InterDigital Leadership Centers Sustainability in ITU Video Standards
Source: GlobeNewswire Inc.
InterDigital, Inc. (NASDAQ:IDCC), a mobile and video technology research and development company, today announced that an InterDigital-driven energy consumption effort has been adopted within the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). Following an InterDigital-led proposal, the ITU-R Working Party 6C (WP 6C), responsible for standardization in the areas of video and program production, agreed to integrate the challenge of energy consumption within the working group purview and appointed InterDigital’s Erik Reinhard as co-rapporteur of this important sustainability consideration.
The move by ITU-R WP 6C stems from one of InterDigital’s teams involved in advanced video technology submitting, in October 2020, a “question” on the energy footprint of the technologies they work to standardize. A “question” is the formal process by which a working group within ITU standards begins to examine an issue. InterDigital’s team was successful in getting the “question” adopted by the French delegation at the ITU. The ITU responded by agreeing to look at the issue and last week, ITU-R WP 6C formally extended its efforts to include energy consumption, again naming Mr. Reinhard co-rapporteur alongside Hemini Mehta of the European Broadcasting Union.
“At InterDigital we take pride in our efforts to further our sustainable and ESG commitments through our daily work. Today, we are especially proud of the leadership of InterDigital’s French delegation in ITU for spearheading this important effort and working to integrate sustainability into every aspect of our technological lives,” said InterDigital Imaging Science Lab Director Lionel Oisel. “While video and program production is a specialized area, the technologies developed there often eventually find their way into all consumer electronics and associated services, meaning that our innovations in that area could have a huge impact.”
As a longtime contributor to global standards, InterDigital maintains a strong presence within the ITU. InterDigital’s dedicated ITU contributors exploring advanced video technology represent the first to raise a question about the energy footprint of the technologies they standardize and led the development of a state-of-the-art report encouraging the consideration of energy and sustainability in overall standardization efforts. Findings show that the energy footprint of program production represent at least 12% of the total energy cost of a broadcast system and reiterate the significance of encouraging sustainability within these efforts.

On Wednesday, Judge Leonard P. Stark of the District of Delaware issued a memorandum opinion regarding InterDigital’s motion to dismiss Lenovo and Motorola Mobility’s (collectively, Lenovo) antitrust lawsuit against it for failure to state a claim and lack of jurisdiction.
InterDigital asked the court to “require Lenovo to plead its antitrust counts (as well as a breach of contract count, which is not the subject of the pending motion) as compulsory counterclaims in a patent infringement suit InterDigital is pressing in this Court.” Judge Stark granted in part and denied in part InterDigital’s motion.
Lenovo sued InterDigital in April claiming InterDigital’s patents are preventing Lenovo from satisfying industry-wide cellular standards because InterDigital purportedly refused to license its patents despite the plaintiffs’ offers to pay tens of millions of dollars. These patents are reportedly essential for 3G and 4G wireless standards, under fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory (FRAND) licensing obligations. As a result, the plaintiffs asserted antitrust claims against InterDigital.
The court noted that to plead antitrust standing, “a plaintiff must allege an injury that antitrust law seeks to prevent.” Judge Stark asserted that Lenovo met this requirement. “Lenovo’s allegations that it will be forced out of the cellular market or forced to pay higher-than-FRAND royalties are sufficient to state an injury caused by InterDigital taking action prohibited by the antitrust laws. That is, the injuries Lenovo claims it is suffering could not have occurred unless InterDigital has committed some type of antitrust law violation.” Moreover, the judge said that Lenovo alleged InterDigital “is already injuring it by presently demanding supra-FRAND royalties and depriving Lenovo of access to cellular technology, all because Lenovo will not satisfy InterDigital’s demands.”
The court found, however, that Lenovo failed to “plausibly allege an agreement in furtherance of a common scheme.” In particular, Judge Stark claimed that while Lenovo “tries to allege concerted action between InterDigital and ETSI and/or between InterDigital and other ETSI members, (it) has failed to do so. Lenovo does not point to an agreement between members of ETSI or any scheme resulting from such an agreement.”
The court explained that a purported unilateral breach of FRAND is not sufficient to allege actionable claims under Section 1 of the Sherman Act. Consequently, the court concluded that Lenovo has not adequately alleged a Sherman Act Section 1 claim and granted InterDigital’s motion to dismiss this claim.
However, the court found that Lenovo adequately alleged a Sherman Act Section 2 claim. Specifically, Judge Starks found that Lenovo’s claim follows those in Broadcom and adequately stated a Section 2 claim because the patent holder’s “intentionally false promise” to license the technology, along with Lenovo’s “reliance on that promise when including the technology in a standard” and a breach of that promise by InterDigital constitutes anti-competitive conduct.
The court found that Lenovo alleged what Broadcomrequires, specifically “that InterDigital lied to ETSI about its commitment to FRAND licensing in order to obtain the benefit of SEP status for its patent portfolio, thereby unlawfully obtaining market power which InterDigital now seeks to exploit for its own gain.” Thus, the court proclaimed that these allegations are sufficient for a Section 2 claim and therefore denied InterDigital’s motion to dismiss these claims.
The court also stated that this action is a compulsory counterclaim “to InterDigital’s first-filed patent infringement action against Lenovo, which is … also pending in this District.” The court stated that Lenovo’s breach of contract claim in this instant action and InterDigital’s declaratory judgment that it did not breach the same contract in the patent action are “logically related,” although the scope is different.
The court added that Lenovo’s Section 2 claim is a compulsory counterclaim “because it arises out of the same facts and occurrences as the patent infringement claims filed by InterDigital in the earlier action.” Moreover, the opinion noted, “findings in the patent infringement action as to whether Lenovo infringes InterDigital’s asserted patents could impact issues raised in Lenovo’s action here.” The court stated that since both actions “are logically related() and have evidentiary overlap…Lenovo’s claims must be pled as compulsory counterclaims in InterDigital’s patent infringement action.” As a result, the court added that it will order the two cases to be consolidated.

InterDigital and EPIC Successfully Demonstrate 100Gbps+ Encoder/Decoder IP Technology
Source: GlobeNewswire Inc.?
InterDigital, Inc. (NASDAQ:IDCC), a mobile and video technology research and development company, has today announced the successful completion of the Horizon 2020 Enabling Practical Wireless Tb/s Communications with Next Generation Channel Coding (EPIC) project. A consortium of eight partners, including research and development companies, telecoms vendors and academia, EPIC has developed implementation-ready Forward Error Correction (FEC) technology in all three major code families—Turbo, LDPC and Polar—to meet the future cost and performance requirements of wireless terabytes per second (Tbps) technologies for 6G.
To support 6G’s higher data rates, a shift from GHz bands (mmWave bands) to Terahertz (THz) bands, including 100GHz spectrum and above, is required. As part of the EPIC project, InterDigital and the consortium partners successfully demonstrated high-throughput 100Gbps wireless baseband encoder and decoder technology, showcasing the substantial progress being made to deliver THz communications.
The EPIC project focused on the development of FEC algorithms, which detect and correct errors in transmitted data to improve throughput rates when encoding and decoding data. While FEC algorithms are critical to the future commercialization of THz and wireless Tbps technologies, FEC is also one of the most complex and computationally intense blocks in the digital baseband chain.
“We’re very pleased with the progress that the EPIC consortium made in the development of critical encoder and decoder technology which is helping to solve the FEC throughput challenge of 6G,” said Dr. Erdal Arikan, inventor of Polar codes and founder of Polaran Inc. “The successful project outcomes and demo with InterDigital and our EPIC peers is proof of our successful research and development efforts to enable the future of wireless technologies, beyond the current limitations we are facing with 5G.”
“The 5G we see today is only just scratching the surface in terms of delivering low latency and ultra-reliable communications. 5G was never going to happen all at once; in order to achieve true, ultra-high throughput capabilities for 6G, THz and wireless Tbps communications are key,” said Dr. Onur Sahin, Member of Technical Staff at InterDigital Europe. “FEC technology will be critical to the future commercialization of THz and wireless Tbps technologies, and our latest work on the EPIC project is playing an instrumental role in realizing the future of wireless technology. The outcome of this project is an important contribution to commercially practical THz and Tbps technologies and will add significant momentum to the development of this field.”
Technical Overview
The EPIC project developed three vital components—encoder/decoder algorithms, technology IP blocks, and virtual chipset products. Using a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) testbed from Polaran, the EPIC 100Gbps wireless demo exhibited practical ultra-high throughput FEC solutions for encoder and decoder technology. The demo showcased the feasibility of wireless Tbps data rate in a real-time demonstration reaching 206 Gbps, and the corresponding ASIC solutions topping 1000Gbps.
EPIC developed FEC algorithms in all three major code families—Turbo, LDPC and Polar codes. These code families have all been prominent technologies in 3G, 4G and 5G, and will continue to be critical to the development of 6G. As part of its role within EPIC, InterDigital participated in the development of Polar code advancements. InterDigital developed new Polar code designs, helping to deliver the ultra-high throughput Tbps data rates.
Alongside the 100Gbps demo, the EPIC project also delivered world leading novel channel coding solutions and ASIC virtual silicon architectures. These architectures are required in 6G devices and end-user terminals, and the FPGA testbed was a verification that the ASIC virtual silicon architectures work.
The project, which ran from September 2017 to November 2020, aimed to develop the backbone for future communication systems and highlight the future commercial viability of 6G systems. Potential applications vary from ultra-small form factors that enable wireless chip-to-chip communications to ultra-high throughputs enabling better VR technology capabilities that deliver a true virtual presence.
Background
Over the past 40 years, InterDigital has been at the forefront of research and development in wireless and video technologies. The company has played a leading role in the development of 2G, 3G, 4G, 5G and now 6G, and has made 4,000 contributions to major wireless standards. InterDigital is a major player in many 5G projects and testbeds, participating in projects such as 5G-FLAME. 5G-FUDGE, 5G-CORAL, 5G-DIVE, 5Growth, 5G Smart Tourism, and many more. InterDigital’s work with EPIC and contribution to the 100Gbps demo is another example of the important role it is playing in the development of future technologies.
The EPIC consortium is comprised of eight partners from seven countries, including InterDigital Europe, Interuniversitair Micro-Electronica Centrum (IMEC), Polaran, Technische Universität Kaiserslautern, Ericsson, Institut Mines-Télécom, Creonic, and Technikon.
EPIC is just one of six projects linked to the development of THz communications funded by the European Commission and that ran from 2017 to 2020. Dr. Onur Sahin from InterDigital discussed EPIC’s role in the development of 6G-era channel coding at the Third Towards THz Comms Workshop (3TTCW), which took place on Friday, March 12th, 2021.
On Wednesday, April 28th, EPIC project leaders will detail the FEC algorithms developed and the groundbreaking impact it will have on future 6G devices, architectures, and roadmaps in a webinar hosted by 6GWorld. Additional webinar details and registration information will be available here.

CompareAI is the first iOS app to enable experimentation with a library of state-of-the-art Deep Learning-based image compression algorithms on real world, resource-limited devices
WILMINGTON, Del., Feb. 23, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- InterDigital, Inc. (NASDAQ: IDCC), a mobile and video technology research and development company, today announced it has translated its deep learning-based image compression research into the first AI-based image compression app—CompareAI. Running offline and on resource-constrained consumer hardware, CompareAI allows researchers and developers to experiment with and compare a wide range of compute-intensive image compression techniques in “real world” scenarios.
CompareAI features 15 deep learning-based compression models and includes a deep learning-based image encoder, a decoder, and an entropy coder to generate bitstreams comparable to traditional image compression algorithms, which had previously required dedicated Graphics Processing Units (GPUs).
The variety of compressions means developers can access a diverse range of deep architectures, quality metrics, and quality levels, and for the first time allows them to compare compressions on a commercially available device. Developers can either select pictures using their own device, or choose from curated images, and CompareAI’s slider-based mechanism lets them compare the quality of the images compressed using traditional techniques like JPEG and HEIC, with those that use new AI-based techniques. The app also offers a step-by-step interface, which helps developers better understand the compression process.
“The CompareAI app is a first on many fronts,” said Jean Bolot, Head of the AI Lab at InterDigital. “It propels image compression techniques forward by enabling deep-learning algorithms on resource-limited devices and can compare the quality obtained with traditional techniques. CompareAI improves the quality of image compression today, but also provides the groundwork for next generation techniques which will enable more high-quality images to be stored using much less space.”
The CompareAI app was developed from CompressAI, InterDigital’s open-source research software for deep learning-based image compression research.

BIO-Key Delivers Powerful New Capabilities for PortalGuard IDaaS
Source: GlobeNewswire Inc.?
BIO-key International, Inc. (NASDAQ: BKYI), an innovative provider of identity and access management (IAM) solutions powered by biometrics, today announced new capabilities for its PortalGuard IDaaS cloud-delivered authentication solution. These new features include enhanced adaptive authentication, Single Sign-On (SSO) support for secure remote work access, and authentication analytics to give administrators visibility into user access activities. All the new capabilities will be available for PortalGuard users by mid-February 2021.
Microsoft research on social engineering attacks, where cybercriminals rely on a person clicking a link or opening an attachment, reveals these attacks have escalated from 20,000 to 30,000 per day in the U.S. alone. These attacks have become even more complicated as employees continue to work from anywhere. To mitigate common threats while providing more convenient methods of authentication such as passwordless, biometric, and adaptive technologies, BIO-Key is introducing new innovations for PortalGuard IDaaS to better serve customers who are keen to have more options for securing their hybrid environments of cloud-based and on-premises applications, as well as multiple directory support, including Microsoft Azure.
To continue securing access to applications for customers in a way that is flexible, scalable, and affordable, BIO-Key is releasing six new capabilities for PortalGuard and its world-class biometric solution, WEB-Key:
Adaptive Authentication for Improved, Continuous Authentication
PortalGuard already leads the industry by supporting over fifteen authentication factors and contextual authentication. Now, with the introduction of PortalGuard Contextual Authentication v2.0, the customer user experience is improved through more fine-tuned risk-balancing controls, which analyze contextual or adaptive characteristics to strike the perfect balance between security and convenience. Customers gain the ability to automatically evaluate each login request, identify trends, and flag unexpected requests that require special handling based on IP addresses, geolocation, and prior browser usage as part of a comprehensive adaptive authentication process.
SSO Jump Page for Easy Application Organization
Some enterprises don’t have a full Cloud Management System portal in their environment, creating a need for a page that shows an accurate listing of all applications in which each user has SSO access. Updates to the SSO Jump Page will allow users to easily search through their applications by title or help text for quick discovery. The updated SSO Jump Page is available for PortalGuard customers at no additional cost with a simple set-up for both administrators and users.
Microsoft Azure Active Directory (AD) Integration to Support Working from Anywhere
With remote work continuing to be a mainstay amongst employees, users can often no longer connect to a Domain Controller to enforce centrally-controlled security policies. PortalGuard now provides added support for Microsoft’s Azure AD, which has been described as a secure, cloud-based directory for narrowing the functionality gap with on-premise AD deployments. The direct support for Azure AD allows BIO-Key to offer PortalGuard customers a full, enterprise-level, “cloud-only” experience, which also supports customers looking to move away from managing and hosting their own data centers. Azure AD will be supported as a “first-class” directory for real-time authentication in PortalGuard, and its Hybrid Domain joining functionality will also be supported for organizations that have federated Office365/Azure AD within PortalGuard.
Passwordless Fast Identity Online (FIDO) Authentication as an Alternative to Password-Based Logins
PortalGuard already supports FIDO2 tokens, positioned by Microsoft and other industry leaders as a key to the elimination of password-based authentication. With this expansion, it now also includes the FIDO2 specification that supports a "passwordless" mode. The added passwordless FIDO2 specification provides another option that combines with customers’ preferred PortalGuard passwordless option, BIO-Key’s industry-leading biometric authentication.
Dashboard and Analytics for Full Visibility into User Interactions
This innovation builds on PortalGuard’s user activity data collection capabilities to run reports on user interactions at a chosen interval, in which the results are automatically received via email as a Scheduled Report. Administrators also have the ability to manually export report data from the PortalGuard Administrator Dashboard. They can access new reports such as user activity tracking to gain actionable insights for troubleshooting and diagnostic purposes.
WEB-Key 4.0.931 Release for Improved Product Experience
The new WEB-Key release provides faster installation and quicker device lookup for fingerprint scanners of choice, delivering an even more streamlined experience for users leveraging BIO-key’s server-based biometric identity and authentication.
“Customers choose PortalGuard to secure their access points so they can focus on other pressing issues, which is why we’re constantly looking for ways to add value for enterprises that are facing a myriad of cybersecurity threats,” said Michael DePasquale, Chairman & CEO of BIO-key International. “The launch of our new PortalGuard and WEB-Key capabilities provides improved authentication and support for working from any location, which are critical issues for today’s institutions, especially in targeted segments such as education, government, financial, and healthcare.”
PortalGuard is a solution that leverages biometric security to blunt the growing threat of cyberattacks such as ransomware and phishing. It helps enterprises become secure “cloud-first” businesses while maintaining the highest security levels through unmatched integration flexibility and support for a wide variety of authentication factors.

Nova casts light on streaming network issues as energy demands soar
So-called industry-first solution brings new revenue opportunities, reduces churn and differentiates offer for video providers as they struggle to cope with energy surge in providing services
Joe O’Halloran, Computer Weekly
Published: 03 Dec 2020 19:39
With video accounting for two-thirds of current fixed network traffic and set to rise to over 90% in 5G networks by 2024, video streaming issues have become the top source of network-related customer churn. Tech companies EXFO and InterDigital are proposing solutions for what could be a multimillion-dollar problem for operators.
Test, monitoring and analytics expert EXFO has announced what it calls an industry-first solution allowing service providers to automatically detect and diagnose the root cause of video streaming problems as soon as they begin, and identify their origin, whether inside or outside their networks and whether this is entertainment or, increasingly, video-conferencing services such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams.
InterDigital, in a study with Futuresource, has identified what it calls a “staggering” disparity between the energy demands of emerging consumer devices and immersive video experiences and has spotlighted the need for more environmentally sustainable choices across the video entertainment industry.
EXFO’s Nova Active over-the-top (OTT) video monitoringtechnology aims to address a headache for providers whose consumers blame their video quality of experience (QoE) issues primarily on their offers, even though about half of all video quality issues originate outside their networks and their control.
As a result, service providers are reporting high volumes of churn and are unable to effectively monetise OTT video services and take advantage of QoE as an essential differentiator. In turn, revenue losses and higher customer acquisition costs increase as the provider’s reputation suffers – even if the issues stem from a customer device, a poor home Wi-Fi network or a content provider’s datacentre issue.
The Nova Active OTT video monitoring system is designed to enable mobile network operators, internet service providers and content delivery providers to detect, segment, classify and diagnose the root cause of video-streaming problems as soon as they begin. For the first time, claims EXFO, service providers will be able to pinpoint whether problems such as freezing, buffering or lagging come from their network, the video platform, the user’s device, or a video provider such as YouTube or Netflix.
Given that legacy video-monitoring systems are generally expensive, compute-intensive and tailored to content delivery applications, EXFO said the industry needs real-time video monitoring that helps service providers overcome network issues, where most issues originate
“As we all increasingly rely on video streaming for working, learning and socialising, the quality of over-the-top video services has never been more important,” said Abdelkrim Benamar, EXFO’s vice-president of service assurance, systems and services. “But until now, service providers did not have access to technology allowing them to quickly identify and solve video-streaming problems, whether on mobile devices, at work or at home.
“EXFO’s unique solution will give service providers the ability to quickly pinpoint the source of these problems, resolve video quality issues for users and capture the growing opportunity that video represents.”
Nova Active OTT video monitoring is an integral part of the Nova Active monitoring system and the Nova Adaptive Service Assurance platform. Using a patent-pending approach that measures video-streaming experience without compromising user privacy, EXFO says operators can precisely identify, classify and localise issues as they occur. The technology avoids big data analytics and decryption delays, allowing operations teams to prioritise and take immediate action.
But it’s not just network congestion issues that are tasking those in charge of content providers’ datacentres issues. In their report The sustainable future of video entertainment, InterDigital and Futuresource analysed the energy demands of the video entertainment industry, from the production, delivery and consumption of video experiences, noting emerging technology to mitigate the environmental impact across the video value chain.
Their findings suggest that sustainability must be integrated into all aspects of the ecosystem, from manufacturing to supply chain and logistics, to be most effective.
The research noted that streaming video datacentres consumed 2,460 gigawatt hours of energy in 2019. Such facilities are integral to housing content for the video entertainment industry, but also leave a high carbon footprint.
They were found to be responsible for about 3% of global electricity use and the study said the massive impact of datacentres on global energy reserves highlights the need for a green transformation of the ICT sector. By 2022, video viewing is likely to account for 82% of all internet traffic, with overall internet traffic accounting for more than 1% of global emissions.
“This has been the year of video, as the world’s circumstances have aligned with a ubiquity of consumer devices and more time spent looking at our screens,” said InterDigital CTO Henry Tirri. “As our dependence on these devices and experiences grows, so too will our impact on the environment become more consequential.
“The data in this report highlights the importance of continued technical progress in streaming, networking, compression and device technology, but also the need for individuals to make responsible choices.”
