Yea, we had plenty of rain all spring and most of the summer. Actually I didn't have to water my lawn until about 3 weeks ago. This was a first. Have lived in Texas 30 years and it never happened before.
It gave us bumper fruit crops and a humongous pecan crop.
I'm just the opposite from you, Mick...I love cold weather. If I had my druthers I'd live anywhere that had 4 seasons!
these arn't too bad but blowing sand makes it hard on the pool cleaner.
about 45/50 m.p.h. gusts.
sure hate to see the cold come but that is four season stuff.
TX surely has had its full of rain this year.
Those were our temps up until last week when we had a "norther" come through bringing us much-needed rain and cooler temps.
The winds you're getting ...are they anything like the Santa Ana winds?
we are in the high 90's and lots of wind.
weather been nice and no rain in this neck of da woods.
YW, Mick....
Hey, what kind of weather are y'all having these days? It's finally cooled off here, leaves have turned... Fall is definitely in the air!

Mick...I saw a part of this story earlier today...it was most interesting and very emotional.
Honor Flights focus of Fox News segment
Fox News Sunday is planning to air a special segment on the Honor Flights that take World War II veterans from across the nation to visit the National World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C.
Earl Morse, who began the Honor Flights, teamed up with Jeff Miller, founder of HonorAir, to work with cities and states nationwide that are interested in the flights.
Reporter Chris Wallace with Fox Network interviewed Morse for Sunday's show as the "Power Player of the Week." "Sen. Dole personally contacted Chris Wallace and told him to do a story about our program and to contact Jeff Miller with HonorAir in Hendersonville," Morse said. "Jeff told Fox News that if he and I could not do the piece together, only to interview me. Despite repeated requests to go on together, Fox insisted on only one person. Jeff stepped back and I was the fortunate one."Miller did the same thing last year when ABC News named Morse "Person of the Week," Morse said.
The show airs at different times in different parts of the country. For times and more information, visit www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,61653,00.html.

Hundreds turn out for annual Veterans Picnic
Sunday, September 23, 2007
By Lucas K. Murray
HARRISON TWP. As the nation remains divided over the fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan and the best way to end the war, the collective voices of veterans have been some of the strongest supporters of men and women in harm's way.
Hundreds of veterans turned out to the annual Veterans Picnic at the 4-H Fairgrounds Saturday in Mullica Hill and while the backing of the troops was unwavering, their takes on America's latest conflict varied.
Leonard McCabe, who served in the Navy for 20 years shortly after World War II, said the difficulty in combat in Iraq lies in that Americans are fighting in a guerilla war.
"They don't know who the enemy is," McCabe, of Deptford, said standing next to his prized 1942 Ford jeep.
"What they should do is take everyone down and separate them later. Just go in and clean everybody's clocks. That's it."
He also had choice words for Washington power brokers.
"If they let the military do what they're supposed to do, it's okay," McCabe said, "but get those ... politicians out of there."
Bob Cassel, of Mantua Township, who served in the 94th Infantry under General Patton, offered up a more diplomatic approach of continued communication with tribal leaders in Iraq as a way to bring peace to the area.
"Understanding their ways," Cassel said. "I think that's the way to go, and it will ultimately lead to success."
Sgt. First Class Robert Hahn of Glassboro was days away from retirement after 29 years in the Army Reserve before he was given orders to ship out to the Middle East. Hahn is set to return there in the next few months.
"You don't hear about how many schools have opened or about how many people now have water and electric," Hahn said. "People over there are much better off than they were before."
Hahn, who said he gets his news from media outlets like Fox News and the Stars and Stripes newspaper, a Department of Defense subsidized publication, criticized a biased spin he sees being put on negative matters concerning the war.
"You never hear anything positive about what's going on over there," Hahn said. "Everybody thinks that the soldiers go over there and just get whacked."
and i do understand all your beautiful thoughts. family is very important to all of us.
if you have anything to add here "please do."
That's part of the problem, Mick...it's too close to Thanksgiving and when one has a large extended family like I do it causes resentment if we tell them we're going off to Vegas instead of visiting them.
Of course, I'd rather go to Vegas! LOL
hi peggy, yes i'll be there.
should be fun. it is around thanksgiving time though.
nice of you to share winning thoughts.
Hey Mick...yep, it was a $2.00 machine and I got it on the second hit. The only reason I played that particular machine was it had the highest jackpot among a section of progressive machines.
I played the pennies for the first time this trip because somebody told me how much fun it was. I put in $45.00 and got nada though so went back to the dollar machines.
Unfortunately I won't be attending the Expo...going to visit family in Spokane instead (I hope). Are you going? Perhaps I'll be able to make it next year as I would love to meet some of my good friends in person. ;)
Nothing right now. Busy week!
surf have you got anything to add for our vets? i did a few.
Something! LOL

Conducting a successful counterinsurgency campaign thus requires a flexible, adaptive force led by agile, well-informed, culturally astute leaders.
COUNTERINSURGENCY
Marine Corps Warfighting Publication 3-33.5
To the uniformed, the term “intellectual grunt” may seem to be an oxymoron. Mr. Webster defines an oxymoron as “something (as a concept) that is made up of contradictory or incongruous elements.”
Today’s counterinsurgency is full of “contradictory elements,” according to Captain Daniel H. Snyder, Company Commander of India Company, 3rd Battalion 6th Marines. His Commanding Officer, Lt. Col. James M. McGrath described Captain Snyder’s role as that of a “finisher” – someone who puts the final touches on the construction of a house. These final touches in the elements outlined in The Intellectual Grunt – Part One are critical to winning this war. In a recent visit to his combat outpost, he shared with me some key concepts which may seem oxymoronic on the surface.
Lead by following. In dealing with the local leaders and Iraqi Security Forces - rather than setting an American agenda – leadership is exercised by simply asking, “What do you want to do?” In a culture where every facet of life has been dictated by a centralized government for years, there is a tendency to lean on the Marines for all the answers.
“These are not the Flintstones,” says Captain Snyder negating any notion that the Iraqis are incapable of taking the lead. By putting the onus on the local leaders and ISF, the Iraqis “own the solution.” This simple exercise develops decision-making and problem-solving skills within the Iraqi leadership.
Marine infantry commanders have been indoctrinated with Patton’s phrase, “A good plan violently executed now is better than a perfect plan next week.” To watch the Iraqis sort through problems and make decisions on their own can be a maddening process for Marines programmed for action. However, the Marines know that to stand up self-sustaining local government leadership and security forces they must lead by following.
Be a sensitive warrior. Now that’s not exactly how Captain Snyder stated the concept. He said, “Don’t be an *******.” Make no mistake, the Marines are the baddest dudes on the block and are fully capable - as Shakespeare said -of letting “slip the dogs of War."
After the torture, killing, and propaganda of Al Qaeda, the Marines are a reflection of the alternative. In a culture where positive reinforcement is not the norm, a simple, sincere complement can make a friend. Listening to complaints (real or imagined), common courtesy and cultural awareness can mean the difference between a local who tells your unit where an IED is located or passively watches as your vehicle violently locates it.
As the Marines say, “No better friend. No worse enemy.” Being the “better friend” requires as much work (or more) as being the “worse enemy.”
Greater risks equal lesser risks. Taking down a house in the middle of the night with flash bang grenades may be standard operating procedure for nabbing suspect insurgents. It does not win the hearts and minds of parents listening to the wails of their terrified children.
Knocking on the door and asking permission to come in equals greater risks. Don’t get me wrong, the Marines are not ditty-bopping through towns and villages in t-shirts and flip-flops carrying the Rodney King mantra, “Can’t we just all get along?” However, they have purposely taken a less aggressive posture.
Combat outposts at greater distances, smaller patrols, more stringent Rules of Engagement and knocking on the door all provide greater risks. In one of the true “contradictory elements” of this war, these greater risks ultimately equal lesser risks.
In the coming dispatches, we will take a look at more of the challenges faced and how these “intellectual grunts” are working tirelessly toward the ultimate goal – handover.
Gene Blanton is a Marine veteran and the author of the soon to be released book, “Semper Fidelis Leadership: From The Corps To The Corporation.”

6th ESB inherits successes of outgoing unit
An Engineer Support Battalion’s contribution to building a better Iraq is often literally just that, building. As 6th ESB officially assumed the responsibilities formerly belonging to 8th ESB, 2nd Marine Logistics Group (Forward), they began a deployment in which they hope to build upon the outgoing unit’s successes.
“Welcome aboard,” Brig. Gen. James A. Kessler, 2nd MLG (Fwd) commanding general, said as he greeted the incoming unit at the Sept. 14 transfer of authority ceremony. “We’ve got a lot of... [Read More]

Just like the human body cannot function without a heart and a house could not be built without a foundation, Al Qaim air operations could not work without one group of Marines.
Those Marines are the ones in the Air Boss’ office maintaining air operations and ensuring that everyone in the Forward Arming and Refueling Point is coordinated.
“This is all one coordinated effort here,” said Maj. Robert Morgan, the Al Qaim Air Boss. “We basically de-conflict airspace, update the situational awareness and... [Read More]

nice to hear from ya. got that right. didn't even live there. should be a better ruling for running for a senate office.
dick army almost got her as a shue in. man i couldn't stand another moment to see them in the oval again. i met two truck drivers hauling huge chandlers from the white house they were sending to la. per clinton express.
so far unions don't support her.
we do need the draft back. iran? we could not do a preempted thing there.
only israel can do it for now. we just don't have the avilable manpower to cleanup the middle east stuff.
i would need two million soldiers to clean it up there "wall to wall". six months " IRAQ WOULD BE UNIFIED."
"starvation first", supply lines , powerlines, fuel supplies and then.
ah what the heck " hit their nuclear power facilities first."
hey was it on dollar play? pennies don't usually payoff that good.
thanx for sharing.
are ya going to the expo in nov.,2007?
doing better.
Hi Mick...just got back today from Louisiana with a stop in the Houston area and am completely wiped out. Guess I can't take the late hours anymore. LOL
I've been trying to catch up on market news but doesn't look like I'm going to be able to check everything out so will wait til morning and try again. For now I'm fixing to collapse on the couch and try to recover.
Hope you and family are doing well.
Talk to you tomorrow...gotta tell you about my $2400.00 slot win... :)))
Hello Mick,
Was on the road all day today, and listened to my man, Rush, on this whole sordid episode. How Hillary EVER became a Senator in my state I will just never know. I DO know that a lot of military people will NOT re-up should she be elected. And why should they, after her contempt for the General, which is in fact, a slap to all the military? I am just PRAYING that Rudy can get it done for the Republicans!
hi peggy, how is it going tonight?
hi CbM, this is from our friend EZ.

How Will Media Report Senate Vote Condemning MoveOn’s ‘Betray Us’ Ad?
By Noel Sheppard | September 20, 2007 - 14:27 ET
Byron York over at the National Review's Corner blog is reporting that the Senate has just voted 72 - 25 condemning MoveOn's "General Betray Us" advertisement published by the New York Times last Monday (h/t's to Charles Johnson and Glenn Reynolds).
This raises an interesting question: How will media report this vote?
After all, as York reported, every Republican Senator voted "Yea," while key Democrat leaders - including presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and Majority Leader Harry Reid - voted "Nay."
Here is the actual text of the amendment:
To express the sense of the Senate that General David H. Petraeus, Commanding General, Multi-National Force-Iraq, deserves the full support of the Senate and strongly condemn personal attacks on the honor and integrity of General Petraeus and all members of the United States Armed Forces.
Here are the nays:
Akaka (D-HI)
Bingaman (D-NM)
Boxer (D-CA)
Brown (D-OH)
Byrd (D-WV)
Clinton (D-NY)
Dodd (D-CT)
Durbin (D-IL)
Feingold (D-WI)
Harkin (D-IA)
Inouye (D-HI)
Kennedy (D-MA)
Kerry (D-MA)
Lautenberg (D-NJ)
Levin (D-MI)
Menendez (D-NJ)
Murray (D-WA)
Reed (D-RI)
Reid (D-NV)
Rockefeller (D-WV)
Sanders (I-VT)
Schumer (D-NY)
Stabenow (D-MI)
Whitehouse (D-RI)
Wyden (D-OR)
York also reported the Democrat "Yeas":
Baucus
Bayh
Cardin
Carper
Casey
Conrad
Dorgan
Feinstein
Johnson
Klobuchar
Kohl
Landrieu
Leahy
Lieberman
Lincoln
McCaskill
Mikulski
Nelson, Ben
Nelson, Bill
Salazar
Tester
Webb
As York pointed out, it is indeed interesting that some of the Democrat Senators who had tremendous support from the netroots in last November's elections voted for the condemnation, notably McCaskill, Tester, Klobuchar, and Webb.
Charles Johnson has already noted the disgust over at Daily Kos:
Meanwhile, the Senate just passed the resolution condemning http://www.MoveOn.org, and the Kos Kidz are boiling with rage: Daily Kos: Do the Democrats even know who votes for them anymore?
Undeterred by all this negative attention, MoveOn released a new ad referring to all Republicans as traitors.
It's going to be quite interesting to see how this vote, and this new ad, get covered by the mainstream media in the next 24 hours.
hi CbM, good morning. this is an awful case of vandalism.
this stands out some

US Park Police confirm: Vietnam Veterans War memorial was vandalized
By Michelle Malkin
September 17, 2007 02:38 PM We brought you our video report on the defaced Vietnam Veterans War memorial last week. Now, the Park Police confirm this afternoon:
The unidentified substance that was found splashed on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial earlier this month was the result of vandalism, the U.S. Park Police said today.
Sgt. Robert Lachance, a spokesman for the Park Police, said the investigation into the incident is continuing, but the detective on the case had ruled it an act of vandalism. Lachance said he could provide no more details because the probe is still underway.
The oily substance was first reported to police the evening of Sept. 7, National Park Service officials have said. Dark blotches were found along a stone curb at the base of the memorial for most of its length, and at least two of the wall’s panels appeared to have had something splashed on them.
Park Service officials said they did not know what the substance was, and at first said it was unclear if it was the result of vandalism or some kind of accident.
Park Service spokesman Bill Line said today that maintenance and preservation crews were still working to remove the stains and marks, but were proceeding with caution to avoid further damage. He said the crews were trying to avoid pushing any residue into cracks or grout in the stone.
“We’re purposefully going to take our time,” he said.
Line said it could take another week or more to clean, but officials remain confident they can remove all the stains.
RE: hi CbM, well said. i don't understand why and what but pacifist are always around. the so call nationalistic dems are partly the cause of this too.
right don't degrade these items of concern or you get the mob on ya.
remember i said clintons take care of the ones in the way of their agenda? well mr.shoe is dead now.[suicide note, hmmm] over 60 persons in their collections/persons helping them and then there are none to connect them for wrong doings.

Here is the funny thing about these so called 'protestors', they are all for peace and love, THEY are the ones that deface sacred property. THEY are the ones that spew vile rhetoric against current and former soldiers. THEY are the ones that use violence and destruction against recruiters. THEY are the ones that march outside of military hospitals or military funerals and degrade the injured or deceased military member.
The sad thing is, there is no sense of outrage that this happened among the mainstream media. Can you imagine if a Martin Luther King statue was defaced? It would be 24/7 news coverage of the HATE FILLED RIGHT. But, since it is a bunch of left wing pansies, who cares? People that have never and WILL never serve, trashing the likes of those that have served, and paid the ultimate price. Yeah, these are real heroes, these ant-war clowns. THey are a bunch of pathetic cowards, and the universities and schools are pumping out more of these morons on a daily basis.

This weekend, the anti-war crowd did what Gathering of Eagles has dedicated itself to preventing:
They damaged one of our memorials.
Friday night, someone squirted an oil/petroleum-based substance on the Vietnam Wall. As a result, the wall absorbed the substance and obliterated some of the heroes’ names inscribed at the wall.
It’s no coincidence that it was done the weekend before thousands of Eagles arrive to lobby Congress and the anti-American anarchists from ANSWER.
This is why we exist. This is why we fight, why we will not submit to the anti-American, anti-military agenda of the moonbat defeatists.
We need you in D.C. this weekend.
