dmiller....Curious. What does it look like when the company is buying? What are the signs that they are or aren't?
This has actually became a laughable event now. It just shows stock market is not fair nor will it ever be. The manipulators will always control stocks until a time comes it gets away from them and at that time they become victims.
So true, Mickey.. It is sad that the only time those who believe in our markets and trust its integrity have a chance of making money is when a perennially manipulated stock gets away from its "handlers". In the case of IDCC, it has happened twice (since I've been a shareholder): 1999-2000 and 2010.
Rarely is it as apparent, as it is today, how manipulated this share price is. JMO.
Mickey......Regarding the "substantial progress" quote, my information at the time was that both parties had an agreement in principle and Nokia reneged. I don't blame BM for that statement, if my info was correct.
The "infrastructure deal" statement was only made 3 months ago. IMO, 6 months is the cut-off for the definition of short-term. Now is not the time to lose faith. Something is close----something that will make the $800M goal attainable, IMO.
GBR.....and "the US Government"??? Would love to know which part of the US Government joined IDCC to urge the SCOTUS to honor NPE's right to license. Any idea?
TIA.
M3S...I understand and agree. But BM, who never uses the phrase "short-term", did. The other wishful thought that I have is that IDCC, as part of a deal with NOK and MSFT, licenses NOK for infrastructure (the remaining part of their wireless business). Probably more mis-guided dot-connecting on my part, but even after years of shattered dreams, I find it difficult to not take BM at his (literal) word. JMO.
M3S...With all of IDCC's work in Td-scdma, could this possibly be the "infrastructure deal in the short term"?
Never put any credence into after hours trading. The stock traded at a level that MM's were willing to short the stock, confident that they could buy it back the next day, lower. They did pretty well on this one.
OD... Yes, I get all that talked about in the article. However, that does not change my point about ownership or, if you prefer, the "right" to pro rata equity in the subsidiaries. One event that underscores the substance of stock ownership is when a company is bought out. It is pretty straightforward: after bonds, preferred shares and other liabilities are paid off, the remainder goes to the common stockholders. No way around it.
OD......Lest people get the wrong idea (or I am missing something), shareholders of Interdigital, Inc. (IDCC) own their pro rata share of each subsidiary company within IDCC.
OD....I agree. The upcoming decision by SCOTUS is huge. It is the "questions that need clarification" part that concerns me. We have been chasing the infringers for decades now and it seems the closer we get to some kind of clarity, the more tenuous our position. More and more, SCOTUS is "voting" along party lines and we know what Obama's position on "patent trolls" is. While we all know that, indeed, not only is IDCC not a patent troll but it has contributed to the industry on a par with the largest IPR contributors, it may not matter if political influence rules. Very disconcerting.
I hope someone can explain to me why this is positive news. The ITC is now interested in revisiting the previous determination that IDCC satisfied the Domestic Industry prong. Doesn't sound good to me.
Here's the problem the short-sellers face:
They can continue to use MM exemptions to short unborrowed shares with the hope that a downturn in the market will allow them to manipulate the SP down and, they can even, with the cooperation of a dirty broker, send phantom shares into the system. However, the product that TSLA has (the Model S) is such a paradigm shift that even these tactics will not stop the inexorable move of the stock to unimaginable heights. Buy and hold and you will win in a big way. IMO.
sab....Just trying to simplify the outrageous inequity that exists with the current rules for those who still live in the 20th century. I.e., belief and trust that the market is a zero-sum game where a (any) stock goes up because there are more buyers and down if more sellers.
jeffree...What a lot of people don't understand is this daily short report has little or nothing to with short interest. Market makers (i.e., GS, JPM, hedge funds and others) are able to (due to the Madoff exemption), initiate short positions without locating and borrowing shares as long as the short position is closed out before settlement date. This, along with the lack of an uptick rule, enable these entities to "move" share prices in a direction that benefits them. And as I have mentioned here before, the entire HFT "industry" is based on this MM exemption and the 2007 removal of the uptick rule.
If IDCC could somehow become part of the solution to Apple and Samsung's battles, the IDCC landscape would change drastically. MO.
Buying opportunity for whom??? Certainly not for those of us who have believed and held for decades. It is a crap shoot. This is pretty much unfolding the way I thought it would. When Obama, several months ago, out of the blue, made a statement about "patent trolls", the handwriting was on the wall. Any ban that IDCC were to achieve through the ITC is subject to being overturned and, given the obvious decisions along party lines, I would not count on the SCOTUS to make the right decision. Anyone, not in the stock, who was willing to "bet" on IDCC prevailing with a small amount of money, might do well. But I advise anyone who already has made a substantial commitment, don't throw good money after bad. I sincerely hope I am wrong (and still have a lot of money in IDCC) but be aware, our entire system has been politicized. GLTA.
I agree. Great job by BM. However, don't lose sight of the fact that he wrote it for a reason. As I have said here before, there is a danger that IDCC will get placed in the "troll" pigeon-hole. Seems to me that he is very concerned about this possibility. Don't mortgage the house because you believe that justice will ultimately prevail in this matter. JMO.
OT...This is getting ridiculous. I think I made it pretty obvious that I don't have that opinion of the company in which I have been invested for almost 20 years. Either I have to brush up on my communication skills or others have to brush up on their reading and comprehension skills. Let's put this to bed.
Leon........Sorry if you misunderstood.... I think GBR answered for me accurately. After all this time, I would think that you would know that I don't see IDCC as a troll. Must not have explained myself well.
Loop.....I am not a lawyer, nor am I up on the status of all IDCC's current litigations. However, there is no question in my mind that our "system" of democracy, free enterprise and the law has been compromised. It is all about money and influence. It would not surprise me at all if the SCOTUS sided with Nokia, particularly if the current "tar and feather" initiative toward "trolls" continues to gain more traction before the certiorari appeal has been considered. JMO.
It is not fair. It is not right. IDCC has established Domestic Industry at the ITC multiple times and yet, IMO, it is very possible that they will be thrown under the bus as a "patent troll". Could happen folks. Be prepared.
If naked shorting is actually continuing to happen, then there is an endless supply of "shares", to keep this stock in check. There is no way to know. The only way naked shorts can get hurt is if there is a large dividend distributed or the company is bought out. Otherwise, they continue to milk the system and, everyday, steal a little bit more. Finally though, I believe it is getting very risky for anyone (trader or brokerage) to participate in naked shorting.
I wouldn't get too excited. The most likely buyers are shorts. With the recent, surprising strength of the market, the short hedgies are getting killed. If the market continues up, look for an unusual amount of short squeezes, They are in serious trouble, IMO.
TMP....Good to see others getting the picture. eom.
1dd1...As regards IDCC, Reuters has never (to my knowledge) reported fairly. Over the years, they have actually given what appears to be misinformation, only to correct it the next day after the damage was done to the stock. BTW, while I cannot recall exactly what the connection is, I believe Nokia has some sort of relationship with Thompson Reuters. HMMM.
jeffree...Not alone (as you might have guessed). eom
Nokia's appeal to SCOTUS on Domestic Industry is very scary. Obama has made some negative statements about NPEs. Does anyone think that Obama thought this up all on his own? I think not. I am concerned that he is setting the stage for a ruling against Domestic Industry and IDCC.
I imagine that all of us here have spent the majority of our lives believing that the SCOTUS is absolutely incorruptible. I am not so sure about that. IMO, with the recent confirmation at ITC of IDCC's DI, a decision in favor of Nokia (negating DI) would be very telling. In the meantime, I wouldn't be betting the farm on an IDCC victory.
M3s.....I don't think any of these companies are concerned about the ramifications of a loss. After all, they can continue to delay and ultimately just pay the FRAND rate, as determined by IDCC's current, paying licensees. I.e., they know what the downside is, so why not play the litigation game and hope for the almost-predictable injustice of the system?
Q2 was a blowout quarter. Last reporting period, shorts added another 1.5+M shares! Look for Elon to announce, next week, guidance for units sold during the quarter. This will launch the next leg of the short squeeze. AIMO.
Lime....I understand and agree with everything you say. I am still invested (not as much as I have been) and believe the plan is to garner revenue gains through all the new technologies you mention. My main point was: if one is counting on favorable litigation outcomes to achieve stated revenue goals, I wouldn't mortgage the house. There are many things happening in today's courtrooms. Justice is not necessarily one of those things.
dndodd....It is true that IDCC valued the potential yearly royalty of current litigants at $500M. However, if they are counting on that particular $500M to get to their goal of $800M, then I am, and I believe many here are , wasting time and money waiting for that ship to come in. Hate to say it because I've been a believer for 2 full decades. Everyone on this board has had a taste of what can happen in the courts. IF BM is counting his litigation chickens, we all need to think about how much of our individual investment capital should be allocated to that approach. IMO.
Thanks Fish......This is going to be one of those "points of clarity" that BM has talked about. With IDCC's not-so-stellar history at the ITC, the heavy hitting influence of Nokia and its attempt to retry the Domestic Industry issue, and Obama's chatter about "patent trolls" (I don't think he came up with this himself), I am concerned about this opinion of the ALJ. BLTA.
Leon....Have not been following the board for a while. What is the decision we are waiting for?
TIA
IMO. For Soni to make this move, it is telling us something. Why would anyone go from being CTO at a $2B company to a $10+M Pink Sheet company. There are a lot of potential reasons why this could be happening, some good, some bad (from an IDCC investor point-of view). But, in any case, it is not nothing..JMO.
Loop.....Just curious. Do you feel that all these miscarriages of justice were due to a lack of understanding of the issues? My cynical mind has to attribute some of these to influence. JMO.
Better yet, screen for corruptible judges.
Anyone...Is it possible that the demonstration on June 20 has to do with wireless power charging???
Very doubtful. There have been no shortage of buyers. If you watched the action in the stock, particularly the last 2 hours, efforts were made to contain the stock. As I am sure you know, the buyers of the secondary need to have assurance that the price will fall within a very narrow range, otherwise they would opt out. The stock was priced within one day of the announcement for a reason.
Never mind. I found out that the secondary is being priced tonight and it looks like it's going to be $92.25.
IMO, what will happen will be one of the following: 1) If GS had to short more stock than their over allotment in order to close the stock where they did, they will open the stock lower in order to cover the shorts in excess of the over allotment. When this is accomplished they will then let it go higher, or 2) If they were successful in containing the price without going above the over allotment, then I expect the stock to move up substantially from the bell.
