VMC PSL 22 Indexes
Commentary: We have numerous indexes to present this contest. So without further ado let me give a brief explanation of them. The The Top 15 Index is made up of all stock being picked at least 3 times in the contest, this index is equally weighted. The Top 160 Index, is also equally weighted, and measures the average performance of all the stocks picked in this contest (Our stock universe). The Average Portfolio Return, measure the average performance of the 39 portfolios. These indexes or averages should be familiar to everyone, as I have presented these in past contest(s). Average Portfolio (Original) the only difference between this index and the average portfolio return is it excludes the impact of transactions, meaning if no one could make transactions (Which is obviously not the case) this would be the average portfolio return. The Champions Index is basically and index that takes the average of the all the former PSL champions in PSL 22. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to ask, and I will answer them to the best of my ability. Hope you enjoy the info.
Top 15 Index: -0.98%
Top 160 Index: +0.37%

Top 15 Index: -0.02%
Top 160 Index: +0.67%
Average Portfolio Return +1.59%
Average Portfolio Return (Original): +1.54%
Champions Index: +3.64%
Completely agree nelson1234 on the KiK putting up probably some of the most consistently interesting pix over a long duration in the contests. Not sure how he digs up so many newer ideas most contests regardless of outcomes.
As for the rules changes and consistent evolution of contests over time, I probably shouldn't chime in since I don't participate any more But I do like simple.
Overall IMO I-Hub has deteriorated (or maybe I just wasn't aware in the past of some of the constant, uh, whatever-you-call-it) but the ValueMicrocaps Motherboard I must admit has kept itself together very well thru all the fuss and muss.
Kind of the last light left on in the town... Hopefully that last light doesn't burn out, otherwise I'd have very little reason to visit I-Hub. Ever.
Good luck to all the contestants!

Understood ... I consider myself a pretty fair picker and an extremely mediocre trader.
I do look at the charts on trades of stocks that have volume to see what can be gleaned.
Have a great day N
fre
I agree that KiK would liely dominate because of his skills under almost any rule set.
I should have been clearer - the trades people make are irrelevant to ME as I look to gain value from this contest.
Fast, I believe he was saying that freezes/trades are irrelevent in the contest's benefits to others. They are certainly not irrelevent to who wins a contest. I agree with NSOM.
The benefit to VMC comes from the contest selections, not the trades.
best.
I totslly disagree that trades are irrelevant. As support I will simply point to KIK who used 4 freezes and 5 trades in his victory in VMC22. CL001 finished 2nd up 50% and he was one of 9 others to use all 4 trades.
No investor says here's 100,000, spread it across 6 stocks and sell them all in three months.
Winning in the market requires picking the right stocks and knowing when to hold 'em and when to fold 'em.
Change the rules all you want and I bet KIK will still dominate because he has both skills.
fred
Good point, what I didn't think about was that if you sell a stock it doesn't count as a trade. That certainly changes the situation in this regard. Thx.
First of all I can disagree with that. If there a stock you don't like you can always sell it and put it in cash, that doesn't cost a trade at all, so you not stuck in a stock, but is 5 trades enough, I will ponder that. But the idea that your trapped in any stock is compeltely incorrect. Hope This Helps
I'm going to guess SSKILLZ1 allowed more trades to come in because it inevitable lead to more fresh picks coming in. That's gotta be a good thing for those of us who like having fresh ideas.
The freeze likewise is a great idea because it helps encourage people to make picks that they may otherwise be fearful about making and being stuck with them no matter what. Again, the rule ultimately leads to more picks and more ideas.
Way to go SSKILLZ1.
By the way, even though I couldn't play this past contest, I still used it to gain ideas and found it very helpful. For those who only care about the ideas it generates and not who wins or loses, SSKILLZ1 made it simple for you as well -- you can pick 6 equally weighted picks then walk away. The additional rules just allow more ideas to surface, nothing more. I think it's great.
Don't try. Make yourself happy and the administration simple, even if imperfect.
We might lose a player or two but we will retain many more.
Too many people are thinking tactically here, instead of strategically.
Who cares who wins the contest or if the trade they made could not really happen in the real world? I for one don't.
What really matters is that there **IS** the next contest and we get a snapshot of what our community members, and valued guests, are thinking at that point in time.
Don't over think it, and don't overreact. The long-term community here is gonna hang with you.
Agree with nelson, it's about the picks, sharing DD, getting new ideas.....and seeing how the collective consciousness of our group performs through Mr. Sheep portfolio...which is always impressive.
The trading, freezing, and all that other stuff is kind of pointless to me....and hence I don't think I've ever actually posted a trade in one of these contests.
Thanks again for all your efforts to coordinate this SSK.
nelson - I heartily agree. This contest is an "idea mine" and the big value is in the initial picks, not the trades.
Day to day we all post about stocks but are looking at different time frames, different risk management and portfolio management standards, different risk tolerance, different objectives, etc. What the PSL contests do is to constrain all the players to a common set of rules. Who's thinking what, under a common set of criteria? To a large degree, it does not matter WHAT set of rules, but it is important for there to be a COMMON set of rules to allow ideas to be evaluated against each other! Whether the COMMON set of rules is optimum from a particular contestant's vantage point is a second-order consideration from MY vantage point.
I know I look for the picks from KiK, CL001, R59 and Bobwins plus whoever has been hot. A lot of this it not due to their performance in the PSL contests (though that has been good) but rather because having read their posts and DD here over the years I have a sense of what they are looking for and how they go about DD, and I can relate to those methods. There are other good stock pickers that for whatever reason I just don't resonate with (probably says more about me than about them).
One further comment - the one negative about these contests is that they do tend to foster and bring out a behavior that is a big negative about stock message boards - an overly confrontational and defensive posture about "my picks vs. your picks and which turned out better". Too many posters seem to care more about what someone thinks of them as a stock picker than what that person thinks of them as a human being. There are a lot of posters here on iHub (more so for iHub at large than VMC, but the observation does apply here to some extent) who seem to live by "my way or the highway".
It is more about the dialogue than about pronouncements from on high.
I think SSK is way off the deep end for being willing to commit to possibly 10X as much work with 15 possible stocks and 4X as many trades.
I'm sure many, like myself, will not pick 15 stocks or make all the trades but it will no doubt be a lot more work.
The goal of the contest, sharing picks and trade timing, should benefit greatly. More picks, much greater trade flexibility and much more realistic.
SSK, Big Thanks for all of your effort.
fred
Thank you, sir, and you're right -- only reason I didn't participate in the very last contest was because I wasn't eligible.
I think my suggestions have been made in a respectful manner. I look forward to the next contest and will continue to make suggestions if I think of any that will benefit us all. Looking forward to the next contest and thank you for listening to us all.
Your right about one thing I can't make everyone happy, no matter what I do apparently. LOL.
SSK - apply the KISS principle, whatever you do, and don't burn out trying to please everyone. Can't be done.
Personally I like the old rules......twenty five cents per share min, and whatever the trading volume limit was. I dont think we need a whole lot of trades, or intraday trades, or weekly trades, or a dozen positions....
...its just too complicated. And, I like the four times a year contest.
Thats because I dont care all that much who wins the contest. I mean, I am impressed by Kik's legacy, and the other winners....
....but whats most important to me is the list of stocks, particularly ones that havent been mentioned before, or in a long time......and vetting those stocks to see if I like any enuf to enter.
And by the way, guess who submitted more of those stocks that I found interesting enuf to buy.....Kik....big surprise.
I dont care who freezes what stock when, and how those trades work out. Its virtually meaningless. I mean throw some of them in to make the contest fun. But its all about the original list of stocks offered by VMCers. Not trying to make a simulated mini trading market.
Heck, I'd prefer a pick six and hold for three months. I mean who gives a shit who's the best short term trader?
best.
In fairness he has participated in a lot of these contests recently except PSL 22, where he was residing in jail I believe at the contest deadline, so he does participate. lets be fair what did he say really wrong originally. I agree with him, if I didn't even add the 10k volume qualifier, and the under .25 rule, we are not talking about the GLMB debacle, I should have never left a loophole like that, but I did, as for some reason I didn't see the obvious coming. But that okay that will be changed for PSL 23.

True that CPTMatt, this contest originated as an idea for all of us VMC contributors to share our picks and share some due diligence on our favorite picks. I personally come here to look for undiscovered stocks, where the "efficient market" rules may not always apply and a possible golden opportunity could be found.....and this contest and KIK in particular, brings more new names to my radar screen than any other individual contributor on these boards.
So anyway, I'm not sure why we're taking input from someone who has been banned from the VMC board for making offensive comments and doesn't even participate in the contest anyway.
Allright guys this is getting old, with who I agree with. To me it is clear I have taken thoughts from a number of people to first come up with new contest rules, and I have taken thoughts from people to change how I explain those rules, or add on to those rules. The I said it/you said it stuff, I let go on enough. So any more post that go after each other, I will be deleting posts.

So with that in mind.... can I offer you:
Second, and I realize this might not be changeable. I guess selling a stock with an intraday price is not possible in the contest due to the fact that one can't be around all the time?
Intraday prices can't be done, because I can't be there every second to confirm those prices.
Skillz, 2 things from my part. These are just my suggestions so don't take it as critic or something. If I have 12-15 stocks or whatever number one choses, 5 trades per month is not enough. That would mean that one can't react at all on 10 stocks out of 15, for a complete month! Am I the only one who thinks that way?
First of all I can disagree with that. If there a stock you don't like you can always sell it and put it in cash, that doesn't cost a trade at all, so you not stuck in a stock, but is 5 trades enough, I will ponder that. But the idea that your trapped in any stock is compeltely incorrect. Hope This Helps.

Awesome job as usual, SSKILLZ1. Thanks.
To everyone:
The contest needed some changes, and I exacerbated the problem in PSL 22 with the 10k traded shares also get you through with a stock at .10, that is a 1,000 dollars of trading volume, what a shock that a stock like that could have huge spreads. I should of seen that one coming, but I didn't.
Now everyone here has a very different idea what the ideal contest is. What everyone could agree on is PSL 22 rules needed at the very least to be altered as the new volume rule was a disaster.
The main idea of this contest is get ideas from it. With the new rules more stocks will in general be picked, because the old limit was 6 stocks, now it is 15, which should give us more ideas to look at. So the new rukles should be a success on that front.
The 25k dollar volume rule and the .25 share price, should get rid of the GLMB loopholes of the world, so that should be fixed.
And if you are on that just likes to pick 5-6-7 or all the way up to 15 stocks, and wants to buy and hold you can do that too. You don't want to be bother with dollar terms, give me a lsit of stocks and tell me just invest in them equally, and it will be nice and simple for you.
If you want to weight stocks some more then others you can do that. If you want to trade, you can do so more actively, if you don't want to trade alot you can do that to.
I personally think this new contest, although alot of work for me, will give everyone there chance to do what they want to do. I'm given you all options of how to do things, there is no reason to fight with each other, if you have any concerns I listen and read everyone's thoughts, and weight it equally.
Admittingly I'm going to have to expound on some of my rules, but that was just a braoder outline, and some very good point have been made. This contest will be very realistic. Will PSL 24 be in the dsame format, I have no idea, I can always go back to the old rules with 25k minimum dollar volume and .25 share price, and things should be relatively fine with more trades. Anyways hope this helps.
Why are you whining to me? Talk to SSKILLZ1. I don't run the contests.
Thanks Rawnoc. I do so cherish your wit.
Since you didn't read my post I've copied and pasted a portion below and I'll leave at that. Feel free to get the last word since I know that you'll want to.
My opinion is why not at least suggest doing what seems to be the easiest and most straight-forward thing?

Ouch Rawnoc. Try not to stuff so many words in my mouth next time, thanks buddy.
SSK can do whatever he wants since it is his contest, not yours and not mine. You may not have noticed but there was a discussion going on and opinions were asked for. My point was rather clear.
You have implied that PSL's have been consistently won because of the liquidity/spread weakness in the rules. The majority of this seemed to revolve around who is #1. If it is that important to you to game the system then go right ahead, I already said what I thought about it.
Just because the contest has weakness doesn't necessitate putting in a laundry list of changes. It necessitates people having a little integrity and calling people to the table if necessary which can accomplish the same thing. My opinion is why not at least suggest doing what seems to be the easiest and most straight-forward thing?
And for the record yes I do have a pretty low opinion of your character. I also believe that you're trying to stir things up here because of your recent stay in the iHub jail. But that's really an aside to the main point which is the rule changes.
Hey, Tom, good to hear from you! Any updates on TRDY that I was on my hands and knees begging you to sell and not be all in on?
Thanks, dude!

PS -- gonna play the contest here? I think you'd do really well!
Reality check people. Who REALLY cares about altering the rules here? This seems to be like ordering a pizza and everyone wants something slightly different. What is the intent? To get some good competition and uncover new investments to everyone's benefit right? Hasn't that been happening?
Some are starting to sound like the government and focusing on this "fairness" issue. Who cares if there a loophole around illiquid stocks. Is it being gamed by everyone all the time? No it is not.
The implication by Rawnoc is completely incorrect and his statement that "if that's the case I'll just game the PSL and win every time" is in my opinion enough for the Mod to show him the door. The PSL is open to everyone but limited to those that respect the spirit of the rules. Howabout just everyone agreeing that if someone is clearly gaming the rules that they get 1 warning and after that based on the Mod's opinion can be banned from all future PSL's. Easy
Ahhh yes, I have had many 'moments of glory' with your 'never again' under $1.00 ....flip play(s). lol
Happy Next New Year...maybe

Above average volume does not mean trading to manipulate the contest. Other much more plausible explanations would be that:
--we have some really good stock pickers here who are good at finding stocks poised to move in the next three months. I know I look for a good company with some kind of "catalyst" expected in the contest period that will increase attention on the stock and hopefully price and volume. The nature of the contest makes this almost certain. Some of those catalysts never happen, and some of the binary event stocks end up with a 0 and not a 1, but it is natural for the top of the list to be comprised of stocks where the contestant got both the stock and the timing right.
--we have some people (myself included) who use the PSL contests an "idea lab" and make a point of researching all of the top picks (buying Mr. Sheep's picks for the last several contests would have yielded a solid return) and/or all of the picks from certain other successful contestants (so would buying KiK's picks, or Cl001's...). Some of this new attention translates to buying and a volume spike, often on stocks with not that much base volume.
You could probably take a poll of the top 2 or 3 performing stocks in each contest...
Because generally 1 of top 3 performing picks would be in the contest winner's picks...
And the poll would likely show that the top 3 performing companies in each contest had above average volume during the contest period in comparison to their average volume...
It seems that companies that stub their toes on volume are generally less likely to perform well...
And the little stubbed toe companies on volume generally lead to contest rule change discussiones...
Hey, if they are trading slow you might as well pass the time with some creative chat...LJ
:} Is SSK a machine???
SSK does the work and should be allowed to set any set of rules he feels is worth his effort to manage.
I am not a big fan of the gamesmanship, not that it matters much to me when I am usually lurking in the bottom quartile and not contending for much of anything. I don't know whether that makes my opinion irrelevant, unbiased, or both.
I think you could solve a lot of problems if all buys were at the ASK, not the last trade price, and all portfolios (and all securities sold) were valued at the BID price of each security. That actually tracks to what the real-life experience is.
The problem with this, of course, is that the b/a figures are worthless after the close, as MMs just walk away and set things on autopilot. I guess it would be possible to go in and find what the bid and ask were 5 minutes before the close on each security involved in a PSL trade each day, but that sounds like a lot of work to me.
I wonder if this work could be done "forensically" -- i.e after the fact and only for those trades that mattered in the final standings. In other words, capture the b/a history for stocks involved in trades, then only at the end of the contest go back and apply "real b/a rules" to all trades made by the winner. If that puts them in second place, then do the same for the new leader, etc. until we have a winner whose trades stand up to a reality check. That way we (SSK) would not waste time micro-analyzing trades that did not matter in the end, but there would be a more "legit" winner.
Or maybe just do the digging and associated adjustments if someone in the top 10 requests an "audit" of a trade done by someone else in the top 10? Or make it like the NFL - you get a "challenge" re someone else's trade, but it costs you one of your trades if the adjusted price is less than 10% different than the original trade price.
I find it very easy to put the ANAL in this ANALysis is SSK is doing all the work! :)
Still sounds like too much work to me, but SSK has a higher pain threshold than I do.
