"Twitter is Gay"
Kid Rock's Talks Stadium Spectaculars, Confirms Gayness of Twitter
July 31, 2009 9:50 AM
We caught up with Kid Rock yesterday, who told us that wherever he goes, people are screaming "Twitter is gay"!!!
If you have no idea what we're talking about, here's the story: In the last issue of Rolling Stone -- with MJ on the cover --- we did a Q+A with Kid, in which we discussed his huge summer tour, and his two humongous gigs at Detroit's Comerica Park.
We were (and still are) highly annoyed by the Twittering phenomenon. We think Twittering is retarded.
When we asked Kid Rock about it, he summed it up perfectly. "Twitter's fucking gay," he said. We're so glad to hear that the word is spreading, and random folks are screaming that at him.
Moving on...
Yesterday, Rock told us about his gigs at Comerica, during which he pulled out all the stops to celebrate his hometown. "There was a classic car show," he says. "And I'd peek out the wiindow in my bus and see motorcycle jumpin' off ramps. For the weekend it looked like Detroit was a thriving city. People were downtown, there was all sorts of horseshit going on. It was great! It felt bigger than me, and I really believe it was.
Rock killed the crowds with a hit parade, and threw in a few special numbers. Near the top of the set was a cover of the Stone's "Tumblin' Dice." "I'd never done it before," he says. "I just wanted wanted to learn those crazy fuckin' lyrics."
Closing the show was "Born In the U.S.A." "The chorus of that song and the situation down in Detroit... it took on another meeting," he says. "As tough as times are, we're still very fortunate to live in the greatest country on earth. I thought it gave everyone a sense of hope. And, you know, we did a much heavier version, and turned it up to fifteen. We had fireworks going off. But it's all about the song."
But the show-stopper was the debut of Kid's new tune, "In Times Like These." The hard-hitting social commentary is an ode to Detroit, and as images flashed behind the stage of the highs and lows of Motor City, many in the crowd got choked up. "It was really emotional," he says. "My son was out by the soundboard, and he told me that people were crying."
The events also marked the first time Kid Rock's new Badass Beer was consumed by the public. "All the reactions have been good. People say it doesn't have any aftertaste and it's refreshing. The whole Budweiser thing is 'Drinkability,' but my whole thing is 'Slamability.'"
Rock adds, "Twitter's still gay."

I am a collector too!
My name is Eric Drum, owner and operator of Collectible Stocks and Bonds.
I started collecting old certificates in 1991. Originally a paper money collector, I found stocks and bonds to provide more historical interest.
They also look neater!
HOW CSB STARTED
I started Collectible Stocks and Bonds in 1993 by selling railroad certificates at train shows in the Midwest (when I lived in Omaha, then Toledo). Always the computer geek, I tied my interests in stocks to a new thing called the internet and started selling online in 1994. Later (1996), I came up with this website, www.oldstocks.com. Several evolutions and revisions later, you have the website that you are navigating today.
This is a home-based business to support my own habit of collecting as well as inspiring me to leaving my real job one day. I live just outside of Richmond, VA in historic Hanover County. My wife puts up with the piles of stocks but there aren't any outside of my home office or my cube at work.
WHAT WE SELL
Collectible Stocks and Bonds serves both novice and advanced collectors. We focus on affordable, novelty pieces but offer a few highly desirable collectors items when we can find them. Our categories include popular railroads, automotive companies, and general industry.

Revlon, Trump and the U.S. Basketball League are the most recent companies to announce they’re moving away from paper certificates. With more companies turning to electronic tracking, it’s the beginning of the end for stock certificates.
Historically, stock certificates were traded to signify ownership in publicly traded companies, but paperless alternatives have been considered for years as a way to lower costs. Now, recent legislation has opened the floodgates on this new trend. Irreplaceable certificates -- with their unique artwork and designs -- are gradually being eliminated.
Over the next year, most major companies will either start charging overhead fees for certificates or abandon them completely. Now’s the time to act if you want a real, tangible symbol of your commitment to a company. Created from hand-etched cold press printing plates by artisan craftsmen, stock certificates are historic documents that’ll only grow in desirability. Individually-numbered and emblazoned with the shareholder’s name, each is one-of-a-kind.

Antisocial Networks: Turning a Social Network into a Botnet
E. Athanasopoulos, A. Makridakis, S. Antonatos1, D. Antoniades,
S. Ioannidis, K. G. Anagnostakis, E. P. Markatos
Abstract.
Antisocial Networks are distributed systems based on social
networking Web sites that can be exploited by attackers, and directed to
carry out network attacks. Malicious users are able to take control of the
visitors of social sites by remotely manipulating their browsers through
legitimate Web control functionality such as image-loading HTML tags,
JavaScript instructions, etc. In this paper we experimentally show that
Social Network web sites have the ideal properties to become attack
platforms.
We start by identifying all the properties of Facebook, a real-world So-
cial Network, and then study how we can utilize these properties and
transform it into an attack platform against any host connected to the
Internet. Towards this end, we developed a real-world Facebook appli-
cation that can perform malicious actions covertly. We experimentally
measured it’s impact by studying how innocent Facebook users can be
manipulated into carrying out a Denial-of-Service attack. Finally, we ex-
plored other possible misuses of Facebook and how they can be applied
to other online Social Network web sites.
1 Introduction
The massive adoption of social networks by Internet users provides us with a
unique opportunity to study possible exploits that will turn them into platforms
for antisocial and illegal activities, like DDoS attacks, malware propagation,
spamming, privacy violations, etc. We define antisocial networks as a social net-
work, deviously manipulated for launching activities connected with fraud and
cyber-crime.
Social networks have by nature some intrinsic properties that make them
ideal to be exploited by an adversary. The most important of these properties
are: (i) a very large and highly distributed user-base, (ii) clusters of users sharing
the same social interests, developing trust with each other, and seeking access
to the same resources, and (iii) platform openness for deploying fraud resources
and applications that lure users to install them. All these characteristics give
adversaries the opportunity to manipulate massive crowds of Internet users and
force them to commit antisocial acts against the rest of the Internet, without
their knowledge. In this paper we explore these properties, develop a real exploit,
and analyze its impact.
The main contributions of this paper is a first investigation into the potential
misuse of a social network for launching DDoS attacks on third parties. We have
built an actual Facebook application, that can turn its users into a FaceBot. We
used our FaceBot to carry out a complete evaluation of our proof-of-concept at-
tack via real-world experiments. Extrapolating from these measurements along
with popularity metrics of current Facebook applications, we show that own-
ers of popular Facebook applications have a highly distributed platform with
significant attack firepower under their control.

Using the Lottery Effect to Make People Save
by Jason Zweig
Monday, July 20, 2009
WSJ
Based on recent headlines, you might think that Americans are finally saving again. Want to bet?
In 2007, the latest year for which final numbers are available, Americans spent $92.3 billion on legalized gambling, according to Christiansen Capital Advisors; that same year, says the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, Americans saved only $57.4 billion.
So, if Americans are to save more, maybe we should make saving feel more exciting than just a dull deposit into a bank account.
The BEA recently estimated that personal saving -- what is left of Americans' disposable income after all our spending -- has risen to a 6.9% annual rate. Starting in the late 1980s, the personal-saving rate began to fall from the 8%-to-10% range. By 2005, households were spending 99.6 cents of every dollar they earned. Now, however, frightened by foreclosures and menaced by rising unemployment, Americans are saving almost as much as they used to.
Or are they?
Charles Biderman of TrimTabs Investment Research, an economic-analysis firm in Sausalito, Calif., has studied the saving rate for years. He adjusted for one-time boosts from the stimulus package and used daily income-tax reports from the U.S. Treasury to take the latest job losses into account. By this revised estimate, the saving rate may actually be running as low as 0.9%. (People who have been thrown out of work often can't save.) A BEA spokesman declined to dispute Mr. Biderman's adjustments, saying only "TrimTabs has a different method of calculating."
It makes sense that the saving rate might be lower than it looks; spendthrifts don't turn into misers overnight. But we would be better off as an economy and as a society if Americans spent less and saved more.
The late, great investment manager Sir John Templeton warned me 20 years ago: "Those who spend too much will eventually be owned by those who are thrifty." If you wonder how China, Japan, Hong Kong and Taiwan ended up amassing $1.65 trillion in U.S. Treasury bonds, the answer lies largely in our own credit-card bills.
Today, credit cards and online shopping make deferring gratification harder than Ben Franklin ever could have imagined. And Americans are in hock up to their ears, with $10.5 trillion in mortgages and another $2.6 trillion in consumer credit. It isn't any wonder that saving feels impossible to many people.
But psychologists have long known that people tend to overestimate the odds of rare events. Applying that behavioral insight, finance professor Peter Tufano of Harvard Business School has devised a clever program called "Save to Win." Launched earlier this year for members of eight credit unions in Michigan, it is a cross between a certificate of deposit and a raffle ticket. Members who put $25 or more into a Save to Win one-year CD are entered into a monthly "savings raffle" for prizes up to $400, plus one annual drawing for a $100,000 jackpot. Only Michigan residents are eligible to participate.
This unusual CD is federally guaranteed by the National Credit Union Administration and pays between 1% and 1.5% annual interest, a bit lower than conventional rates. In 25 weeks, the program has attracted about $3.1 million in new deposits, often from people who have never been able to set money aside.
Takisha Turner, 33 years old, is a dispatcher for the valet-parking department at Greektown Casino in Detroit. Ms. Turner doesn't gamble, but she has always struggled to save. She had only about $10 in her savings account at Communicating Arts Credit Union when she walked in a few weeks ago and heard about Save to Win.
"The teller said somebody else she told about it won," says Ms. Turner, "so I said, 'Well, you must be good luck then.' I thought it was a good idea, because earning interest means you win anyway. So I put down the minimum, $25." This past week, Ms. Turner won $400. She plowed the $400 back into her Save to Win account, getting a second shot at winning the $100,000 grand prize.
People love to gamble and hate to save. With Save to Win, says Communicating Arts Credit Union President Hank Hubbard, "You are sort of betting, but there's no losing." If we are to become a nation of savers again, we will need more innovations like this -- and the regulatory flexibility to allow them.

Secret Google Presentation Defends Invasive Behavioral Ads

Consumer Watchdog Releases Satirical Annotated Version, Says Cyber-Spying Should Raise Lawmaker Alarms Over Internet Giant’s New ‘Net-based Operating System
Washington, D.C. -- Online search giant Google, already under fire for its privacy policies and a self-serving online book publication deal, is now apparently trying to persuade Capitol Hill policymakers that its so-called behavioral advertising, which targets users based on their browsing--is benign, said Consumer Watchdog. The nonpartisan, nonprofit advocacy group has obtained a “confidential” and “proprietary” Google presentation for lawmakers that, ironically, touts Google’s commitment to “transparency,” but skirts tough questions about its secretive user data tracking, storage and sharing policies.
Google increasingly spies on what consumers do online, including what web sites they visit; creates dossiers on users’ online behavior without their prior permission; then harvests this private information to sell hundreds of millions of dollars in advertising, said Consumer Watchdog.
Consumer Watchdog posted the presentation along with an annotated version, prepared by an industry insider, that calls out Google’s deceptions. The group urged lawmakers and the Justice Department to view both versions and consider strict limits on how Google collects and uses its customers’ online behavior.

The privacy question has grown more urgent with Google’s announcement Wednesday that it will release a new operating system that moves currently computer-based functions to its proprietary Internet “cloud,” said Consumer Watchdog. Congress is considering forcing Google to adopt an opt-in model where users must actively allow Google to collect or share browsing history and user data.
“The Justice Department should be worried when Google tries to obfuscate its data tracking capacity and reach rather than disclose all of it,” said Judy Dugan, research director of Consumer Watchdog. “Congress should demand that Google stop tracking Americans’ online behavior without their prior permission. Whatever Google does will quickly become the industry standard.”
The annotated version of the presentation notes that Google’s strangely labeled path to opting out of this invasive advertising is hidden beneath “layers of privacy policies,” that it takes seven clicks to install a permanent opt-out, and that watching all 38 of Google’s videos explaining its dense privacy policies takes 3.8 hours, nearly as long as Gone With the Wind.
The Google presentation boasts of the company’s commitment to transparency in developing what it blandly calls “targeted advertising,” which shows ads to users based on the content of sites and videos the user has viewed over time. Yet, in a Big Brother moment, it made its case in a “confidential” and “proprietary” document, said Consumer Watchdog.
Google’s new operating system could also comb users’ stored documents for information on what the company calls “interest categories.” The depth of this potential data collection is not mentioned in the Google spin document, said Consumer Watchdog.
The document was provided to Consumer Watchdog by an anonymous industry insider familiar with Google's lobbying who has provided other Google spin documents.
(Click here to see a previous document on Google's attempt to minimize its industry dominance, and accompanying news release. )
The Google presentation appears to be associated with a June 18 Congressional hearing that questioned online “behavioral advertising.” Consumer Watchdog has previously asked the Justice Department to investigate Google’s privacy policies.
“Google should stop dodging, ducking and weaving when it comes to squaring its do-no-evil pledge with its cyber-spying and ‘confidential’ memos, said Dugan. “The company could eliminate all privacy doubts with a simple page-one button allowing users to affirmatively allow the company to track their personal online habits. Google’s refusal to do so appears to confirm that evading user privacy is essential to its business model.”
The annotated version of the Google presentation ends with these key questions for which Congress should demand answers:
1. Why isn’t Google’s behavioral advertising opt-in rather than opt-out?
2. Why not prominently include a link allowing users to permanently opt-out of Google tracking?
3. 2008: Google says it has no plans to use behavioral advertising… [that] it doesn’t work. What changed?
4. Is Google’s behavioral advertising really about delivering more interesting ads or is it about expanding its data collection and targeting activities?
5. And just for fun…

Boston Options Exchange Latest To Eliminate ETF-Trade Fees
Last update: 6/23/2009 4:56:23 PM
By Tennille Tracy
Of DOW JONES NEWSWIRES
NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--The Boston Options Exchange has decided to eliminate fees for trades involving three exchange-traded funds, hoping to attract more investors who want to buy and sell options on these products.
The Boston exchange, also known as BOX, represents the latest exchange to take steps to woo investors who trade these popular products, which have started to drive a huge amount of activity in the options market.
"This was targeted to improve customer volumes," said BOX Vice Chairman William Easley. "It's the main place we felt we were at a disadvantage.
But while the Boston exchange looks to cut fees, Nasdaq OMX Group (NDAQ) has decided to assess a new charge after several months in which it maintained a fee-free policy for popular options. These developments highlight the challenges of finding balance in a market has grown at a lightning speed in recent years.
The three ETFs on which the Boston exchange has eliminated so-called taker fees are the SPDR Trust Series I (SPY), the PowerShares QQQ Trust (QQQQ) and the iShares Russell 2000 Index Fund (IWM).
Collectively, these three funds fueled 16% of the option market's volume between January and the end of May, according to the Options Clearing Corp.
The Boston exchange's new fee policy goes into effect July 1. It follows a move in May by the International Securities Exchange to eliminate customer transaction fees for options on ETFs that were listed on multiple exchanges, as well as indexes.
In addition to the SPY and IWM, which the Boston exchange targeted, the action taken by the International Securities Exchange also covered the Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLF), a hugely popular fund that tracks financial companies.
"This is a competitive move for us," said an ISE spokeswoman.
The ISE first adopted its so-called premium product fee in 2005, attempting to offset the costs of litigation associated with listing the products in the first place. The exchange never charged fees on the PowerShares QQQ Trust.
Until now, the Boston exchange charged a 30-cent taker fee to customers who "took" liquidity from the market - often retail and institutional investors, as opposed to market makers. In other words, an investor who wanted to buy 1,000 options contracts - conveying the right to buy or sell 100,000 shares of stock - could have incurred a $300 taker fee.
Several months ago, Nasdaq OMX elected not to charge taker fees to investors conducting trades on its Nasdaq Options Market exchange. Now, however, it is looking to assess a 20-cent taker fee for customers who buy and sell options that trade in penny increments. These types of options are among the most popular and liquid contracts, and should generate revenue for the exchange.
"We're continually trying to find the right pricing mechanism," said Thomas Wittman, president of Nasdaq OMX PHLX. "You can't continue to charge zero forever.
Pending approval from the U.S. Securities & Exchange Commission, Nasdaq is looking to adopt the new fees on July 1.
Despite these moves, the fees assessed by Nasdaq OMX will, in most cases, still be lower than those charged by the Boston Exchange.

Dallas County Web site displays most wanted ticket offenders
12:00 AM CDT on Friday, June 5, 2009
By KEVIN KRAUSE / The Dallas Morning News
kkrause@dallasnews.com
Joel Israel Green is Dallas County's most wanted ticket-dodger.
And he's now getting a moment of fame – or rather infamy – on one of the county's Web sites.
Green, 28, of DeSoto tops the county's list of scofflaws, owing $21,596.90 in unpaid fines and fees. Green's jail mug shot is displayed prominently on the county's most wanted site that ranks the 50 worst offenders.
Dallas County has a well-known problem collecting delinquent fines. About $200 million is owed.
So it set up a Web site called Dallas County Wanted – http://www.dallascounty.org/dcwantedsearch – where users can find comprehensive information about ticket violators, and even look up their own traffic delinquencies.
The county also wants to use driver's license photos to shame other scofflaws (who don't already have jail mugs) into paying. However, the state isn't sure it can provide the photos for that purpose.
Last month, Lamar Beckworth, director of the Texas Department of Public Safety, wrote Attorney General Greg Abbott, asking him to find whether posting such photos violates state and federal law.
Apparently there is a state law saying driver's license photos can only be released to police or criminal justice agencies for "an official purpose."
"Once it has received the driver license photographs, Dallas County has indicated that it believes it has the discretion to disclose this information in any manner, including a public Web site," Beckworth said.
For now, the mugs shots remain. The site says any information about those on the wanted list should be given to the Dallas County sheriff's office or local police.

TRIZ - What Is TRIZ?
By Katie Barry, Ellen Domb and Michael S. Slocum
Projects of all kinds frequently reach a point where all the analysis is done, and the next step is unclear. The project team must be creative, to figure out what to do. Common creativity tools have been limited to brainstorming and related methods, which depend on intuition, fiat and the knowledge of the members of the team. These methods are typically described as psychologically based and having unpredictable and unrepeatable results.
TRIZ is a problem solving method based on logic and data, not intuition, which accelerates the project team's ability to solve these problems creatively. TRIZ also provides repeatability, predictability, and reliability due to its structure and algorithmic approach. "TRIZ" is the (Russian) acronym for the "Theory of Inventive Problem Solving." G.S. Altshuller and his colleagues in the former U.S.S.R. developed the method between 1946 and 1985. TRIZ is an international science of creativity that relies on the study of the patterns of problems and solutions, not on the spontaneous and intuitive creativity of individuals or groups. More than three million patents have been analyzed to discover the patterns that predict breakthrough solutions to problems.
TRIZ is spreading into corporate use across several parallel paths – it is increasingly common in Six Sigma processes, in project management and risk management systems, and in organizational innovation initiatives....

This is a very good article, but iHub CPA formatted it badly
By Gennady Retseptor
Were people who lived in Antiquity and Medieval times familiar with the 40 inventive principles of TRIZ? Having studied famous Latin phrases, quotes and proverbs, the answer appears to be positive. The 40 inventive principles, discovered by Genrich Altshuller and his colleagues as patterns for technical problems solution, also represent fundamental and universal principles of human wisdom and creativity.5

C. Increase the degree of fragmentation or segmentation.
De minimis – With respect to trifles.
D. Transition to micro-level.
Natura in minima maxima – Nature is the greatest in the smallest things.
Principle 2. Taking Out (Separation, Isolation)

Example of Making Posts Personal
From IhubWiki
Many Users have difficulty understanding how to refute information without attacking the person. Here's an example:
Message: That house is blue.
Reply: What are you frigging color blind?!?! You didn't pass "colors" in Kindergarten? That house is obviously green.
This is a personal attack and should be removed.
--------
Reply: Hmmmm, are you an artist? Are you a painter? Do you work at Sherwin Williams? Could you share with us what your expertise and qualifications are in determining various colors because I thought the house was green?
This is focusing on the other User and should be removed.
--------
Reply: Some people here obviously have an agenda. Imagine what idiots they must think we are to try and state that a house that is clearly green is blue...Geesh, the lengths some people will go to.
This is focusing on the other User and should be removed.
--------
Reply: Interesting - the house looks green to me.
This is focusing on and disagreeing with the information and should remain.
--------
Here's a post with an even more detailed explanation:

Irish student hoaxes world's media with fake quote
Irish student hoaxes world's media with florid but phony quote from dead French composer
Shawn Pogatchnik, Associated Press Writer
On Monday May 11, 2009, 12:07 pm EDT
DUBLIN (AP) -- When Dublin university student Shane Fitzgerald posted a poetic but phony quote on Wikipedia, he was testing how our globalized, increasingly Internet-dependent media was upholding accuracy and accountability in an age of instant news.
His report card: Wikipedia passed. Journalism flunked.
The sociology major's obituary-friendly quote -- which he added to the Wikipedia page of Maurice Jarre hours after the French composer's death March 28 -- flew straight on to dozens of U.S. blogs and newspaper Web sites in Britain, Australia and India. They used the fabricated material, Fitzgerald said, even though administrators at the free online encyclopedia twice caught the quote's lack of attribution and removed it.
A full month went by and nobody noticed the editorial fraud. So Fitzgerald told several media outlets they'd swallowed his baloney whole.
"I was really shocked at the results from the experiment," Fitzgerald, 22, said Monday in an interview a week after one newspaper at fault, The Guardian of Britain, became the first to admit its obituarist lifted material straight from Wikipedia.
"I am 100 percent convinced that if I hadn't come forward, that quote would have gone down in history as something Maurice Jarre said, instead of something I made up," he said. "It would have become another example where, once anything is printed enough times in the media without challenge, it becomes fact."
So far, The Guardian is the only publication to make a public mea culpa, while others have eliminated or amended their online obituaries without any reference to the original version -- or in a few cases, still are citing Fitzgerald's florid prose weeks after he pointed out its true origin.
"One could say my life itself has been one long soundtrack," Fitzgerald's fake Jarre quote read. "Music was my life, music brought me to life, and music is how I will be remembered long after I leave this life. When I die there will be a final waltz playing in my head that only I can hear."
Fitzgerald said one of his University College Dublin classes was exploring how quickly information was transmitted around the globe. His private concern was that, under pressure to produce news instantly, media outlets were increasingly relying on Internet sources -- none more ubiquitous than the publicly edited Wikipedia.
When he saw British 24-hour news channels reporting the death of the triple Oscar-winning composer, Fitzgerald sensed what he called "a golden opportunity" for an experiment on media use of Wikipedia.
He said it took him less than 15 minutes to fabricate and place a quote calculated to appeal to obituary writers without distorting Jarre's actual life experiences. He noted that the Wikipedia listing on Jarre did not have any other strong quotes.
If anything, Fitzgerald said, he expected newspapers to avoid his quote because it had no link to a source -- and even might trigger alarms as "too good to be true." But many blogs and several newspapers used the quotes at the start or finish of their obituaries.
He said the Guardian was the only publication to respond to him in detail and with remorse at its own editorial failing. Others, he said, treated him as a vandal who was solely to blame for their cut-and-paste content.
"The moral of this story is not that journalists should avoid Wikipedia, but that they shouldn't use information they find there if it can't be traced back to a reliable primary source," said the readers' editor at the Guardian, Siobhain Butterworth, in the May 4 column that revealed Fitzgerald as the quote author.
"It's worrying that the misinformation only came to light because the perpetrator of the deception emailed publishers to let them know what he'd done, and it's regrettable that he took nearly a month to do so," she wrote.
Fitzgerald said he had waited in part to test whether news organizations or the public would smoke out the quote's lack of provenance. He said he was troubled that none did.
And he warned that a truly malicious hoaxer could have evaded Wikipedia's own informal policing by getting a newspaper to pick up a false piece of information -- as happened when his quote made its first of three appearances -- and then use those newspaper reports as a credible footnote for the bogus quote.
"I didn't want to be devious," he said. "I just wanted to show how the 24-hour, minute-by-minute media were now taking material straight from Wikipedia because of the deadline pressure they're under."
