THE NSOMNIYAK CHALLENGE;
ALIF LAWE ROIAK All are sub 1 dollar and great last quarter earnings and have pulled back from inintial spike.
DGSE My favorite stock. Confusion in ticker and rising gold prices provide unusual opportunity.
SGZH Obligatory china low PE pick.
RWC Again huge pull back from initial spike of good quarterly earnings.
My slap to the face of nsomniyak ... !!!
What ? Oh, it's not that kind of challenge;
my mistake. Well then, as Arianna H would
say: "The Dorch is passed ... !!!"
DAAT.ob should ride the crest of the anti
government wave for another 3 years, as Red
Necks arm and re-arm and re-arm ...
themselves ... . Should we experience Civil War
or Revolution, so much the better ... ))<:}
EGMI.ob has gone international with its
game card business; and, being based in
NYC, is a big advantage. This is an extremely
small company in terms of employees, so
there is little overhead.
GRVY: Yes, I laughed when Bobw called it
the "GRVY Train" but then it disappointed in a
small way and got clobbered. I am hoping that
"Gamers" are too fanatic to notice the GREAT
RECESSION, and we will experience another
ride on the "GRVY Train" ... ((<:}
LAWE.ob has already told us that their business is
booming and they are very bullish concerning the
near future. The only question involves their
administrative abilities to control costs and turn
big profits.
MED has experienced incredible growth in Austin;
over the past 9 months, we have gone from 1
Center to 4 Centers. There are endless success
stories involving local people on the radio. Both the
employees and customers are FANATIC about MED.
OGC.ob a economical miner of Gold in New Zealand
so there is little political risk. Their Income Statement
shows a DRAMATIC turnaround ... .
THE NSOMNIYAK CHALLENGE
AGT, one of the most undervalued gold stocks. I hope they will resolve the loan issue soon and stock gets a pop.
OGC.to, one of the most undervalued gold stocks. Sino gold under the same chairman was taken over. I hope OGC will be the next.

GSL, Global shop leasing company under LONG TERM contracts. Just got its loan re-fied. Dividend rate about 50% at the current stock price. Will need to pay down loan to 80% first before start paying dividends again. Visible cashflow and predictable income year after year.
GRMC.ob, AUY founder/president as well as CFO running this company without salary. Looking for the mother load of gold in its huge 100% land package. Started production to finance the drilling programs.
MY PICKS:
After 8 consecutive PSLs where I picked all six China, I'm going as defensive as the rules will allow. I figure nobody is more defensive than I am, so this is my best chance to win. Typically, I don't go for home runs, so although my overall finishes are usually pretty good, I never realistically contend for the championship. It's either all or none this time.
FAZ: Double beta short on the financials.
SKF: Double beta short on the financials.
I figure there is going to be the beginning of a bank failure avalanche during the next few months and it will spook anything financial. Plus the financial stocks have gone insane. They are due for a massive pull back.
UGL: Double beta Gold. Gold has gone up a lot already, but if there is wide spread concern about the financials, that could cause gold to spike.
IYH: Healthcare. Defensive only. Blend of large stocks.
XLP: Consumer staples - meaning food and drug retailing. Blend of large stocks.
CASH: If not for CASH, my Mr. Sheep rating would be pretty much at the bottom of the Mr. Sheep index. I only have one stock that anyone else picked and even then only one other person.
Len
My picks for PSL13
First, I think that this will be a much more difficult period for stocks to run....and I've selected CASH for one of my choices. I'm waiting for a pullback in one or two stocks that I'm currently following.
The other picks generally follow along the lines that I've laid out earlier: I look for low PEG stocks, with strong sales and eps growth combined with good operating metrics like good cash flows or other important catalysts that investors will find attractive.
CBPO.ob - China Biologic (OTC - 5.64). I've discussed this one many times before, and it was one of my picks in the last PSL contest. You can search for my prior comments on this one, but with an adjusted fd eps of 0.35 in Q2, and on track to earning 1.00+ in fd, ft eps for the FY09 I think its still one of the better buys out there. They continue to hold CCs and attend investor conferences, and added some really high quality VC investors through a recent PP and block sales of stock from another early investor. I'll write up more on this in another post.
CKGT.ob - China Kangtai (OTC - 1.40) This one ran up into the beginning of the contest, and it may pull back intraday in the short run, but its still pretty undervalued on a PEG ratio basis relative to comparable China stocks. Its primarily products for sale don't resonate with a Western audience (cactus products?) but it has decent operating metrics and is just starting to emerge by attending its first ever conference at R&R and hiring a PR firm (admittedly low quality) to help with PRs on earnings and sales efforts. Company earned 0.08 in Q2, and is coming into their seasonally strongest part of the year, which is the 2nd half. New sales initiatives underway include feed additives and cigarettes. May not contribute much to 2009, but 2010 outlook could be very strong.....we'll see. Company could be more transparent in its dealings.
CHBT - China Biotics (NAS - 13.00). One of the stronger stocks based upon balance sheet, ability to generate cash from operations, and the fact that they have just opened up a new facility which should start contributing soon to sales growth. They surprised last quarter with strong sales growth than I expected. Margins are starting to expand along with sales; earned 0.31 in Q1 (FY10), so not as cheap as some others....but I give them high marks for management and being on the Nasdaq. Shelf registration filed does give some pause, but thats the only fly in the ointment I can see. Very solid demand in the probiotics market in China, with limited competition at present.
WKBT.ob - Weikang Biotech (OTC - 1.65). Earned 0.13/share in Q2 (0.28 ytd). One of the cheapest PEG plays out there, with what appear to be solid financials. Good OCF, decent margins, selling in the TCM/Western pharm sector which has seen high growth rates in the past few years. Just did a mildly dilutive PP at 1.75, so you get the opportunity to get in lower than those investors did (ARC China)!
RGCI - Regent Communications (Nas - 0.37). Company in the hot radio sector which has seen a tremendous influx of buying in the past few months. RGCI still looks cheap on an adjusted forward eps basis, and has strong cash flow. The company earned 0.044 after I made adjustments for one times and a full tax rate for Q2. Q2 appears to be a seasonally strong quarter, but Q3 and Q4 could be similar as cost cutting benefits the bottom line. Paying down debt and healthy relationships with their bankers will be key for Regent going forward.
My Picks
BSPM.OB- Earned .16 last quarter, and with new products coming earnings numbers should only get better from here.
So we have a stock selling at a little over 3 times earnings based on last quarter with improving earnings going foward. I think there is a good chance we see a .17-.20 in q3, in my opinion, which the last time it seen, a .16 it pushed it to $4. Well a Push to $4 is a double from here, so seems like a nice risk/reward play. My only concern and it is a major one is it is a china play. But I like BSPM.OB Enough to own it personally and as a PSL 13 Pick. Time will tell if it works out.
DGSE- Earned .07 last quarter and .13 for 6 months ended. Stock is significantly undervalued. Even at a PE of 10 stock trades back to about $3, plus seasonally strong q4 is still to come. My Opinion why DGSE isn't trading over $2 already is the whole quoting confusion of DGC/DGSE. Now when that is worked out, who knows, hopefully the sooner the better. I think DGSE is very undervalued here, and the risk/reward is highly in your favor.
MSN- Earned .04 last quarter in seasonally weak q1. This seems to be a decent turnaround play. Would be cheap on the .04 alone, but we have the two big quarter coming up, and this could send the stock to about $2.50-3.00 if they deliver the .06-.08 like I think they can in q2. My guess is it sends the stock significantly higher. The Kicker here is it is very cheap if you factor in the balance sheet. Trades waaaaaaaaaay below book value, and features almost $1 in cash on the balance sheet.
PRGX- PRGX is yet another turnaround story. PRGX in my opinion is a bargain even here, I would of preferred to have it under $5 for contest purposes, but as my number 1 position in my portfolio I feel it is very undervalued. My reasons why I like it is first they had a very bullish outlook in the past earnings report. They earned .21 last quarter, but they really earned .24 if you eliminate the one time charge. In My Opinion they will report .25-.30 in q3, which may send the stocks to double digits, in fact it was a $12 stock a year ago, it may be able to go back there if they keep executing. Of course you never know with earnings reports, but seems like it offers a good risk/reward ratio at this point.
ROIAK- ROIAK is my only pick that I do not own. This pick would have been NIDB.OB my favorite small bank if it met the minimum volume requirements, but NIDB.OB doesn’t. So I went looking for a stock and ROIAK seemed like the best fit at these prices. Earned .12 last quarter, so very cheap based on earnings. I believe it can come close to repeating next quarter on the earnings front. They also have a big share buyback, which should give the stock good support. The Things I don’t like in this pick is it’s balance Sheet and I wasn’t crazy about the delay of the 2009 annual meeting either. But I believe that ROIAK offers good risk/reward at these levels.
UPG-Earned .12 last quarter fully taxed, and it doesn’t seem to be all that appreciated at $2.31. This stock seems significantly undervalued at these levels. I feel a PE of 10 is warranted for this company, and in my opinion that could send it to the $4.50-5.00 range. UPG also has a solid balance sheet where it trade below book. In My opinion UPG is another good risk/reward candidate at these levels. Just my opinion.
Conclusion: I do like my picks a lot for this contest and I own all of them except ROIAK personally. Hopefully they do very well, but as always time will tell of course. Just my opinion.
kool-aid? You must have been bombed out of your mind on the DKAM Vodka those same guys were pumping 2 years ago at 2 and 3 dollars. LOL.
http://finance.yahoo.com/echarts?s=DKAM.OB#chart1:symbol=dkam.ob;range=5y;indicator=volume;charttype=line;crosshair=on;ohlcvalues=0;logscale=on;source=undefined
Great job should be an interesting contest with a correction of some type possibly happening.
Looks like myself and SWB173 were the only ones that picked TRTN.
I guess I drank alot of kool-aid. But anyway .Lets have some fun. Have a good weekend guys and thanks again.
THE NSOMNIYAK CHALLENGE - my picks
AFOP- Fibor optic company that is still growing and making profits despite the "recession". They expect another growth quarter coming up. Trading at book value, and they have very little debt. Something I think more people will be investing in going forward is companies that manages debt properly.
http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=AFOP
CPLP- Medium sized marine tanker company. SDtock price was hammered early August from around $12 down to $7.50. I think the "correction" was overdone. The stock has a small float, and I think people will be looking for a good dividend play (currently at 20% yield). Also, the shipping sector has been on the bottom of the sectors for a long time (average P/Es around 7), so I'm thinking as the "global economy" picks up, so will the carriers.
http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=CPLP
GPRE- One of the few ethanol stocks that still has money, lol. Most ethanol companies went bankrupt last year with $8 corn. Corn is now down to $3.30ish, and ethanol crush spread are well over $1 again, making them profitable. They also mentioned they are starting their pilot program of producing ethanol (this month) with algae- which should boost some interest in the stock. They also have a grain market that feeds their ethanol plants, so should get even a better deals than others in the sector. Recently because the 4th largest producer in the states.
http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=GPRE
LAWE.OB- They provide all the little things that law enforcement uses, as well as homland security and military. They are experiencing a flux of orders due to the stimlus monies that are coming down the pipe. I'm expecting another bang buster quarter being announced coming up. Biggest selling products: Under vehicle surrvielance systems and graffti cams.
http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=LAWE.OB
PSEC- natural gass prices have really been taken to the cleaners. PSEC is a closed end fund that invests in small companies, with a majority of them in the energy sector. They also have a stake in bio-med and retail sectors. Pays a nice dividend (16%), so expecting that to attract investor going forward. I think it is a fairly save way to be exposed to the oil/nat gas sector
http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=PSEC
SBLK- Another marine bulk shipper with a dividend (5%). Trading at 1/3 book value, so could be a buy out target. Trailing P/E under 2 makes it attractive to those that follow the ratio, imo. Sector is averaging 7, so undervalued based on both book and P/E. Again, I think some money will start flowing into the sector in the coming quarter.
http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=SBLK
It would be interesting to see a most/least sheepiest people over all the past contests, then see the results of those folks. Give Len something to do over this long weekend, lol.
nsomniyak challenge:
$CASH$ I like a cash position to anchor my
"portfolio".
APT: I have been posting about this Canadian company for weeks as a "swine flu" play. Alpha Pro Tech, makes disposable protective apparel and infection control products in the United States and internationally. APT is a "flu play" because they make face masks. Surprising, they have another business line: construction weatherization products consisting of house wrap and synthetic roof underlayment to construction supply and roofing distributors. The weatherization products business is doing well. The company has ZERO debt and 17.48M shares in the float.
DCTH: I picked this stock because it has gained momentum lately. Delcath Systems is a development stage medical company. Here is the gist of their "business": "It focuses on the development of the Delcath PHP System, a Phase III clinical trial product, which isolates the liver from the patient’s general circulatory system and delivers high dose of melphalan hydrochloride or other therapeutic agents directly to the liver." This is a procedure for cases in which there is no alternative therapy. Delcath is conducting a Phase III trial and should do a submission to the FDA next year. 2010 should be a big year for the company. Float: 22M and ZERO LT Debt. DCTH has made a nice move this year.
MED: This is my number one favorite COMPANY. It is a NutriSystem competitor that is starting to come into its own. They are expanding into Texas. The last 10Q was very impressive. "The Owings Mills (MD) company said it pulled in record revenues and net income in the second quarter, which ended June 30. Medifast (NYSE: MED) pulled in $3 million in net income, 20 cents per diluted share, compared with $1.5 million, or 11 cents per diluted share, during the same period last year. It reported revenue of $41 million, a 48 percent increase from the $28 million it generated during the second quarter of 2008." LT Debt: $7.14M Float 12M. After the last 10Q came out, MED made a nice move up. It might not be underpriced, but I am hopeful the next 10Q won't disappoint.
UVE: A retread if ever there was one. This small Florida property insurer pays a nice dividend (currently about 10 percent!), which, in my opinion, puts a floor under the stock price unless there are hurricanes. This year--so far, so good. UVE has expanded into a handful of other States, which somewhat mitigates the risk of big losses from Florida hurricanes. The float is 14.67M shares, but the company has approximately $46 in debt. Cash flow to service the debt has not been a problem. If management are on the up and up, this is probably a pretty solid investment.
VSR: A second retread. Yahoo! "Profile" description: "Versar, Inc. provides various professional services to the government and private sector with solutions for infrastructure, facilities management, construction, environmental quality, defense, and homeland security needs in the United States and internationally." Think military contracts, especially in Iraq and Afghanistan, which may or may not be a good thing. This is the time of year Versar should be receiving new contracts. The stock is about 35 percent off of its 52-week high. Profit margin is pathetic--less than 3%, but trailing PE of 12, ZERO debt, and only 6.8M in float makes this a good pick, imo.
THE ABOVE RELFECTS MY OPINIONS AND IS NOT INVESTMENT ADVICE. If you buy any of my picks and lose money, you should write to your Congressman! LOL. Canadians, etc. should write to a politician of their choosing.!
SSKILLZ1: Terrific. Everything is great. Thank you. One request, same as last time could you make the list of contestants and their picks a "post it note".
SSK - thanks for all your hard work in pulling this together! Appreciate all the statistics.
THE NSOMNIYAK CHALLENGE - my picks
CCGY - Chinese biodiesel company with new plant coming on line that will increase capacity ten-fold.
CDBT - pretty much a shot in the dark as a China micro-cap that might get a run
CHIO - China company in the online insurance niche. There is evidence that the Chines are buying cars in amazing quantities--and insurance is a way to follow that trend. Stock is down 50% from highs and seems to have found a bottom.
NEP - Chinese energy company has pulled back, has a war chest with which to acquire and/or diversify.
WEMU - I think the recent sell-off in this Chinese alternative energy co. is overdone. Numbers look good to me going forward, and I like the fact that the CEO has been buying.
NEPH.OB (wildcard) - Nephros is a small biotech that took a good run recently, and has pulled back hard. Awaiting FDA approval on a couple drugs, with things slated to either be approved, or not, during the PSL13 time frame. Recent pullback from just above 2 to 1.40 offers a good entry point, I think. I am looking for a relatively quick bounce here, then to trade an appreciated position into ????
DIsclaimer--I own NEPH and WEMU, have owned NEP, and may be buying (or buying more of) all of them.
THE NSOMNIYAK CHALLENGE
Once again, I will issue the nsomniyak challenge for PSL13!
Thanks to all who participated in the challenge previous PSL contests. I know that I for one came away with a whole lot of good ideas, and I will be raising some cash to act on those I expect to come out of this contest's challenge!
The PSL contests are fun--but they can also be profitable. I am absolutely sure I made some money trading some stocks that I would not have purchased if not for the previous nsomniyak challenge go-rounds.
This is your chance to play alchemist--you too can turn alphabet soup into the start of some DD!
This is very simple--just make a post on this board, some time within the first couple weeks of the contest, with a little bit of info about each stock you picked. To draw a line in the sand-let's say post your nsom challenge response by midnight, Ihub standard time, 9/20/09 (in other words, if iHub puts a date of 9/20/09 or earlier date on your post, you are in).
A couple sentences for each stock is fine - tell us why you like it and why you like it to perform well over the PSL13 contest time frame. You can post more thorough DD if you wish, but that would be enough.
That should help us all get more out of the PSL13 alphabet soup of symbols.
you have been a very baaaaa-d boy...
Thanks SSKILLZ1. Looks good!!
Well Hope everyone enjoyed all the PSL Stats. Good Luck to everyone in PSL 13. Have a Great weekend.

Commentary: This chart will help everyone set up there portfolios if they so desire. It gives the starting prices of each stock and the # of shares. Note although I go out to as far as need be with the decimals to get accurate #'s, for this post I'm using only 2 decimals on the starting price on all stocks, because 4 decimals looks sloppy. Mr. Sheep's Picks
Just got off, the phone; with Mr. Sheep he is pretty happy with these picks. Plus he likes the Fact that there has been sheep cloning allowed, as their are two sheep allowed in PSL 13. One with $cash$ and one without cash. Hope This Helps.

SSKILLZ alternate explanation
Looking at your info I'm not sure I see a big correlation between contest size and sheepishness. Maybe len can do a quick r-squared for us.
If you are right though here is my explanation
Contest hanger ons probably spend less time on stock picking than the die hards do. As a result they are more likely to be casual followers of popular picks. Bigger contests therefore would attract more people likely to pick the VMC flavor of the month
Also possible
There are not many slam dunk obvious opportunities out there right now that everyone can pile on. As a result there may be more stretching for picks resulting in different people having vastly different ideas about marginally attractive stocks.

Uniqueness Chart
The Higher the uniqueness number the less sheep like we are, as you can see PSL 13 was very unsheep like compared to other contests I think their are several reasons for this. But I'll give you what I feel the main one was.
1) Less contestants obviously boosted the number, odds are your 65th contestant has less of chance to pick a unique stock pick then your 25th, so that probably boosted the average up alot.
However the numbers did improve from PSL 12 probably because their were a few more contestants in psl 13. If the number of contestants improve from here, my belief is that that number will drop even further.

why I picked my picks...
just read the iBox - all the stocks I picked are listed there: http://investorshub.advfn.com/boards/board.aspx?board_id=14567
My Pick6 and why I picked them...
CSGH - China Sun Group High-Tech Co. ($1.15)
One of the best LT stocks trading on any exchange today IMO. Absolutely ENORMOUS growth potential...

WKBT - Weikang Bio-Technology Group Co., Inc. ($1.65)
If you like China stocks, this is definitely one for the watch list.
Took a closer look at the company after Knowledge is King posted their earnings report on the Motherboard last week. One of the most interesting things I found was that the CEO owns 98% of the total shares outstanding! See latest 10k, page 50...
http://sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1365354/000144624709000019/form10k.htm
That leaves only approx $500k shares in the float.
Almost no A/R.
Only $13k in A/P.
Paying taxes.
Q2 over Q1 cash increased from approx $1M to approx $5M.
FY2009 Q1 fd EPS = $0.15.
FY2009 Q2 fd EPS = $0.13.
NOTE: Q2 showed an R&D charge of $1.9M. I believe it is a one time charge for newly developed products with $336k owed. (See 10Q, page 9)...http://sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1365354/000126493109000248/form10-q.htm
W/o that charge, Q2 EPS would have equaled approx $0.18 after tax adj.
Outstanding Equity Awards at Fiscal Year-End...
"There are no unexercised options, unvested stock awards or equity incentive plan awards for any of the above-named executive officers outstanding as of December 31, 2008."
Compensation of Directors...
"We did not pay any compensation to our directors for any services provided as a director during the year ended December 31, 2008. There are no other formal or informal understandings or arrangements relating to compensation."
A private placement w/ ARC China, Inc (which is no fly-by-night company) was recently announced.
Approx 4.77M shares @ $1.75 per share for an aggregate purchase price of $8,345,535.
And approx 2.4M warrants at a price of $2.75 per share.
http://sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1365354/000114420409044137/v158330_8k.htm
Here's the clincher...If you were to add all the shares from the recent PP (including warrants) to WKBT's total share count, they would still have had an EPS of OVER $0.10 (including R&D expense) last quarter giving them a forward PE of 4.2. And that's w/ total dilution including warrants!! And cash from the PP (including warrants) would bring their total cash on hand to almost $20M.
If I'm figuring things right, WKBT looks to be a nice undervalued China stock with MORE growth in the pipeline...
"Our business will continue to accelerate as we enter the second half of 2009."
http://finance.yahoo.com/news/Weikang-BioTechnology-Group-prnews-1512926427.html?x=0&.v=2
BTW, Not sure what type of restrictions are on the PP shares, but I was thinking those shares may help increase liquidity since the CEO doesn't seem to want to let go of his his 98%.
(Wonder if this was one of the reasons for a PP? Use the cash for an acquisition while increasing liquidity? You never know...)
CHME - China Medicine Corp ($1.64)
First half EPS = $0.17 w/o warrant adj. PE based on the first half = approx 4.8 and that does not include the fact that their two strongest quarters lie ahead.
No debt.
No dilution.
Book Value = $2.76
CBPO - China Biologic ($5.64)
One of my picks from PSL 11. abh3vt turned me on to this company a while back. Very hard to ignore their last earnings PR...
http://finance.yahoo.com/news/China-Biologic-Products-prnews-3367707602.html?x=0&.v=49
BSPM - Biostar Pharmaceuticals, Inc. ($2.03)
http://investorshub.advfn.com/boards/read_msg.aspx?message_id=40812820
http://investorshub.advfn.com/boards/read_msg.aspx?message_id=41012622
SGZH - Songzai International Holding Group, Inc ($7.45)
Had this as one of my picks in the last contest. Going to try it again. Started prepping for an uplisting in March. They earned $0.75 per share in Q1 and $0.81 in Q2. Forward PE based on the first 6 months = approx 2.4.
The only downside I see is that their PR machine seems to be broken.
And that's my opinion on my pick6 and why I picked them!
The Famous Pac-10 Sucker Punch ... !!!
As a Black woman and a Feetball fan, I am
upset with the Oregon tail-back; here's the
link-a-roonie:

No. We are a no excuses board. But happy to have you in VMC PSL 13. Now if I can only get a ton of people in the last hour that would be helpful. Have a great holiday weekend.
SSK,
You were right in your assumptions. Did at least my excuses meet the criteria? LOL. Have a good holiday weekend.
Joe
The answer to that is no. On another note it is not a good sign I have this much time to answer these question unless everyone is waiting for last minute, the attendence looks terrible. Not very happy about this, but then again I'm not very happy when I look at the results of my portfolio today either. So I guess me being not happy is a common theme today.
Thanks. How about HEMA, does that one make the cut?
TELT.OB Does qualify.
Yes SSKILLZ1 it helped a lot. Thank you very much.
Read the I-box of VMC PSL 12 for more details (since there aren't going to be any important rules changes). But here is the simple version that you need to know.
1) Pick 6 stocks (Atleast 5 of them have to earnings)
2) All stocks have to be over .25
3) And meet a minimum volume requirement of $5,000 dollar volume a day which most stocks do.
Hope This Helps.
Where are the rules again?
Yes here is where you post your picks.

The winner gets... A year's subscription to IHUB....plus pride in being the #1 performer against a lot of very good stockpickers on the best stockpicking board on the internet. And, they get highlighted on the VMC Champions Board. http://www.investorshub.com/boards/board.asp?board_id=4067
ELIGIBILITY Solely up to the moderators of this board. Any contestant who is booted from IHUB during the contest is ineligible to win any individual PSLcontest.
A FEW POINTS
All picks will be "blind" picks. By that, it means they will have to be based upon the person's best guess rather than by seeing what others have done. When the picks are made, they will be deleted (hidden) from the board. Once the deadline passes, all picks by each person will be shown in the Ibox.
PSL13 will begin on Tuesday, September 8 and end on Friday, December 11th. Everyone must have their picks in before September 4th at 4PM EST. All beginning prices will be as of the the close on Friday, September 4th.
All picks need to be done on this board and not via PM so that we have a record. Also, you can never be sure if whoever you send it to is even around or reading PMs. If you post it on the board, it is permanent and fixed in time.
We will list each person's picks in the Ibox in alphabetical order.
CONTEST RULES
Shown below are all the rules with respect to PSL12. THERE IS ONE NEW RULE MODIFICATION.
New Rule: "Buy a Transaction"
After a contestant uses their four trades they have the right to buy up to three trades at a cost.
The first transaction costs 5% of the unit (or stock position) you are trading out of.
The second transaction costs 10% of (see above).
The third transaction costs 15% of (see above).
1) Pick exactly 6 stocks that you believe will have the greatest appreciation during the period of the contest.
2) Only cash dividends of over 10% will be adjusted for. Stock dividends and splits will always be adjusted for.
3) Each stock must be at least 25 cents as of the deadline for making your picks. If one of your stocks is below 25 cents on the close, you will have until midnight (assuming no news) to pick another stock that qualifies. If not, a cash position will be assigned to your portfolio.
4) Stocks must meet VMC earnings & reporting requirements (see explanation immediately below this list) with the exception that one WILD CARD pick will be allowed (see #16 below).
5) A minimum $5,000 average daily dollar volume for the previous three months is required on any original or any new stock. This is calculated as the Yahoo 3-month average shares traded times the closing price of the stock.
6) Foreign stocks are allowed as long as they are trackable on Yahoo. Some foreign stocks have pinky versions and that is ok.
7) One of your 6 original positions can be a cash position.
8) No options or warrants or mutual funds. ETF's are ok.
9) No limit on market cap.
10) It is not required that you disclose whether you own these stocks.
11) First come, first serve. All GROUPS of 6 must be unique. If a person already has your exact 6 choices you will need to make at least one substitution. This has not happened so far and is very unlikely.
12) You will receive 4 transactions during the contest. You can use 0, 1, 2, 3 or all four. That is up to you.
13) All transactions will be done as of the next closing price. If the transaction is done after the close, it will be as of the close of the following market day. There is a one half hour grace period to allow for UNDOING a trade - assuming there is no news involved to either part of the transaction during that half hour. This is because many closing prices are not available until 20 minutes after the close.
14) A transaction can be a trade or an unfreeze (just like it sounds). A double down (see below) is also a transaction. All transactions should be done on the PSL board - and not via PM.
DOUBLE DOWNS
--- A double down will be allowed where you can trade one of your stocks (or cash) into a "double" position of one of your other stocks (or cash).
--- Once double downed, always doubled downed. In other words, when two stocks are merged into one, they cannot be unmerged. You can trade, freeze or unfreeze the merged unit just as you would a single unit.
--- Once two stocks have been merged via a double down they cannot be double downed into another stock or another stock cannot be double downed into them. A maximum of 2+2 of the 6 units can be merged together. In other words, you can have two double downs at once with two other stocks that are not doubled - ie 4 stocks and 6 units.
--- A maximum of two double downs are allowed per contest.
--- You cannot double down until two weeks have passed - after the close of Thursday, September 17 - which will allow it to be in effect as early as September 21st - two weeks into the contest.
--- Only stocks that meet the earnings rule, the volume rule and the .25 rule can be double downed into.
15) Buy a Transaction: These are additional transactions beyond the four free ones. The first transaction costs 5%. The second transaction costs 10%. The third transaction costs 15%.
16) Any stock - whether frozen or not - can be traded for cash, or another stock. In all cases, the value of the entity that you are trading away must be reinvested in total into the new entity.
17) There will be one Wild Card allowed. One of your picks can deviate from the VMC rule - either in terms of earnings or in terms of being a non-reporting pinky.
18) You are only allowed up to two short positions.
SHORT POSITIONS: A short position must take the form of any ETF. Shown below are four double-beta shorts against the corresponding index...
--- QID: Nasdaq 100
--- SDS: S&P 500
--- MZZ: S&P MidCap 400
--- DXD: Dow Jones Industrial Average
and one single beta short.
--- DOG: Dow Jones Industrial Average
19) A stock does not trade the day AFTER you pick it.
Trade: If one stock trades - whether Stock A (Sell) Or Stock B (Buy) you get a cash position and a transaction is used. If neither stock trades, the transaction is void.
Freeze: If you freeze a stock, whether it trades the following day or not is irrelevant. The freeze takes affect.
Unfreeze: If you unfreeze a stock, the unfreeze is voided and no transaction is used.
20) The 15% rule is designed specifically to discourage picking stocks that have low liquidity. Thus risk is associated with shooting the moon on a potentially bogus trade. However, this rule is NEGATED if the first trade the following day has a dollar volume of at least $50,000 OR if the stock ends above +15% on $100,000 in dollar volume.
---If you make a trade, and the stock you bought opens the next day up 15% or more on no news (and closes above 15%), the trade is voided. The stock you sold turns into cash. 1 Transaction used.
---If you unfreeze a stock and it opens the next day at 15% or more on no news (and closes above 15%), the trade is voided. 1 Transaction used.
---If you sell or freeze a stock and it opens the next day down 15% or more on no news (and closes below 15%), the trade is voided. 1 Transaction used.
-- Own ABC. You sell or freeze. It opens +15%+. Irrelevant
-- Own ABC. You sell or freeze. It opens -15%+. Rule applies
-- Don't own ABC. You buy or unfreeze. It opens +15%+. Rule applies
-- Don't own ABC. You buy or unfreeze. It opens -15%+. Irrelevant
21) If a stock is halted for any reason and a person freezes it during the time it is halted, their price for the contest will be whatever it is frozen at AS LONG AS it remains frozen until the contest ends. Otherwise, the price will be the close of the first day of trading after the halt is lifted. Also, you cannot use those funds to buy or trade into any other stock while it is halted - just as in real life.
22) Fill/Kill will be offered to anyone who wants to not have to watch the screen every day. It will be for one week only and only one at a time per person. It is based on closing prices. Explanation of Fill/Kill: http://www.investorshub.com/boards/read_msg.asp?message_id=11239102
23) If a company gets sold during the contest, all normal rules apply. See this post. http://www.investorshub.com/boards/read_msg.asp?message_id=11259177
24) DIGIRULE: This is a rule that comes into play only at the very end of the contest and only if the championship is on the line. It is designed to prevent extremely small dollar trades from affecting the outcome.
25) The deadline for all transactions is the market close on Friday, December 4 (one week before the end of the contest). A freeze (no longer a transaction) can be made up to the last day.
EARNINGS REQUIREMENT: To qualify, a stock (other than the wild card) must meet VMC earnings rules which are explained in the IBox on the VMC board http://www.investorshub.com/boards/board.asp?board_id=3251 Essentially, it means that a stock must report** quarterly for at least a year or as long as it has been public. No exceptions. Secondly, the company must have earnings in the most recent quarter - or if not, more earnings than losses in the most recent two quarters - or if not, more earnings than losses in the most recent three quarters - or if not, more earnings than losses in the most recent four quarters. In other words, there must be some interval of time (1, 2, 3 or 4 quarters) where the company has positive earnings.
