Northland Upgrades AMD Stock to Outperform as Macro Headwinds are Now Priced In
By: Investing.com | June 30, 2022
Northland Capital Markets analyst Gus Richard upgraded shares of AMD (AMD) to Outperform from Market Perform with a price target cut to $95.00 per share.
The analyst believes macro headwinds are now priced in, both in his estimates and the share price, which is down 53% from the peak in November.
Not just for AMD, Richard argues that the estimates for semiconductor companies are too high in general.
“We scrubbed our AMD numbers and lower our CY23 estimates to comprehend a global economic slowdown that will likely impact PC CPUs, GPUs, game consoles, and XLNX. AMD in servers CPUs is at the top of the stack next year we believe AMD will see little impact on this business in CY23. We estimate that AMD's PC CPU revenue will decline 6% next year, and GPU revenue will decline 7%,” Richard told clients in a note.
Given today’s cut to estimates, Richard argues these are now a “low bar for the company.”
AMD shares are still down 1.5% today.

Identifying A High-Probability Fibonacci Price Cluster In AMD
By: Carolyn Boroden | June 18, 2022
• Following the Fibonacci price and timing analysis:
This is an example of a Fibonacci price cluster in AMD. We had the combination of a 618 retracement of a prior swing, a 100% projection of a prior rally, along with a 1.618 extension of a prior high to low swing. This gave us a price cluster at the 109.40-84 area.
The zone was tested and held, followed by sell triggers. So far the decline has been $30.14. My targets are a little lower from here...but since we don't always meet the key targets, it's a good time to ratchet down stops on shorts.
This is one of the examples I'll be going over in my webinar on 6/23 at 3PM Pacific.

Buying AMD and Nvidia in a Bear Market: What to Know Now
By: TheStreet | June 17, 2022
• AMD and Nvidia have been swallowed up in the bear market, with each stock declining at least 50%. Here's how to trade them now.
I am a firm believer in buying quality businesses when they go on sale. While emotions run high during bear markets and stock market corrections, that’s often the best time for long-term investors to start shopping.
If you’re an experienced trader or market speculator, then it may be best to trade with the trend. At this moment, that trend is lower. If traders don’t like shorting, they may very well wait for better trading conditions by waiting for a new uptrend to form.
Since trying to time the market is not a good idea, investors might consider a dollar-cost-average approach or another way to buy good companies at good prices.
I consider two such companies to be Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and Nvidia (NVDA).
The two have both reported solid earnings results and both companies are forecast to continue driving earnings and revenue higher. That goes for this year as well as the out-years.
Economic contraction or not, these companies just aren’t feeling the pinch — at least not yet. Yet the two stocks have been cut in half from the all-time highs made in the fourth quarter.
These are moments to begin accumulating. For more precise technical analysis, let’s look at the charts.
Trading AMD Stock
Weekly chart of AMD stock.
Chart courtesy of TrendSpider.com
AMD stock has held up marginally better than Nvidia has, which I don’t think many investors expected. In any regard, it recently broke the key $84 to $86 zone.
This area has been significant over the past two years and it’s also the 61.8% retracement from the all-time high to the covid-19 low in March 2020. Lastly, it’s around where AMD found support earlier this year.
Now breaking below this level, the stock is vulnerable.
If the stock flushes lower, the $73.85 to $75 zone is the first downside target. The second target is $64 to $66, where AMD stock finds the 78.6% retracement, 200-week moving average and the monthly VWAP measure.
However, the key to watch now is $84. If AMD stock can bounce before a significant pullback and reclaim this level, then we could be looking at an upside reversal.
In that scenario, a move back above $85.50 puts $92 back in play, then the 10-week moving average and the $100 to $104.55 level — the latter of which is last month’s high.

Despite Growing Macro Risks, AMD Stock Remains A Wall Street Analyst Favorite
By: Investing.com | June 13, 2022
• AMD and other chipmakers face the possibility of demand destruction if the economy slips into a recession
• The stock has lost about a third of its value this year
• Chief Executive Officer Lisa Su has presented quite a robust growth scenario during the company’s Investor Day last week
Investors are rapidly rebalancing their portfolios as the risk of the US economy slipping into a recession grows. In general, they're moving away from high-growth equities, buying value stocks which have a better chance of weathering a prolonged downturn instead.
One such casualty is semiconductor manufacturer Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ:AMD).
AMD Weekly TTM
During the pandemic tech stock boom, AMD was one of the most loved chip stocks. But in 2022, shares have lost more than a third of their value after their 50% surge in 2021. The stock closed on Friday at $94.82.
However, the steep decline is making both investors and analysts wonder: has this pullback gone too far?
Given the current uncertain macro environment, it’s difficult to predict where AMD stock will be trading in the short run. Overall, the biggest threat to chipmakers comes from the increasing possibility of demand destruction if the economy slips into a recession later this year.
The chances of such an outcome increased last week after the latest US inflation reading shows that price pressures are now well-entrenched in the economy. Shares of chipmakers have been pummeled this year amid soaring interest rates and concerns about slowing economic growth that could threaten to leave semiconductor companies saddled with excess inventories.
The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index is down 28% this year compared with an 18% decline for the S&P 500.
Strong Sales Forecast
So far, AMD management doesn’t see this adverse macro environment slowing demand for its chips. The company, early last month, gave a strong sales forecast for the current quarter, indicating that the chipmaker continues to make strides in its most lucrative market: data-center processors.
AMD predicted second quarter sales of roughly $6.5 billion, compared with an average analyst estimate of $6.03 billion. But in the semiconductor industry, it doesn’t take much to reverse the cycle.
Competitor NVIDIA (NASDAQ:NVDA), which released its latest earnings three weeks later than AMD, gave a disappointing quarterly revenue forecast, blaming Chinese supply chain problems and the war in Ukraine. As the biggest US chipmaker by market cap and a key provider of semiconductors used in data centers, the Santa Clara, California-based NVIDIA is seen as a bellwether for the industry.
Despite concerns about demand—which could drastically slow in the event of a recession—many analysts remain bullish on AMD stock, given its long-term prospects. During the company’s Investor Day last week, AMD Chief Executive Officer Lisa Su put forward a robust growth scenario in which she expects a 20% compound annual growth rate for the company, helped by the AMD’s latest merger deal with the semiconductor company Xilinx.
Analysts Remain Bullish
AMD expects a gross margin of more than 57%, driven by a mix of new offerings. At the same time, operating expenses are anticipated to be around 23-24%. The chipmaker expects its operating margin to hover around the mid-30% range as the tech giant improves margins and profitability.
After the company's Investor Day last week, Goldman Sachs’ analyst Toshiya Hari reiterated her $133 a share buy target, implying 35% potential upside. Her note said:
“We come away from the event with higher conviction in AMD’s market share prospects as well as its ability to drive revenue synergies associated with the Xilinx and Pensando acquisitions.”
“AMD is not immune to macro volatility; however, we believe there are enough positive offsets for the company to sustain its fundamental outperformance.”
Raymond James’ analyst Chris Caso, in his note, said AMD is in a strong position to grab more market share from Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) in the days to come.
“Our overriding thesis on AMD however is that INTC’s 80%+ market share is simply unsustainable even if INTC does manage to catch up, since we see no possible scenario in which INTC has a meaningful performance advantage through 2025, and it’s quite possible that INTC misexecutes on their aggressive roadmap. With AMD stock now trading at ~16x that $6 2024 earnings power, we think that’s a highly attractive multiple for a company with prospects of 20% top line growth.”
Piper Sandler upgraded AMD's rating to overweight in a recent note, while boosting its price target to $140 from $98. Its note said:
“There are two old sayings in the investment world: 1) ‘You cannot time the market, so do not try’ and 2) ‘Buy good companies when they are down.”
Bottom Line
Except for macro risks, it seems everything else is going right for AMD. In our view, its current weakness opens a door for long-term investors to build their positions.
That said, the stock is unlikely to offer the kind of hefty returns that investors saw last year when the global economy was on a different trajectory.

5 Analysts Discuss AMD After Investor Day
By: Investing.com | June 10, 2022
Advanced Micro Devices Inc (NASDAQ:AMD) yesterday unveiled its “strong and compelling” long-term financial model during the Investor Day event.
The chipmaker expects revenue growth of roughly 20% compound annual growth rate (CAGR), including the latest merger deal with semiconductor company Xilinx.
The chipmaker expects a gross margin of more than 57%, driven by a mix of new offerings, while operating expenses are anticipated to be around 23-24%.
AMD expects an operating margin to hover around mid-30% as the chipmaker improves margins and profitability, with the FCF margin expected at over 25%, indicating the company’s strong cash flow generation capabilities.
Here is how Wall Street analysts saw yesterday’s Investor Day.
Susquehanna’s Christopher Rolland: “We view the new targets as generally expected, but new product updates constructive.”
BofA’s Vivek Arya: “Key takeaways: (1) larger $300bn TAM (vs. $135bn prior when Xilinx closed) suggests AMD is just about 7% represented despite illustrating product outperformance/roadmap consistency; (2) AMD confident on 20% topline pf-growth, supported by $10bn in revenue synergies with Xilinx and share gains in core markets; (3) AMD more focused on creating optimized (ie Bergamo for cloud) and customized (with customer “special sauce” aka IP blocks) as workloads diversify; (4) next gen 5nm Genoa server CPU on track for Q4 ramp (now almost simultaneous with Intel next gen I7 nm Sapphire Rapids given delays); and (5) in the near-term, AMD reiterated 2022 outlook (of 60%+ growth), encouraging after Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) warned at our Global Tech Conference earlier this week.”
JPMorgan’s Harlan Sur: “It was clear to us that the team’s solid execution of its technology/product roadmaps over the past several years has set the company up to maintain a 2-step lead over its competitors, in our view, and AMD is currently seeing solid share gains, strong revenue growth, and a higher profitability profile as a result.”
Goldman Sachs’ Toshiya Hari: “We come away from the event with higher conviction in AMD’s market share prospects as well as its ability to drive revenue synergies associated with the Xilinx and Pensando acquisitions... We reiterate our Buy rating on the stock based on a 12-month price target of $133 (35% potential upside). AMD is not immune to macro volatility; however, we believe there are enough positive offsets for the company to sustain its fundamental outperformance.”
Raymond James’ Chris Caso: “Our overriding thesis on AMD however is that INTC’s 80%+ market share is simply unsustainable even if INTC does manage to catch up, since we see no possible scenario in which INTC has a meaningful performance advantage through 2025, and it’s quite possible that INTC misexecutes on their aggressive roadmap. With AMD stock now trading at ~16x that $6 2024 earnings power, we think that’s a highly attractive multiple for a company with prospects of 20% top line growth.”

Nvidia and AMD Graphics Cards Shipments Rise 32% in 2022 - Reports
By: Investing.com | June 7, 2022
According to a report by tech website Tom's Hardware, there has been a significant rise in value and product volume in the discrete graphics card market over the past year, favoring consumers.
The article says that discrete graphics card shipments from AIB partners surged, with John Peddie Research reporting a 32.2% year-over-year increase in overall shipments from Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) and Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ:AMD).
While shipments rose, AIB market value fell from $12.4 billion down to just $8.6 billion due to lower GPU prices.
In addition, the market share between AMD and Nvidia is also said to have changed during the past year.
"In Q1 of 2021 AMD had a 20% market share in the discrete GPU market, with Nvidia at 80%. In Q1 of 2022, market share shifted towards AMD a little bit, with AMD now at 24% market share and Nvidia at 75%," wrote Tom's Hardware journalist Aaron Klotz.
While the change isn't significant, it is a win for AMD as the company has struggled to gain a share of the GPU market front for years.

Semiconductor AMD Stock in Options Bulls' Good Graces
By: Schaeffer's Investment Research | June 6, 2022
• Now may be the perfect opportunity to bet on a move higher for AMD
• Calls have been unusually popular in the options pits
Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMD) stock is down 0.6% to trade at $105.64 this afternoon. The semiconductor concern recently staged a bounce off its May 12, roughly one-year low of $83.27, and last week settled above its 80-day moving average for the first time since January. AMD is today pacing for its third-straight close above this trendline, and earlier surged to its highest trading level in about two months, though it remains down roughly 27% in 2022.
Despite the volatility it's faced over the last few months, Advanced Micro Devices stock is on Schaeffer's Senior Quantitative Analyst Rocky White's list of names that have attracted the highest weekly options volume within the past two weeks. According to this data, 3,970,827 calls and 2,695,648 puts were exchanged in this two-week time period. The 5/27 100-strike call stood out as the most popular contract by far, followed by the 102-strike call in the same weekly series.
This penchant for calls is nothing new. This is per the security's 50-day call/put volume ratio of 1.82 over at the International Securities Exchange (ISE), Cboe Options Exchange (CBOE), and NASDAQ OMX PHLX (PHLX) that ranks in the 97th percentile of its annual range, which implies a healthier-than usual appetite for long calls in the last 10 weeks.
These options traders are in luck, too, as now seems like an ideal time to weigh in on AMD's next move higher. Advanced Micro Devices stock has usually outperformed volatility expectations, per its Schaeffer's Volatility Scorecard (SVS) ranking of 95 out of 100.

Nvidia, ON Semi, AMD Among Bank of America's Top Chip Stocks
By: TheStreet | June 3, 2022
• Chip stocks have 23% free-cash-flow margins, making them more than twice as profitable as S&P 500 stocks, Bank of America analysts say.
It’s been a rough 2022 for semiconductor stocks amid fears of a sharp economic slowdown that would depress chip demand.
The PHLX Semiconductor Sector index has dropped 22% year to date.
But Bank of America analysts see some reasons for optimism.
“Macro factors can enhance stock volatility,” they said in a commentary. But “the recent 36% peak-to-trough [price-to-earnings-multiple] contraction in the semiconductor index (versus a 27% downturn historically) already reflects a medium-sized recession,” the analysts said.
“Meanwhile, chip stocks are generating 23% free-cash-flow margins,” which makes them more than twice as profitable as S&P 500 stocks.
“While semi demand is cyclical, with the exception of 2012, semi sales have always had positive year-on-year growth as long as global GDP growth stayed above 3%,” the analysts said.
That’s now the case, with growth estimated at 3.3% for 2022 and 3% for 2023, the analysts said.
Further, “in prior times, only a single end market, say, personal computers or smartphones, would drive semis,” the analysts said.
“Now there are multiple end markets served by a consolidated set of chip vendors, delivering proprietary products and generating solid free-cash-flow margins.”
Bank of America's top pick for large-cap chip stocks is Nvidia (NVDA). Its top small-to-mid-cap pick is ON Semiconductor (ON).
The analysts’ top picks according to theme are:
Cloud: Nvidia, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and Marvell Technology (MRVL).
Automobiles: ON, Analog Devices (ADI) and NXP Semiconductors (NXPI).
Capital Expenditures: KLA (KLAC), GlobalFoundries (GFS), Applied Materials (AMAT), Lam Research (LRCX) and Teradyne (TER).
Morningstar's Take on Nvidia...
Morningstar analyst Abhinav Davuluri assigns the company a wide moat and puts fair value for the stock at $200, 5% above a recent quote of $190.
“Management [has] noted second-quarter revenue will be negatively affected by $500 million to account for covid-19 lockdowns in China and the stopping of sales to Russia,” he wrote in a commentary.
Despite that obstacle, “we view Nvidia as our top fabless semiconductor pick, as we think the firm’s data-center business will prove resilient to macroeconomic headwinds.”
Overall, “Nvidia is the top designer of discrete graphics processing units that enhance the visual experience on computing platforms,” Davuluri said.
...and on ON Semi
Morningstar analyst William Kerwin gives the company a narrow moat and puts fair value for the stock at $67, 6% above a recent quote of $63.
“On Semi’s strong first-quarter results reaffirmed our confidence in management’s long-term vision for realigning the company toward stronger growth and profitability,” he said in a commentary.
“We think the firm’s focus on differentiated solutions for electric vehicles, autonomous vehicles, and renewable energy infrastructure is being rewarded on the top and bottom lines.”
Further, “we think investment in silicon carbide, while already reaping results, will pave [the way for] long-term growth.”

AMD has 'Underappreciated Tailwinds' - BofA
By: Investing.com | June 3, 2022
Ahead of the company's analyst day, BofA Securities' analyst Vivek Arya maintained a Buy rating and $160 price target on Advanced Micro Devices Inc (NASDAQ:AMD) Friday, telling investors in a note that consensus views could be underappreciating tailwinds in GMs.
"While AMD’s best-in-class organic growth and share gains are well-noted, consensus could be underappreciating tailwinds in GMs (54% currently vs. our l-t 56-57% forecast and bull-case 60%+) as AMD closes the gap with fabless compute peers that are generating 60-65% GM," said Arya.
The analyst added that the company could transform to a consistent FCF-generation and return franchise from its current "narrow-perception of just an Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) share displacer."
"While AMD might keep focus on buybacks n-t, they could consider a modest (sub-1% yield) dividend in the future, attracting new investors," he added.
Arya said they find AMD compelling and outlined the company's potential path to a bull-case $9-$10 earnings per share in FY25.
AMD stock has slipped over 2% in early Friday trading.
