Former Prisoners of War Rally Behind McCain -
By David Nitkin, Baltimore Sun
September 3, 2008
Article Excerpts:
ST. PAUL, Minn. -- John McCain's years in a Vietnamese prison camp forged connections with soldiers that are paying dividends as he enters the final stage of his campaign for president.
Fellow prisoners, including some who now live in Maryland, have become outspoken advocates of the Arizona senator, sharing McCain's life story at a convention designed in part to impress undecided voters who may not be well-versed in the candidate's background.
"We drew our strength from each other," Everett Alvarez Jr., a resident of Potomac who was held in captivity longer than all but one serviceman, said yesterday. "Those are the same principles that John McCain practices now. He always maintains service to country over self."
Alvarez, 70, a deputy secretary in the Veterans Administration during the Reagan administration, has been attending Republican conventions for years. But this is the first time he has been a delegate, part of the Maryland contingent that is casting votes for McCain this week.
The McCain campaign rests on an image of the senator as a maverick willing to buck his party, and a leader who has the experience to fulfill the duties of the office. Those images, in large part, have their roots in his war record.
A Naval Academy graduate and son of an admiral, McCain was a fighter pilot whose plane was shot down over Hanoi in 1967. He was held for 5 1/2 years, including two in solitary confinement.
The experience has shaped his outlook, according to McCain and those who know him.
"I gained the insight, common to many people in life-threatening circumstances, that the trivial pleasures of life and human vanity were transient and insignificant," McCain wrote in Faith of My Fathers, his 1999 memoir. "And I resolved that when I regained my freedom, I would seize opportunities to spend what remained of my life in more important pursuits."
McCain's character, said Alvarez, is reflected in the fact that he rejected early release because there were other prisoners held longer.
"Character counts," he said. Like McCain, Alvarez said he rejected the chance to go home early, because "my conscience would not let me live with myself."
Sen. John Kyl of Arizona said McCain "understands that standing up for what's right and standing up with your friends, at the end of the day, is the most important thing you can do."
McCain also learned as a POW that "life is short," Kyl said after speaking to Maryland convention delegates yesterday. "He wants to make a difference. And I think that is why you see him so anxious to reform Washington."
Another POW in the Maryland delegation is Michael Cronin, a Navy officer shot down in 1967. During the 2004 election, Cronin joined efforts to discredit John Kerry's military service, creating a group called Vietnam EXPOWS.
McCain "embodies the qualities of honor, integrity, loyalty and courage that are part of our nation's military tradition," said Cronin, in a statement, when he endorsed the senator. He graduated from Annapolis five years after McCain and now lives in Gaithersburg. . . .

Hello Mick,
Just got back from the Anti-Terrorism school! Worked with a bunch of your Marines. (The Embassy guys) With all the tornados out there, I felt like I was back in Iraq, as I was diving into some sort of protective bunker every day!! I was gone for close to 3 weeks, so I am trying to get back into the swing of things at HQ. Every time I get my feet on the ground, I am off somewhere else. Going back to Germany in a few months, and I have a bunch of little trips coming up. 1 week in Arkansas in August. I have NEVER been to Arkansas, so that should be fun.
How are you doing? I played a few hands of cards on one of those riverboat casinos in St. Louis, but I don't think I was as luicky as you!

Hello Mick,
Forgive lapse in response, I was gone all weekend.
What kind of information are you looking for? THere is actually a Vietnam Vets group that I worked with before. The group I worked with was in NJ, but they are all over. I got their card somewhere, if that would help. Let me know what you are looking for, and I can get you any information you need.

RE:
He wasn't disabled at all from the war. He hadn't been feeling well for about 6 months but he never went to the doctor until last April.
He was diagnosed in May and died in June.
I don't think he was entitled to anything but I was just curious as to Agent Orange and I wanted to read up on it more.
When I did a search on Google there were over 2 million hits.

mick,
I hope you don't mind me posting here since I am not a vet but I am trying to find out some information and I thought maybe you or someone else here might be able to help.
My brother-in-law died last June of cancer at the age of 59.
He was a Vietnam vet and my sister-in-law had wondered whether or not the cancer had any connection to his time in Vietnam.
This past week she finally heard from the VA and they told her that his cancer probably was Vietnam War related and apparently a good many soldiers that were at the same place he was at also have died of cancer.
Do you know if there is any websites where I can find out more information on this?
Thanks in advance.

Hello Mick,
Yep, this is good stuff. I actually worked a bit with non-lethal munitions type stuff. (I'm an MP, and we are the ones that lead the way in this!) THis has been an idea out there for a while now. Another great idea they are trying to work on is a nasty stink bomb! The worse it smells, the better!

That picture on your Sig is just flippin funny. Yes, we are the keepers my friend :)
HOOAH Marine-1! (Or as you jarheads say, 'OORAH!')
I hope all you married military boys and girls out there are thinking about your spouses this week! Send a card, a love note, or a loving text message. Those little things count! I had plenty of young soldiers under my command that needed a little help in the romance area, so spread the word. SOLDIERS FIRST, in all things, not just out in the field. Any of you older and wiser NCOs, teach your young soldiers about life as well, from finances to handling girlfriends or boyfriends. I have been counseling one young man (20) who just had a baby! For a lot of the younger guys, the officers/NCOs are their role model, so take some time and pass on your wisdom!
That is all!
CohibaMan, your MP on patrol!
Just found this board. Good bless us all
hi larry, good morning. thank you

Christmas Canon Rock............
Christmas Canon Rock............
you surely are picture "gentleman private life and commanding officer." you do one great working for all our security.
true about being prepared.
but in war games you never know what to expect. especially in mideast fighting. private citizens by day terrorist by night.
you said it all "sacrifice, duty and honor."
Merry Christmas to you, your family and to all our armed service persons on duty, actice reserves, retired, to all moms and dads that have lost loved ones fighting for the aemerican way if life.
may God Bless all.
p.s. i did a message about how iran is using trickery about nuclear power for weapons of mass destruction. we know where these went from iraq. one country is IRAN, SYRIA and i would think to china and russia.
stopped nuclear buildup for weapons just as we preempted strike to iraq? isn't 2003 same as sos?
bush said enrichment uranium for strike to iran not nuclear parts. so enrichment isn't the theme now. our congress isn't very smart to believe this, i hope they don't.
CohibaMan is back from his super secret squirrel mission! I figured a tour in Iraq wasn't enough, so I have stayed on full time with the National Guard to help OTHER soldiers deploy. I just came back from a 2 week AT as a Company Commander Mentor, to help the poor souls get prepared for what they are up against. It is a bit difficult and frustrating trying to teach YOUNG 1LTs on the finer points of command. But overall, I love EVERY damn minute of it! There is nothing better than dealing with military personnel. Yeah, there are a bunch of schmucks out there, as in ANY profession, but most of the military people are great decision makers, leaders, and overall great people. AS always, I want to thank the people that came before me, like Mick, for all the great work they have done. Lemmy, as always, is my bud and e-mail drinking buddy! We are a different breed, a few screws loose, etc... But we are a special group of men and women that know the meaning of sacrifice, duty, honor, and I wish you ALL the best during the holiday season. Merry Christmas, Happy Hannukah, and God bless you!
CohibaMan

Now all of you DROP and give me 20!! (Unless you outrank me!)
i was just going to send pm. happy thanksgiving sir.

thank you, CohibaMan
Happy Turkey Day to all from Germany!
Hey there all you Jarheads, Old Salts, Doughboys, and Airmen,

Have a meaningful Veterans' Day
When I sit in the warmth of my home and as I type this message in freedom, I know that those who had served and who are now serving my country allow me these pleasures in life.
Although I'm not a veteran, my Father and four Uncles all served in the Big One. Because of them, I thoroughly know the importance of this day in our history. I take nothing for granted, as many gave their lives or free time to guarantee that what we have today was paid with a high price of life.
My sincere gratitude,
sumisu
hi cohibaman, nice to hear from ya. say you are going back?
wow, need the draft soon. then i can be general[sitting one]of the forces.
i see bagdad is getting better.
i hope all is well for you and your family.
yes holiday's are coming fast.
Hello Mick,
Forgive lapse in posting and responses, it looks like the Army just won't leave me alone. As Al Pacino said, you get out, AND THEY SUCK YOU BACK IN!! I've been out and about trying to get the unit back together after our tour. Containers are arriving, people need to be transferred, pay issues, etc... Wars come and go, but paperwork lasts forever!
You are correct on the cards. When we were out there, and December rolled around, there was NOTHING better than the great cards and letters we got from folks back home. THe best were the ones hand made by the small kids at schools! They always had great drawings, and some kind of patriotic saying. It is good to see they still do that at some schools!
Hope all is well with you and family. Thanksgiving is coming up, and so is Veterans Day!! I am getting chilly out here in NEw York, I actually saw FROST on my windshield the other day! FROST!! Man, I am starting to long for those 125+ degree days!!
hi peggy, good morning. this is from EZ
Click on the link below and send 'em a Thank You card - even if you've done this before.
Something cool that Xerox is doing:
If you go to this web site,
http://www.letssaythanks.com/
You can pick out a thank you card and Xerox will print it and it will be sent to a
soldier that is currently serving in Iraq.
You can't pick out who gets it, but it will go to some member of the armed services.
How AMAZING it would be if we could get everyone we know to send one!!!
This is a great site.
Please send a card.
It is FREE and it only takes a second.
Wouldn't it be wonderful if the soldiers received a bunch of these?
Whether you are for or against the war, our guys and gals over there need
to know we are behind them...

hi peggy, good morning. thanx for sharing these warming comments.
My sister said they are expecting a lot of snow this winter.
We've been there when not one flake fell and I was always so disappointed...but in 2003 it snowed almost every day while we were there.
A very beautiful white Christmas indeed. ;)
i got use to the desert area. chgo,il was very cold. the last winter thre we had one snow fall of over 3' plus.
four seasons are nice but i'm use to the desert now.
looks like you'll be traveling north in a few weeks.
