Well this is very interesting, Frankly I see intriguing positives that Intel is focusing the future on machine learning and AI and especially with the deployment of 5g. The question that was asked in the CC about the roughly $300 million charge apparently pertains to the the “Reorganization and Other Charges” of $346 million appearing in the current quarter's P&L statement. According to the CC the charge relates to the reorganization of the Data Center Segment into two separate business units and also ties to Intel Federal which is an Intel wholly owned subsidiary corporation that conducts business with Federal agencies. In other words it appears certain of the assets perhaps manufacturing assets of Intel Federal have become obsolete as a result of the reorganization and values are written off in this quarter. The future results? Promising? We shall see.

The market is not liking the additional spending in the second half of the year, but I am encouraged. They are taking charges for 7nm, which means they are running lots of material. I am a bit curious about the $300M "federal" charge. Anybody know what this is about, as they mentioned GPU startup here? Are they building out Aurora or something?
It seems solid investments in accelerating the future. I am curious what they will say on Monday.

Not much, big event on Monday. Millions of alderlakes will be available in the fourth quarter, not tens of millions but it's a start, alderlake needs to be competitive to start the turn around. Lots of mobileye hype, don't recall much about discrete graphics which in my opinion is low lying fruit for intel to go for, Intel does not need to be the best just in the ball park and available. Seems most of discrete was going into cryptomania which is probably in the process of bursting the bubble.

Yeah, and AMD is apparently eating their lunch. Hopefully their current/new CEO will be able to turn the ship around. A friend of mine from college was one of the first traders of Intel options back in the mid-1980s, and my father actually put some VC funds into Cygnet Technologies (which ended up not doing well as it was ahead of its time ...the market), founded by Federico Faggin, who was the developer of the Intel 8080 and other very early microprocessors. My father also put VP funds into Zilog when he worked at Exxon Enterprises, but the Exxon culture F*&&d it up as my father strongly recommended bringing in other silicon valley VC firms but they decided to do it "on their own" which was dumb as they didn't have the connections or skills in this area of business!

I am not holding my breath, but I am holding a large position of LWLG I acquired in the past 4-5 weeks.

Intel tested LWLG's polymer 10 years ago and apparently at that time the formula wasn't yet "stable" for show time. Now things are much different in terms of their advancing formulation. Gotta love organic chemistry and the benzene ring!

Intel is racing to grow and secure that business. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., the world’s largest contract chip maker, in April said it would invest $100 billion over the next three years to increase production capacity as demand surges. Samsung Electronics Co. plans to invest about $116 billion by 2030 to diversify and boost its semiconductor output, and it is considering an investment of up to $17 billion to build a new chip-making factory in the U.S.

TSMC had about 59% of the global third-party chip-making market last year, and Samsung is at 14%, Counterpoint Research says.

Even as Intel plays catch-up, Mr. Gelsinger is turning to TSMC and Samsung to help make parts of its own most cutting-edge chips that it can’t produce in-house.
Stacy Rasgon, an analyst at Sanford Bernstein & Co., is skeptical about whether buying GlobalFoundries would help with Intel’s turnaround. “It’s lots of dollars for a marginal player in the industry,” he said, calling such a deal “a distraction for Intel.”

Strengthening Intel’s chip-production arm is only part of Mr. Gelsinger’s plan. The other is to ensure the company continuously designs cutting-edge chips to wow customers. “We’ve got a lot of work to do,” Mr. Gelsinger said earlier this year.

But if you want to believe this because of your interest in a penny stock in that space, go for it.

Where are the new 7nm factories?
D1X is outputting functional 7nm product. We have seen demonstrations of such. Fab 42 is making some volume of 10nm and will switch to 7nm when it is ready. Ireland is under construction and expected to produce 7nm product in 2022, and Israel along with the 2 new AZ foundries are pretty much dirt right now.

The low power version of TSM 5 exists. Genoa is on the HP (High performance) version, which is just now entering production. I don't think there are any products available yet that use this node.

I have never heard that... When we look at things like SRAM cell size, and transistor density we see something like:
TSMC 7nm is about the same as INTC 10nm
TSMC 5nm is a expected to be a little worse than INTC 7nm. TSMC 5 is around 175M transistors/mm, while INTC 7nm ups this to around 200.

The expectation is TSMC 3nm is about the same as INTC 5nm, but we have no data on either process.

Raises the question, why they (Intel) don't fix 10nm first??
A pretty good question, but it is important to note that INTC 10nm is the last intel DUV process and is very complex with very long throughput times. INTC 7nm is their first EUV process, and is greatly simplified from their 10nm process and will have a substantially faster throughput time. The downside is more complex and more expensive capital for 7nm.
Many of the layers on the INTC 10nm process (and the TSMC 7nm) require four passes through lithography. With the newer EUV steppers this is reduced to a single pass.

We should hear more at the INTC press conference on July 26. Interesting that they scheduled this for just a few days after the Q2 earnings call.

TSMC already makes the mobileye chips and the NN chips. Rumor has it the latest desktop gaming GPU is coming out of TSMC as well. The number I have heard is TSMC is currently about 25% of INTC product, and they expect that to end up closer to 33% as Intel expands their product portfolio. I don't expect Intel to fabricate X86 at TSMC.

That makes sense since Intel's process is skewed toward HP CPU. Not sure about the percentages.

It is likely Intel will be shipping product from the new 7nm factories in a similar time frame to AMD shipping Genoa (their INTC 7nm comparable product). Any estimate of what and when TSMC is going to fab for Intel in a serious way? I have even heard speculation that Intel will be fabbing for AMD while TSMC makes chips for Intel.

It will take a couple of years for these Intel fabs to be up and running. So, probably a little early to load up the truck with INTC shares.

Intel is expanding fab capital in a pretty significant way right now, without funding from either Dell or the US government. Intel capex continues at a $15B/year pace, while TSMC has been around $17B/year, but projected to increase to almost $30B/year.

2 new AZ foundries: $20B
New Mexico Foveros factory: $3.5B
Ireland expansion: $22B (TSMC 5nm equivalent process)
Israel expansion: $10B (TSMC 5nm equivalent process)
D1X in Oregon: about $5B spent for leading edge process development

Intel generally needs 3 large factories to meet x86 demand, and with fab 42 in AZ ready to go, Ireland nearly ready, and Israel starting construction they should be in good shape for EUV capacity. Now that their 7nm (TSMC 5nm equivalent) process uses 10 EUV layers, 5nm (TSMC 3nm) should easily run in those factories.
