Hi Eddie, We are growing several kinds of hardneck garlic, naturally grown :)
Russian Red
Yugoslavian
Tibetan
Music
We have increased our seed over the last several years and are now at the point where we planted just over 50K in October.
We are enjoying our winter rest now! Next year will be very busy for us!
Hope you are well and Merry Christmas to all on the board here...
I would try the tea, but chocolate and garlic? I don't know about that one!
Every year I think about making a deer garden to attract them, but I think we have enough coming through without having to go to the trouble.
LOL :) well, we are higher on the food chain right?
oh yes we sure did, it just looked different!
The solution you found looks a lot nicer than the one I used :)
That being said, over the months part of the rope sagged and I wasn't paying attention. One deer got in and ate my broccoli. What could we do? We ate the deer :) win win

Edited many times because I can't remember how to post a picture here!
:) very true, good stuff
Exactly! What you said about the need to be taught in school about processed foods and all the chemicals. Imagine if people understood what they are putting in their bodies.
I'm already working on my seed list for the garden. I have quite a bit of seed I collected but am still going to have to order some.
haha, just kidding...
I made it to the 2 minute mark and couldn't bear to finish it! I realize now I have been mispronouncing your state's name :)
I see you got that snow we were just talking about Eddie :)
Stay warm and start shovelling...I just finished the pathway to the greenhouse so I could get the snow off the roof. Now I'm tired and ready to sit for a bit.
Hi everyone, blessings to you all for 2016!
I was invited, as an author, to take part in a Back to Basics Bundle that has more than 60 ebooks, memberships & courses included. The sale for it started today and only runs for 1 week.
Take advantage of it - the total value is more than $550 and it is on sale for less than $30. You can download or, for an additional cost, get it on a flash drive.
Here's the link if you want to read more about it. I am DEFINITELY promoting it as it is such a fantastic deal. A lot of great authors who are all living the lifestyle already.

That's always the downside isn't it, Eddie with too little snowfall. Some people like that, but may end up paying come Spring and Summer when there isn't enough water. I remember your 2011 winter, that was awful for all of you in the East.
(I can tell it has been awhile since I posted here - I keep sending private messages when I mean to hit Public..sorry!)
btw, Eddie, I got a blank PM from you yesterday. I couldn't open it
Thanks for that link, I will look into it.
Funny thing, yesterday afternoon I got started with that snow. Using a broom I tried sweeping it off the lower part of the roof. A couple minutes later, I heard a crack and the whole thing slid off! Both sides....I barely got out of the way in time.
It's dangerous here to stand around the eaves of a house on a sunny winter day. The huge ice curl fell off the one side of the house yesterday too. May have had something to do with me poking holes in it with the handle end of the broom :)
That's a LOT of weight hanging on the lower roof and although I love a good ice curl, eventually they make me nervous and I try to get them down :)
We try to never leave snow right around our greenhouse. If the snow gets too high, then more is added to it from what falls off the roof, I think it's too much pressure for the wood frame greenhouse. I don't want to see it buckle or cave in - I still need it!
I've lost one of those Costco canopies too... and a buddy's new quad was under it at the time. I did a lot of shovelling that day, hoping it wasn't wrecked. It wasn't.
Glad you got to see the pics
That stuff works! We use manure tea here, especially for the tomatoes and peppers.
That forum is awesome for all the information they have there. (sorry meant as public message, not private :)
Would be nice to find out what the highup's at the USDA feed their own families! Think it's pesticide laden food, I don't think so
I also use boiling water. Pour it right on the weeds, it helps keep my little cement walkway clear of weeds between the pavers.
Does he think that giving the chickens more room will mean they won't huddle at night? Or am I missing something?
Where I live, it often gets down to -40C (same temp as -40F) That is bloody cold. Our hens have one heat lamp in the coop. And they huddle, something they do instinctively. We also have a heating element under their waterer so that it doesn't freeze.
On those really cold mornings, we like eating porridge. I always make extra and bring it to the girls. That plus some warm water is always appreciated by them :)
The whole thing is a confusing mess and of course, "they" like it that way.
Best thing to do I would think is grow your own food, so you know whether your seed is GMO and whether your crops have been sprayed.
The whole food movement is made up of people for and against and sometimes it is hard to know which side someone is actually on.
A beautiful story for his wife....
Merry Christmas to everyone here on the board! I hope you all have a wonderful holiday with your loved ones!
I was really hoping Spencer would win and was disappointed when he was voted out. He had to fight obstacles the whole way through the game, right from the start.
But between Woo and Tony, I think Tony played the game far better.
I will Google it, thanks Chris!
I agree with Chris about the nitrogen. Garlic also likes well drained soil.
Hey Eddie, I've grown garlic in the same bed for many years. I try to amend the soil every year with well composted manure.
When were the pictures taken? And when were they planted?
I think you mentioned them in an earlier post - I am going to google them to see what they are up to.
My husband and I are all about self sufficiency as much as possible. Amazing how crazy cheap life can be if we cut out all the extras.
I had never seen it either, until we moved to the Cariboo. I "think" (not sure) that it has something to do with the steepness of the roofs.
Our roof is crazy steep. I don't know that you'd see snow curls on a less steep roof.
Where we live, we always have an extreme of temperatures. We can sit on the deck in January. As long as the sun is out, we don't even need a jacket. But as soon as that sun disappears, damn it gets cold immediately.
Today it is -30 Celsius at our place, that's cold.
This is also why we can't grow peppers and tomatoes outside - they need to be in a greenhouse. In summer, it is common for the temperatures to swing 25 degrees C from mid day to night.
Over time, we have learned how to garden in this kind of climate. It helps that in winter, we sometimes get down to southern California, where we can enjoy the warmth!
There is something about a red barn that just feels so right. I love them!
Maybe I'm being cynical, but I don't believe farmers would get any of that premium.
Farmers always get the shaft, unless they sell where they can set the price eg. farmer's markets, CSA
We do have acreage and we grow most of our own food, including a lot of meat. We don't use any chemicals, everything is naturally grown.
A person couldn't pay me enough for me to do anything Monsanto's way. I can't abide Monsanto, and been spouting off about them for years, lol!
If you like, you can see what we do over here:

Of course, it's the beginning of February and there's about 3 feet of snow, so the only thing growing around here right now are the snow curls :)
It's wonderful how you have improved your soil so much over these last few years.
Our friends have fewer horses now :( It used to be very easy to get a trailer load of horse biscuits for the compost piles. We can still get it, just not in the quantity we want. There are quite a few people here with horses, I just need to ask around.
That looks so awesome Eddie!!
I hope most people realize that prices do NOT have to rise, just because of labelling changes. Even if they used better and more natural ingredients, I still can't see why the prices need to go up.
But they will...because the companies are out to get every extra dollar out of folks that they can.
I moderate a Self Sufficiency group board on Pinterest and it is amazing how many people are becoming interested in Survival & Prepping!
There are quite a few boards over there that are dedicated to these areas.
We are seeing that too in BC. Organic sections of the store are becoming much larger, and both grocery stores in our area have gluten free sections.
I think some companies are beginning to realize there is a market for this!
The gov't would, in most cases, love to see things like this put through. Gotta keep the sheeple in order!
Your Dad enlightened many of us with his posts and he will be missed by many of us here on Ihub.
My thoughts are with your family now. I am sorry to hear of his passing.
Oh I am sad to hear this. He was such a kind man and a great contributor to this board and its philosophy.
