E-City Software Inc. (OTCBB:ECTY) today reported financial results for its fiscal third quarter ended December 31, 2001.
E-City is a developer of interactive maps for cities around the world. Its customers include governments, defense and aerospace companies, telecommunications companies and the travel and tourism industry.

Revenue increased as a result of the completion of an additional five interactive city guides under the Cityscape software development agreement, the completion of the city of Munich for E-City's German distributor and the licensing of the company's cartoDISPATCH product.
E-City's net earnings for the nine month period ending December 31, 2001 were $604,928 or $0.06 per share, as compared with $125,600 or $0.01 per share for the nine month period ending December 31, 2000, representing an increase of 382% for the period.

"Traditionally, the third quarter is a relatively slow period in our industry. In spite of this, we were able to deliver strong results," said Anis Jessa, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman at E-City. "We are looking forward to the US launch of our municipal product this month at the ESRI International Business Partner Conference in Palm Springs. We already have completed municipal sales in this quarter during the pre-launch period and I am confident that our fiscal year end earnings will meet our projections."

Emergency Management Systems... another use for GIS software.
There's an interesting article in ArcUser this month (by ESRI, an ECTY partner) regarding the use of GIS software during the aftermath of 911. Excerpt:
"The center supplied maps that showed destroyed, damaged, and unstable buildings; helped route debris removal, described the path of asbestos plumes; illustrated power outages; showed the location of emergency centers;..."
ECTY software was not use in this particular instance... but thought this was a good example of the kinds of things GIS software can be used for.

Most electrical, instrumentation and controls design and/or contruction drawings are 2D. However, at GE Fanuc in Charlottesville, we drew up all the components and enclosures in 3D ourselves (..unless we could download them in that format..), in AutoCAD.
This allowed for locating operator interface panels (OIPs), man-machine interface displays (MMIs), push button stations and the larger power/PLC/controls enclosures into the 3D mechanical machine drawings for the huge, plastic-injection molding machines that were being manufactured by Husky of Canada.
This principle also holds true for large facility designs. It's much easier to visualize, plan and coordinate power distribution, lighting, controls, data and communications systems locations and routings with the structures, equipment, plumbing and HVAC (air conditioning) systems, etc., when you can see the entire structure and/or complex in 3D.
The ultimate extension of 3D mapping is for high-speed military aircraft and helicopter training simulations, as seen in the "...wham-bang-zoom-crash-zowie..." Action Films shown these days.
Thinking and/or visualizing in 3D is quite difficult for people with a planar intellect. So, 3D maps will be extremely helpful in those cases. Kind of like Peter Max geographic how-to's for the dimensionally challenged.

"..Have you hugged your Grandkiddies today.."??
.
First thing that came to my mind was it was an online equivalent to those 3D tourist maps you can buy. Lots of people, like myself, like graphics, visuals when looking at problems. Here's another use... you are a franchise and looking for good property for your latest store. You present the location in 3D to your potential new store franchisee (sp) and it gives a much fuller picture of the property and the surrounding area. Or... your moving to another state... you want to check out neighborhoods... you check it out in 3D.
We used GIS software to map analytical information that our software producted (raw data) by region, even down to zip code. ESRI is one of the 50 largest software companies in the US... there must be somebody interesting in buying this kind of software.
Sara
I really have no idea what their software could be used for or why they are making it.

p.s. up 47% today... wish I had seen this yesterday!

Interesting company... their software reminds me of Simm City... lol. I was browsing through their website and found under business partners, ESRI. I have known ESRI for many years and they are big in GIS software and have been around for many years. Not only have I used ESRI products, but at one point even knew people who worked in their Redlands facility. I'm guessing ECTY uses ESRI software as a base for their mapping... at least that's what my company did with their GIS product.
