ABH3VT COMMENTARY
With a hat-tip to Researcher59, whose style for this note I have shamelessly copied, I submit my write up for the VMC Champions Board:
PERSONAL BACKGROUND
I'm 43 years old and have lived in NYC for the past 10 years. Married, with 2 kids, I work out of my home office and have been a full time investor/trader since 1995. I also manage money for friends and family via a general partnership that I set up back in 2000 to manage money in a format similar to a mutual fund. I was introduced to the stock market through my father when I was in high school. Our timing was pretty good as the great bull market of the 1980s and 1990s had just gotten under way. I was smitten and decided to major in economics, which was the only market oriented degree I could find at Amherst College. I graduated in 1988 (the year after the crash) and drifted into management consulting. It wasn't really what I wanted to do, but it gave me time when I wasn’t working at my full-time job to get introduced to the internet and online investing in the early 1990s (anyone remember the old Prodigy bulletin boards??) I did well enough in those years by riding some of the early internet stocks but never felt comfortable with the momentum trading style. My investing philosophy eventually gravitated toward a value oriented style, but I wanted to combine this with stocks that were still fast growers. That led me into the world of microcap stocks, which was the only segment of the market where I could find companies that appeal to BOTH growth and value investors. I was an early participant in the Yahoo stock boards and Raging Bull and followed everyone over to Ihub about 4-5 years ago...and have been here every since.
INVESTING PHILOSOPHY
When I first started out, I read as much investing material as I could get my hands on. I read everything from Peter Lynch to William O'Neill and even some classics like "Reminiscences of a Stock Operator" and Graham and Dodd's "Security Analysis". Another book that was instrumental in shaping my investing style was "What Works on Wall Street" by James Shaughnessy. It had some good long-term data for different investing styles and argued for a value style married to relative strength/momentum. One of the stunning numbers that came out of that book was the incredible returns available in microcap stocks.......and I was determined to narrow down the best microcap stocks based upon what I felt would appeal to both growth and value investors. What I've come to believe is that stocks that are cheap relative to their forward earnings growth (low PEG ratios) offer the best opportunities for appreciation. So, for every stock that I look at, I try to predict what they will be able to show in earnings per share in the coming year, trying to factor in such things as seasonality, lumpiness in sales and orders, one-time expenses (or income), tax rates, dilution from warrants and options, etc. I also look at operating strengths such as ability to generate cash flow from operations, low debt levels, barriers to entry, and gross margin expansion (i.e. ability to scale up easily). What are constraints on this growth? What is the likelihood that a company will need to issue more stock to meet this demand? How much insider buying is occurring? What is the organic revenue growth rate and how sustainable is it? What forward multiple will the market be willing to give this stock relative to its competitors? I tend to favor the defensive and less cyclical sectors like medical/health care, education, food, etc and avoid the extremely competitive, low margin businesses. I also place a premium on predictable, visible sales growth with expandable margins, so that eps can grow at a faster rate than sales. I keep spreadsheets of selected income statement, balance sheet and cash flow information by stock and also track all PRs or other relevant filing info that comes from the company. I participate on conference calls and attend investor conferences. I will call up the CFO and/or the CEO on specific questions that aren't Reg FD challenges - (assuming that they can speak English!) In short, I try to do everything legally possible to figure out why a company is doing well and what the likelihood is that it will be able to maintain that condition and create strong catalysts for new shareholders to want to own the stock (at higher prices) in the future.
Once I find a company I like, I then look for a good price level to buy in. Sometimes that will mean looking at obvious levels of technical support, and I always determine a "margin of safety" for that specific company. For example, once I have come up with what I consider to be a reasonable range for fair value, I will start buying at prices that are 65% of FV. I usually like to average down a few times, "legging" into a position over time and thus lowering my cost basis. How often I do this depends upon how much I like the strengths of the company and how compelling the value is. Other times, I have to judge market conditions and move faster to get into a full position. I also don't usually like to invest more than 6% of my portfolio in any one stock, although I will and have made exceptions to this rule. I typically hold around 15-25 stocks at any one time, although my top 10 is generally weighted much heavier than other positions. My returns since Dec 2000 have averaged nearly 20%/year and that is without the benefit of any leverage.....in fact, I'm usually heavily in cash at most points and have rarely been more than 60% invested at any one time during that period. (I’m around 30% invested at present.) I have had only one down year since 1995, and that was 2008. I am still learning more about how to professionally manage a portfolio and would like to get better at shorting/hedging, either by shorting individual stocks, ETFs, or using options on indexes to hedge. I have rarely used these tactics, although one could argue that my heavy cash positions provide downside protection and act as a decent buffer on volatility.
PSL12 CONTEST
A lot of factors came together to create a perfect environment for my picks to do well in the most recent contest. All of my stocks were focused upon growth in China, and this meant I was in one of the hottest sectors of the market. I attribute this to a growing recognition and acceptance during the last few months that China's economy was going to emerge relatively unscathed this year from the economic meltdown in the US and Europe. Second, risk taking came back into vogue during the summer and that, along with sidelined cash coming into the market drove a lot of "hot" money into some of the stocks that I picked. While I think that all the increases in price were justified, often these moves take much longer to occur, not necessarily a few weeks or months! With that said, I chose the following as my starting six: CBPO.OB.....CKGT.OB.....RINO.OB......TXIC........WEMU.OB........YGYB.OB
My biggest winners in the contest were RINO and TXIC. RINO (a pollution-abatement equipment company selling to major iron/steel cos in China) benefited from uplisting to the NASDAQ during the contest period, which opened it up to a wider range of investors. It also was able to show two very strong quarters of eps and sales growth that were no longer impacted by large non-cash charges that had hurt eps numbers in the prior year. TXIC was trading at a 3x forward multiple when I first bought it and the fact that it had a better than expected quarter and had exposure to the truck and SUV market in China made it a stock that investors/traders wanted to own. Selling those stocks when I did and locking in decent gains were important, but I then used the proceeds to buy a couple of radio stocks that had been mentioned on the VMC board by several others (thanks MikeDD and Nelson). I bought SALM and ETM as I thought they represented the best of that segment at the prices available, and both appreciated nicely in the closing weeks of the contest to propel me to the win. The radio stocks appealed to me because of how cheap they were on an adjusted earnings basis (backing out the impairment charges) and because they had very good free cash flow which I thought would appeal to the value investors out there. It also did not hurt that a few momentum traders bought them for their charts, which showed them all bursting out of long-term bases after some sharp declines in 2008. WEMU was the only pick that I lost on, because they reported a very poor Q2 result. I was fortunate to only lose about 8% there. CBPO, CKGT, and YGYB were all solid examples of what I like: strong sales and eps growth, low PE and PEG ratios, good operating metrics (low debt, decent cash flow, etc), and participation in defensive sectors. YGYB got noticed by the Motley Fool, CKGT benefited from the general rotation into low PE, high growth China stocks, and CBPO is simply a strong company in a very protected and profitable blood plasma product niche. All had been sold off during 2008 and early 2009, so some of this rise was a reversion to the mean and IMHO long overdue.
Some final comments: Successful investing is a function of having risk:reward ratios in your favor as much as possible and knowing when to sell and when to overweight certain stocks. In order to accomplish this, I have to work and dig harder than the person I just bought from (or sold to). I am an inveterate “fader”which means I generally am happier going against the crowd, selling when stocks are soaring and buying dips or crashes. My holding periods vary greatly, depending upon the fundamental outlook and the initial reasons for buying a certain stock. If the story has changed substantially for the worse, I sell immediately. If bad news is because of temporary issues, I will re-evaluate and look to add on weakness or hold and look to sell at better prices in the future. Once a stock has hit my FV range, I start to sell it off slowly, trying to milk as much out of a rise as possible and then wait for more earnings information. I always want to have identifiable future catalysts on my side to generate buying enthusiasm, and there is nothing like strong sales and earnings per share growth to create that. Never be ashamed at taking a profit, but adjust your selling discipline a bit if the market is telling you that you are undervaluing your stocks and selling way too early. Establish a comfort level and decide which scenario is more painful: missing out on the potential upside of a blow-off top or watching a relatively overvalued stock you own dramatically decline in value.
We have a lot of very talented and insightful posters on our Ihub board and I feel fortunate to be a part of this group. I hope that some will find this information helpful and I look forward to contributing more in the future.
He also won Mr consistency as well for the clean sweep.
ABH:
Extremely well-deserved and overdue. You have always been one of the best stock-pickers on VMC. Your DD is excellent! Congratulations and good luck on trying to repeat.
Oh, and congratulations on winning the tournament too - the first time anyone has won both in the same contest.
Len
2Morrow:
You are correct. Nobody has won both in the same contest. Only one other person has won both in different contests - Gilead.

Mr. Consistency Standings
The Methodology: I provided a Mr. Consistency stat in VMC PSL 1, but couldn't do it in contest 2 + 3 due to trades. Anyway I found a new way to handle the situation in VMC PSL 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and beyond. Yes it it a different calculation then the one used in VMC PSL 1, but I still believe it shows a consistent stock picker, hence I'm going to call it Mr. Consistency standings.
Now first it is important to recognize that we start out with 6 position and end with 6 position. We may not have 6 different stocks in the portfolio, or the same 6 stocks we started with, but we still have 6 different positions.
From a calculation standpoint, we Take out the top performing and Worst Performing position of each person's PSL. We then Average the other 4 and we get an answer. I'm not going to bore anyone with the math behind it as it is very boring. But I believe this should give you a good idea of what I've done.
As you can see from a consistency standpoint. ABH3VT was up 127.30% using the consistency standings. So congrats to ABH3VT he is Mr. Consistency. There are 47/51 portfolios in positive territory using this stat instead of 44/51 the way we look at it to get a VMC PSL Champion. Well anyways I hope everyone enjoys this, I put a lot a work into this one, but I feel it is worth it.

My guess is because of Improved market conditions Trade Usage has really started to improve. Will be interesting to see where it goes from here. Hope this helps.

Commentary: As we can see if we look at the 12 contests the $0.20-0.99 Purchase Price stocks are doing the best, and the $10+ stocks have done the worst. In My Opinion, this is very interesting to see if the trends continue, although it might not mean much I still like the info. And I hope everyone else likes it too.
How stocks did in Purchase Price groups?
I put it into 5 groups as you can see below.
$.25-.99 Purchase Price
$1.00-2.99 Purchase Price
$3.00-4.99 Purchase Price
$5.00-9.99 Purchase Price
$10+ Puchase Price
Number Of Stocks in each group
$.25-.99 Purchase Price:31
$1.00-2.99 Purchase Price:63
$3.00-4.99 Purchase Price:28
$5.00-9.99 Purchase Price:23
$10+ Puchase Price: 28
% Loss For Each Group
$.25-.99 Purchase Price: +75.44%
$1.00-2.99 Purchase Price:+27.05%
$3.00-4.99 Purchase Price:+38.99%
$5.00-9.99 Purchase Price:+22.97%
$10+ Puchase Price: -5.37%
So as we can see the $0.25-0.99 stocks had the best Performance +75.44%, and the $10+ did the worst down -5.37%. Don't know if this means anything, but just presenting another stat for everyone to look at. Hope everyone enjoys the info.
VMC PSL 12 Indexes
Commentary: We have numerous indexes to present this contest. So without further ado let me give a brief explanation of them. The The Top 9 Index is made up of all stock being picked at least 5 times in the contest, this index is equally weighted. The Top 173 Index, is also equally weighted, and measures the average performance of all the stocks picked in this contest (Our stock universe). The Average Portfolio Return, measure the average performance of the 49 portfolios. These indexes or averages should be familiar to everyone, as I have presented these in past contest(s).
Other indexes to be presented: Average Wildcard Index this index measures the average performance of the 19 wildcards chosen in the contest, this index is equally weighted. Average Non Wildcard Index This index measures the average performance of the 154 non-wildcard entries, and this index is also equally weighted as well. Average Wildcard Index (Weighted Average) this index only difference from the Average Wildcard Index is this index uses a weighted average approach. What This basically means is there are 27 units in this portfolio, obviously the majority of stock only have 1 unit, but a stock like AGT has 8 units because it was picked 8 times in the contest. Average Non Wildcard Index (Weighted Average) this index only difference from the Average Non Wildcard Index is this index uses a weighted average approach. What this basically means is there are 267 units in this portfolio, obviously the majority of stock only have 1 unit, but a stock like LPIH.OB is weighted much more heavily and has 12 units because it was picked 12 times in the contest. Next, we get to the Average Portfolio (Original) the only difference between this index and the average portfolio return is it excludes the impact of transactions, meaning if no one could make transactions (Which is obviously not the case) this would be the average portfolio return. The Champions Index is basically and index that takes the average of the all the former PSL champions in PSL 12. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to ask, and I will answer them to the best of my ability. Hope you enjoy the info.

What do you mean terrible time to start a contest??
We started PSL4, PSL7 and PSL10 at the same time!
Whatever you will be doing that prevents you from having two minutes to pick six stocks... have fun.
Len
lentinman: Count me out. I have too much work to do. Terrible time to start a contest, imo.
PLS13 Board has been created:
I will get the IBOX updated as soon as possible, but you know the rules. PSL 13 begins in a week. In fact, the deadline is this next Friday. Remember, there is only one week between contests this time.

Get your picks ready asap, please. Also, if you are not planning on participating in PSL13... WRONG ANSWER.

lol, He should still post his picks for us, so we can buy them
It will be without R59. He's agree that he is too good for the rest of us.

The winner gets... A year's subscription to IHUB....plus pride in being the #1 performer against a lot of very good stockpickers on the best stockpicking board on the internet. And, they get highlighted on the VMC Champions Board. http://www.investorshub.com/boards/board.asp?board_id=4067
ELIGIBILITY Solely up to the moderators of this board. Any contestant who is booted from IHUB during the contest is ineligible to win any individual PSLcontest.
A FEW POINTS
All picks will be "blind" picks. By that, it means they will have to be based upon the person's best guess rather than by seeing what others have done. When the picks are made, they will be deleted (hidden) from the board. Once the deadline passes, all picks by each person will be shown in the Ibox.
PSL12 will begin on Tuesday, May 26 and end on Friday, August 28th. Everyone must have their picks in before May 22nd at 4PM EST. All beginning prices will be as of the the close on Friday, May 22nd.
All picks need to be done on this board and not via PM so that we have a record. Also, you can never be sure if whoever you send it to is even around or reading PMs. If you post it on the board, it is permanent and fixed in time.
We will list each person's picks in the Ibox in alphabetical order.
CONTEST RULES
Shown below are all the rules with respect to PSL12. THERE IS ONE NEW RULE CHANGE.
New Rule: "Buy a Transaction"
After a contestant uses their four trades they have the right to buy up to three trades at a cost.
The first transaction costs 10% of the unit (or stock position) you are trading out of.
The second transaction costs 15% of (see above).
The third transaction costs 20% of (see above).
1) Pick exactly 6 stocks that you believe will have the greatest appreciation during the period of the contest.
2) Only cash dividends of over 10% will be adjusted for. Stock dividends and splits will always be adjusted for.
3) Each stock must be at least 25 cents as of the deadline for making your picks. If one of your stocks is below 25 cents on the close, you will have until midnight (assuming no news) to pick another stock that qualifies. If not, a cash position will be assigned to your portfolio.
4) Stocks must meet VMC earnings & reporting requirements (see explanation immediately below this list) with the exception that one WILD CARD pick will be allowed (see #16 below).
5) A minimum $5,000 average daily dollar volume for the previous three months is required on any original or any new stock. This is calculated as the Yahoo 3-month average shares traded times the closing price of the stock.
6) Foreign stocks are allowed as long as they are trackable on Yahoo. Some foreign stocks have pinky versions and that is ok.
7) One of your 6 original positions can be a cash position.
8) No options or warrants or mutual funds. ETF's are ok.
9) No limit on market cap.
10) It is not required that you disclose whether you own these stocks.
11) First come, first serve. All GROUPS of 6 must be unique. If a person already has your exact 6 choices you will need to make at least one substitution. This has not happened so far and is very unlikely.
12) You will receive 4 transactions during the contest. You can use 0, 1, 2, 3 or all four. That is up to you.
13) All transactions will be done as of the next closing price. If the transaction is done after the close, it will be as of the close of the following market day. There is a one half hour grace period to allow for UNDOING a trade - assuming there is no news involved to either part of the transaction during that half hour. This is because many closing prices are not available until 20 minutes after the close.
14) A transaction can be a trade or an unfreeze (just like it sounds). A double down (see below) is also a transaction. All transactions should be done on the PSL board - and not via PM.
DOUBLE DOWNS
--- A double down will be allowed where you can trade one of your stocks (or cash) into a "double" position of one of your other stocks (or cash).
--- Once double downed, always doubled downed. In other words, when two stocks are merged into one, they cannot be unmerged. You can trade, freeze or unfreeze the merged unit just as you would a single unit.
--- Once two stocks have been merged via a double down they cannot be double downed into another stock or another stock cannot be double downed into them. A maximum of 2+2 of the 6 units can be merged together. In other words, you can have two double downs at once with two other stocks that are not doubled - ie 4 stocks and 6 units.
--- A maximum of two double downs are allowed per contest.
--- You cannot double down until two weeks have passed - after the close of Thursday, June 4th - which will allow it to be in effect as early as June 8th - two weeks into the contest.
--- Only stocks that meet the earnings rule, the volume rule and the .25 rule can be double downed into.
15) Buy a Transaction: These are additional transactions beyond the four free ones. The first transaction costs 10%. The second transaction costs 15%. The third transaction costs 20%.
16) Any stock - whether frozen or not - can be traded for cash, or another stock. In all cases, the value of the entity that you are trading away must be reinvested in total into the new entity.
17) There will be one Wild Card allowed. One of your picks can deviate from the VMC rule - either in terms of earnings or in terms of being a non-reporting pinky.
18) You are only allowed up to two short positions.
SHORT POSITIONS: A short position must take the form of any ETF. Shown below are four double-beta shorts against the corresponding index...
--- QID: Nasdaq 100
--- SDS: S&P 500
--- MZZ: S&P MidCap 400
--- DXD: Dow Jones Industrial Average
and one single beta short.
--- DOG: Dow Jones Industrial Average
19) A stock does not trade the day AFTER you pick it.
Trade: If one stock trades - whether Stock A (Sell) Or Stock B (Buy) you get a cash position and a transaction is used. If neither stock trades, the transaction is void.
Freeze: If you freeze a stock, whether it trades the following day or not is irrelevant. The freeze takes affect.
Unfreeze: If you unfreeze a stock, the unfreeze is voided and no transaction is used.
20) The 15% rule is designed specifically to discourage picking stocks that have low liquidity. Thus risk is associated with shooting the moon on a potentially bogus trade. However, this rule is NEGATED if the first trade the following day has a dollar volume of at least $50,000 OR if the stock ends above +15% on $100,000 in dollar volume.
---If you make a trade, and the stock you bought opens the next day up 15% or more on no news (and closes above 15%), the trade is voided. The stock you sold turns into cash. 1 Transaction used.
---If you unfreeze a stock and it opens the next day at 15% or more on no news (and closes above 15%), the trade is voided. 1 Transaction used.
---If you sell or freeze a stock and it opens the next day down 15% or more on no news (and closes below 15%), the trade is voided. 1 Transaction used.
-- Own ABC. You sell or freeze. It opens +15%+. Irrelevant
-- Own ABC. You sell or freeze. It opens -15%+. Rule applies
-- Don't own ABC. You buy or unfreeze. It opens +15%+. Rule applies
-- Don't own ABC. You buy or unfreeze. It opens -15%+. Irrelevant
21) If a stock is halted for any reason and a person freezes it during the time it is halted, their price for the contest will be whatever it is frozen at AS LONG AS it remains frozen until the contest ends. Otherwise, the price will be the close of the first day of trading after the halt is lifted. Also, you cannot use those funds to buy or trade into any other stock while it is halted - just as in real life.
22) Fill/Kill will be offered to anyone who wants to not have to watch the screen every day. It will be for one week only and only one at a time per person. It is based on closing prices. Explanation of Fill/Kill: http://www.investorshub.com/boards/read_msg.asp?message_id=11239102
23) If a company gets sold during the contest, all normal rules apply. See this post. http://www.investorshub.com/boards/read_msg.asp?message_id=11259177
24) DIGIRULE: This is a rule that comes into play only at the very end of the contest and only if the championship is on the line. It is designed to prevent extremely small dollar trades from affecting the outcome.
25) The deadline for all transactions is the market close on Friday, August 14th (two weeks before the end of the contest). A freeze (no longer a transaction) can be made up to the last day.
EARNINGS REQUIREMENT: To qualify, a stock (other than the wild card) must meet VMC earnings rules which are explained in the IBox on the VMC board http://www.investorshub.com/boards/board.asp?board_id=3251 Essentially, it means that a stock must report** quarterly for at least a year or as long as it has been public. No exceptions. Secondly, the company must have earnings in the most recent quarter - or if not, more earnings than losses in the most recent two quarters - or if not, more earnings than losses in the most recent three quarters - or if not, more earnings than losses in the most recent four quarters. In other words, there must be some interval of time (1, 2, 3 or 4 quarters) where the company has positive earnings.
