Hedge fund bets millions that gas price will triple

A hedge fund has made a large bet that natural gas prices will triple by winter just as the price of the commodity slides to a seven-year low.
Traders took notice last week when the fund, as yet undisclosed, spent millions for the right to buy US natural gas at $10 (£6.03) per million British thermal units in January and February, up from Wednesday’s spot level just above $3 per mBtu.
EDITOR’S CHOICE
Lex: Naturally gassed - Aug-19FT blog: Energy source - Jun-01“This is the first bullish play I’ve seen in quite a while,” said Raymond Carbone, president of Paramount Options on the New York Mercantile Exchange floor. “It caught the eyes of people in the [options] ring.”
The bet echoes purchases of call options – contracts that give the holder the right to buy at a fixed price and date – in late 2007 to cash in if oil moved to $150 a barrel by mid-2008.
The options were referred to as “lottery tickets” at the time because of their low cost and high potential reward, but the move paid off when oil surged.
US gas futures on Wednesday fell to $3.049 per mBtu, the lowest in seven years, as the market remains over-supplied. However, some say there is potential for a recovery once drilling rig shutdowns due to weak demand over the past year start to bite.
Ben Dell, an analyst at Bernstein Research, said that with US natural gas output falling 30 per cent this year, the steepest rate ever, a glut will turn into a deficit and prices will rise. But forecasters do not expect the market to hit $10 per mBtu soon.
Yet the hedge fund sees a chance of a spike. For months, an average 2,000 gas call options have traded each day for the New York gas benchmark contract. Last week, however, volume spiked one day as 10,000 January $10 calls were bought. Over the next two days, nearly 8,000 February $10 calls traded.
The slim chance of reaching double-digit territory was reflected in the price of the call options. January calls sold last week for about 5.6 cents, meaning that buying 10,000 contracts cost $5.6m.
Chris Thorpe, at Hudson Capital Energy, a New York options dealer, said the fund could be a winner even if the spot price did not reach $10. “If a 5-cent option goes to 10 cents, they’re happy,” Mr Thorpe said.
Joe" lets say that UNG in feb 2010 is at $16.00 can you sell your 2011 calls earlier or do you have to wait until 2011? Also what would be the approx price / increase of tour $3 calls if UNG is at $16...thanks !
found on another board ..."I was in NY the past few days on vacation and happened to talk to a trader at a hedge fund. They're still net long but have been ordered to become neutral by the end of august.
He also told me some interesting stuff like when C fell to 99 cents, they were ordered to acquire any and all available C shares for 1.02, and that they acquired a lot of Wachovia shares initially following the deal with C but before WFC stepped in. However they are staying away from CIT like the plague though they do believe that the government won't let them fail."
HNU on TSX is pretty good pickin also
Earnings are brutal
Do you guys think that if the market pulls back CEMJQ may pull back also? Looking to get in ,
did you get that buy?
Ronnie can you advise if you think this company LDSR is a more solid company then so many of these "fly by night" penny stocks that come crashng down in 2-3 days. I'm intereted in your opinion and also are you long on LDSR?
yes of course the market will go up....shaking my head the last 3 weeks
Good time to short RDN and AIG
Corrupt markets...... "continuing claims came in at 6.31 million, which is above the 6.25 million continuing claims that were widely expected and up from the previous week. The previous week's continuing claims total was revised higher to 6.24 million from a near 6.20 million" GS pulls the strings...Whitehouse does the dance.....I think that I should just follow the trend....I personaly beleive that no way in hell the markets should be climbing, but the average investor is following everyone else...maybe time to get in line....
how about if the stock goes down to $2.50 what are we left with then? Thanks for the input !
Are these the ones you bought at $17?
"but have not been able to participate in the gains as they are limited by my call sold"
can you please explain...
I'm living your 2003 year...I cannot beleive this market...there is no way that it should be continuing to climb ...and yes I should follow the trend instead of being rational..very seriously considering selling my EDZ and FXP for a huge loss...can't take it anymore
Nice 1 day return, also good buy on CNO
is this similar to what you do...The strategy is the buy/write option strategy, and requires the stock to be purchased and a covered call option to be sold immediately against it. The premium received will lower your cost basis (providing downside protection), and the strike price the option is written for is out of the money so it allows additional upside gains on the stock.
thanks Joe...showwing my limited investment knowledge...only understood about 1/2 of what you typed...can you expain more simpler terms..especially the " I do mostly covered calls and leaps" thanks...
yuo have my vote...I'm getting fuckin killed here ...have lost most of my money...culd do no wrong in 4 months of 2008 (made $220k) nowe lost double that...I said that I'll just do whayt Joe does about 6 weeks ago...now I'm almost dried up with 2 small children to support...I currently own "still" EDZ and FZP and of all the times I did not place a stop loss
what does this exactly mean? up or down in the near future?
Thanks
based upon?
Do you have an opinion on a time fctor when LEH may exit BK?

CIT bond advisers to push for bankruptcy: report
NEW YORK (Reuters) - The advisers to the bondholders that provided lender CIT Group Inc with a $3 billion loan facility this week are recommending it be restructured through a bankruptcy following a debt tender in August, Bloomberg reported on Wednesday, citing a person familiar with the matter.
CIT has started a cash tender offer for its outstanding floating rate senior notes due August 17, exchanging $825 for each $1000 principal amount.
But even if CIT manages to get 90 percent of those notes swapped at a discount, advisers will push for a pre-packaged bankruptcy and have CIT restructure out of court, Jeffrey Werbalowsky, the co-CEO of Houlihan Lokey Howard & Zukin, the investment bank advising the bondholders, told them on Wednesday, according to the person cited by Bloomberg.
Earlier this week, bondholders provided CIT with the emergency loan, allowing the 101-year-old lender to small and mid-sized businesses to stave off the threat of imminent bankruptcy.
