Very motivational! I have a newfound respect for Katie Couric.
'Don't Be A Hater'
Katie Couric, Anchor and Managing Editor of the CBS Evening News had some wise words in her speech to Princeton's class of 2009:
And then addressing "all the single ladies" she went on to offer more common-sense:

This morning I gave the Class Day address at Princeton -- I was selected by the students and it was quite an honor, although slightly daunting to follow in the footsteps of Stephen Colbert, Jon Stewart and Jerry Seinfeld. At the precise moment I got up to walk to the podium after being introduced by Neil Chen, Class Vice-President, a hawk dropped its half-eaten lunch (a dead bird) in front of me -- it landed with a thud. I didn't know whether it was a thoughtful gift or a weird omen -- paging Tippi Hedren! The student speakers were incredible. Jackie Bello and Jason Gilbert had the crowd eating from the palms of their hands and were a tough act to follow. My producer Tony Maciulis cried. President Shirley Tilghman and the other speakers were great, too...this generation came of age during 9/11 and are entering the world at a very difficult time, but I have no doubt their intelligence and ambition will see them through. Good luck to all of them -- and please excuse some of the racier jokes -- I was encouraged to be saucy and sassy!
Remarks as prepared for delivery:
Thank you, Neil, for the kind introduction, and thank you for inviting me today, Madame President, Deans, and most of all Graduating Class of 2009.
It's a tremendous honor to be part of your Class Day. When Princeton called to invite me I was thrilled. It also gave me a perfect excuse for turning down Harvard and Yale - my safety schools! And since I’ve been called a cougar lately in the tabloid press – today I’m very happy to be an honorary tiger! Coming here was a real no brainer! After all, I can see New Jersey from my house!
But a funny thing happened on my way to Class Day... I was pregaming in the Slums when there was a "noise complaint" and P-Safe busted me and took my Prox. Luckily I wasn't McCoshed, so I headed to the Street, where I tried to complete a Prospect 10...but was sidetracked playing ROBO at T-I. Very savage! Then I headed to Hoagie Haven and enjoyed a Fat Lady...and polished it off with a donut from the WA. Boy, you Princetonians really know how to live!
But, actually, I do have a bone to pick with you. I have discovered I am the first female Class Day speaker in Princeton's history. OMG, WTF [Thanks for the LOL]
All these years, and only one woman? Now, I understand this isn't Lilith Fair and there are plenty of great men out there...... but you actually asked Bradley Whitford of the West Wing BEFORE you had a woman? I understand the concept of casting a wide net...but great women like Madeline Albright, Sally Ride, Mother Teresa, Ellen Degeneres all bested by a fake political advisor to a fake president!? And then you had Stephen Colbert, a fake TV anchor? Actually, Stephen could be a REAL anchor...with just a little more product in his hair! I must say, I'm shocked you didn't invite Doogie Howser this year, a fake doctor and graduate of Princeton Class of 83. Or maybe you did, but he was too busy on the set of "How I Met your Mother." Or as we call it, My Favorite MILF.
So, I'd like to officially welcome Princeton to the 21st Century. You've embraced the female gender at the perfect time...because it's been quite a year for women.
After all, a Latina has just been nominated to the Supreme Court...only the third woman in history. And I heard she graduated summa cum laude from a little school in New Jersey! Hillary Clinton was the first serious female presidential candidate and made 18 million cracks in the ultimate glass ceiling. And then of course, there's Carrie Prejean, Miss California. No one has done more to motivate gay rights activists since Anita Bryant. [Your parents know who she is.]
In any event, it is an honor to be here and I am moved to be sharing this special moment with parents and professors who may have woken up to me on the Today show....and with students who MAY wake up in time for the CBS Evening News. Although based on the average age of our viewers, I think you're probably watching "Shot at Love with Tila Tequila" instead.
But seriously, thanks for inviting me, and congratulations to you on your graduation....or, more appropriately, your commencement....because the fun is just beginning.
I'm sure you don't need a newsflash that getting a job is no stroll down Nassau Street. I read a study recently that said only 20 percent of graduates who've applied for jobs have one right now. That's down from 51 percent in 2007. In this economic climate, graduates of the Wilson School might actually have to get a job in Government!
There may be some opportunities in the Republican Party. They're still looking for an effective spokesman, and the only person they can find so far is Rush Limbaugh....and he won't take the job because he doesn't want to give up his prescription plan.
But as you head out into this daunting job market, at least you have many illustrious alumni lighting the way.
Like The First Lady of the United States Michelle Obama. She was class of 1985, and now she's wowing them in Washington.
Or...Queen Noor of Jordan, who has traveled so far and done so much in the name of humanitarian causes since her days here on this campus.
The prolific and brilliant writer, Joyce Carol Oates, now a Princeton Professor. Wendy Kopp - Princeton '89 - founder of Teach for America, who has placed 20,000 teachers who have impacted the lives of more than 3 million students in this country. And for 200 please Alex - who is Larissa Kelly? The third all-time jeopardy winner - Class of 2002!
There are a few noteworthy men who were proud to go to Princeton as well...a list that reads like a who's who of American History. James Madison, John Foster Dulles, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Malcolm Forbes, James Baker....and Lyle Menendez, who's currently serving a life sentence at the Mule Creek State Prison in California. Hey, you can't win 'em all!
I would also like to salute notable Princeton grad...Mayor McDaniels...of South Park.
An impressive number of technology giants have also graduated from Princeton. From the father of modern computing, Alan Turing, to Google's CEO, Eric Schmidt, to EBay founder Meg Whitman. And I understand Amazon's Jeff Bezos is offering to replace the Firestone Library with a Kindle. It really makes you wonder why they even built Stanford!
Also doing his part to advance Princeton's impressive technology footprint--Class of 82's David Duchovny, who is single-handedly supporting a major segment of the on-line industry. Apparently, these days Agent Mulder is really into the Triple X Files.
And topping off the list, there's former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer. Given his status as client number nine, it seems particularly fitting that he's a graduate of "Woody Woo." Yesterday you heard from another impressive graduate... General David Petraeus who earned his PhD here in 1987. He's the architect of the U.S. counter-insurgency strategy and has had a brilliant career in the US military. And I understand Class of 54's Donald Rumsfeld has been charged with guarding the Big Cannon.
I don't want to say he's taking his job too far, but he's reportedly been telling President Obama there are Weapons of Mass Destruction hidden at Rutgers.
There certainly ARE many successful graduates of Princeton. And now...it's your turn. More than ever in my lifetime, this nation needs some big, bold thinkers. We need innovators. We need people who look beyond a paycheck and see possibilities.
You've got your degree. NOW, you're about to enroll in a new kind of learning experience. There are plenty of lessons along the way...if you keep your heart and your mind open on the journey.
First, success only knocks on your door if you win the Publisher's Clearinghouse Sweepstakes. All the rest of us have to work for it...hard.
There's that old joke...How do you get to Carnegie Hall? Practice, practice, practice. That's a major point Malcolm Gladwell makes in his book "Outliers." He writes that to truly master something, you need to spend at least 10-thousand hours doing it. Take Bill Gates, for example. He dropped out of Harvard and he still became Bill Gates...by devoting his every waking moment to building and understanding computer codes. The Beatles might have seemed like an overnight sensation, but they played together more than a thousand times before that famous appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1964. For them, it really was a hard day's night...night after night after night...for four years!
I'm no Beatle or Bill Gates, but I've learned the importance of hard work, as well. I was a desk assistant at ABC News in Washington where my major responsibilities were Xeroxing (hey, it was the dark ages!) and making coffee. When I moved to what my network colleagues referred to as Chicken Noodle News in 1980, I finally got a chance to do some reporting...and the President of CNN said he never wanted to see me on air again. It could have been demoralizing; instead I found it motivating! And rather than let the turkeys get me down... I just kept practicing. And I actually got better.
Even today I spend hours preparing for interviews that sometimes are edited down to only a few minutes. It takes a lot of effort...to make things appear effortless.
This year I had the privilege of interviewing Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger, the man who successfully landed a flight on the Hudson River after birds knocked out both engines. He saved all 155 lives onboard. While his story is about heroism, it's also about experience and hard work. He said to me: "For 42 years, I've been making small, regular deposits in this bank of experience, education, and training. And on January 15th, the balance was sufficient so that I could make a sudden large withdrawal."
In other words, practice, practice, practice. It always pays off.
Next, don't be a hater. Princeton has taught you to think critically, to approach things with a healthy dose of skepticism...and that's a good thing, as Martha Stewart would say. But you really must guard against the cynicism and nastiness that are so pervasive today, particularly on the internet. It can be a wonderful, powerful and equalizing tool, but it's also populated by haters and trolls. People think they can say or do anything online under the cloak of anonymity. Don't get sucked in...In his book, entitled "Snark", David Denby writes, "Snark often functions as an enforcer of mediocrity and conformity. In its cozy knowingness, snark flatters you in assuming that you get the contemptuous joke. You've been admitted or re-admitted to a club, but it may be a club of the second rate."
Rise above the collegial nastiness and instead....celebrate excellence. The joy of reveling in someone else's success is much sweeter than the bitter vitriol of sites like Juicy Campus. By the way, Juicy Campus RIP. Shutting that website down, in my view, was a huge victory for civility.
Third, I have a message particularly for all you young women here today...or as Beyonce might say, all the single ladies. John Lennon, once wrote "Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans."
I'm sure you are all graduating with big career goals. You may also have a dream of being married and having a family, and at some point the career may take a backseat. There is no more challenging, rewarding or important job than being a mom. I just want to say this--sometimes dreams of domestic bliss are interrupted by reality. People get divorced. People die. You need to protect yourself. I was very happily married to a wonderful man. He was diagnosed with colon cancer and nine months later, he was gone. I was a single mom with two very young children. This was not part of the plan. Luckily, I had a career and therefore the financial independence to support my children. Many women in my situation are not nearly as fortunate. And while I don't mean to be a Debbie Downer, I want you all to be prepared for the unexpected and approach some of the big life decisions you'll be making with your eyes wide open.
And another thing you probably need to realize: It's not all about you. As you venture out into this big bad world, I hope you each find a way to make it better. As anchor of the Evening News, I've been to Iraq and Afghanistan. I was there for a matter of days...not months or years. No matter what your opinion may be about the wars this nation is fighting, the men and women of the military are making sacrifices every day...and deserve our respect and support when they're deployed...and when they come home.
But there are many ways to serve. When my husband Jay died, I felt I needed to do something. I needed to educate Americans about colon cancer, the second leading cancer killer of men and women in this country...I needed to help them understand that this cancer can often be prevented entirely if people get screened. I didn't want others to experience the pain my family had endured.
So, I did what any self-respecting journalist with a built in bully pulpit would do...I had a colonoscopy on national television. At one point, loopy on anesthesia, I believe I told the world that I had a pretty little colon. I was fortunate to be able to reach a large audience, and colonoscopy screenings increased by 20 percent. Researchers called it "The Couric Effect." I think it's the Katie and Jay effect. There are people I may never meet who are now living healthier lives...with emphasis on LIVING...simply because I helped bring colon cancer out of the closet.
And I was so gratified to be part of a team that helped organize Stand Up 2 Cancer, which raised over 100 million dollars to fund the unsung heroes of this countries...scientists who work day in a day out...without fame or big checks so many more people can live with cancer and not die from it.
There are smaller, quieter ways to serve...that are just as important. I recently interviewed two adorable sisters for a series we're doing called "Children of the Recession." They are nine and five...their parents both lost their jobs and the girls ended up walking the streets and riding the trains of Chicago with their mother. Then an organization called "Safe Families" stepped in and now they're being taken care of by a wonderful couple until their parents can get back on their feet. I met many families who opened their homes and hearts to kids in distress. THAT...is service. So is tutoring a child. Working at a soup kitchen. Driving an elderly neighbor to the grocery store.
Never underestimate the contribution you can make. Its been said: "If you think you are too small to be effective, you have never been in bed with a mosquito."
So give something back. After all, you're graduating from Princeton! You are so lucky. And do me a favor...thank your parents or whoever helped you achieve this goal. Then, transform your gratitude into action...and give back to a world that has already given you so much.
When President Obama announced he was choosing Sonia Sotomayor for the Supreme Court it was a reminder that the American Dream is alive and well...that a young Puerto Rican girl who grew up in a housing project in the Bronx could earn a seat in the highest court in the land. She congratulated the single mother who raised her to be a judge and her brother to be a doctor. Parents, your children, too, can achieve anything because you gave them strong shoulders to stand on and the tools they'll need to succeed. Remind yourselves of this when they ask if they can come home and live with you while they look for work!
But maybe the silver lining of these tough economic times is that it may be the wake up call helps recalibrate our values.
The eighties -- thank GOD -- are long over. Luckily none of you remember them. Gordon Gecko from the movie "Wall Street" was wrong...greed is not good. We can finally burn the bumper sticker that says: "he who dies with the most toys wins." The truth is closer to the old Italian Proverb that says: "At the end of the game, the king and the pawn go back in the same box."
What really matters in the end is how you've played the game of life...that you've lived it with honor, integrity and character... old fashioned qualities that never go out of style...whether you're a fan of Ella Fitzgerald or Lady Gaga.
Finally, take some chances. Get out of your comfort zone, even if that's extremely uncomfortable.
Mark Twain once wrote, "Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do."
When I left the safe confines of NBC News, a friend wrote me a note that said, "Boats are always safe in the harbor. But that's not what boats are built for." So sail away, even if the waters are choppy and the territory uncharted...you'll be amazed at what you learn about the world and about yourself...and through it all, cherish the handful of people you can always depend on to throw you a life preserver when you need it the most. And don't forget to wear sunscreen.
To the Class of 2009...congratulations, safe travels...and good luck. I can't wait to feature you in the future on the CBS Evening News. Thank you.

Worst Gadgets of the Decade- WoWee's Robo-Elvis
More terrifying than a convention of Fat Elvis impersonators (and with less of a target audience than anything possibly sold in the giftshops of Graceland), this herky jerky robotic head was $349 worth of pure nightmare fuel. Especially if you… uh… pulled the skin off its face.

Study: 3 Effortless Ways to Get Higher 401(k) Returns
by Emily Brandon
Wednesday, January 27, 2010
provided by US News & World Report
401(k) participants who use target-date funds, managed accounts, or online advice get better returns on their retirement investments than those who do not, according to a Hewitt Associates and Financial Engines study released Monday. The median annual return for 401(k) account holders using any of these forms of investing assistance was 1.86 percent higher than among investors who choose their own investments with no guidance from their employer, the study of 400,000 401(k) plan participants at 7 companies between 2006 and 2008 found. The improved return takes into account fees paid on the investments.
Retirement savers not receiving investing assistance from their employer tended to take on more risk in their portfolios and failed to shift to more conservative investments as they approached retirement, the study found. About a quarter of the study participants used at least one type of investment advice offered through their 401(k) plan.
“Employers offer workers investment help like target date funds, online advice, and managed accounts because they help participants make smart investment decisions with minimal effort or expertise,” says Pam Hess, director of retirement research at Hewitt. “Simply taking advantage of them can equate to thousands of dollars in additional retirement savings over time.”
The researchers didn’t find statistically significant differences between the three types of investment advice studied. But they did discover that employee preferences for various types of investment help tended to vary by age. “To really help a participant do better they really have to offer multiple forms of help and people can transition to the help they need for that part of their lives,” says Chris Jones, chief investment officer of Financial Engines. Here is who tended to use each type of investment assistance.
Target-date funds. Target-date funds were largely used by younger 401(k) participants with shorter job tenures, lower account balances, and smaller salaries and contribution rates. The typical participant with 95 percent or more of their retirement account balance invested in a target-date fund was 38 years old, had been at their current job about 4 years, and had a 401(k) balance of $6,295, the study found. Target-date funds are a common default investment for companies that automatically sign up their workers for 401(k) plans. “About half of the people in the target-date fund pool were defaulted by their employers,” says Hess.
Managed accounts. Retirement savers who chose managed accounts tended to have the longest job tenure and were the closest to retirement. The average age of workers investing in managed accounts was 49 and they had an account balance of $45,816.
Online advice. The average retirement saver who sought investment information online was 41, had about 9 years of job tenure, and an average balance of $69,057. “As people get older their life circumstances become more complex and that’s where online advice can be helpful because there is a higher degree of personalization,” says Jones.
The study didn’t examine the investment returns of retirement savers who met with a financial adviser in person. “It’s just not cost affective [for employers providing investment advice] to have a sit down with someone who has a $50,000 account,” says Jones.

Troll discussion from somewhere on the interweb
---
Okay, let's talk about Trolls. Why, because we get then on every forum we visit; and they do one thing successfully... Tick everyone off.
I know that many of you have seen and read the "don't feed the trolls" notes from Lynne and I, and there is a reason for why we say it. Just about everyone listens. But, I figured we could open up the topic on what exactly a troll is, why they are on special diets, and why they need to be handled a certain way.
Not because anyone is doing anything wrong, but because, we are all being affected by the current events.
Troll's are instigators.
Keeping that in mind, there are two kinds... The positive troll and the negative troll.
How do I figure? By that definition *I* am a troll. I instigate the conversations that happen, and I instigate you all to think and challenge everyone to the brink of your tempers.
Kinda odd to think of your moderator as a troll isn't it?
The advantage.. I get to be the kind of troll no one minds, every now and again, ya'll might get irritated with me.. but it doesn't last long.
Then we have Nasty Trolls.
We are dealing with a Nasty Troll (or NasTroll) for short. These are the kinds of trolls who stir up trouble.. However, they can sometimes create good topics, just like your friendly Troll. But, this temperment doesn't stick around long, they quickly get ugly, or they just start out ugly.
Dealing with Nastrolls, is a lot like dealing with a tantruming child. The more attention you give to the tantrum.. the longer it lasts, but if you ignore, and walk over said screaming meemee, it is a short lived process.
Hence the special diet.
So... Now, that I've opened this can of worms... Let's talk trolls.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Well first off, I love our GOOD instigating Troll here, not once have I been disipointed in her instigation of some pretty interesting topics I hope she never stops instigating
And bad Trolls, well I find their posts are kind of like a car crash. You know you shouldn't look ( or reply), but you just can't not do so , you have to see whats going on( you gotta get that dig in). The temptation to reply, even though you know you shouldn't, is immense. They make you wonder how pathetic they must be to have to result to taunting with their keyboards. Most of the time the bad Troll makes me shake my head and laugh, of course I have never been directly targeted by a Troll, but I would imagine that would piss me off, which wold be the Trolls goal wouldn't it?
What I don't understand is why. Why would you come to a place such as this, to intentionaly start trouble? What does a Troll gain out of it? It's the Internet, it's not like we sit around and worry about what the Troll did today. We log off and move on. What kind of a person feels the need to stir up trouble on the Internet? What are they lacking in their life to make them need such odd attention from people they don't even know
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It's attention.
Think of kids... even negative attention is attention.
Then of course there can be an entire psychological thing too, and not just the mental health of those who wind up exasperated by them.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I don't know how much I can add, but here are a few interesting things I know...
Trolls/trolling and it's effects, especially regarding legal ramifications, has been debated in courts, all the way up to the US Supreme Court (eBay v MercExchange).
Some groups troll for newbletts by posting a topic that's been done to death to see who responds. A great example here would be a graffiti thread...
Trolls have absolutely no morals regarding honesty; today it might be a 25 year old, heavily tattoo'd male, tomorrow the same troll (with a different name) might be a 16 year old, suicidal girl, next week it might be a 70 year old grandmother. Some trolls can change the way they talk, so you can't tell it's the same person by the writing style. A few really successful trolls can even hold arguments with themselves (under two or more names) to get other users into the battle. We have seen all of these tactics on this board before...
Trolls have many motivations, but the three most common are revenge, to hide an identity, and for the art.
Examples: Revenge could be an ex-board member who was kicked off, and keeps coming back to stir up trouble to "get back" at the mods. Hiding an identity could be a user who wants to "keep an eye" on the people of the board without letting them know who they are (often law enforcement). They will stir up trouble using multiple names to pull the heat off of themselves... Finally, some people just see trolling as art, and do it because they are bored. Often, at the end of a troll they will post "YHBT YHL HAND" or "You Have Been Trolled, You Have Lost, Have A Nice Day". These are the most obnoxious...
Most importantly: Do Not Feed The Trolls! This means, do not play into their game, don't respond, don't get angry, don't PM them. Just ignore them. They will go away if you ignore them, but if you feed them they only get stronger. Usually the mods lock all the troll posts before they get too far, but if everyone would just not respond it would be more effective. Don't even respond to a non-troll post from a known troll; this will just encourage them.
Finally there is cyberstalking. This is only applicable to a troll who keeps coming back over and over again. Under both US and UK law, online stalking is covered under normal stalking laws, and is punishable the same way. Stalking includes repeated following and unwanted contact, both of which apply to a troll. The law in the US varies by state, but in all but the weakest cases leads to at least 5 years prison time. In the UK, the law is stricter, as once it has been reported to the authorities, they become liable for any damage caused due to their inaction. In Canada it can carry a term of up to 10 years. In all of these countries, as well as in many others, it is an offense that can lead to extradition if committed across country borders (for instance, someone in the UK cyberstalking a US server. HINT HINT). It is very easy to prove cyberstalking; every computer connected to the internet leaves a long digital trail of everything that it has done.
Why am I talking about cyberstalking? Because one of our trolls has legally crossed into cyberstalking territory, and Motts could push for the law to be enforced. In addition, a few of the other members here (myself included) could also push for it to be enforced, as this troll has digitally followed us to our personal sites and left harrassing messages as well. Ideally, said troll will read this, decide the risk isn't worth it, and go away. If not... well, I don't know if Motts would push for extradition, but you damned well better believe I will. HINT HINT.
Ok, so that's trolling 101...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Having been targetted by a troll I can say it is not a nice experience.
Having someone stalk you online, send abusive emails and fool you into believing they are someone else is disturbing...
The particular trolls we get here are often short lived, but we do have the odd troll that insists on coming back again and again. Said troll clerly enjoys the frustration and tension that he causes, and it makes you wonder what the hell is going on in their real life to make them so desperate to ruin other peoples, whether it be by annoying them endlessly online or emailing them privately.
I know we shouldn't rise to the bait but sometimes you just want to vent and tell these freaks how weird they really are, how disturbed and unsatisfied their lives are.
I know we will never be totaly free of trolls, and we do have a few stalking the board at the moment.
I would also push for prosecution of a cyberstalker...purely because I don't think that these people will ever stop.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And you said you did't have much to add Sketch... our little bundle of knowledge. Actually your post was very enlightening.
It is intereting to see the reasoning behind certain types of Trolls. Something I would never have given any thought to, aside from a disguntled Troll, or law enforcement. But to Troll for newbies, or just for the fun of it... that is just weird to me.
Also it is interesting to know how serious of an offense Trolling can be. It makes sense that when it crosses the line into stalking it should be punishd the same way. It still all seems so strange to me that someone would put so much time and effort into this, you don't know these people personaly, you can't "see" their reactions, it seems like such a waste of time.
Question - say a sexual predator was on the Internet looking for a victim, is that deemed Trolling or is it out and out stalking, or is it considered something else entirely? Reason I ask is I am curious as to what type of a sentence someone would receive for meeting up with someone that way with the intent to do harm. If it was considered Trolling then these scum bags would be getting away with mild sentences wouldn't they?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm glad we have covered all of this.
As a person, I have dealt with cyber stalkers, who escalated to real stalking.. (talk about scary) and trolls.
As a moderator, I deal with them on more than just this site.
The reality is... they are scary, disturbing and well.... because people are unaware of the laws... They get away with it.
Our current stalker/troll included. I'm really hoping that by maybe helping to educate users on the laws, we can begin to work together to help eliminate the problem. While everyone is right, the reality is..We'll never be done dealing with them, but if we deal with them in a proactive manner, rather than a reactive manner, we may actually get somewhere as a whole.

5 Behaviors of Manipulative People

Many of us like to think the best of people. We like to think that they shoot straight and are forthright in their intentions. We also like to believe that they will ask for what they want and not resort to crazy tactics to get it.
Unfortunately, however, there are times when we come across those who will do whatever it takes to get what they want…including manipulation. Being manipulated never feels good, but the worst part of manipulation is that often, we don’t even realize that it is happening. Here are a few ways to know if someone is trying to manipulate you:
1. Buttering You Up: To get their way, manipulators will often make you feel good so that they can then ask you to do something that they want. The person may first compliment you or tell you what a wonderful job you did on something. Making you feel good will, in their mind, make it difficult for you to say no…after all, you wouldn’t want to disappoint them or give them reason to think you didn’t deserve the compliment in the first place.
What you can do: Return the compliments and the niceties before saying no.
2. Guilt: This doesn’t only pertain to Catholics and Jewish Mothers; guilt trips have been a successful manipulation tactic for centuries. The saddest part of this strategy is that the victims of this tactic succumb to the manipulators’ demands because they feel they HAVE to, not because they WANT to. In personal relationships, this sets up a co-dependency that is extremely unhealthy.
What you can do: Ask the individual if they want you to do something because you have to or because you want to. If they say they want you to want to do it, tell them that you don’t and that they are trying to force you into something you don’t feel comfortable with.
3. Broken Record: Probably the most obvious of formats is the broken record tactic. If a person asks you enough or pushes their agenda enough... constantly repeating the question or request over and over again…in slightly different ways, the victim will inevitably give in and give them what they want. Oye!
What you can do: Ask the individual what they don’t understand about the word “no.” Tell them that asking you over and over again isn’t going to change anything and that they are inappropriately over-stepping boundaries.
4. Selective Memory: This one gets me the most. You swear you have a conversation about a plan and everyone is on the same page, and then one day, the manipulator pretends to remember the conversation completely differently, if at all.
What you can do: Record your conversations...seriously! Okay, maybe not. At least have a witness that you can count on to back you up if the person pulls this shenanigan. Call them out on the fact that they conveniently change the game to fit their needs.
5. Bullying: If a person doesn’t get their way, they make you out to look or feel like the bad guy…like you are the wrong one.
What you can do: Be firm and tell them that their bullying tactics are inappropriate and unacceptable.
Keep your eyes open for these behaviors and continue to stand your ground to ensure that you aren’t a victim of manipulation. Have you seen any other types of manipulative behavior?

Venture Fund Uses Lottery Model
Carmen Nobel
11/20/09 - 05:00 AM EST
BOSTON (TheStreet) -- At first blush, the business model of new investment firm Revolutionary Angels appears like a lottery. All it takes is $5,000 and a dream.
Based in the innovation hotbed of Cambridge, Mass., the firm, launched last month, has a pay-to-play plan that works like this: As many as 100 startups each pay $5,000 to compete for a maximum $250,000 initial round of funding. The runner-up gets $50,000. The rest get feedback.
"This does not seem kosher," says Emily Mendell, vice president of the National Venture Capital Association, in an e-mail message, upon hearing about the firm. "Real angels would never do this."
Founder and Chief Executive Officer Chris Hurley says Revolutionary Angels offers novice entrepreneurs a shot at financing as well as advisory services at a time when they're hard-pressed to find funding through traditional routes.
"If you're a first-time entrepreneur or an early-stage company, there are a lot of challenges to get investments," says Hurley, who previously worked in corporate development at Sun Microsystems(JAVA Quote). "You can spend a lot of time chasing your tail, and with an early-stage company, time is money."
No argument there. For starters, even bank loans are hard to come by, thanks, in part, to the downfall of CIT Group(CITGQ Quote). And while total venture funding increased 17% to $4.8 billion in the third quarter from a year earlier, first-time financing fell 20% to $633 million, according to the quarterly MoneyTree Report from PricewaterhouseCoopers and the NVCA. That's the least amount for first-time deals in the survey's history.
"What we really want to see are people we've made money with before or co-invested with before," says Michael Greeley, a founder and general partner at Flybridge Capital Partners in Boston and chairman of the New England Venture Capital Association.
Meanwhile, angel investors -- rich individuals who provide capital for needy companies -- have doled out less in the seed and startup stages, according to the Center for Venture Research at the University of New Hampshire. Only 27% of angel investments went to companies in the newbie stage in the first half of 2009, compared with 46% in the same period a year earlier, when the world was more risk-prone.
"At least lately, investors are looking for entrepreneurs that already have some product or a customer," Hurley says.
Revolutionary Angels, on the other hand, can afford to seek out companies that don't yet have anything more than a business plan and a dream. The financial risk -- $5,000 -- lies with the applicants. He notes, though, that he isn't taking a salary. "If we do reach 100 companies, what we'll do with the remaining funding is build out our support infrastructure to continue to offer this program."
Every company that applies for funding will receive written feedback on the business plan, he adds, along with connections to and discounted services from the firm's business partners, which include the BizSpark program from Microsoft(MSFT Quote), email marketing tool company Constant Contact(CTCT Quote), as well as local accounting and law firms.
Hurley says entrepreneurs pay a fee of $18,500 to participate in DEMO, the semi-annual highly publicized pitch-fest that has launched companies such as Palm(PALM Quote), Symantec(SYMC Quote), Salesforce.com(CRM Quote), Tivo(TIVO Quote) and E-Trade(ETFC Quote).
"I wouldn't push the analogy too hard," says Flybridge's Greeley. "With DEMO you're getting in front of a couple hundred investors and media. What Chris is offering is advice, guidance and the chance to see one set of investors, which is him."

S&P: Potential Upgrades Rise To 187; Junk Potential Also Up
Last update: 11/10/2009 6:55:46 AM
DOW JONES NEWSWIRES
The number of companies poised for credit ratings upgrades rose by 13 this past month to 187 and exceeded the trailing 12-month average for the first time in nearly two years, according to Standard & Poor's Ratings Services.
But the number of companies either with positive ratings outlooks or on watch for upgrade was 58 less than the year-earlier level.
Upgrades have become more prevalent in recent months, with only one fewer U.S. nonfinancial company last month seeing their rating raised than cut in October, a marked change from the past year as credit-quality issues continue to stabilize.
Still, the number of companies poised to fall into junk territory rose by two the past month to 72. They have a combined $196.37 billion in debt.
Of the so-called potential fallen angels, SLM Corp. (SLM) - with $34.02 in rated debt - is the largest in the group.
Banks have the most potential fallen angels at 16, followed by consumer products at nine, and the metals, mining and steel sector at seven.
The number of companies downgraded to speculative grade from investment grade remained at 67. The largest of them was CIT Group Inc. (CITGQ) with $38.19 billion in rated debt. It filed for bankruptcy protection.
The finance sector continues to have the most fallen angels this year, with 12, followed by banks at nine and utilities at eight.

SPAM loses trademark case
The maker of spiced ham food product SPAM has failed in its attempt to register the word as a trademark for junk email.
Thu, 5 Oct 2006
The maker of spiced ham food product SPAM has failed in its attempt to register the word as a trademark for junk email.
Hormel Foods took its legal battle to the EU trademark body, the Office of Harmonisation for the Internal Market (OHIM), claiming most people thought of its meat product when hearing the word spam, rather than associating it with junk email.
It argued that its trademark should be extended across the EU to apply to unsolicited emails.
However the OHIM turned down the appeal, saying that people buying software to beat spam would not confuse these with the meat product.
The OHIM ruling said: "The most evident meaning of the term SPAM for the consumers of the services at issue will certainly be 'unsolicited usually commercial email sent to a large number of addressees' rather than a designation for canned spicy ham.”

Life imitates the Simpsons: a 10 year old New York girl has been fined $50 for operating a lemonade stand without a license.
Clementine Lee set up a lemonade stand in Riverside Park, New York Saturday as a way to raise some pocket money, but that was before not one, but three city officials pounced on her illegal operation.
“I was kind of nervous, and I also really felt bad because I didn’t know I was doing something against the law,” Clementine told local media. “They made me feel really, really bad, and scared at the same time,” Clemetine said. “We could have gotten into really big trouble and gotten arrested or something.”
A spokesperson for the New York Parks Department says that the three agents “showed poor judgment” (you think so?) and that the ticket will be dismissed.
For the record, Clementine had managed to sell $19 worth of lemonade before being slapped with the $50 fine.

Nasdaq OMX launches direct options data feed
Source: Nasdaq OMX, 11 August 2009
The Nasdaq OMX Group, (Nasdaq:NDAQ) today introduced Top of PHLX Options (TOPO), a low latency options data feed that provides direct access to data from Nasdaq OMX PHLX (PHLX).
TOPO offers recipients the same information PHLX provides to the Options Price Reporting Authority (OPRA) for inclusion in the consolidated market feed, without extra transmission and processing latencies.
As the third-largest U.S. options exchange, PHLX trades more than 2,600 equity options, sector index options and U.S. dollar-settled options on major currencies. PHLX offers a combination of cutting-edge electronic and floor-based options trading on NASDAQ's high-speed, highly-reliable INET technology.
TOPO was created in conjunction with the launch of PHLX's enhanced trading platform, which is based on the INET architecture.
"Top of PHLX Options enables subscribers to have the most immediate access to information from PHLX," said Randall Hopkins, Senior Vice President, NASDAQ OMX Global Data Products. "In addition to removing extra hops and latency in receiving this data, TOPO users also benefit from the increased capacity and performance within the new trading system itself."
TOPO is available to trading firms, market data vendors and individual investors and can be accessed directly from NASDAQ OMX or through authorized NASDAQ OMX extranets and market data distributors.
"This is just like 19xx" Oh yea?
