Sorry Tenchu, I'm not a full subscriber so I can't PM.
Sonw
Tenchu,
I was tempted to respond to DARBES but felt it was a waste of time. Don't expect he/she to know the facts, he/she is just baiting you. It reminds me of how people are using the global LFG channel in WoW to purposely annoy those actually LFG. One more Chuck Norris note and I'm going to go crazy :)
BTW, what server are you on?
Snow
True, if Intel isn't selling lots of Pentium D's and Pentium 4's. On the other hand, if Intel is selling lots of Pentium D's and Pentium 4's then AMD's going to look bad in their Q3 earnings? Why? Because Intel's going to sell a ton of their inventory they've been building up and it's going to prove that AMD left money on the table because they weren't prepared for Intel's Core 2 Launch and corresponding price decreases in the Pentium line up.
Of course, you will believe it's the Osbourne affect because you don't ever give Intel any credit.
Snow
mmoy,
Hey, I just went to Gateway and found a full range of Core 2 Duo processor based systems. I configured a E6600 with 2GB of ram and an ATI X1900X and it came in at about $2k. While I don't like the price, they had the best options and selection available by far.
Snow
If so, dish! If not, why are you even mentioning it?
Why mention it? Because you used this information as a base in your argument.
Kind of like how believing that everything in AMD's 48 page complaint is fabrication, including quotes from multiple Tier 1 OEM executives, helps you sleep?
I guess you thought it strengthened your point.
Snow
including quotes from multiple Tier 1 OEM executives
Quotes can and are often taken out of context to suit the agenda of those quoting their sources. I know you know this.
Snow
mmoy,
The fact that Newegg has boxed processors two weeks after the launch is incredible. In the past, only Dell and HP would've had the new product and customers like Newegg, Falcon NW, Alienware, Voodoo, etc. would be forced to wait. As for pricing, Intel controls what price they set for their customers but they don't control the price their customers charge their customers (confused yet?) jk. In other words, Newegg does have the liberty to sell the product at a higher price to their customers.
Snow
Can I say "I told you so"? I predicted AMD would turn up the PR on their lawsuit during the Core 2 launch. When they can't compete with their products they cry foul play. Yeah, this is really good for the consumer. Tie up the company with the best product in legal battles so the market only gets inferior products. Who's really behaving badly?
Snow
Ruiz and his colleagues believe Intel's monopolistic foul play is what sank AMD's last bid for parity. That was in 2001, when the company had also gained share for five years straight.
LOL, it was the .com bubble burst that sank both AMD and Intel at the time. I remember because Intel came close to reporting a loss for the first time in years. If Intel were the monopoly Hector claims then you would think things would've been much better for Intel at the time.
Just in case you don't remember, take a look at Intel's Q4 earnings in 2001.
http://www.intel.com/pressroom/archive/releases/20020115corp.htm
Pretty sad for what is supposed to be the best quarter of the year.
Snow
You are correct, IIDC is mostly software. When I say tech companies, I'm not limiting that to semiconductors. Lots of software companies in Banglore.
Snow
Sorry to hear that. I was surprised by HP's video card offerings and prices too. I want a 7900GT and can get one in the retail market for $276. I'm willing to pay an extra $100 for the performance. The 7500 just isn't compelling.
Snow
This wouldn't surprise me. Turn over in the high tech sectors in India is terrible (i.e. ~80%). Every tech company is bidding for the labor and the labor rates keep going higher and higher. It makes it very difficult to manage a division with so much turn over.
Snow
Not me, I'm turned on by them and that's why I married one :)
Snow
LOL :)
My observations about Mas:
1. Is not here to learn about Intel as a company or investment
2. Is too biased towards AMD to learn about Intel
3. Is never wrong
4. Must have the last word
5. Does not need to prove anything
6. Does not respect anyone that disagrees with him/her
7. Will moderate anything that doesn't align with his/her view
As a result, mas has been and will remain on my ignore list. Unfortunately, I still see the results of his/her posts.
Snow
Pete,
You should post this on the AMD board so CombJelly has a good example of a straw man.
Snow
Like mmoy said previously, Dell really, really, really needs to improve their execution. I don't know what they were thinking by selling a customer a configuration other than what the customer ordered.
Snow
Congrats on the HP refund! That's says alot for HP.
Snow
IB,
Considering P4s and Celerons are still the bulk of Intel's unit sales and Asia Pacific represents 50% of Intel's sales, I think wmbm's point is valid.
http://download.intel.com/intel/finance/earnings/20060719EarningsFinal.pdf
After all, these processors don't sell themselves. It does require marketing.
Snow
Good luck to AMD. With Merom covering the high end and upper mainstream and Yonah covering the mainstream and low end, Turion X2 is toast and so is AMD's financials.
Snow
Fujitsu-Siemens Nice, have you seen their laptops? I think Fujisu has some of the best laptop designs on the market.
Snow
If you had to replace your desktop today, what would you buy?
Snow
As far as folks in other countries: will they be able to afford printer ink?
LOL, good point. I know I try as much as possible to avoid buying new ink cartridges. Jiggle, jiggle, shake, shake, squeezeeee, come on baby one more print...please!!!
Snow
Generally, people buy machines that fit into their budget, look attractive to them (which has nothing to do with benchmarks and reviews on Anandtech), do the required job, and, most importantly for AMD, are actually on sale where it matters.
You conveniently forgot a major factor, BRAND. Who holds the world's number five ranked brand? Hint, it's not AMD. I'm not sure what OEM you work for, but the biggest OEMs (Dell, HP, and IBM) know and understand the value of a brand and are more than willing to tout Intel inside.
I won't touch your monopolistic conspiracy theories, I get tired of reading that bull shit year after year.
Snow
I still laugh when I see the price of the FX 62. This CPU is an extremely niche market product. Only the AMD fanatics would pay $827 for an FX 62 when they can get a higher performing E6700 for around $500. But then again, fanatics are just that fanatics.
Snow
Agreed. I'm dissappointe with Dell's Core 2 launch. I can't even touch a Dell Core 2 E6600 system for under $1700; meanwhile, I can get an HP Core 2 E6600 system for around $1400 to $1500. Who do you think I'm considering? Not Dell.
Snow
WMBM,
This is the part of the article that has me wondering about AMD's capacity.
The raw numbers we hear are above 10 million CPUs, but the time frame keeps changing. Some people say hard targets of three to four million CPUs a quarter, other give mildly different variations. Several sources are pointing at 33-50% of Dell business desktops in the near future.
There is a lot of variation in these figures and I think AMD can meet the low end to mid range demand (3M to 4M), but I doubt they can provide 10M units a quarter to Dell and still keep their other customers full.
Snow
Fastpath and CJ,
I think my point was very clear.
AMD needs to get their 300mm .65nm process up into high volumes fast
I'm sure you wouldn't disagree.
Snow
On another note, Dell has a serious threat too. HP and Apple are poised to take market share from Dell and I don't think having AMD processors will stop their market share slide. In the words of HP CEO after the Dell/AMD announcement "Intel: we look forward to doing more business with you"
As an Intel investor, I've already come to terms that Dell will offer more AMD products, it's a no brainer. Intel knows this too and the company is responding. AMD, on the other hand, is in denial and falling into the same trap Intel did a few years ago. Time for AMD to get paranoid.
Snow
Charlie keeps forgetting that AMD's current pie is only so big. If AMD gives a large slice to Dell then that means other AMD customers get a smaller slice. Dual core and quad core processors don't make the picture look any brighter either; they simply shink AMD's capacity even more. AMD need to get their 300mm .65nm process up into high volumes fast or Dell will be pissed and so will a number of other AMD customers that will be going on allocation.
Snow
And that's all it is, a headline. Go search the IBM website you'll see the headline is far from the truth.
Snow
We'll see.
Snow
Excellent!
Snow
AMD didn't even make the list. I'm not surprised.
Snow
Keith,
IBM using AMD is one thing, businesses buying IBM's AMD based servers is another. Like I said, speculation.
Snow
Matt,
Suggestion from the INTC Board: Buy Woodcrest based Xeon 5100 series servers and your problems will be solved an you will be delighted with their performance ;)
Snow
Truthfully, I don't think either of us are in a position to debate this because we're not the IT professional being asked to keep their business running and purchase the hardware that meets their needs. Admittedly I have an Intel bias and you have an AMD bias. I think that's the only thing we can agree on. The rest is pure speculation filtered through our biases.
Snow
Let em go down with the sinking ship. Ignorance is bliss isn't it?
Snow
ROFL, you're right, it does sound like Klingon! LMAO
Snow
I'm thinking about getting one for the exact same reason. It takes forever for my old 2.4GHz Northwood to boot up and get running after all the antivirus and spyware software complete their tasks. By the way, I've noticed my antivirus and spyware have captured a few files from the novice advertising on this site.
