Bitter? Calif. Researchers Now Want Sugar Controlled Like Alcohol and Tobacco

Should sugar be controlled like alcohol and tobacco? That’s what a group of researchers from the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) seem to think.

Drs. Robert Lustig, Laura Schmidt, and Claire Brindis argue that sugar’s potential for “abuse,” coupled with its “toxicity and pervasiveness in the Western diet,” make it a primary culprit in a worldwide health crisis, according to the UCSF website.

“We are in the midst of the biggest public health crisis in the history of the world,” Dr. Lustig said. “And nobody even gets it. Nobody understands how important this is because they don’t consider it ‘public health.‘ They consider it ’personal responsibility.’”

They argue that the health hazards associated with sugar consumption are similar to those of alcohol — which they note is made from distilling sugar.

And although some researchers have already pointed out that worldwide consumption of sugar has tripled during the past 50 years, therefore possibly leading to an “obesity epidemic,” Drs. Lustig, Schmidt, and Brindis believe that obesity is just one possible symptom of sugar’s toxicity, which goes further than simply being high in calories.

“As long as the public thinks that sugar is just ‘empty calories,’ we have no chance in solving this,” Dr. Lustig said, according to the The Daily Mail.

“There are good calories and bad calories, just as there are good fats and bad fats, good amino acids and bad amino acids, good carbohydrates and bad carbohydrates,” he added, “But sugar is toxic beyond its calories.”

They argue that sugar contributes to 35 million deaths each year from illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. Therefore, they argue, curbing the consumption of sugar could potentially save millions of dollars each year.

“There is an enormous gap between what we know from science and what we practice in reality,” Dr. Schmidt said, “In order to move the health needle, this issue needs to be recognized as a fundamental concern at the global level.”

Dr. Brindis said that the public needs to be better informed about the dangers of sugar with a “wide approach” similar to that seen with tobacco and alcohol, the Daily Mail reports.

What kind of “wide approach”?

They suggest levying special sales taxes, controlling access, and “tightening licensing requirements” on vending machines and snack bars that sell high sugar products in schools and workplaces.

Furthermore, among Dr. Lustig’s more “radical proposals,” to quote Christopher Wanjek of LiveScience, is banning the sale of sugary drinks to consumers under age 17.

“We’re not talking prohibition. We‘re not advocating a major imposition of the government into people’s lives,” Dr. Schmidt said.

“We’re talking about gentle ways to make sugar consumption slightly less convenient, thereby moving people away from the concentrated dose. What we want is to actually increase people‘s choices by making foods that aren’t loaded with sugar comparatively easier and cheaper to get,” she said.

In a UCSFPublicAffairs YouTube video, Dr. Lustig flirts with the idea of taxing the desire out of consumers and compares it to the government’s approach to cigarettes.

“No one’s really talking about how much tax will it take to reduce consumption,” Ludstig said, “We saw this with cigarettes. We basically had to raise the price of a pack up to $11 in New York City to get people to actually stop smoking. And they finally decided: ‘You know what? The craving just isn’t worth it.”

“So the question is how much taxation would you have to do to a can of soda to get somebody to say ‘You know? I really don’t need to do that’?” Lustig asked.

Dr. Lustig argues that although no one is prepared for a cigarette-style tax increase on soda today, we may see that type of action taken tomorrow.

“There have been a lot of other public health campaigns, which initially seemed to be very radical, but today they seem extremely mainstream,” Dr. Brindis said.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Vice President Joe Biden and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton both expressed concerns on Monday about the recent security crackdown that has occurred in China.

Biden and Clinton jointly raised the issue at the opening session of two days of high level talks between the United States and China. They noted the large number of arrests that have occurred in China with the government detaining lawyers, activists, journalists and bloggers in a crackdown widely viewed as a Chinese response to forestall any Middle East-style democracy protests.

Biden said that President Barack Obama believed strongly that protecting fundamental rights and freedoms was "the best way to promote the long-term stability of any society."

State Counselor Dai Bingguo, one of the leaders of the Chinese delegation, said in his remarks that China had made progress in the area of human rights.

The remarks from Biden and Clinton and Dai were made during an opening ceremony of this year's U.S.-China Strategic and Economic Dialogue. The two days of talks will bring together top officials in the areas of economics and foreign policy.

The discussions were begun in 2006 during the Bush administration by then-Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson as a way to bring pressure on China to allow its currency rise in value against the dollar.

The Obama administration in 2009 expanded the talks to cover foreign policy as well as economic issues. This year for the first time, top military leaders from both nations are participating in an effort to ease tensions between the two nations that were heightened last year by U.S. arms sales to Taiwan.

During the opening session on economics, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner praised the efforts China had made in the economic area while saying more needs to be done.

He played down criticism he had made as recently as last week that China needed to move more quickly to allow its currency to rise in value against the dollar. American manufacturers contend the yuan is undervalued by as much as 40 percent, giving Chinese companies tremendous competitive advantages and costing millions of U.S. jobs.

Speaking in Treasury's ornate Cash Room, Geithner said, "Over the past two years, we have seen very promising changes in the overall direction of Chinese economic policy -- towards a more flexible exchange rate, a growth strategy less reliant on exports and stronger protections for U.S. companies operating in and exporting to China."

He said over the next two days of talks the two countries would "continue our dialogue on China's move towards a more flexible exchange rate with more open capital markets."

Last June, China announced that it was allowing the yuan to rise in value against the dollar and since that time its value has increased by about 5 percent. Last week, Geithner said the United States would be pressing for a faster appreciation of the yuan.

American manufacturers contend that the Chinese currency is still undervalued by as much as 40 percent and they complain that this gap gives Chinese companies a tremendous competitive advantage that has widened America's trade deficit and cost millions of U.S. manufacturing jobs.

Geithner and Clinton are leading the U.S. delegation which also includes Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke and representatives from 16 different U.S. government agencies.

The Chinese team is headed by Vice Premier Wang Qishan, a top economic policymaker and by Dai. The leaders of the two delegations were scheduled to meet later Monday with Obama.

Analysts are not expecting major breakthroughs from the talks but hope the discussions will contribute to smoothing relations that were strained by last year's arms sales. As part of that effort, Chinese President Hu Jintao visited Washington for a state visit in January.

China is facing threats of U.S. economic sanctions on goods shipped to America unless Beijing halts trade practices such as its currency undervaluation. which U.S. critics believe violate global trade rules.

For their part, the Chinese, who are America's largest foreign creditor with $1.2 trillion in holdings of U.S. Treasury securities, are seeking assurances that Congress and the administration will resolve their differences and boost the U.S. borrowing limit before an August deadline, when Geithner has said he will run out of maneuvering room to pay America's bills, including making interest payments on U.S. debt.

Congress to see more theatrics over high oil

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. lawmakers will clash this week over strategies for combating high gasoline prices and repealing tax incentives enjoyed by Big Oil companies, but there is little chance of a breakthrough for drivers.

U.S. gasoline prices are set to hover near $4 a gallon this week, about 11 cents off the record hit in 2008, as last week's 15 percent drop in oil prices to below $100 a barrel takes time to work its way to service stations.

Failing more big drops in the oil market, consumers will continue to struggle with high fuel prices.

"There's not much Congress can do" to bring down oil prices in the short term, said Pietro Nivola, a senior fellow in governance at the Brookings Institution, a nonpartisan public policy organization. "The price of oil is set in a global market and we don't control that."

But Democrats and Republicans in Congress, seeking to please their constituents, will try to take action ahead of the presidential and congressional elections next year.

The focus in the Republican-controlled House of Representatives is on forcing President Barack Obama to open up offshore oil drilling, a resource conservatives say has been held in a stranglehold by regulations after the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico last year.

Republicans see high oil prices as a key problem they can blame on Obama after the killing of Osama bin Laden has quieted charges he is not strong enough to lead a nation at war and facing terrorist threats.

The House is slated to vote this week on legislation to set a 60-day deadline for the Interior Department to decide on new offshore drilling permits, one of three bills on opening up drilling.

Last week, the chamber passed a bill that would force the government to conduct lease sales for oil exploration off Virginia and in the Gulf of Mexico.

But the bills will not likely pass in the Senate amid stiff Democratic opposition. The White House said it opposed the lease sale bill because the legislation would undermine safety measures taken after last year's spill.

"The battle lines have been drawn," said David Pumphrey, a fellow at the Center for International and Strategic Studies and former official at the Department of Energy.

"There's a lot of theater right now. It's hard to see how we get closure on meaningful, long-term policies that would have an effect on oil prices."

For their part, Democrats are focusing on getting tough on Big Oil by repealing billions of dollars in tax breaks for the five major oil companies including Exxon Mobil and Chevron.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid had said he wanted a bill to be voted on soon to repeal billions of dollars in tax incentives for oil and natural gas companies. But the legislation has not yet emerged.

Sparks may fly on Thursday at a hearing on cutting the incentives called by Senator Max Baucus, who has invited executives from the oil companies to testify. Baucus released a plan last month to end breaks for the industry.

The Obama administration is also trying to tackle speculation in petroleum markets in hopes of pushing down prices. Attorney General Eric Holder directed a taskforce to look into whether gasoline prices were falling in the wake of the drop in the cost of oil.

Senator Carl Levin, who heads a panel on investigations, said last week he also plans to examine speculation in the oil market. He said the crash in oil prices was proof that speculators are behind volatility in commodity markets.

But analysts said investigations by themselves are unlikely to drive down energy costs.

"Politicians do this every single time there is a run up in energy prices," Brookings' Nivola said. "They might find an occasional example of price gouging, but it's ordinarily not easy to widely prove, no matter what kind of investigation they do."

i don't know a lot about haarp. i don't know why they would build such a facility in alaska unless it is to keep it secret. there is a very large antenna in the northeastern us that can monitor traffic all across the east coast. there was a proposal to build another in the southern us to monitor the borders there also. the antenna in the northeast was in active use, but i do not know if it still is. i believe it's broadcast ability was very limited.

This is a google search for human induced earthquakes. It is very possible that some of disasters are induced to control or to decoy mass attention and psychology.

What you have said is true as we have reports about the warnings to the date, i.e. 3/11/2011, just a few days before the date, I noticed that there were youtube videos about it was coming. However, that day could have been used as "induced earthquake" -- could be.

Only God knows all the facts, but I think that it is very possible that we now have disasters as weapons.

no i don't think anyone could manipulate the weather enough to create an earthquake. that said, if haarp or a haarp-like agency is involved in this situation, it may have aggravated everything and made it much worse. that's the real danger there. when someone thinks they know what they are doing, they always screw things up.

there is a thing called clustering that the weather people here are looking at. once an area gets hit by a storm, it tends to get hit repeatedly by the same type of storm. it's because all the conditions that have to exist for a storm are already there and those conditions will, somtimes, hang on for long periods of time. so the storms keep coming back. they had a county in florida that was hit by 4 hurricanes in one season so the theory is gaining ground among weather people. the same could be true for earthquakes and the conditions that cause them.

Caterpillar [CAT 104.25 3.28 (+3.25%) ], Bank of America [BAC 14.27 0.44 (+3.18%) ] and Boeing [BA 71.71 2.14 (+3.08%) ] led the blue-chip index higher, while AT&T [T 28.13 -0.04 (-0.14%) ] slipped.

The S&P ... 500 gained 22.53 ... points, or 1.72 percent, to close at 1,330.97, the biggest gain since Dec. 1, and the highest close since Feb. 18.

The tech-heavy Nasdaq gained 50.67 points, or 1.8 percent, to close at 2,798.74, also the highest close since Feb. 18.
