cost, and performance, and allow longer cycle lifetime for the battery.
POTENTIAL IMPACT
Economy:
Developing new technologies that can piggyback on older industries preserves jobs, utilizes existing infrastructure and fosters opportunities in advanced manufacturing, including domestic job creation.
Environment:
Electric vehicles reduce pollution associated with gasoline combustion. Electricity storage is also an important complement for renewable electricity systems, which vary in how much power they produce based on local weather conditions.
Security:
Electric vehicles are increasingly cost-competitive with their gasoline counterparts, but consumers will remain hesitant to purchase them until their range grows longer. Higher penetration for such vehicles can dramatically reduce U.S. gasoline consumption and the country's resulting reliance on overseas oil markets.

NEW VIDEO:
https://vimeo.com/231188779
Paul Sidlo has a new XNRGI video showing the safety of the battery.
They take a battery punch a nail through it twice ( normally would short the battery ) then cut the edges and expose the wafer material.
The whole time measuring voltage output which stays steady and temperature which stays steady.
This is impressive !

NREL to update the status to say “In Progress” like the other projects. Somehow it accidently said “12 months” in the status field

As Tesla regularly points out, the lithium-ion battery cells used in electric cars can also serve in home energy-storage units.
Now, a Daimler company will go up against Tesla in that field under the branding of its most famous luxury-car make.
Mercedes-Benz Energy announced yesterday that it is working with Vivint Solar to develop home energy-storage products.

The collaboration marks the first time that the German manufacturer has worked with a U.S. solar company.
Mercedes-Benz, however, has been selling battery systems in Europe and South Africa since early this year, according to The New York Times.
The company's press release says the project will utilize expertise the automaker has honed while developing battery technology for electric vehicles specifically to create new residential batteries.

The project also helps Vivint offer its customers a cohesive solar package for the first time, combining panels with high-quality energy storage systems.
The battery packs themselves, 2.5-kilowatt-hour units, are about the size of a small refrigerator and housed in a sleek case.
Buyers can scale the system to fit their needs, combining units to build up to a 20-kWh bank.

Mercedes-Benz Energy, while owned by Daimler, is a separate organization from the German auto manufacturer.
It's the latest in a line of companies looking to pair renewable, localized energy sources with relatively inexpensive battery solutions.
Tesla has not been shy about highlighting the necessary link between electric vehicles and residential energy production and storage.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk presents Powerwall 2.0 and SolarCity solar roofTesla Powerwall Home BatteryTesla Powerwall 2.0
Its vision of an integrated future includes Tesla products, from solar shingles to home battery banks, that all provide and manage renewable energy that can be used to charge its electric cars.
The New York Times reports that the market for solar panels has slowed in recent months.
That's due in part to legislation that has reduced or eliminated incentives in states like Arizona and Indiana.

Energy storage is the latest push from solar panel manufacturers to help kickstart their sales.
The hope is that linking solar, batteries, and electric vehicles together may prove to be a more convincing model than solar panels as a way to reduce energy costs alone.
Mercedes-Benz Energy and Vivint Solar will begin offering the new batteries in California during the second quarter.

IKEA launches solar battery packs to rival Tesla's Powerwall
Alice Morby | 4 August 2017 7 comments
IKEA is expanding its solar panel offering with a battery-storage solution, which it claims could help homeowners cut their electricity bills by 70 per cent.
The Swedish furniture giant has been selling solar panels since 2013, but has announced it will now also sell battery packs that allow users to store the power generated by the sun and use it whenever they like. This reduces their reliance on the electrical grid and allows them to save more money on their energy bills.
